Surphang Magazine
'What goes up, must come down!' It has been said that onshore is the new offshore! Hardly surprising when you consider what a rubbish season of surf we've had recently – some people can't even remember what offshore conditions look like! So it's no wonder that surfers are making the most of what onshore surf can offer with airs being the most obvious option. Surfing is constantly progressing with the next generation always looking to new ways to push the limits and certainly the aerial repertoire of many of the worlds top surfers is allowing them to do just that – take Julian Wilson and the 720! So we've decided it's time to pay homage to aerial surfing before anybody else decides that it's not just the air reverse that has had its day! So welcome to our special SURPHANG 'AIR'TEEN ISSUE!

SM Sam Lendrum slobbing around.
Sam Lendrum has grown up surfng alongside all the big up and coming names in Australia – Jack Freestone, Ryan Callinan, Thomas Woods to name but a few. He's similarly at that point of his surfng career where the fork between the contest and free surfng roads has started to appear. While his name has flled many fnal contest sheets in the past few years, he is more recently known for his vids hitting the internet, displaying some impressive progressive surfng. So whilst in Coolangatta, Sam's current abode, we caught up with the level headed surfer who's got big plans ahead!
SM - 06
Name:
Sam Lendrum
Age: 22 Nickname: Lenny Where you live: From Catherine Hill Bay in Newcastle NSW but relocated to Coolangatta 2 years ago. Sponsors: Fox, Globe, Skullcandy, Smith Optics, Future Fins, Ocean & Earth. Local break/s: Only been here for 2 years so my mates like Noa Deane give me shit about not being a local yet so no local break for me haha. Favourite surfers? Dane, John John, Tom Curren. Favourite place to surf? Telo islands Favourite surf movie? 156 tricks, Morning of the Earth Favourite surf trick? Forehand wrap Favourite board? At the moment I'm riding a few different boards but my favourite is a 5'10 by Al Johns

SM Sam hones his 'lightfooted' aerial technique.

What got you into surfng? My dad always surfed and I grew up right near the beach so I spent a lot of time hanging out with the family there riding bodyboards and then I started trying to stand up so dad got me on a board. When and how did you become sponsored? Not too sure really it all just sort of happened. One minute I was just cruising around doing local comps just having fun and then I tried to fnd some help for mum and dad's wallet haha and it just went from there.

SM - 10
What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? My proudest moment or moments would probably be being able to go out and surf with my old man and all the mates I've made along my way with surfng. Who in surfng inspires you most? My inspiration would have to be surfng with mates. Just watching them go big or do something crazy and then automatically I want to better that and then we sort of just feed off each other that way. What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I like both aspects of surfng. I spent all of my teenage years travelling around Australia and overseas competing and really enjoyed it but now I'm doing more free surf stuff with flming and photos. Neither takes the cake in my book.

SM
Sam samples another fun looking ramp.
The Pro Show
What's your favourite air of all? My favourite air would have to be just a big backside full rote, simply because I can't haha.
And what do you think about the progression in airs in surfng? Has the air reverse had its day? Are there new airs still waiting to be blown out the surf? The progression of airs has been incredible. Especially in the last 5 years. When guys like Martin Potter were starting to try them, they kind of got written off about it and then guys like Christian Fletcher started rotating above the lip and it took off from there. Now there's all these different grabs and rotations taken from skating and snowboarding being put in airs and I think it's pretty incredible to see it where it will be in another 5 years. As for the air reverse it is considered the bread and butter of aerial surfng much like the cutback is in tradition surfng. A big full rotation no grab to the fats is still pretty damn good to watch though haha.
SM - 12
The Pro Show When and where was your best surf session? Best surf session would have to be on a boat trip I did to the Telos for a photo shoot with a bunch of mates and after about 4 days of not much we pulled up to this right just on sunrise one morning to fnd it had picked up to about 6-8 ft just perfect barrels so we surfed for 11 hours straight without a break till dark. Slept well that night haha What's the worst wipeout of your life? A couple of years ago in Tahiti I fell on a solid one and dislocated my ankle which didn't get put back in properly until I came home a week later.
13 -
SM Sam slobbing it up!
SM - 14
What song motivates you before a surf? I like to listen to a mix of different music, it really just depends on what I'm into on the day. What do you do when you don't surf? When I don't surf I usually skate or play trivia haha, hang with mates just cruise around really. Do you train as well as surf? I used to do a bit of training but not so much anymore. Just surf and skate And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? If I didn't surf I reckon I would play lawn bowls or golf
15 -
SM Being light on his feet helps Sam go tail high a treat!
The Pro Show
If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? If I had unlimited money I wouldn't have a worry in the world haha. bye a brewery haha. Nah probably just take care of my family and do whatever I felt like doing at any time. What's the healthiest thing you ate today? Haven't eaten yet but I'm feigning for a bacon and egg roll haha What's your most overused word? Too many to choose from. I like to repeat myself haha.
SM - 16
The Pro Show What's your goal for the next year? Next yeah I want to go to university to study urban and environmental planning and just put as much into my surfng as possible. And what about the future? The futures a hard one to think about I reckon. I really have no clue but hopefully I'm accomplished and can look back with no regrets.

