Still that doesn't stop you setting off again when you're ready for it! And so after our very own epic two year trip with SURPHANG Magazine, we're heading home, back to the home of surfing – Hawaii! Clay Marzo is destined to always be the surfng world's greatest enigma. Arguably one of the most talented surfers ever to live, Clay is also one of the most elusive, rarely seen on the competition circuit and since he lost the backing of his main sponsor, Quiksilver, last year, fnding it all the more difcult to keep his profle above the surface. That said, the second six months of last year saw the man himself resurface with fans treated to rare new footage of the enigmatic surfer. So when our man in Hawaii, Damian Antioco of DoomaPhotos, recently sent us some epic shots of Clay, we knew it was time to turn the spotlight, just for a moment, on 'Amazin' Marzo!'

Clay lives and breathes surfng – this much was certain from an early age, frst being on his dad's board from the age of 2, even before he could walk! Growing older, he would mimic the surf moves of his brother Cheyne Magnusson, amazing everyone in how adept he became at this right down to the same style and hand movements, even though Cheyne is regular, Clay goofy. Of course with such natural talent, going into competition seemed the obvious path for the young Clay Marzo.

Clay did indeed have early success on the competitive circuit. At 11 he came third in the NSSA Nationals which earnt him his frst big sponsorship deal with Quiksilver. Then at 15, he made NSSA history, becoming the frst surfer to receive two perfect 10s and go on to win the Open Men's National Title. But these achievements were all the more amazing because of their rarity. Clay would often paddle out into the line up for a heat and just freeze, unable to surf on demand. He wanted to surf for the sheer stoke of it not because he had to win some contrived format, scoring points for specifc moves, not to mention the paddle battles to even get a wave! All of this was completely beyond Clay's own understanding of surfng.

Clay's unconventional behaviour, his intense focus on surfng and his incongruity with the ways of surf competiton meant he really began to stand out from the crowd, that he was in some way 'different'. He was told to 'see what's up' – after many tests he was found to have Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. For anyone who knows anything about autism, knowing is a relief but it doesn't solve anything. But what it did do for Clay was explain why he couldn't get his head round competing – he lives in the moment, enjoys the moment and wants to live to the full with no other agenda. If he sees someoneelse get a sick barrel, he wants to too, simple.

And so Clay Marzo has become the true soul surfer, true to himself, true to his condition and true to his surfng. He lets himself and his surfng be what they ought to be and in so doing will be one of the most talented surfers of all time. We will most likely never see him take on the Tour, or surf a heat against Kelly Slater (although he did win the 3-star Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido in Mexico back in 2009), but we don't need to. Kelly himself once said of Clay, “one of the best surfers in the world� and that's all we need to know!

Any self respecting surfer of the twenty first century will want to travel to and surf the North Shore of Hawaii at some point of their surfing life – it's like the Mecca of the religion of surf, the celestial home of surfing. But why? We've not been ourselves, though it is on our bucket list, but before we dig deep in our pockets to fund such a trip, we thought it would be worth kowing what makes Hawaii so special...

First then, why is Hawaii considered the home of surfing? Well the earliest written account of surfing, or “hee nalu” in Hawaiian, was by Lieutenant James King in 1779 just months after Captain Cook’s death. He described Native Hawaiians riding a wood plank on the swells of Kealakekua Bay on Hawaii Island. Even he could see how much fun the sport was writing, “… they seem to feel a great pleasure in the motion that this exercise gives.” Surfing is indeed believed to have originated long ago in ancient Polynesia, later thriving in Hawaii. It was once a sport only reserved for 'alii' ( the Hawaiian royalty), which is why surfing is often called the “sport of kings.”

Ok so far so good, but what makes the waves in Hawaii more special than any other surfing spot in the world? Well apparently the famous surf in Hawaii occurs due to various favorable environmental conditions, from the geographic position in the middle of the Pacific Ocean just on the fair weather side of the main storm track, to the ideal seabed shape for making the perfect peak, to the wave grooming, consistent offshore trade winds, to the small tidal ranges.

