'Supporting Upcoming Rider Potential Here And Now Globally' Third time lucky? As we enter our third year of producing SURPHANG Magazine, we share the opinion of a world renowned surfer – who's been in the business for almost as many years as we've had issues – that there is no such thing as luck! Luck is more accurately considered as where preparation meets opportunity. We found this most apt after our recent two and a half day trip across to mainland Europe – the trip preparation coupled with the opportunity to shoot with one of the countries top pro junior surfers led to bagging some perfect shots! So after two years of preparation, our magazine has now reached the point where we can fully realise the opportunity to fulfill our initial vision – to Support Upcoming Rider Potential Here And Now Globally! And where better place to start than the surf rich country of South Africa full of upcoming riders that are often overshadowed by their 'brus' from the big two – Australia and America. So join us now on our continuing journey of support as we head south to see what talent and opportunity is waiting around each cape!

The Pro Show

Dylan Lightfoot had a pretty awesome time last year. Having been South African Pro Junior Champion, he took the step into the Mens events, came up trumps in the trials of a local Prime event and soared up the rankings. Not bad for the junior surfer from J Bay! And of course, now his goal is to get on tour... nothing new there then! The only difference is that Dylan has beaten one of last year's rookies in a high profle international contest once before – so Dylan means business. We met up with him to talk more about his top Pro dreams.

Best Lightfoot Forward!

What frst got you into surfng? My father was a surfer and he encouraged me to surf. When and how did you become sponsored? After I won my frst event in the Billabong Junior series in St Mikes when I was 11, I approached Fox as I was a Motocross fanatic and a real fan of the brand. Who in surfng inspires you most? Kelly Slater, the guy is a machine! What do you prefer then, free surfng or competitions and why? I enjoy hunting down swells and getting cooking waves with my mates but I have a competitive fre that always wants to achieve – if you're winning there is no better feeling!

The Pro Show Now you've had some great moments in your surfng career so far like winning the International RipCurl Gromsearch two years ago when you took out Filipe Toledo in the fnal and then last year winning two titles back home in the Billabong Junior series in Durban. So tell us more about how those experiences came about frst? At the age of 16 I went to Brazil to surf in the ASP World Juniors, I lost in my frst heat. All bummed out and still recovering from Dengue fever I caught in Bali the previous trip, I asked my dad if we could go home immediately and surf in the last Ripcurl junior series event which would be the decider to who will receive the trip to Bells Beach. I jumped on the next flight home and made my way up to the event in Mossel Bay. I got on a roll and came out with the win which gave me the opportunity to receive the trip to Bells Beach and surf in the Ripcurl Gromsearch fnal. My prize from that event was the entry into the Padang comp which was a stunning experience- so from a low in my career from Dengue fever to ending at Padang was an unbelievable high! Winning the two divisions in the Billabong Junior series was awesome, I had a magic Spider surfboard under my feet. The conditions were tricky but I locked into a bomb in each heat which made the difference. As well as the Pro Juniors, you've made a convincing move into the Star and Prime events this past year with a soar up the Mens ratings following your chance to surf at the Mr Price Pro Ballito. What lead to that then and what was it like? It was my goal the whole of last year to get into the Mr Price Pro Ballito, I knew that there were trials but it wasn’t an easy task as there is so much local talent edging for those 2 spots. When I got into the main event it felt like I had done all the hard work in the trials and all the pressure was on the other competitors who had to face a wildcard. To make a couple rounds and to gain a huge jump in the QS Rankings was an amazing feeling. It became quite a shock to me that now I was on the QS and I needed to enter in the last remaining QS events to keep my points up.

SM - 14

Best Lightfoot Forward! You then chose to run further with this opportunity and do all the events in Europe over the summer. Talk us through how those contests went for you? It was great! Got to see France and Spain's beaches in peak summer season, and made a couple rounds in the events. Now that the experience is there I would defnitely like to do well at those events this year. So I imagine you have to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders. How do you rate your surfng peers in the surfng world at the moment then? The guys that I contend with are always pushing the level of surfng, you learn so much from them just by being at QS events and that helps to push the boundaries in your own surfng.

