'It's raining, it's pouring but the surfers are scoring!' Yes it's that time of year again that all surfers love – Autumn! Those epic September sessions got this great season rolling and now the Autumn swells themselves are rolling in off the Atlantic at regular intervals too! Just a bit of a shame about all that damp stuff that these big low pressures bring in too! Bit of a catch 22 situation there – after all there's no surf without storms but if there were no storms there'd be no rain! Even so our intrepid photographer friends have been roving round Europe this month, dodging the wet stuff to bring you a brief glimpse of the epic surf that has been gracing our shores. So snatch a moment between surfs to enjoy SURPHANG TWENTY TWO!

SM Robbie D'Amico drives his tail round!

Roberto D'Amico lives in Rome, Italy. Not the obvious place for a pro surfer to reside as Italy is not renowned for its surf. Yet mixing half his year at home with a summer season in Hossegor seems to have afforded Robbie enough quality surfing experience to make him one of Italy's top surfers. We managed to grab a moment with him to find out more.

SM - 10

The Pro Show What first got you into surfing? Well I started off windsurfing beacuse my parents did it then I had a bodyboard and I used to take off on bigger waves on it but one day a friend of mine gave me his board to try, with fins and it was way easier to control and I loved it, was the best feeling in the world! When and how did you become sponsored? I used to surf only in the Summer so I didn’t have a winter wetsuit. Marco Gregori the guy who helped get me into surfing took me to the Quiksilver Grommet Series in Ostia. I won it they decided to take me to another comp and I won it as well and so qualified f or the world finals in Capbreton (in 2003). I got fifth and so Quiksilver started to give me some product and a contract for the next few years. Who in surfing inspires you most? I’ve been Surfing a lot with Nick Rozsa the last month. I think he’s one of the most talented surfers in the world and of course he inspires me a lot. What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? That question is very hard: I love competing, I love to win and I hate to lose! Contest's are very hard – most of the time we compete in horrible condition, less than 1 foot and only 20 minutes of time. I've lost many heats that I could easily have won. I prefer freesurfing because then I can show my best, I can do what I want on a wave without thinking if it would score in a comp! I think you can enjoy your surfing more and make it better day by day. But seriously after a while without competing I'd feel like I’m missing something! I’ll not stop competing I’ll just tackle it in a different way. Now you've been Italian Junior Surfing Champion many times over the past few years, so talk us through that experience! Competing at home is completely different, I feel very relaxed and happy to do it. I ask myself many times when I’m abroad and I have to go back home for a comp : WHY DO I HAVE TO DO IT? Well, representing Italy means a lot to me. When I was a kid, I looked up to Nicola Bresciani, he was always there winning every contest He put Italian surfing up there. I would love to inspire the new generetion as he did me.

SM

Robbie racks up some air time.

Since then you've made a successful move into the ASP Pro Junior and Men's events around the world, with probably your best result coming last year at the Sunset Pro Junior in Hawaii. Tell us about that and some of the other contest highlights for you in recent years. I had a lot of shockers the last few years in the Pro Juniors, so I wasn’t sure whether to actually even register for the Sunset Pro Junior. It was very expensive and I didn’t know if it was worth all that money. Fortunately though it went my way! I felt very confident during the heats, conditions were perfect and I got to surf in Sunset with only 3 other guys out – it was like a dream! I finished 9th and I was really happy with that! I wish there were more comps in waves like that!

SM - 12

I imagine you have to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. How do you rate your surfing peers across the world at the moment then? The surfing level is getting higher every year! The new generation is growing with a full repertoire, rail surfing and new school. I don’t rate my surfing as a world best or a potential WCT, I just love to do it, work as hard as I can to make it better and happy to see the results. And what about training? How do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? I have a friend of mine that supports me in my training, his name is Luca Loreti, he believes in me more than anyone. I used to go to the gym 4 times a week. I think training is very important not only for the surfing progression but even for your body.

13 -

SM Robbie's backhand attack.

The Pro Show So you're from Italy but now live in France. How do the surfing scenes in the two countries compare? I come to France every summer but I don’t quite live here yet! The surfing scene is completely different. They are really professional in everything they do here, they have some of the best European surfers and the State supports and believes in the sport. In Italy after football nothing really counts! I hope it will change one day soon though. When and where has your best surf session been then? I think 2 years ago at Lakey Peak in Sumbawa... couple of friends and a lot of perfect barrels. And what's the worst wipeout of your life so far? For sure this winter in Hawaii. It wasn’t a wipe out, I was surfing Pipeline with Leo. At the start I was very scared then I started to get a little bit of confidence and I went a little bit to deep. Big set came and about 20 guys left their guns in front of me. I went in panic before the wave hit me. I never felt so much power in a wave. I hit the reef with my head, broke my leash and the next wave right after just smashed me again... yery bad experience!

