'A sight for sore eyes!' Well we made it! Yes European surfers everywhere have just survived the longest known flat spell for some years! So our nineteenth issue is full of some tantalising treats to take us all through the summer and into an autumn of awesome swell!

SM Dane Hall opens up with an airshow.
Dane Hall is one of a handful of Brits who has been humble enough to realise that if you're going to get anywhere in the world of surfng, you have to move to where the waves are actually good and consistent. And now he lives a few minutes from one of the best breaks in Europe, Supertubes in Portugal, then there's no looking back. Dane is on a roll and heading for fame and fortune... well as close to it as he can get for now anyway!

SM Dane Hall hits it high.
What got you into surfng? I guess my dad got me into it when I was young and I was hooked, along with mates surfng too it was just natural to get into surfng. How long have you lived in Portugal now? I've lived in Portugal for 5 years now. Do you feel the moves had a positive effect on your surfng? Yes I think my surfng's improved a lot down here, just the variety of waves and consistency makes it a great training ground.

Dane with a huge mane of spray.
The Pro Show When and how did you become sponsored? I started getting sponsored around 16 just by surfng in comps and showing up in mags and being humble to people, all that plus surfng really well and trying to improve everyday. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? I'm most proud of the cover shot I got on Carve mag a while back when I did a trip to Panama with Stokesy and Jayce. Was a great trip with fun waves and good times. Who in surfng inspires you most? I'd have to say Kelly of course, being at his age and still being the best and improving is really inspiring. A lot of other guys really amp me up to be better as well like Mick, Julian, Nat Young, really great to see the growth in their careers. I look up to those guys a lot.

SM Dane drives through the lip.
What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I prefer freesurfng, comps I wanna get better at some, I'm really tying to be a well rounded surfer. There's certain aspects I like about comps and free surfng so I want to be able to do it all. When and where was your best surf session? Supertubos 2 years back. I was in a good rhythm with the waves and it was like 6 foot light offshore and I got 2 or 3 insane barrels. I could choose bad waves that day haha love those sessions. What's the worst wipeout of your life? I'd say when I was in Morocco when I was 18 I think, Anchor Point was pretty big and I wiped out on a set and got dragged under water forever, was pretty heavy.
SM - 14
What song motivates you before a surf? Clique- by BIG Sean, Jay-Z, Kanye, gets me amped What do you do when you don't surf? When I don't surf I train, do yoga, go over footage, just try and keep busy and work as hard as I can, I also work away on racing boats during winter time to pay for my comps and travel etc, keeps me grounded I guess. My parents also have a surf lodge in Peniche so I help with that too, so I can stay busy during flat spells. So you train as well as surf? Yeh I train in the gym, and some yoga too.

SM Dane Hall hitting the lip.
The Pro Show And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? If I didn't surf I'd like to snowboard, such a fun sport. If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? It would have to be a wave pool or wave garden just so you could guarantee surfng everyday of the year, also a super yacht in the Mentawais would be dreamy, I'd have some sick cars too, I could go on all day with this haha. What's the healthiest thing you ate today? I ate a banana this morning. What's your most overused word? I guess I use sick quite a lot, too much actually, probably people are getting sick of me using that word lol

SM Dane driving through with power.
Dane Hall What's your goal for the next year? My goals for this year are to improve all aspects of my surfng, work on clips, shoot photos, focus on getting some results in comps and everntually get a main sponsor with some fnancial backing, and to have fun with it all. And what about the future? Future is simple for me, progress in surfng, travel a lot, spend time with friends, just enjoy everyday and give 110 percent in everything I do.

Kyle Imgraben may still be a grom but he sure surfs way beyond his years. No wonder then that he's already got multiple state champion titles under his belt. We decided we needed to have a chat with this super grom from South Australia.

