Regarded by many as the best young surfer on the planet, 17 year old prodigy Jack Robinson has long been one to watch. Hailing from the West coast of Australia, Jack first garnered the interest of industry insiders at the age of eight, when he began competing against surfers twice his age‌ and coming out on top.

The Pro Show
When video footage of a 10 year-old Jack Robinson started making the rounds, people began to wonder, “Who is this little blonde kid, charging ledgy, heaving spots like North Point and The Box?” Jack was already threading barrels on waves that were two or three times his size and nailing air reverses even better than some of the guys on the world tour. By his 11th birthday, Robbo was surfing Pipeline in Hawaii. By this point in time, people began to recognize the kid with the blonde mop surfing the world's most famous and heavily localized wave. Of course it wasn't the first time a kid had been spotted out at legendary Pipeline, but the difference was Jack was spotted out there nearly every day, even when Pipe was hitting Second-Reef at eight-to-10 foot.

So it was no surprise that a year ago in Hawaii, just a couple weeks after celebrating his 16th birthday, Jack paddled out at fabled big-wave spot, Sunset Beach, into the biggest surf ever contested for a junior event and and surfed beyond his years to claim victory in challenging 12-15ft waves. Eleven-time World Champion Kelly Slater was among the guest commentary team and was not surprised that he won.

Soon after his Sunset Pro Junior success, Jack was picked up by industry giant, Billabong. Since founding the company back in 1973, Gordon Merchant has personally witnessed a handful of prodigious surfing talents emerge, fire and change the sport – once-in-a-generation type surfers like Martin Potter, Tom Curren, Occy, Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, and Dane Reynolds – surfers that possess a unique raw style and have a certain charisma that generates interest, whether they are winning or losing. He still sponsors one of them, Mark Occhilupo, to this day and he believes Jack has this special potential.

In the words of Billabong founder Gordon Merchant: “Jack is something very special; his surfing speaks for itself. His power, speed and instinctive timing combined with a style and self-confidence that are beyond his years – it's a very rare combination to find in a 17 yearold, but Jack has it all. We have always been dedicated to nurturing surfing's best talents. Jack fits in perfectly with this heritage.”

Jack Robinson has joined an illustrious group of Billabong surfers including dual ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson, perennial world title contender and all round performance freak Taj Burrow and dual world junior champion Jack Freestone. Of all his predecessors though, it is Taj Burrow's career that Jack Robinson is most likely to emulate; like Taj, he is a preeminent teen talent, reared in the challenging waves of remote southwest Australia, nurtured, coached and now ready to be unleashed upon the world's stage. Jack's forthcoming years are buoyed by high expectation and everyone will be keen to see what that kid with the blonde mop can deliver.

None more than Taj himself who has watched Robinson's rise from a young age: “I think Jack is such an incredible surfer and such a good kid. There's not a better 17 year old on the planet that can ride the tube like he can, he's as good as it gets. His style is solid too; he's like a young Andy Irons. He loves surfing so much. He's going to absolutely shine. I look forward to watching his surfing progress!

23 - SM Jack Robinson – one to watch! Photo: Oliver Emsallem
The Pro Show
Watching Jack's surfing progress is something the entire surfing industry will be doing over the next few years. He's not one of those groms who enters every contest going or appears in every vid – he's making long term judgements about what will really count towards the illustrious surfing career that he's keen to forge for himself. So we last saw him perform at the Pipe Invitational and before that at Teahupoo and that's probably the way it's going to be for now – a big wave event and Jack makes a big, memorable appearance. Then one day soon he will literally explode onto the scene and the surfing world will truly know who Jack Robinson is! And we look forward to that day!

Reef Heazlewood is another name from down under that you can expect to hear much more of in the very near future. He's recently put on a series of stellar performances over the course of the Surf Dive N Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles to become Under 16 Australian Champion. We caught up with the newly crowned champ for a quick chat.

CHAMP CHATS What first got you into surfing? Dad used to take me out when I was 3 on his shoulders and we would do tandem and it started back then. And I haven't stopped since. Who in surfing inspires you most? John John Florence, he has awesome airs, barrels and turns. He's just sooo good at everything.