SM - 14

The Pro Show You've no doubt travelled to and surfed some amazing spots around the world! So where's left? Where do you still want to travel to and surf? The world is huge! I would like to discover Europe, driving through all the best waves. I think there are still a lot of unridden waves, so I would like to do that as soon as possible. I'm starting by going to the Canaries. What do you do when you don't surf? If I don’t do anything I start to go crazy! Living in Italy sometimes it’s very hard. It can be fat everywhere for a month and you really need to put your energy into something else. I train, I skate, and I did a couple of Jujitsu lessons this year which I liked a lot. What's your goal for the next year? After 10 years with Quiksilver, I just signed with Reef so I’m really excited and positive to work with them on new ventures and new projects. And what about the future? I would like to organize some beach cleaning at home, work on some video projects and I will try to do a couple of European WQS events and see how that goes.

Leonardo Fioravanti has to be one of the best surfers in the world currently in his age group. The formidable fifteen year old Italian surfer started this year winning the International RipCurl Gromsearch at Bells Beach and has ended it as ASP European Pro Junior Champion. Leo's surfing is literally on fire at the moment and we were lucky enough to work with him this summer and chat about how this epic year bas been for him.

What got you into surfing? My brother Matteo started surfing before me so he got me into surfing When and how did you become sponsored? By Quiksilver I was in Portugal on a trip with my family friend Lorenzo when I was about 9 and they saw me surfing and they wanted to sponsor me straight away, and then from Redbull again the year after I was in Portugal and the world team manager Andy King wanted to see me and make the decision. I surfed 6 foot Coxos when I was 11 and that's how I got in!

Who in surfing inspires you most? Kelly Slater inspires me the most! What do you prefer, free surfing or competitions and why? I prefer competition because I have always been competitive in my life and it gives me more motivation

SM - 22

CHAMP CHATS

Now this past year has seen you performing amazingly well at all levels, but becoming ASP European Pro Junior Champion must be the highlight. So talk us through those contests and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your title. Well by the end I was really going for the title! At first though I just wanted to qualify for Brazil but then after I won the Pro Junior in the Canaries, I was 300 points away from Vasco who was in second place and then the next event I made it to the semis and I took the title! It was more of a surprise for me because at the start, I didnt think I could do it! I was really happy and proud of myself that I did though! I know you had to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders to earn the title this year. So how do you rate your surfing peers in Europe at the moment? The surfing in Europe is really high, there are so many good surfers, and then there are a few Tahitians that smash it like Mihimana Braye and Mateia Hiquily, so I had to surf as good as possible to win. I gave it all everything I had in each event as of course did they!

23 -

SM Leo Fioravanti finds time for some bazzas. Photo: Jean-Marc Amoyal

SM - 24

CHAMP CHATS

You've been surfing against these guys most of your competitive life. There must be different levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this affect the way you surf in a heat? Well I don't really think about the others in a heat, I just think about myself and how good I have to surf, and after I look at the stuff but not in a heat. You've also taken a number of wins in other contests as well like the International Rip Curl Gromsearch earlier in the year. Tell us about some of those memorable moments. Bells Beach was a great moment for me, there were all the best U16 surfers in the world, I also had my brother there with me and he helped me a lot, I had some good boards and I liked the waves so I was having a lot of fun and I guess that's what helped me to win the overall event!

25 -

SM Leo loving the fun conditions at Lacanau this summer. Photo: Stu Gaston

SM - 26

CHAMP CHATS

Now you're often competing against surfers from all across the world and holding your own. But which of them do you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? I don't really mind who I draw in a heat, because if I draw them in the first round or the final it doesn't change anything, like I said, if you surf every heat as good as you can, your outcome will be successful. So you've had various wins and are now European Champion. What goes down as your best victory to date then? Probably the Gromsearch but all the Pro Juniors I did in Australia and Hawaii, and just from surfing so much has helped a lot to achieve it. And what about training? How do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? Every now and then I do some fitness training, but I mostly just surf a lot, I feel like I need to grow first and then train a lot, I will start next year to train a lot more! Now you live in Hossegor with some of the best waves in your area like Graviere right on your doorstep and you've no doubt travelled to and surfed some amazing spots around the world! So where's left? Where do you still want to travel to and surf? I haven't been to Mexico and the Mentawaiis, I want to go to those two places so bad, hopefully next year I will go and surf some dreamy barrels!

