'War at the Worlds...' It's that time of year when battle plans are being drawn up and onlookers are considering all the possible eventualities! For yes very soon another World Champion will be decided and it could well happen sooner than we think if Mr Medina here has anything to do with it – a win at the next WCT event in Peniche and he could clinch it. Meanwhile four others will be doing all they can to stand in his way, among whom is a certain John John Florence who has leapt up the rankings to become a recent contender. So not only does he adorn our cover this issue but we've also turned the spotlight on his recent flawless performances in California and France. And if that wasn't enough, the rest of the issue is full of upcoming surfers keen to follow in his footsteps!

John John Florence has really found his form at the business end of the World Championship Tour this year, putting himself in contention for the ASP World Champion title. Surfing like his doesn't come along all that often, so we had to take a much closer look at John John Florence's flawless pair of performances at the last two events.

Flawless Florence!
09 - SM John John Florence getting to work at Lowers! Photo: Catherine Gregory
The Pro Show It all began back in September at the Hurley Pro when John John surfed one of the most flawless heats in ASP history. His near-perfect two wave total of 19.73 eclipsed 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater and Adriano De Souza, and still stands as the highest two-wave heat total of the entire competition.

Flawless Florence!
11 - SM John John Florence flaring off his backhand! Photo: Catherine Gregory
The Pro Show In total, John John posted a record-setting five rides of more than nine points in the 30-minute heat, which he credited to the incredible overhead surf on offer at San Clemente's Lower Trestles. He sent the crowd into a frenzy, layering flair, torque and impossible rotation to every carve and aerial to put the level of his surfing beyond any question.

The Pro Show John John himself commented: "The waves are solid here this year and it's exhausting. I was pretty focused in that heat. I was fortunate enough to be on some really well-shaped waves that allowed me to open up and perform. I'm stoked on the heat and looking forward to a big finish tomorrow."

The Pro Show A win at Lowers wasn't to be for John John but that didn't dampen his spirits and he came back fighting in France! He eliminated 3 time world champ Mick Fanning in Round 5 with another near perfect heat total of 19.90 before besting Kolohe Andino in the Quarterfinals.

17 - SM John John Florence's flare for airs comes into its own! Photo: Thomas Deregnieaux
The Pro Show “The conditions today looked amazing but were all over the place out there,” Florence said. “I was lucky to find a rhythm in my first heat and seemed to be on all the good ones. Great waves, but you can feel the conditions changing with the onshore wind. My Quarterfinal against Kolohe was much harder to find scoring waves.”

The Pro Show That may have been the case but John John proved the event's form surfer from the outset, consistently notching up the highest scores of each round and surfing with unparalleled comfort and confidence in the ever-changing conditions. So it was little surprise that he went on to win the evnt over Jadson Andre, securing it with committed barrel rides as well as power surfing. This marked the second WCT victory of his career (the first being in Brazil in 2012).

The Pro Show “It has felt like such a long event and I'm so pumped to get the win in the end,” Florence said. “We've had every type of condition for this event and even finishing in barrels was a lot of work. There was a lot of water moving out there and Jadson was always going to be a tough opponent. He looked super strong against Jordy in the Semi.I'm pumped on the win here in France and the support from the crowd was really impressive.”Just as impressive has been John John's recent results (3rd in Tahiti, 2nd at Lowers and this win) which vaulted him into this current 5th position on the rankings and now places him in World Champion title contention alongside four others surfers – Kelly, Mick, Joel and Gabriel Medina.

The Pro Show “I'm really pumped with my results lately,” Florence said. “I had a few weird things happen for me at the start of the year and I've made some adjustments recently. I've spoken to a lot of guys about the title and they all say that the title campaign actually starts the year before. I'm hoping for a few more good results this season to really make a run for it in 2015. I guess my win puts me in contention for this year, but Gabriel is so far ahead that some weird stuff would have to happen.”