31 - SM Reef Heazlewood whacks out his tail! Photo: Rubin Morris
CHAMP CHATS When and how did you become sponsored? When I was 8, I went to G-land and World Safaris made a video and I had a small part in it and the Billabong team manager saw it and then I was sponsored haha What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I froth on being competitive and so I want to become a competition surfer. Winning is a great feeling, and pushing yourself. But I never want to lose the fun in it which free surfing brings.
SM - 32
Reef on the Rise! Now the past couple of years have seen you performing well on the competitive circuit, though becoming the Under 16 Australian Junior Champion must have been the highlight. Talk us through the contest and the highs and lows that lead to you earning the title. During the event my main focus was to win the Aussie title and the school boys win was just really a bonus. My biggest low would have to be when I got an interference with another competitor in the tag team event and I lost several points for team Queensland. My highest point in the event was when I was paddling in from my final just winning and realising I was the U16 Australian Champion. You had to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. How do you rate your surfing peers from around Australia at the moment? You can never be certain of winning against them because they are fierce in the water and they are ripping. It's never over till it's over.

SM - 34
Reef on the Rise! So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? Kael Walsh, with his local knowledge, was going to be a super hard competitor to beat. And now, does being a national champion go down as your best victory to date? For sure, it was an unreal feeling winning the Australian title and it topped off a year where I've finaled in 11 out of 12 events and won 8 of them. Add to that the Duke Kahanamoku award for overall best male surfer at the Aussie titles and you could say I'm pretty happy!

CHAMP CHATS So now you're a champ then, what's next? What are your goals for the year to come? It can never stop, I want to win more haha! Stepping up into the Pro Juniors to get some experience will be a challenge at the same time still getting results at Grom events. I'll be working on getting a good clip together as well and doing some schoolwork along the way. And what about training? How do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? I do at least three fitness sessions a week. I like to maintain this because I know it keeps me focused and fit. I am really concentrating at the moment on inversion with my airs.
SM - 38
Reef on the Rise!
39 - SM Reef Heazlewood having fun! Photo: Rubin Morris
CHAMP CHATS Now you're already from Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast with some top quality waves right on your doorstep! So how would you rate your local spots? When they're on, they are 10/10. But even when they aren't, they are really fun! A couple of years back you headed to Hawaii and surfed Pipe, so how was that then? Yeah I went over for the first time when I was 12, there were some really big days at Pipe and third Reef was breaking and sitting in the lineup was crazy watching Kelly, John John and Jamie O'Brien own it. I got a wave at Backdoor that I was stoked I made the drop on. I got Sunset a really sick size this last year too.
SM - 40
Reef on the Rise!
41 - SM Reef Heazlewood hits out a serious spray fan! Photo: Rubin Morris
CHAMP CHATS When and where has your best surf session been then? Last year in August, I'd just gotten home from G-Land which was rad and one of our local breaks went off!!! It was firing and I just managed to sit in this sweet spot in spite of the rip and get so many sick barrels. But what's been the worst wipeout of your life? I was 10 years old and took a hammering in 8ft waves at Boulders in Samoa. I got held down and had to make a quick getaway to not get tossed onto the rocks.
SM - 42
Reef on the Rise!
43 - SM Reef Heazlewood seems to have it all in perfect balance! Photo: Rubin Morris
CHAMP CHATS So what about future plans for travelling? Where else do you want to head to and surf? From the Parko Grom Stomp comp last year, I was selected to do a magazine shoot. Other kids from the Billabong Grom series will be selected this year. They aren't sure where they will be taking us yet, but it could be a boat trip in Indo. For several years now the Mentawais has been high on my wish list. But, I've also just been looking at footage from Skeleton Bay, Namibia and it looks like goofy perfection! Finally, where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? I'm aiming high in the arena of competitive surfing and want to have qualified for the World Tour and be high in the ratings. My biggest dream is to win a World Title!!

surphalosophy When and how did you become sponsored? Got my first main sponsor about a year and a half ago by Globe when I sent them a video and asked if they wanted me to be a part of their team. What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I like both because free surfing you can do whatever you want but it's good to do competitive surfing because it really pushes your surfing.
SM - 50
Dand and Deliver! Now the past few years have seen you performing consistently well at all levels and last year you won the NSSA State High School Surfing Championships. So talk us through your contest season and the highs and lows that lead to your result. Yeah I had a pretty decent year last year, got some good results but I was stoked to end the year with winning that contest. I imagine you have to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. How do you rate your surfing peers in America at the moment then? Surfing right now is so competitive and there are so many amazing surfers in America. They really push you to surf the best you possibly can all the time.

