SM Peterson Crisanto punts high above the playful waves of Lacanau.
Peterson Crisanto is the latest Brazilian surfer with his heart set on making the World Tour, following in the footsteps of recent rookies Filipe Toledo and Gabriel Medina. Currently sitting comfortably in the Top 50, he will be doing all he can to earn those crucial points that could turn his dream into reality! We caught up with Peterson in Lacanau recently to ask him more about trying to make it onto the WCT.

What got you into surfing? My dad and my uncle surfing all time and this motivated me to give it a go When and how did you become sponsored? When I was 13 years old, Ze Paulo, Billabong team manager saw me surfing and sponsored me Who in surfing inspires you most? Dane Reynolds What do you prefer, free surfing or competitions and why? Both! In free surfing you can try new stuff, new tricks...but competition can put me on the WCT, where I always dream of being!

Now the past few years have seen you performing consistently well at all levels, beginning with some significant wins on the ASP Australasia Pro Junior Tour at the ASP 6-Star Hurley Pro Junior in 2011 and then the ASP 5-Star Oakley Pro Junior in 2012. So talk us through those contests and the highs and lows that lead to your success in your Pro Junior years. Those were big events for me, where I got a lot of attention. What I liked least was when I lost some junior contests here and my spot in the World Junior Championships. But what I liked most was when I won those events haha Since then you've made a successful move onto the ASP Men's Rankings stepping up and winning the ASP 6-Star Reef Pro El Salvador in July this year. Tell us about that and some of the other contest highlights for you in recent years. Yes, that contest in Punta Roca, El Salvador was magic for me! That wave is simply perfect. All the competitors were really stoked! I also made a semi at Lacanau, when I lost to Charles Martin, who was the eventual winner. And looking back, how hard is it to move up from the Pro Juniors to finally surfing in Star and Prime events? When I started competing on the WQS, the responsibility increased but now I'm competing with many surfers who have inspired me and that's pretty cool!

I imagine you have to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. How do you rate your surfing peers across the world at the moment then? The level of surfing from these guys is just too good! The older surfers continue surfing solid more and more and the new generation are coming with new tricks! You've been surfing against these guys most of your competitive life. There must be different levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this affect the way you surf in a heat? I always keep in my head that when it's time to compete, it's time to compete and that comes first. Out of the heat I have many friends. Rivalry I leave in the heat. So which of them do you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? All of them are great surfers and one mistake, one bad choice of wave can result in elimination whoever you're surfing against

Now you've had various wins, so what goes down as your best victory to date? Definately the 6-Star in El Salvador And what about training? How do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? When you compete around the world you don't have much time for many things. I try to eat well and do cardio workouts and stretching though.

Now you're from Brazil with some of the best waves in your area right on your doorstep and you've no doubt travelled to and surfed some amazing spots around the world! So where's left? Where do you still want to travel to and surf? Man, I've never surfed Trestles and I think I would love that wave! Now with the main contest season ahead before the end of year rankings, what are your goals for the rest of this year? I will try with all my strength to get an excellent result in the Prime event at Cascais, Portugal and maybe a good result in the Prime at Haleiwa. Finally, where do you see yourself in five years time? If God's willing on the WCT, competing with my idols.

Miguel Pupo popped up into the Top 34 a couple of years ago now and was one of the first of the new generation of Brazilian surfers to start dominating the World Tour. Although he's not yet won a CT event, he's got a few Primes to his name and this Pro Junior Champion will certainly be looking to hold further future champion titles for sure. Though he'd be equally happy to see any of his fellow Brazilians lift the trophy. Time for a few words to find out more!

When and how did you become sponsored? I joined the Hurley team two and a half years ago now. I'd become ASP South America Pro Junior Champion in 2010 and reached fifth in the US Open of Surfing as well as a third place finish at the Prime event in the Canary islands so they signed me up soon after all that. Hurley is like a second family to me! You certainly had a successful season that year and becoming the 2010 ASP South America Pro Junior Champion must have been a highlight. So talk us through those contests and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your title. Well I came to the last contest really relaxed as I already had three wins so the job was already done! Even though I lost in the second round I was still the champion. More important for me though was all the team going on to the World Junior Tour back then. I felt it was one of the best that Brazil had ever had, with great names of the new generation, and the chances were certainly very good for Brazil to win another title so I was stoked when I did!