SM Trevor Thornton finds flying fun.
What got you into surfng? I grew up on the beach so surfng was something that just kinda happened! When and how did you become sponsored? I was sponsored in 6th Grade by Mada and I don't really remember how it happened haha Who in surfng inspires you most? Tom Curren What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? Free surfng is more expressive unlike doing the same thing over and over again
SM - 20
Now the past few years have seen you performing consistently well at all levels, though becoming NSSA Open and Air Show Champion for your region the year before last must have been a highlight. Talk us through the highs and lows that lead to you earning your titles. Well winning just kind of happens if you work hard, there's no real way of explaining how, other than practice and working hard. So can you remember what airs you bust to win the Air Show? Couldn't tell you if you gave me a week to think about it haha

SM Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Flying Thornton!
What's your favourite air of all though? I like slobs, they are pretty cool! And what do you think about the progression in airs in surfng? Has the air reverse had its day? Are there new airs still waiting to be blown out the surf? I think that surfng is heading back to the way it was in a sense, that big cool carves will be scoring better than the same air reverse every time.
SM - 24
25 -
SM Trevor takes his tail round off his backhand.
CHAMP CHATS
You have to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders to win nowadays? How do you rate your surfng peers over in America at the moment? I believe that the surfers in America are some of the best and although they don't do the same air every wave like some surfers seem to be doing nowadays, they have a ton of different manoeuvres that are much more fun to watch! You've been surfng against these guys most of your competitive life. There must be different levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this affect the way you surf in a heat? When you come up against your friend, it's more of a relaxed heat whereas if there is someone you don't like it is more intense. So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? I didn't really care too much because you're going to have to compete against them all one day or another!
SM - 26
CHAMP CHATS
And now you've been a regional and national champion, does either go down as your best victory to date? Well yeah the regional was pretty cool but my favourite would defnitely have to be the National title for High School Mens. And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? I surf to get better at surfng otherwise things get too complicated. Now you're from San Clemente in California with some of the best waves in your area like Tretles right on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling? I want to spend some time in Hawaii this winter because the waves are not that great here in the winter... and also Mexico

So now what are your goals for the rest of this year? My upcoming goals would be to do well in the WQS events I get into and see some cool places along the way! Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? I really don't know, hopefully as a pro surfer but I try not to think about that too much!

From Bi'air'ritz to Hoss'air'gor Words: Stu Gaston; Photos: Stu Gaston, Tom Hall & Stephane Becret
There was once a time, many years ago when a little town in the south west of France called Hossegor would regularly witness huge waves hit its shores, indeed waves so big that they would churn sand and gravel dredged from the sea bed of the mighty Atlantic Ocean. This spot became known as La Graviere. Swells were long range and consistent, winds offshore and times were good...

All was good that is until the 13th year of the second millennium AD. Times had changed, weather patterns had altered and the days of offshore winds marrying up with long range swells had become rare. No longer was La Graviere an infamous barreling break but more an onshore graveyard, plagued by messy conditions and a lack of decent swell. If a good day came it was short lived with only one or two locals lucky enough to score. Hossegor cranks into action on one of its increasingly rarer 'good' days. Photo: Tom Hall
33 -
SM Gatien Delahaye scores. Photo: Stu Gaston
From Bi'air'ritz to Hoss'air'gor The locals had no choice but to adapt from the lure of the green room... If the ocean could no longer deliver then they must look elsewhere. They must look to the sky. And so the air was born.