Age: 16 Nickname: Grommy Years surfng: 6 Where you live: Adelaide, South Australia Sponsors: Quiksilver, Dragon, Skullcandy, Shapers Fins, Nice Life Healthy Living, Farking Deck Pads and Emery Surfboards Local break/s: Seaford. Favourite surfer? Julian Wilson Favourite place to surf? Cactus Favourite surf movie? “Done” Favourite surf trick? I like airs Favourite board? The New “ Black Angel” model by Emery What got you into surfng? My Dad and Uncle took me and my brother surfng and ever since I’ve been hooked! When and how did you become sponsored? My frst sponsor was a surf shop “Preeces” on my 11th birthday – I was the happiest kid ever. And that lead to a deal with O’Neill, but a year after that when I was 13 I won U16 and the Quksilver rep in SA approached me and said he would like to sponsor me. After Quicksilver, Dragon was set up, soon after Farking wanted to put me on a deal, and about a year after that when I won U16s again Skullcandy approached me, so I really just surfed and had fun. Who in surfng inspires you most? Dion Atkinson, he always puts in 100% to everything, he lives about 1km away from me and is in the same surf club as me “Seaford Boardriders” whenever he is home I'm always trying to push my surfng in front of him. What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I love free surfng but nothing can beat the feeling when you win a contest. I think I like free surfng better because I can try and go bigger.

CHAMP CHATS Now the past few years have seen you performing consistently well at all levels, having been South Australia State Champion in both the Under 16 and Under 18 divisions last year. So talk us through those contests and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your titles. Well we have 3 rounds of State Titles. The frst round is just at the end of summer so I was feeling really good going into the frst round, the frst round is always the worst because everyone wants to win which puts the pressure on a bit. I was just surfng everyday trying to make the most of the conditions and not get frustrated. I won the frst one which was great because it sets up the rest of the year for me. By the time round two come round it was at my home break and I was super excited because I love surfng my local its such an easy wave to understand and I just feel like I'm free surfng when ever there are contests there. I ended up winning U16 the frst day which was sick because I was now the U16 state champion and I was into the fnals for U18 the next day!! The next day the surf was almost as good as home gets with only 4 people out at each time! Couldn’t have been more stoked because I already won U16 so of course I was feeling good about going into the U18, I had nothing to loose so I was just going into it as hard as I could... I went out for the heat and my frst two waves I got long runners straight away and was just frothing. Paddled out to the back and sat there for 10 minutes then got a set with 2 minutes to go I was just trying not to fall and then went for a punt at the end rode out of that and was just super stoked because I knew I took out both divisions! I was so happy.
SM - 22
CHAMP CHATS
And you've also taken a number of win in other contests as well. Yeah last year I also won the U18 division of the Berry Bay Surf Jam in York Peninsula which was big. I also won grom of the year in “Seaford Boardriders. Tell us about some of those memorable moments. When I won grom of the year I was so happy had such a good time competing against everyone, they're all so good and push my surfng so I was just the happiest kid ever! Winning the Berry Bay Surf Jam was amazing because it was the frst ever Berry Bay Surf Jam so I really wanted to go well and it ended up paying off so I was super stoked!

SM - 24
I imagine you had to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders. How do you rate your surfng peers over in Australia at the moment then? Yeah there’s defnately so many amazing surfers at the moment from all over Aus. There's Quinn Bruce from Queensland, Jack Robinson from West Aus and Kalani Ball from New South Wales. You've been surfng against these guys most of your competitive life. There must be different levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this affect the way you surf in a heat? Well when I’m competing interstate I just try and stay relaxed and surf as good as possible So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? Defnately Quinn and Kalani because they're both so consistent and it puts you off knowing how they can drop a big score in a couple of minutes to go.
25 -
SM Kyle Imgraben's surfing is definitely pointing in the right direction. Photo: Joe Wallace
CHAMP CHATS
SM - 26
CHAMP CHATS Now you've had various wins and been a State Champion, so what goes down as your best victory to date? Probably U18 Two years running now And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? Surfng South Australia has set up a training program with a professional trainer that gives us sheets to take home and work on each month. Staying on top of ftness is a massive key to success in surfng, I try to stay on top of my ftness and watch what I eat but I'm young so of course I love anything that involves candy or sugar! Now you're from South Australia with some of the best waves in your area right on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling? Next year I hope to travel to the US, Tahiti and Hawaii but I’m going to Bali later this year. So now what are your goals for the rest of this year? Finals for Nationals, Win the Cold Water Classic in South Australia, get some good shots and go big! Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? I hope to be on the WQS and eventually the WCT.