27 - SM Gearoid McDaid gearing up for another impressive contest performance! Photo: Rommel Gonzales
Gearoid McDaid may just be Ireland's next real hope of a World Tour surfer. Indeed as reigning Irish Mens Open and Junior Champion, he's certainly already got the career stats to back up the claim! So hot off his finals place finish at the European Junior Championships, we caught up for a chat with Gearoid as he was gearing up for his next run of contests.

Name: Gearoid McDaid Age: 17 Years surfing: 7 Where you live: Sligo, Ireland Sponsors: Quiksilver, Fourth Surfboards, Kovet, Argento, FCS Local break/s: Strandhill Favourite surfer? Julian Wilson Favourite place to surf? The Peak, Bundoran Favourite surf trick? Big carves Favourite board? Fourth 5'9 by 18 1/8 by 2 What first got you into surfing? My dad just started pushing me in on a bodyboard and once I got old enough, I started surfing and kept it up. When and how did you become sponsored? When I was about 13, I won the Quiksilver King of the Groms comp in Ireland and then the Quiksilver rep said he'd sponsor me.
SM - 30
Gearoid Gears Up!
31 - SM Gearoid McDaid's surfing is certainly pointing in the right direction! Photo: Stu Gaston
CHAMP CHATS Who in surfing inspires you most? Pretty much all the top guys in Ireland who charge those crazy slabs! What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I like to free surf obviously but I do also like doing comps because it makes you progress with your surfing all the time. Now the past few years have seen you performing consistently well at all levels with you becoming both Irish Mens Open Champion and Irish Junior Champion last year. So talk us through those contests and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your titles. Well over here the National Champion is crowned from three events. I won the first two which I was very happy with because the waves were really good for both events. I was clear leader coming into the last event then but due to lack of swell, it was called off so it went back to being the first two events so I won the open title. I was supper happy with it as I was the youngest person ever to win it!

CHAMP CHATS
You had to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders to take those wins. How do you rate your surfing peers over in Ireland at the moment? Yeh the guys over here all rip. There's always a group at every comp that you know you're gonna have to surf good to beat them. And they all charge too which makes them even better!
And you've also recently done really well in the European Junior Championships, having reached the final. Tell us more about how that competiton went then. Yeh it was a really fun comp. I was going over there with the goal of making the final so I was really happy I did. The waves for it were very challenging. It went from 6ft howling onshore to 4ft perfect offshore to 2ft onshore. This was good in a way because it meant you had to be able to adapt to the conditions which made it even more fun!

CHAMP CHATS So how does the standard of surfing compare when you surf in the European contests? Who are your main contenders across mainland Europe? Well when doing the Euro Pro Juniors, evryone at those comps rip so pretty much everyone at them are my main competitors in Europe! Now you've had various wins and championship titles, so what goes down as your best victory to date? My best victory would probly be the Quiksilver Seasessions Expression Session because it was a comp that is pretty much going out and going as big as you can which is so fun. It was also good because I beat some of the best aerialists in Europe which always feels good!

CHAMP CHATS
So now you're a champ then, what's next? What are your goals for the rest of this year? Well my year is kind of over for competitions because the Pro Junior tour is over so I'm just gonna surf as much as I can and train over the winter for next year's comps And what about training? How do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? I pretty much just surf as much as I can but when there's not waves I do a lot of swimming and strength exercises to keep fit

CHAMP CHATS So you're from Ireland, surfing some of the best spots over there on a daily basis. How do those classic spots compare to others you've surfed around the world then? Nowhere compares to Ireland! All the trips I've been on I've never seen anywhere that's better than Ireland for quality of waves! And where else around the world have you been lucky enough to surf so far? I've been all around Europe competing and then I've been to Ecuador, Nicaragua, Peru and Australia mostly for comps aswell So when and where has your best surf session been then? Outside of Ireland, it would have to be when I went to Nicaragua. There are so many sick beachies, just really fun and ripable! And what's the worst wipeout of your life so far? I've been pretty lucky and have never really had any bad wipeouts that standout

Yeh I've been to some great spots but I still really want to get to Indo and Hawaii which I hopefully will next winter after I finish school Finally, where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? Still surfing obviously and hopefully travelling alot and doing some of the WQS events too.