The Pro Show Still what it's like knowing you've won against surfers like Filipe Toledo who are now on Tour? Does that spur you on to go for it even more? He is an incredible surfer so to beat him in the Ripcurl Gromserch at Bells beach gave me a lot of confdence to follow my dream to where he is on the World Tour. And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? My other passion is keeping ft and staying healthy. I have a personal trainer who trains me twice a week and when the waves are flat I hit a cycle up in the mountains behind J Bay.

SM - 18

Best Lightfoot Forward!

So you're from South Africa and have surfed some epic breaks over there like J Bay. How do those classic spots compare to others you've surfed around the world? I always feel when I get back home to J Bay that there is no place like Supers! But I have been to some incredible waves like Raglands in New Zealand and Padang Padang in Bali that come very close to the adrenalin rush I get at Supers.

Best Lightfoot Forward!

So when and where has your best surf session been then? My best session would have to be in Bali at the Padang Padang cup. I had a heat against the best barrel riders in the world, Lee Wilson, Ry Craike and Peppen Hendrik. I locked into a bomb and pulled into this death slab, my back foot slipped off the back of the board in the barrel and I was sitting on my bum in the tube, I managed to put my foot back on my grip pad some how and squeezed out the doggy door. And what's the worst wipeout of your life so far? I floated on a 5 foot wave at Nahoon reef in East London and came off the lip and landed with my back foot slipping off the board and tearing the inside ligaments on my front legs knee.

21 -

The Pro Show You've obviously travelled to and surfed some amazing spots around the world! So where's left? Where do you still want to travel to and surf? Namibia is next on the cards, I am yet to score that sand bottom point cooking! That would be a dream come true! What do you do when you don't surf? Cycle, train, read or watch suites the series. Now what's your goal for the this year? My goal would be to be able to qualify for the prime events for 2015 and to surf as many local events as possible. And fnally what about the future? World title, that would be the ultimate goal!

CHAMP CHATS

What do you prefer then, free surfng or competitions and why? Competitions but I enjoy both because I enjoy surfng with or without a rash vest! Now the past few years have seen you performing consistently well at all levels, having been a South African Junior Champion and winning various age categories in other contests over the past few years. So talk us through those contests and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your titles. Ya when I was young I won most of the events but other good surfers started coming up and now I have some really good competition! I had a bit of a low when I was 14 but now I've started to win most of the events again and have come out on top every year so I havent really done bad in competitions!

SM - 28

Jordy Junior!

29 -

SM Jordy Maree is definitely moving up in the world! Photo: John Wilkinson

CHAMP CHATS I imagine you have to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders. How do you rate your surfng peers in South Africa at the moment then? To be honest, I just surf and don't really think too much about other surfers. You've been surfng against these guys most of your competitive life. There must be different levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this affect the way you surf in a heat? In a heat I dont really mind who is in my heat , I just surf and the ranking doesn't matter much to me. So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? I don't mind who I draw in my heat but I do worry in fnals a bit if I get the top seeds because I want to win and they're hard to beat every time!

CHAMP CHATS

Now you've had various wins and been a National Champion, so what goes down as your best victory to date? Well fnishing 10th in the ISA World Junior Games has to be one of my best results! And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? I have a coach and a physio to keep me ft and up to date. So you're from South Africa and have no doubt surfed some epic breaks over there. How do those classic spots compare to others you've surfed around the world? Ya we have really good waves, really consistent waves but they spread all around Africa and the water temperature's very different from one place to another!

CHAMP CHATS So when and where has your best surf session been then? Skeleton Bay in Namibia back last year, such long barrels! And what's the worst wipeout of your life so far? Again at Skeleton Bay, my third wave, I caught a big set and the wave closed out on me in the barrel and I got concussed, that wasn't so nice.

CHAMP CHATS You've obviously travelled to and surfed some amazing spots around the world! So where's left? Where do you still want to travel to and surf? In Indo, I want to fnd new spots and get super barrelled! What do you do when you don't surf? I normally train or see friends.

Now what's your goal for the this year? My goal is to win the World Junior Surfng Games this year. And fnally where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? On the tour or surfng on a island I own hahah but getting super barreled hopefully!

