Never been to Narrabeen? Well perhaps you should! Photo: Michael Kellerman
'Good things come to those who wait.' What kind of surfer are you? The one who's constantly paddling all over the line up trying to get the best waves or the one who choses a spot, sits and waits for the bomb to come through? We all know which we'd rather be but how many of us actually have the patience to wait? Apparently nowadays people are more likely to hang on for big rewards than go for instant but small gratification. That said, it's all dependant on how long that wait will be! So in this issue, we meet the next generation of surfers who are biding their time but as you will see for yourselves, when the big one comes, they will grab the moment with both hands and will ride that bomb all the way through to the big time itself! It's time to go big or go home! But we're in no rush to get there – when the big time comes, we'll be ready for it!

SM Check out Cooper Chapman chucking out that tail! Photo: Michael Kellerman
Cooper Chapman is following in the sizeable foosteps of many legends who have come before him – Nat Young and Simon Anderson being just a couple of names who have also called North Narrabeen their local. Not only is there that next generational expectation of moving to the top but there's heeps of peer pressure too! One month younger than Kolohe and just one month older than previous World Champion Matt Banting, Cooper's getting it from all sides. Many would buckle under such big responsibilites to succeed being placed on his shoulders, but not Cooper. He, like any other aspiring Pro surfer knows what he wants – to qualify for the tour – but he's going for it when he's ready for it. And by the looks of it, this could well be the year! Let's check out Chapman!

So can Cooper qualify for the Tour and become World Champion? Well he's already been Under 16 Australian Champion and beaten Kelly Slater, Josh Kerr and Mick Fanning in the Boost Mobile Air show held at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach a couple of years ago. So yes looks like he certainly could!

You see the Stone on the nose of a board and you know for sure that surfer's going to be big one day! Jordan Lawler is on that journey with main sponsor, Volcom backing him all the way. He's just won the Australian VQS Championships and so is currently out in Fiji ready to take on the best of the world's Under 20 surfers at the VQS World Championships. No doubt while he's there, he'll be rubbing shoulders in the line up with the Top 34 all ready for the Volcom Fiji Pro in June 2013. So earlier this year, soon after he'd become the Under 18 Champion for New South Wales, we caught up with Jordy to fnd out what drives this now 18 year old Champ!

Now the past few years have seen you performing consistently well at all levels, though becoming Under 18 Champion for your region last year must have been a highlight. Talk us through that contest and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your title. Well I travelled from Sydney to Cofs Harbour (where it was held) and on the way up we were just like surfng everywhere and really just cruising. I felt I had no pressure really it was super relaxing knowing that dad was with me. Through the event, I was eating good foods and working on pre heat warm ups that I have been fguring out with Matt Bemrose and Barton Lynch. You had to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders? How do you rate your surfng peers over in Australia at the moment? Every year I see kids ripping and I think it’s the love of the sport in Australia that really pushes every young kid to surf well and with Australia’s wonderful beaches there is no doubt on my mind that there will be more younger Australian World Champions.

Jordy sure does work the wave! Photo: Stu Gaston
CHAMP CHATS You've been surfng against these guys most of your competitive life. There must be diferent levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this afect the way you surf in a heat? Well I try not to think of that too much! I just think about what I have to do and realize that who ever gets the best waves is more likely to win so I make sure that I’m in the right spot instead of thinking about what my competitors are doing. So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? Who ever is in the top 5 I guess...
SM - 22

SM Jordan grabs plenty of air time too! Photo: Michael Kellerman
And now you're regional champion, does that go down as your best victory to date? No its not – I have had some all right results like round of 16 in some Pro Juniors. Of course, you’ve been close to becoming National Champion a few times now. Do you still have that title in your sights? Well last year was my last year but I was really annoyed that I didn’t win it but I got second and my manager Barton Lynch got second as well and he won a World Title in 1988 so that makes me feel a lot better. I really want to follow in his footsteps - he's a great role model for Australian surfng.

And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? Yeah I train with a mate called Christian Cook who has a gym called “Fit for Sport located in Brookvale just down the road from my place and he is also a surfer and he really relates surfng in what we do. Now you're from the Northern Beaches of Sydney with some of the best waves that Australia has to ofer on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling? Where ever it is barreling really! But nothing beats Narrabeen!

So now what are your goals for the rest of this year? Now that I'm in the Pro Juniors, I really want to go well in them and also get as much media coverage as I can. Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? Well I want to be on the CT of course and hopefully round up some World Titles. I mean I have defnetly worked hard to achieve this goal!

SM Jordan Lawler loves the ramps at his local, Narrabeen! Photo: Michael Kellerman
Hot Spots North Narrabeen is renowned as one of the great surf breaks of the world. Belonging to Sydney's infamous Northern Beaches, North Narrabeen is the most consistent of all sixteen beaches lying along this 20 kilometre stretch thanks to a channel created by the North Narrabeen Lagoon entrance. In all there are five distinctive surfing breaks and we asked local photographer, Michael Kellerman to provide us with a pictorial guide to this enviable surf set up which by the time you've seen, you'll be wanting to visit Narrabeen!

Further south, Narrabeen has a break known as 'The Bombie' which on big south swells will offer up just that – huge barreling waves! But on smaller swells there can be some fun lefts to be had!

Hot Shots What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I love both free surfng there is no pressure and a good time to escape and practice moves but in a comp it really pushes you and lets you show of a bit. What song motivates you before a surf? I love pretty much all music but the Ramones have been getting me keen for a surf for some reason recently When and where was your best surf session? Talk us through it. I have had so many amazing sessions but a standout was me and my mate at a beach in Byron just getting barrel after barrel it was amazing. What's the worst wipeout of your life? I've had a few gnarly ones but the worst was probably a session at North Steyne on a big day I pulled into a close out which held me down for a while only to come up and see a huge bomb land on my head that drilled me and then I went in haha