Hot Spots It's actually not that far fetched a story. Hossegor used to be acclaimed for its perfect pits but more recently the decent swells and offshores just haven't been co-operating. So the local next generation have had to adapt their surfing accordingly. Here Harry Timson, Hossegor's token UK resident for the summer, demonstrates how the punch of the French breaks can offer some fun puntability!

surphangaway Over 140 years ago, a certain Phileas Fogg vowed to circumnavigate the world in just 80 days. That was of course 30 years before the frst man took to the air and since then air travel has revolutionised the way we get around the globe. So it's time for us to pay homage to man's miraculous ability to get into the air with our own full length feature. It's time to take a world tour with those magnifcent men and their fying machines, otherwise known as the aerialists of the surfng world.

When and where was your best surf session? Talk us through it. It was Hawaii last year. We woke up early in the morning and Backdoor was amazing. I had the best barrels with friends from the Ripcurl team. It was my best day of surfng ever! What's the worst wipeout of your life? I went for an early surf at Gravière... caught my frst wave, didn't make it and went over the falls. I got hit by my board and cut my head open Do you train as well as surf? Yes the training is hard but I surf more And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? I think I would be a skater What's the healthiest thing you ate today? A banana with orange juice

What got you into surfng? I was born in the surf with my mom and my dad. My dad is a shaper so I was destined to be a surfer When and how did you become sponsored? Last year, Yann Martin gave me the opportunity to be in the Oakley European Team. He trained me and coached me during the Pros Juniors and the other contests. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? The moment that I'm proud of in my surfng career was when I fnished 4th in the fnal at the Lacanau Pro Junior because I guess that it's great to compete with older guys and I had the chance and the waves to beat them until the fnal, I guess that's very good for a 15year old boy!
SM - 220
Tim Bisso
Who in surfng inspires you most? I think Mick Fanning is the best surfer to be inspired because he's really very focused and he has a very powerful but also radical surfng style.

What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I prefer competitions cause I like to compare my surf with others and compete with them and also I love the feeling when you win a heat or the contest haha What song motivates you before a surf? My favorite song before surfng is OrnetteCrazy (Noze remix) because she has a good beat so after I'm motivated haha When and where was your best surf session? Talk us through it. My best surf session, it was in France at La Graviere in April. Perfect barrels, no wind, sunrise and with all my friends out. What's the worst wipeout of your life? My worst wipeout in my life, I think it was in Guadeloupe in a big swell my head hit the reef when I fell in a barrel.
SM - 222
Tim Bisso
What do you do when you don't surf? When I don't surf, I sometimes skate, or chill with my friends or most of the time I do ftness training. Do you train as well as surf? Yes, I train a lot. And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? If I didn't surf at all, I think I would skate because I like the tricks and the sensations while I'm skating. If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? If I had unlimited money, I think I would simply buy a big car to go where I want to f ind the best surf!

Charly Termeau
What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I like free surfng because I can go surf with my friends, have fun times. I like competitions too because that gives me an idea of my level and what I have to train to win the next contest. What song motivates you before a surf? That depends, sometimes I listen to Electro, Techno, or Rap. When and where was your best surf session? Talk us through it. My best surf session was in Keramas earlier this year. There were only 5 of us in the water, 5ft perfect waves for 2 hour session, and I was getting barrelled in every wave. What's the worst wipeout of your life? I was 13 years old, and I was in at Pipeline in big 7-8ft surf. I was alone at the peak, and a really good wave was coming. Everybody was shouting "GO! GO!" So I kind of had to go. I paddled into it, got up, and.... I seriously nose planted!
227 -
SM Charly Termeau chucks out another double grab!
Hot Shots What do you do when you don't surf? I hang out with my friends, play video games, watch surf movies and do physical training So you train as well as surf? Yes I train and surf like 5 sessions a week minimum, and I don't have a maximum! If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? If I had unlimited money, I would buy one house in Indonesia and then I would buy another house somewhere in the world to rent out so I wouldn't have to work and I can just surf all my life.

Where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? In the future, I would like to be in the WCT, in fve or ten years, I would like to make it onto the WCT, or have a really good ranking in the WQS, but I would prefer to qualify for the World Tour.

Next Issue And there you go! If that air fest didn't take you off into the stratosphere of mindsurfing then nothing will! But now it's back to earth with a bump... or is it? Summer has finally arrived for the Northern Hemisphere and those fun filled days of sun and surf lie endlessly ahead of us. And for our friends down south, those pumping warm winter swells are knocking at your shores so life's swell for us all! With all that in mind, we're off on our summer break ourselves too! But never fear, we'll still be here, back at the end of the season with a fresh new batch of stunning shots to share with you all! So until then, do as our friend Dale here has done, get amongst it, get out there and get shredding!