Almost a year ago, Ramzi Boukhiam earned the title of 2012 ASP European Pro Junior Champion. It was a close fought race at the top between just a few of the surfers after the initial 3-star contest in the season set them apart from the rest of the feld. This year however, things are very different. There's much more of a level playing feld with the big point earning events at the end of the season and so after just two 1-star contests so far, it's seeming to be anybody's game! So for now, here's our pick of the top contenders, one of whom we'd very much expect to be walking away with this year's title!

SM Gabriel Medina took top scores, the glory of winning and earnt his place on Tour in 2011.
The Goss
Two summers ago, Gabriel Medina made surfng history. At only the age of 17, he made it to 17th place on the ASP rankings earning him a place onto the ASP World Tour, after monumental wins at both the ASP Airwalk Lacanau Pro Junior event and the ASP 6-star Prime Sooruz Lacanau Pro event, becoming the frst surfer in the 32year history of the Lacanau event to win both the 6-Star main event and Pro Junior event in the same year. During the event, he posted four perfect 10 point rides and even a perfect 20 point heat score in one of his semi-fnals. So glory came his way following his high posting scores and the door to the Tour lay wide open to him.

SM Kolohe Andino came close to glory but still ended up on Tour anyway.

SM Filipe Toledo found glory and also his ticket to the Tour last year at Lacanau.
The Goss
Then this time last year and another young Brazilian showed up and blew up on the famous French sandbanks of Lacanau. Filipe Toledo took his frst star event win at the 2012 ASP Sooruz Lacanau Pro and similarly the glory of the win gave him the hunger to go up the rankings as he too then made the Tour at the start of this year.

SM Glenn Hall missed out on the glory, but his scores also took him onto the Tour.
The Goss
Also last year saw Glenn Hall fnally make it onto the Tour with a semi-fnal fnish at Lacanau and much needed points from the 5-star event. However, his glory was short lived as a nasty fall earlier this year at Fiji put his Tour dreams on hold .

SM Marc Lacomare will be making eyes on the winning glory this year at Lacanau.
The Goss
So now the big question on everyone's lips is who's going to get the scores, earn the glory and get themselves onto the Tour this year. As the European leg of the ASP Star events get underway in two weeks time with the 2013 Sooruz Lacanau Pro, many will be hoping that some of the European surfers edging up the rankings may well be in for a chance.

SM With a Top 34 spot in his sights, Marc Lacomare will be looking for big scores at Lacanau.
The Goss
One such surfer who's been doing very well recently is Marc Lacomare from France. With a second place at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime in Brazil back in May and having just made it to the Round of 16 at the Vans US Open of Surfng, he'll be looking for a win back in his home country as the perfect platform to confrming his qualifcation to the Tour at the end of the year. So we could be in for some exciting surfng as the ASP crew come back to France in just under two weeks time!

Surphang Magazine
So here comes summer! After years of quite disappointing summers in the UK, we've certainly be basking in some delightful weather recently. Just a shame the waves haven't been up to much! Still we've had plenty to keep us busy, voting for online videos of surfers desperate to impress and get themselves into the next round! It may be an interesting way to generate entrants into international contests but we've been delving beneath all the hype in search of the true talented highlights. So we'll be bringing you the best of the Groms who would be King in the next issue plus many more highlights that will celebrate the best of this year's summer and welcome in what autumn has to offer!

Glenn Hall speaking after his injury sustained at Restaurants: 'This time I payed the price. I don't regret anything though, the reward if I made that wave would have been so sweet and I would take that chance again today if I had it. And I would still vote for Fiji for president. I will heal and be back on the horse ASAP.' No Guts, No Glory!