Hot Spots Now that's all well and good, but how does that all relate to the reality of these huge hollow waves hitting Hawaii? So keeping things simple, waves are created by little more than wind acting on water. When large gale force storms churn in the middle of the ocean, they consequently send waves emanating out from their center in the direction in which they are moving. Of course, the stronger the winds are, the larger the waves will be. Furthermore, the slower moving the storm is, the longer the period of surf will last and the more consistent the waves will be. This is what is known as the “fetch” of the storm, with a “captured fetch” meaning that the storm essentially stalled in one place and kept pulsing out energy from a consistent location. With a slow moving storm the resulting swell could last for a couple of days, whereas with a storm that races quickly across the ocean the resulting swell could last no longer than a couple of hours.

In both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, the largest and fiercest storms generally take place during the winter months. During the winter months in Hawaii, hurricane strength storms churn in the North Pacific off the eastern coast of Japan and south of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. Packing hurricane force winds, these storms send out pulses of energy that travel as waves across the Pacific until they run into some distant shore.

Now these waves have about 3,000 miles of open ocean to travel with nothing to slow them down and Hawaii is the very first landmass that they hit.

Consequently, the waves hit Hawaii with huge force and can create times when surf can exceed 30, 40, or even 60 feet at the more exposed locations.

Hot Spots Seeing as the waves are generated to the north of the islands, these exposed locations are found on the north and west facing shores, hence the infamous North Shore (clues in the name and all that)! So there you go that's why the waves on Hawaii are huge and hollow!

What frst got you into surfng? Mainly my friends got me into surfng. They pushed me a lot and I think they are the main reason I surf today. When did you become sponsored? I got sponsored by Quiksilver when I was 10 years old. What do you prefer then, free surfng or competitions and why? I prefer free surfng over surfng competitively. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? I think my second place fnish in the Nationals was the most proud moment of my surfng career so far Who in surfng inspires you most? When and where was your best surf session? Two winters ago out at Windmills. What's the worst wipeout of your life? I got my leash wrapped around me for a while, when I came up everything was white and I couldn't hear anything. Do you train as well as surf? Yeah, I train a lot of Jiu-Jitsu and I do some cross-ft here and there. I also like to do a lot of rock running and diving. What's the healthiest thing you ate today? Acai bowl from Jamba Juice What do you do when you don't surf? When the waves are flat I usually go out on my boat and fsh or dive. I also like to ride dirt bike when I get a chance. What's your goal for the next year? My goals for next year are doing as many ASP Pro Junior competitions as I can and hopefully go on some trips and get some footage.

What frst got you into surfng? My dad started surfng when he was pretty young so he got me into the water and I just gradually became more interested in surfng when I was older. When and how did you become sponsored? I was around 12 and a local company ended up picking me up and supporting me for a few years. What do you prefer then, free surfng or competitions and why? Free surfng, you're never gonna be able to beat getting perfect waves with your friends and travelling. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? All my edits, I love to edit so after putting hours into it, it feels good to watch them after. Who in surfng inspires you most? Mason Ho and Ozzie Wright for being creative and always having the most fun while in the water.

Hot Shots When and where was your best surf session? Indo at Ulus is always hard to beat especially when Racetracks lights up, it's the sickest wave ever. What's the worst wipeout of your life? One time my leash got caught on the reef when I was 12 and a 3 wave set came through and I couldn't get my leash off the reef. At the last second, it popped off and the last wave landed on my head and I got pretty worked. Do you train as well as surf? I go to the gym and do yoga as well to keep ft.
What do you do when you don't surf? I edit my videos, play some basketball, or just go on trips across the island with my friends. What's your goal for the next year? I'm doing a few WQS comps so hopefully I do good in those and build up a bit of a speed. Also flm as much as possible and nail a few clips. And what about the future? In the future I would like to get into a few major movie parts or even make my own movie at one point. And of course the WCT is a dream.

Hot Shots What frst got you into surfng? My dad took me out on his longboard. We caught a small wave and we both stood up. I wanted to go and catch another one right after that. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? Well I haven’t had a huge win yet, but I got equal ninth at the ISA World Juniors in Nicaragua last year. Also placed 4th in the Open Juniors at State Nationals 2012 Huntington. Oh yeah, and I got 2nd in the USA Championships in 2011. Who in surfng inspires you most? John John Florence is the man because I love his crazy airs and unbelievable barrel riding. I also really like watching Dane Reynolds surf because he is always looking to do something super progressive.