After such a great 2013, what are your goals for next year then? Next year I'm going to do some WQS events, again I'm going to do the Pro Junior series in Europe and see if I can win again, and just surf a lot and train hard and improve as much as I can! Finally, where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? Well hopefully on WCT, it's my goal and I'm going to give it everything I have to get there!!! Well we're right behind you on that and look forward to seeing what comes next! Thanks and I would like to thank all my sponsors and family this year, thanks!!!!

Going Del Places Words: stu gaston; Photos: Stu Gaston, Jean-Marc Amoyal & Victor Pique

There's no denying that the breaks of South West France offer some of the best surf in Europe. It's no surprise then that this area produces some of the best surfers in Europe. After all, you just have to look at the recent success of the French Junior Surfing Team in events such as the World Junior Surfing Games and how many of the individual surfing team members reach the finals or even win most of the Junior surfing events across Europe and even the world! So on our second trip to this wave rich European surf hub this year, we caught up with two young French surfers who will certainly be going places in the future!

Going Del Places

Arthur Lassee lives in Seignosse, ten minutes from this! Though of course it's not always this good but the sheer fact that if often does get this good is probably why this native of Martinique is such a good surfer for his age! It would be very easy though, with waves like this frequently on offer to get picky about what you surf. But not Arthur...

33 -

Going Del Places

For Arthur is just as happy to be surfing on days like this when this one off barrel came through at Plage du Prevent in Capbreton while the wind prior to Cyclone Christian was battering the rest of the French coast. And it is for this reason that Arthur and indeed other French surfers are so good!

35 -

SM - 36

Going Del Places One of them is Thomas Delplace who also lives in Seignosse and who when he saw the surf this day, just got right on in there, eyeing any ramps that could get him the airborne opportunities he craved for a fun surf. It was far from perfect, but that didn't matter because Tom knows that if he's going to get what he wants, he just has to go for it!

Going Del Places

43 -

surphangaway Next morning, they were both back on it with Arthur now taking advantage of the junky but smaller surf to really put his surfing skills to the test. After all, later that week he was to surf in the European RipCurl Gromsearch final at an as yet unnamed spot so he was very much in comp training mode at this point!

surphangaway So after just two days of shooting (as when we next met the following Tuesday it chucked it down with rain!) we scored such a huge array of shots which go to prove the inherent talent of these two young surfers who are destined to go places. But why? Simply because they have the drive and determination to get in there and surf whatever the weather and it is that positive attitude that will help make these two and probably many other French surfers serious future contenders in the world of surfing!

Surphalosophy Woodsy's Way Words: stu gaston & Photos: Tim Borrow

As a junior Australian surfer, James Woods posted some credible results, Under 16 State Champion in 2006 and then a 9th at the World Junior Surfing Championships in Portugal in 2007. But like many surfers, James wasn't into competitive surfing, he enjoyed riding big waves just too much! Which is why we now find him working his summers sharing his passion, earning himself enough cash to then go wave hunting during the winter. We caught up with James to find out more about his way to get the most out of his surfing life!

67 -

Name:

James Woods

Age: 22 Nickname: Woodsy Years surfing: 12 Where you live: Well I've been working and living in France with Star Surf Camps but I guess home is either South Africa or Australia Sponsors: O'Neill, Joistik Surfboards (Nick Blair), and I guess Star Surf Camps take care of me as well Local break/s: Long Beach in South Africa when I was younger and now Burleigh Heads in Australia

69 -

SM James Woods backhand airs are equally as impressive.

surphalosophy

SM - 70

Woodsy's Way Favourite surfer? I have done a bit of surfing with Albee Layer and Matt Meola the last couple years and I would have to say those two are pretty crazy from huge airs to huge waves you don't get much better than that Favourite place to surf? Teahupoo is such an amazing wave and we scored it last year but, at home at Burleigh is such an amazing wave too Favourite surf movie? I am not exactly sure, Lost Atlas isn't too bad Favourite surf trick? I think everybody loves getting barreled the most I know it is my favourite and a lot of other people Favourite board? I guess it depends on the conditions. I like surfing longboards and strange boards when it is small but my favourite board would be my 9'6 Owl Chapman I had made last year in Hawaii

71 -

SM Woodsy working the wave.

surphalosophy

SM - 72

Woodsy's Way What got you into surfing? Being at the beach all day everyday with my family was pretty much what got me going When and how did you become sponsored? I won a RipCurl comp when I was 12 in South Africa and they ended up sponsoring me

