Marc Lacomare can look back on Twenty Thirteen with pride. At this moment in time, Marc himself may not be feeling it, having just missed out on making it onto the World Tour by an agonising three places (especially after actually being up in the Top 32 earlier in the year!), but he's still had a really impressive twelve months as he's been moving up towards his fnal goal, joining the top surfers in the world on the CT.

But this was just the start for Marc, as he then went out to Australia for the second contest in the inaugural ASP World Junior Tour where he ended up winning the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships at North Narrabeen, beating none other than Nat Young in the fnal. Even back then, Marc was proving he had what it takes to go far!

But Marc's fnest moment in 2013 came at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime in Rio de Janeiro where he made the fnal and despite a 10-point ride, was narrowly beaten by Australian Mitch Coleborn. Still the points he earned instantly propelled him up into 21st place on the rankings and so a place on the CT looked to be his!

The Pro Show Marc seemed to be on a roll until he came up against Nat Young again, this time in the Round of 16 at the US Open of Surfng held at the infamous Huntington Beach. This time though Young was to come out on top, leaving Marc high and dry.
Who can say what goes on in a surfer's mind, but Marc never seemed to get back the same momentum he'd had back in Brazil. One things for sure though, he'll be back in 2014 ready once more to get himself up there and on the Tour!

Criere Cranks It Up! Words: Stu Gaston Photos: Stu Gaston & Guillaume Arrieta
Andy Criere has had an awesome twelve months. Sure not everything has gone absolutely the way he would have wanted, like missing out by one spot on a place at the ASP World Junior Championships, but with a third place fnish at the ISA World Junior Surfng Games at the beginning of the year and then fnishing as the French National Junior Champion, Andy's got plenty to be pleased about as he looks back on his Twenty Thirteen. So we caught up with him to ask more about his success.

What got you into surfng? I was quite hyperactive at school and my parents knew I needed something to do to channel all my energy. Because I live near the beach they sent me to surf school and I really enjoyed it so now I fnd surfng and school can be a really good mix. Who in surfng inspires you most? Defnitely Kelly Slater as World Champion but also Andy Irons and the rivalry they had between them. When and where was your best surf session? At Culs Nuls during the winter two years ago, it was just perfect barrelling lefts on a 18 second period 6 ft swell. I had the longest rides I’ve ever had in Hossegor. And what about your worst wipeout? In Lanzarote I took off on a right at a secret spot, but took off too late, smacked my board and just died. I was pummelled against the reef so many times.

When and how did you become sponsored? When I was 13, Billabong sponsored me after I won a contest in Biarritz. After that Reef and Electric took me on and have supported me ever since. What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I think if you can mix both then you’d be the best surfer you can be; competition drives me to be better but free surfng reminds me why I’m doing it!

SM Andy Criere goes for a sunlit slob grab! Photo: Stu Gaston
Now, two thousand and thirteen has been a good year for you on the whole coming to a great fnish after you’ve just become Under 18 French Junior Champion. So frst talk us through that contest and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your title. I had to surf three heats because I was seeded through to round two. The advantage is that there are less heats left until the fnal but the disadvantage is the other surfers you then compete against in that round have already warmed up into the contest waves. Fortunately though, I still managed to win all of my heats and the fnal, beating some top surfers from the ASP rankings on the way. And what about earlier in the year when you had highlights like placing 3rd in the Under 18 of the ISA World Junior Championships? How’s the year been for you over all looking back now? The year has been really busy. I started with the Pro Juniors in Australia which was a great experience before back in France I had the four French Open contests which I fnished second over all, also coming frst in the Juniors. That set me up perfectly for the World Juniors. I hoped I could make the semis there but was stoked on getting third in the fnals. I was lucky that the lefts were so good, my boards were going great and the French team were behind me all the way. After that, it was back to Europe for the Pro Juniors and I had a pretty good season. When the contest’s waves were good I was happy with how I did but disappointed I missed out in the 3-star event in the Canaries but the waves just weren’t going my way. Still I fnished seventh overall and only missed out on going to Brazil for the ASP World Juniors by 50 points. But to be back home and then go on to win the French Junior Championship has been a great end to my year.
SM - 26
CHAMP CHATS You’ve had to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders during all these contests both at home and abroad. First then, how do you rate your surfng peers over in France at the moment? In France at the moment, Marc Lacomare, Maxime Huscenot and Joan Duru are really good and then at Junior level, Leo Fioravanti and Natxo Gonzales are surfng so well. In the girls, Justine Dupont and Pauline Ado are the real stand outs. And what about the surfng talent in your age range across the globe? The Australians really impress at the moment and the Hawaiians are always at the top of their game. And now you're national champion, does that go down as your best victory to date? To fnish the season becoming champion was great but actually my bronze at the World Junior Championships stands out for me more because it shows me what I could achieve in the future.

SM Andy Criere grabs a little more air time before the year's out! Photo: Guillaume Arrieta
So now you’re a champ, what are your goals for the year to come? Well next year I want to go one better and qualify for the ASP World Junior Championships but feel ready for it at the same time and get as good a result as I can. And I want to improve my surfng in both good and bad waves which should help me moving onto the WQS. And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? I train most just by surfng and making sure I do proper exercising before I surf. But I think that having really good equipment is also key to helping push my surfng as well as having great coaches and trainers who support me and my surfng. Now you're from Hendaye on the Basque Coast with some of the best waves that both France and Spain have to offer right on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling? I prefer to fnd the best conditions I can around Europe, so I’m off to the Canaries again in December and after that I will probably plan a trip away to help me prepare for next year’s contest season. Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? I’m simply going to follow where the wave takes me. Surfng is my life and I really enjoy what I’m doing so I hope I can qualify for the CT eventually but I’ll be happy as long as I’m surfng.