Surf coaching has come in for a lot of stick recently with some journalists questioning whether it's taking away the whole point of the sport – to have fun! But for those who take their dreams of being on the tour seriously, then coaching has become a way of life. So we talk to world renowned surfer, Llewellyn Whittaker about his approach to surf coaching following his recent work with a group of South African groms, the Cape Crusaders!

You've been involved yourself in contest surfing since you were 12 years old. So first of all, how did it all start? What got the young Lu Whittaker into surfing? When I moved to Mossel Bay, the family and I went to Santos Beach where I started to paddelski, then it progressed to a boogie board and then for my tenth birthday I bought my first board and started surfing. After about two years, I progressed from De Bakke Beach to the Point. A few older locals like Mike Sheppard and Craig Thackery took me to my first Southern Cape Trial. Basically from there it just snow balled.

Since then what have been the highlights of your own competitive career so far? Well it’s been a 24 year long career since my first U12 South African champs. My highlights would be winning the Quiksilver Good Wave, Traveling on the WQS going to awesome places and meeting fantastic people. Other highlights would be winning SA seniors in 2009 & 2013, also competing with my hero, Occy in J-bay at the Billabong Open of Surfing. Winning the UK triple in 2007 and finishing runner up on the British Pro Tour. The main highlight would be making the South African team in 2011 and being selected as the captain of the team.

At what point then did you make the move into coaching other surfers? Near the end of my international carreer when I was based in the UK, I started competing locally in Europe and the UK. To make some extra money I did a coaching course and started running surf schools in and around Newquay. This progressed into coaching the up and coming UK junior surfers and coaching the British team. At this stage of my life, I realised I could be doing this at home in South Africa so in 2008, I moved back to my beloved South Africa and started WSS, Waves S'cool' of Surfing.

So what's your approach to coaching? How do you get the best out of the young surfers you work with? It's about friendship and trust. You get to know the kids personally and inside out. This bond helps them believe in themselves because you believe in them. My moto/mantra for the kids is FTB, Focus, Trust, Believe in yourself and your goals. I also believe that God has blessed me with a talent that I am able to bring out the best in these kids.

And what does a typical Lu Whittaker coaching session involve? SURF SURF SURF SURF SURF! Time in the water is very important! A typical weekend camp will be a surf in the morning 3-4hours where the kids come in every so often for feedback. After that we do video analysis and then head back to the beach for another 2-3 hours surfing.

There are a lot of surf coaches around nowadays but you obviously bring a huge wealth of experience to the role. What would you say is the most valuable advice you offer any upcoming surfer you coach? FTB Focus, Trust and Believe. Set your goals and work hard. Nothing comes easy. You get what you put in. There is no such thing as luck... luck is where preparation meets opportunity.

surphangaway Now you're working with a good number of upcoming surfers in South Africa at the moment such as the Western Cape crew, Adin, Tristan, Donovan, Eli and the Elkington brothers. How did they perform on their recent training week? What were their highlights and what did you give them to take away to work on? Each kid is developing at a different rate and is at a different stage of his life and his surfing ability. The coaching foundation stays pretty much the same with me though my coaching is always evolving as I work with the kids. So for each kid there are some similarities however I like to coach on specific areas for each individual surfer.

surphangaway Adin Masencamp and Jake Elkington have both just been selected for the South African and British junior surfing squads respectively, preparing for the World Junior Surfing Games in Ecuador during April. Do you get some kind of a 'fatherly' pride watching the young surfers you've coached have successes like that? I am so proud of every single kid I coach whether they achieve big goals or even small surfing or personal goals. It’s amazing watching these kids go through the ranks, I started with these two boys when they were about 9 and their dream was always to be a National team member and now their dreams have come true. Very proud!

surphangaway So over all the years you've been coaching, have there been any stand outs, any surfers you've thought will go far in surfing? Tough question! I believe every single one of my top students have the ability to achieve their dreams and aspirations. I was never a stand out as a grom but I went all out and made it happen. You have to have the full package – good attitude, surf red hot and be hungry for it! That’s a rare combination to have but it's definitely achievable! Finally then, what's your ultimate goal as a surfing coach? To improve the depth of Junior surfing in South Africa!