What moment are you most proud of in your surfing career so far? I could say that I am really stoked on the way my brother has been surfing lately otherwise I had an awesome session 3 years ago at Jaws and a fun session this past year at Waimea Who in surfing inspires you most? The boys on Maui who are doing their thing at Jaws, they all charge so hard and surf so good when the waves are small

73 -

SM James Woods jumping off a fun looking ramp.

surphalosophy

SM - 74

Woodsy's Way What do you prefer, free surfing or competitions and why? I personally prefer surfing big waves, comps absolutely suck because of the tiny waves all the time and you are under pressure to get good waves in a short time limit. What song motivates you before a surf? Eye of the Tiger When and where was your best surf session? Any session where it is perfect barrels and me and my buddies are all out What's the worst wipeout of your life? I have had a few but the worst would have to be at Margaret River where I free fell from the top of an 8 footer and hit the bottom out the back and came up seeing stars

75 -

SM Woodsy slobbing it up!

surphalosophy

SM - 76

Woodsy's Way What do you do when you don't surf? Usually I just chill out or hang with friends, maybe play some tennis or something Do you train as well as surf? I like to keep fit but I don't have a crazy training regime And if you didn't surf at all, what would you be doing? I have no idea what I would be, I am at university now studying so I guess I would be at university either way?

77 -

SM Woodsy where he's most at home!

surphalosophy

SM - 78

Woodsy's Way If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? You would have to at least stop poverty and world hunger and then just hook me and all my friends up What's the healthiest thing you ate today? Apple What's your goal for the next year? Try find the biggest waves I can around Europe And what about the future? Keep studying hopefully get a decent salary for surfing big waves and the odd comp here and there as well as working with Star Surf Camps in France and Fuerteventura

79 -

Hot Shots When and how did you become sponsored? I become sponsored 7 years ago, when I was 11 exactly. The Quiksilver Team manager Gorka Yarritu called me while I was at home doing homework. He called me to ask if I would be interested in joining their team. What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I like both. Free surfing is nice because you can take better waves than in the contests and improve your surfing skills as well. However, I love contests because I like to compare myself with the other riders from the other countries.

What moment are you most proud of in your surfing career so far? It could be tricky to choose one moment but each contest that I reach a good position, practicing some good surfing on the way, is a great feeling for me generally. Who in surfing inspires you most? Taj Burrow. I can remember that I watched few videos of Taj when I was young and I was amazed. These videos encouraged me to start practicing this sport. When and where was your best surf session? Mmm‌I would choose one session on Mundaka. It happened a few years ago. Mundaka was pumping so cool and I can remember that I got three perfect barrels. What is the worst wipeout of your life? It was in France. The wave was big and heavy. I started paddling quite late and... You know the rest. What do you do when you don’t surf? I like so much snorkeling, specially fishing for octopuses. The fishing of octopuses can be done just when the sea is calm so that is perfect! I also like going out with my friends and having some parties to have fun as well!

Bailey's Big Day Out Words & Photos: Stu Gaston

In the last week of October 2013, while many surfers back home were wrangling over the state of competitive surfing along some of our wave starved shores, one forthing fifteen year old was fying the fag for the future of Great British surfing in the wave fields off French soil! That surfer was Will Bailey from Croyde in Devon and he had earnt himself the place to take on seven of the top European junior surfers in the European final of the 2013 RipCurl Gromsearch, taking place in South West France. We were lucky enough to join him for this experience and so have documented not only the day of the competition itself but also the preparation and aftermath of what was probably one of the more gruelling weeks of Will's surfing career so far. But with hopefully a glowing future ahead of him, this could well be just the first of many more to come!

The contest had a holding period during that last week so on the first day, Will was keen to get in the water and get used to the conditions. With Cyclone Christian brewing out in the Atlantic, Plage du Prevent in Capbreton was the only surfable option and so Will put his quiver of boards through their paces.

Conditions deteriorated by the second day with the storm fast approaching and so we sought shelter from the wind and weather at Hendaye on the Spanish border. The waves were still pretty solid but Will got on with his contest preparation under the watchful eye of his coach, Damon Beveridge.

Finally, they called the contest on the day after the storm had passed. Will was really focused but this was not a strong enough match for the local wave knowledge of the French who dominated the event leading to an all French final and thus the winner.

The Goss On Wednesday 30th October 2013 the contest directors looked favourably on the conditions at Plage du Prevent, Capbreton and called the European RipCurl Gromsearch on for a 10 o'clock start. So with gradually improving tides and swell dropping to a more manageable size, the competition got underway with eight of the best Under 16 surfers from France, Spain, Portugal and the UK.