Since then you've made a very successful move onto the ASP Men's Rankings stepping up and winning not one, not two, but three ASP Prime events, the Lowers Pro and Cold Water Classic in 2011 and then the Hang Loose Pro in Brazil last year. Tell us about some of those memorable moments. Well to win a contest in Brazil was something that I really wanted to accomplish. I’d won the two Prime events in the US the year before but I really wanted to show that I could win at home as well, especially in Fernando de Noronha, which has incredible tubes. I was stoked to have won the Final against Jean (da Silva) too. He beat my friend Gabriel (Medina) the day before who wasn't happy about that. His mom told me I had to win the contest to make up for it haha so I was happy I did!
So do you think the new generation of Brazilians will continue to make a mark on the contest scene in the next few years? I think that this generation is healthier and more focused. We’ve all known each other since we were like 12-years-old, and we’ve been traveling together. Me, Alejo, Jadson, and Gabriel are always fighting for first place. So we just push each other. I don’t know, it’s just kind of different. We see each other do well and we don’t really get jealous, we just get really excited and want to do exactly the same thing. I think that’s why the level of surfers from Brazil is just going up and up.

Is there a certain sense of camaraderie between you all when you're competing then? Yeah, I think that the Brazilians are pretty close. We like to see our countrymen doing well. If I’m at a comp and I see a Brazilian in the semis, then of course I’m going to get down to the beach and clap them in, you know? When I was the last Brazilian in those finals, I was really wanting to make it, and it was cool to see all the other Brazilians on the beach shouting me on. It's good to have that kind of support. So would you be surprised to see a Brazilian World Champ some time soon? We are all working hard for that, and right now is the right time because everyone is surfing good and the brands are really supporting us now. Just a few years ago it was pretty hard, but now you can get sponsored by brands from America and everything. I’m so stoked to have my sponsors Hurley supporting me and sending me everywhere.

It's Nice in Nicaragua! Words: Stu Gaston & Photos: Brian Scott
Nicaragua may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of surfing in Central America, but it really is one of those places that offers everything a surfer needs for an awesome surfing experience! First and foremost it's home to a huge number of surf breaks up and down the coastline. Then of course there's the year-round year-round surf, warm waters and great waves, all just some of the things that are causing Nicaragua to gain popularity amongst surfers – especially when you compare the uncrowded beaches and seas in this country to the busy waters of nearby Costa Rica, probably why it's earnt its status as 'the Costa Rica of twenty years ago!' So we asked local photographer Brian Scott to give us his perspective and so here follows his views of how nice it is in Nicaragua!

Being twenty-one can be a lot of fun! You can do anything you want to (as long as it's legal!), you're no longer a kid, a teen, a youth, you've reached adulthood! But for some that can bring with it a whole new heap of pressures, especially in the surfing world as you move from the Pro Juniors into the Mens division where you can suddenly find yourself competing against surfers twice your age with easily twice your experience. So our 'Hot Shots' this issue are five previously successful junior surfers who are all now out to make their mark in the big boys world of surfing giants!

Although the contests haven't always gone his way so far in 2013, he will most likely continue to follow in Joel Parkinson's footsteps and become an ASP World Champion contender in the not too distant future!

What first got you into surfing? My Dad and his brothers would always surf so I was around the water a lot and eventually started surfing.
And how big a part does surfing play in your life? Surfing plays a huge roll in my life today, it's everything to me! It's taught me respect, introduced me to many cool people around the world and people I choose to surround myself with everyday... its a lifestyle! What do you prefer, free surfing or competitions and why? I prefer both! I'm really competitive in everything but at the same time there's nothing like having a good old free surf!
When and how did you become sponsored? I must've been about 10 years old down at the Iron brothers Pine Trees Classic. I dinged my board and came in complaining to my Dad. I couldn't surf and a guy had some quick fix... he ended up sponsoring me!

Here we are again then! Another year of the ASP World Tour approaches its nail biting climax and as ever the question on everybody's lips is, “Can Kelly win again? Already the ASP has issued its 'World Title in play at upcoming Rip Curl Pro Portugal' scenarios with Slater needing a 3rd or better to take the title decision to Hawaii if Mick Fanning were to win and three other possible combinations, though even if Kelly finished 25th and Mick 5th then Kelly still has a chance at the title again.

Maybe Mick or Joel again, even Taj finally on top but what about seeing Jordy Smith raise the trophy high above his head, the first South African to be World Champion in over three decades. Now that would be worth watching, history in the making! Well wherever your loyalties lie, only time will tell who will be No.1 in 2013!