Alex van Rijswijck

Age: 15 Nickname: Grape (what’s round and purple and conquered the world? - Alexander the Grape) Years surfng: Almost 3 years to the day Where you live: Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa Sponsors: Billabong, VonZipper, Dakine, Kustom, Kinetek Racing Fins, The Boardroom-Dennis Ellis Local break/s: Pipe in Port Elizabeth Favourite surfer? Andy Irons and Dane Reynolds Favourite place to surf? Jeffreys Bay and Victoria Bay Favourite surf movie? Trilogy Favourite surf trick? Anything from a variale to a dead cockroach. And any lip that I can annihilate. Favourite board? Anything Dennis Ellis makes me. My current favourite is a 5’2” x 17” x 2” round pin.

Hot Shots

SM - 64

Alex van Rijswijck What frst got you into surfng? During a holiday in Port Elizabeth with my dad in September 2010 I spotted his old wooden longboard (12’) and thought it needed an airing. I got onto the board and was hooked almost immediately. It felt like I really needed to do more of this and the rest is history. When and how did you become sponsored? Billabong approached me at the SA Final Trails in Cape St Francis in March 2013.

65 -

SM Alex van Rijswijck's surfing pointing in the right direction! Photo: Willem van Rijswijck

Hot Shots What do you prefer then, free surfng or competitions and why? I really love both. With free surfng I get to express myself and surf with my local buddies and my bro (Pete and Jono Coffey and Paul). In competitions I get to measure myself against the best. I have at some point beaten all South African surfers in my age category so I know I can surf well but I need to work on consistency. Considering how long I have surfed I know it will come to me.

What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? Getting sponsored by Billabong was the biggie for me. Other highlights include winning the SA Grom U14 Title as I had only been surfng for just over a year at that time. And then, getting a 9.4 and an 8.3 in a provincial trial last year. Lastly, winning the Junior Title (U20) at the greatest surf club in the world – CYOH in Port Elizabeth. Only winners of divisions get a tie. I am now the proud owner of such a CYOH tie. I will always treasure this tie!

SM - 66

Alex van Rijswijck Who in surfng inspires you most? My friends and brother push me really hard and encourage me all the time. I have to thank these guys and my dad (always on the sidelines) for pushing me and encouraging me all the way. When and where was your best surf session? After a disappointing second place at the SA Longboard Champs in Cape Town in 2013, we stopped for a freesurf at Victoria Bay and I killed it! Felt much better afterwards. What's the worst wipeout of your life? Bashing my head open during a freesurf before school. Got eight stitches and a very bloody towel as battle trophees. And my longest hold-down was at Supertubes in J-Bay. That was scary!

67 -

SM Alex van Rijswijck ripping up the lip again! Photo: Willem van Rijswijck

Hot Shots Do you train as well as surf? Yes I once did a yoga move my mom taught me and pulled a serious string somewhere and gave it up for good. Otherwise I do the odd packing of the dishwasher but seriously, yes I do work-out with my coach, Shannon Ainslee and at home I do small workouts and spent time on the Pilates ball. And of course I sometimes break out into a sweat running to catch the next wave.

SM - 68

Alex van Rijswijck What's the healthiest thing you ate today? Pancakes lathered with butter and syrop. What do you do when you don't surf? My dad has three rules. Either you surf, you study or you belong to him to do some housework. Guess where you see me most?

69 -

SM Alex van Rijswijck flicks his tail up! Photo: Willem van Rijswijck

Hot Shots What's your goal for the next year? Have way more fun, make the SA Team (a tough ask) and keep posting excellent academic results.

And what about the future? Every young surfer’s dream is to be a Pro Surfer and I am no different but I realise that this will be incredibly difcult. I would really like to be a marine biologist one day and will work my way toward that in any event. I just love the ocean and all the beasts inside it. When not surfng, my mates and I love snorkelling here in the bay, ogling the marine life. I have also been so lucky to have dolphins dropping in on me and swimming with me at the Wild Side here in Port Elizabeth. So sick.