Hot Shots When and where were your best surf trips? Bali, Japan, Tahiti and Nicaragua. All great experiences and really awesome trips. I love being able to surf new and exotic places. It’s good to get away from home once in a while and see what the rest of the world is doing, I enjoy it a lot. Do you train as well as surf? Not really. Surfng as much as I can is my normal training. I guess I do a bit of swimming and running in my school’s physical education program at Kamehameha Schools Maui campus. But other than that, just surf as much as I can. What do you do when you don't surf? Skateboarding What's your goal for the future? Competing and trying to make it to the pro circuit. I’ll probably be doing WQS events until I reach my ultimate goal of qualifying for the prestigious World Championship Tour.

Josh Burke just fnished 17th at the ASP North Shore Surf Shop Pro Junior. Not bad for the 16 year old grom from Barbados especially when organisers were saying that the contest saw the biggest waves ever surfed in a Pro Junior contest! So when Josh's dad Alan sent us over a sick sequence of Josh from Off The Wall, we thought this would be the perfect chance to get inside what Josh was actually thinking as he set himself up for the epic blue room moment you see above – joy riding with Josh!

“It's really hard to get a good wave on the North Shore when it's crowded (which is always) so you have to paddle with determination right from the start, calling for the wave that you are going for. So that's just what I did when I was paddling to get this one! When I was dropping in, I was going to pull in from the start but it crumbled and didn't open up, so I delayed by going all the way down. You just get so into it and all the surfers out there push themselves to take and pull into the biggest waves just because they know they're going to get a sick shot!

surphography When and how did you become interested in shooting surfng? I used to live in Washington for 13 years and always loved watching surfng every time I came down to California. I'd also seen Clark Litle’s Photos, so when we fnally moved down here, it was just something I had to do. I’d never been so atracted to something I’d never done to be honest!

surphography You spent some time in Hawaii recently so tell us more about the experience you gained there as a photographer? Hawaii is amazing! The water is so blue and just feels like there is so many places to shoot. It really just inspired me to keep on going and looking for new perspectives.

When and where would you say you've snapped your best shots so far? I think probably at Salt Creek which is about 2 miles from my house. I remember one day I got up at 6am and went down there and waited for the sunrise. It was freeing cold like low 40’s which is cold for California. Finally the sun was just coming up over the Ritz Carlton and the waves where so glassy and perfect. It’s a time when there was only a couple people out and I could stand in one spot and just wait for the waves to come to me. It wasn’t the biggest waves that day but defnitely some of my favourites.

surphography And what about the future? Where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? I don’t really know. God has a plan for me so he’s in control. I would like to be living in Hawaii probably out taking of pictures of John John at Backdoor but whereever I am I'm sure I'll be happy.

Issue Fifteen saw SURPHANG'S frst guest photographer cover with Harry Timson scoring it again thanks to dad, Vince Timson sending in an epic set of shots from their Sumbawan surf trip. Maintaining a family focus, Noah Gonzalez was our featured champ with mum Christiane Hartl also submiiting an awesome collection of shots from their surfs at some southern secret spots.

Noa Deane nailed the cover of Issue Sixteen with this shot from D'bah during our awesome trip to Australia. There we also hooked up with champ Quinn Bruce and a whole load of other talented surfers including Nic Doran, Alex Hayes and Josh Harrison. Once back, a quick shoot with Josh Braddock kept us up-to-date with Team GB's training for the Junior Surfng Games in Nicaragua.

Current ASP Europe Pro Junior Champion Leo Fioravanti earnt the cover of Issue Twenty Two for his efforts thanks to a great barrel shot from Jean-Marc Amoyal. Inside saw a feature on two of Hossegor's top up coming surfers, Arthur Lassee and Thomas Delplace, plus an interview with Italian surfer Robbie D'Amico. All this plus a look at Will Bailey's trip to compete in the RipCurl European Gromsearch fnal at Capbreton – a real Euro fest!

Not though put on the shelf once read only to be forgotten as happens to so many 'real' magazines but living on the virtual online bookshelf alongisde its twenty four SURPHANG predecessors, always waiting to be looked at and loved again and again!