Harry Timson is arguably not only Britain's best Pro Junior surfer but he is also one of the UK's up and coming surfers who is most likely to go the whole distance and make his mark globally in the surfng world. Quite a big call you may be thinking. Well, let's look at the facts. He's been a British Champion at all levels more times than any of his peers so his contest crudentials seriously hold water! But more importantly than that is the surfng experience he has already gained as a Junior surfer, spending most of his year training in the best waves on our planet. Back in Issue 15, we saw how Harry spent his winter training in 'Sumbawan Surfection'. So now it is time to fnd out more about how he spends his summer when Harry goes to Hossegor!

As part of the Volcom European team, Harry joins an elite group of Pro Junior surfers who spend their summer living in the Seignosse suburb of Hossegor with the infamous break of La Graviere just across the sand dune from the Volcom house. Amongst his team companions is top French Pro Junior surfer Willy Aliotti from Saint Martin in the Caribbean. A couple years older than Harry, the two have grown to be great friends over the years and it's easy to see how they have both pushed each other's surfng to new heights.

surphangaway Another member of the Volcom family is Leon Glatzer from Costa Rica who surfs on the German Junior Team and upon his arrival in France, he soon added to the hive of talent in the one storey house in Hossegor. Harry, Willy and Leon now had a few weeks to get used to the power of the French breaks again before being joined by the French and Spanish team riders. For from then on it would be down to the real business of contest training.

SM Harry Timson quickly takes to the waves at Lacanau... Photo: Stu Gaston
surphangaway The Pro Junior contest season in Europe ran from July to September this year with six events in total and roughly two each month. This becomes a really intense period with each contest running over a four day period meaning there can sometimes be just days between events. With events being held all over Europe, just travelling between event sites can take up to a day or two, leaving little time to train and more importantly adjust to the different conditions each break set up holds. So here we see Harry grabbing a moment to get used to the less than ideal waves on offer at the fourth contest held in Lacanau where peaky conditions meant getting a good punt section could be a heat changer.
SM - 48

SM ‌ and before you know it, he's busting out backhand airs all over the place! Photo: Stu Gaston
surphangaway Despite the waves being far from brilliant, Harry bust out some big moves during this warm up session when the low tide banks offered him some really fun air sections. Of course, the endless momentum of both the sea and contest rounds meant that he wasn't so lucky when it came to his heats but you win some and you lose some and that's what stands Harry apart from many of his peers – whether he wins or not, he's still having fun and he never lets a contest get him down!

After a gruelling few months of contests, every surfer has at least one thing to look forward to – the autumn swells that make up the best part of a year's surfng. What frst got you into surfng? My dad pushed me into a 1 foot wave when I was 3 years old. And that was just the start of my strong addiction for surfng! And how big a part does surfng play in your life? I try to surf every day but with school and homework it's not so easy, especially in winter with the night falling quickly. I go surfng every time it's possible, even if the waves are crappy! What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I prefer free surfng because you can really enjoy the feeling with the wave, and don't have to be too focused. But I think it's good to combine these two different sides of surfng because it helps you keep improving. When and how did you become sponsored? For the moment I'm not sponsored but I would love to work with a big brand!
SM - 118
Moulia's Mindset
What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? For me it's when I surfed the iconic wave in Hossegor which is "La Nord" for the frst time. I was all by myself: no friends in the water, only big guys with big boards and I was riding my one and only board, a 5'8. At that time, I managed to get the biggest wave of my life! I was just 13 years old! Who in surfng inspires you most? I would say that it's Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater!

Unfortunately, it was out of my heat so it didn't help my results! What's the worst wipeout of your life? My worst wipeout was at La Gravière. It was like 6 foot at sunset and I took the wave set, fell over and afterwards I took like fve waves on my head while the sun set in the sea! What song motivates you before a surf? Eye of the Tiger! Do you train as well as surf? My training is running on the beach straight to the spot, and paddling straight to the peak!

Moulia's Mindset
What do you do when you don't surf? I see friends and go skating or skiing in winter! If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? I would buy a big boat whit a lot of friends (girls included!) to travel around the world and surf secret spots! What's the healthiest thing you ate today? A big cheesecake with a hot chocolate! No i'm kidding I think it's a fruit salad. What's your most overused word? I think it's "girl"!

SM Matt grabs a last minute air opportunity.
surphalosophy So why surfng? Why not any other sport? My dad got me doing this sport in the frst place and thanks to him, for me it's the best sport in the world! This is the best sport to practice down here too! And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? I love skiing! I could have been a very good skier too because my dad was also a ski instructor but my choice was already made, it was surfng and nothing else! What's your goal for the next year? I would like to pass my exams and try to do some Pro Juniors! And what about the future? For the moment I don't have any plans, but I would love to become an actor, or a flm director!

SM Nat Young grabs some air time!
The Goss
Once again, three events later and he was back in a second place fnish at the second event of the European leg of the World Tour events, Supertubes in Portugl.
And with that result added to his array of previous successful scores, Nat secured himself the coveted title of 2013 ASP 'Rookie of the Year'. But rest assured, Nat will be back on Tour in 2014 and though he'll no longer be just another rookie, he'll no doubt have his sights set on the much bigger title!