Hot Shots What frst got you into surfng? My family used to come to Port Elizabeth for holidays, and I saw this board in the backyard, so was keen to try it. Then we just hired a board, and went for a surf. From there it just kind of snow-balled, and I wanted to surf more and more. When and how did you become sponsored? It was round about 2013, when I took part in the Hurley SA Junior Champs.

SM - 78

Paul van Rijswijck What do you prefer then, free surfng or competitions and why? Defnitely free surfng, I believe that while free surfng I get to express myself more, and do what I love, which is doing and trying radical manoeuvres, whether I land them or not. I am always incredibly stoked when I do them, even if they don’t go as planned. haha. I feel restricted by competitions. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? Hot Shots When and where was your best surf session? Recently at my local break Pipe. What's the worst wipeout of your life? Surfng a beach break at the wild side of Port Elizabeth. I paddled for an incredibly hollow 4-5 footer going left, and got stuck at the top. I ended up freefalling with the lip, and got completely smashed.

SM - 82

Paul van Rijswijck Do you train as well as surf? I do go for the odd jog, and have surf ftness sessions every now and then, but not that often. What's the healthiest thing you ate today? A healthy smoothie that I make myself every morning. What do you do when you don't surf? I skateboard, chill with friends, and obviously do my school work which is equally important. What's your goal for the next year? To maybe get a proper sponsorship, and improve my surfng. And what about the future? I hope that in the future I can become a sponsored free surfer. That`s my dream.

What frst got you into surfng? I used to bodyboard until I was about 9 or 10 when I saw my brother having more fun on a surfboard, so I asked to get a board for my 10th birthday. Pretty much just gone on from there. When and how did you become sponsored? Quiksilver was my frst sponsor at the age of 11, 2008. Greg Swart a local South African legend was working for Quik at the time and my parents approached him for a few clothes and a wetsuit where it turned out to be much more and it has kind of grown from there I guess

What do you prefer then, free surfng or competitions and why? Everyone wishes they could be just free surfers and so do I but it's not all possible. You can't really do both as you never have time to travel for comps and free surf at the same time. I like comps in a way where you can earn exposure and meet way more new people. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? Winning the trip to France for the King of the Groms fnal as well as competing in the ISA World Juniors last year. Who in surfng inspires you most? John-John for sure!

When and where was your best surf session? Cola's/Cokes, Maldives. July, 2012 What's the worst wipeout of your life? About 3 months ago I went for a pop shovit and landed wrong where my cartilage tore and folded, the doctor called it a bucket-handle tear. What do you do when you don't surf? When I don't surf, I skate, eat or do my exercises.

91 -

Hot Shots What's your goal for the next year? My frst goal is to go to Hawaii during the end of the winter and get some tubes and get a few clips and fly over to California to do some of the NSSA comps around there but otherwise I'm just cruising and will hope to make the South African team to compete in the World Juniors again. And what about the future? My future goal is to make it on to the WCT and win a World Title sometime in my life, that's the ultimate goal. If that does not turn out well, I don't have an idea of what to do then haha

What got you into surfing? Nippers and lifesaving got me into surfing and seeing the pro surfers standing up on their boards and ripping it up. In my mind I wanted to be like them too. So every Sunday at nipper or lifesaving training, we would stand on our kneeboards or body boards and act like we were surfing and from there onwards I started surfing and I haven’t looked back ever since. I'm still loving it even now!!!!

SURPHOGRAPHY Alvin Mtatshi

When and where would you say you’ve snapped your best shot so far. Talk us through it. In the water at North beach, it was my first time ever swimming out with a gopro or shooting in the water. A friend of mine was helping me and showing me where to sit and how close to get if I wanted to get a good shot. The tide was going low so there was 1 or 2 little pits. As I was swimming up the line up, one of the super groms took of on this nugget of a wave and held this line straight for me. I just put the gopro forward and started snapping away as he was coming towards me. I wasn’t too sure if I had got the shot til I got out of the water and checked the pictures out on my laptop. I was so stoked when I did – I had scored my first really epic barrel shot with nothing more than a gopro!

Be sure to check it out and keep SURPHANG!