SM - 52
Dand and Deliver! You've been surfing against these guys most of your competitive life. There must be different levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this affect the way you surf in a heat? I hate when I have super agro guys in my heats but I just try to avoid them and surf how I normally would. So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? I'd probably say Griffin Colapinto because he does the some crazy stuff in heats and is always super consistent

55 - SM Conner Dand kicking out some spray! Photo: Clint MaLaughlin
surphalosophy Now you've had various great results recently, so what's your goal now for the year to come? I would really like to win either Nationals or the Surfing America Championships at Lowers. What about training then? How do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? I train at DSC with Kevyn Dean every Monday and Wednesday.

Now you're from San Clemente and have no doubt surfed some epic breaks over in California. How would you rate those classic spots such as Trestles then? Trestles has some of the most consistently epic waves around I think, and then combine all the beach breaks just north of it around San Clemente and it makes for a perfect place to grow up as a surfer. So where else around the world have you been lucky enough to surf so far? I've been to Indo, Hawaii, Costa Rica, the East Coast and Mexico.
SM - 58

59 - SM Conner Dand double grabbing! Photo: Clint MaLaughlin
surphalosophy And when and where has your best surf session been then? We actually found this little right slab in the Mentawaiis and it was the best I have ever surfed. We named it Firecrackers. But what about the worst wipeout of your life so far? I've gotten the most worked at this beach break in front of my house actually haha

So what about future plans for travelling? Where do you want to head to and surf? I really want to go to Salina Cruz next year. Finally then, what about your future? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? I would obviously love to be on the WCT in five to ten years but if not then just to have a good job hopefully having to do something with surfing

In the right conditions, with winds from the north and swell from the south, there is one
spot on the south coast of Cornwall that will lighten a dark winter's day in the UK. Known
affectionally as' Levy', it is a British surfer's very own southern gem and this winter so far it has delivered some precious moments...

'Levy' is considered by many as England's best break The wave to the right hand of the harbour is formed over rock, blasted over 100 years ago when opening up the harbour
entrance. Righthanders are more popular with them breaking into the channel, but lefts can be just as good with a decent swell.

'Levy' is at its best with a clean south west swell and light offshore breezes from the

HotShots What got you first into surfing? I was always down the beach as a kid and I got my first surfboard when I was 7 which was a 6'0 second hand swelly. I then surfed basically everyday possible since then. After that I've had massive help from Sennen Surfing Centre, which I joined as soon as I could, as they helped develop my surfing through photo shoots, training sessions throughout the winter, took me on surf trips such as Morocco, helped me deal with any problems that occurred in my life and also introduced me to a lot of my friends. Without them I wouldn't be where I am now.
Who in surfing inspires you most? I'm always inspired by my friends,Isaac, friends,Isaac, Connor and Jowan and we're constantly trying to improve to keep up with each other, which pushes my surfing further. But I've always looked up to the local guys at Sennen who are making a living, doing what it takes to surf all the time such as Mikey Lay, James Parry and Dave Muir.

When and how did you become sponsored? I became sponsored by my local surf school, Sennen Surfing Centre about 3 years ago and then things progressed from there, as they helped me get onto O'Neill.
What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I have never liked comps too much especially growing up down at Sennen where everyone was into just enjoying surfing rather than competing to see who's the best. So I never really got into them. I have a lot more fun free surfing, making movies and going down to the beach with a few mates for the day rather than dealing with the hassle of comps. That said this year I'm going to be competing in the under 18s as part of making various edits around the UK. Now I have finished college, I have a lot more time to focus on doing what it takes to progress my surfing and doing as much as I can for my sponsors, which are just as supportive of me free surfing as doing comps.

What moment are you most proud of in your surfing career so far? As I've never done comps I've just been working to develop my free surfing and I'm now at a stage where my sponsors are giving me the support and development to look into a future career. So right now I'm proud to be able to be supported by brands such as O'Neill, Natural Balance & J.Leon shapes and basically still be able to do what I want rather than having to win contest to get to where I want, because they are helping to give me the opportunity to make it into the industry whether I want to go into contests or travel the world and progress with the media side of things Where around the world have you been lucky enough to travel to and surf? I have been to Morocco twice, stayed with Surf Maroc who where sick! Also France a couple of times, not really been travelling as much as I wanted but have big plans for this year – Indo and Australia, maybe even Cali and then what ever else comes my way!

When are where was your best surf session? It was a few years ago and it was down at Sennen, and all the group were there and it was a classic summer day, super clean pumping waves and one of the warmest days of the year. We got down at sunrise and literally surfed all day, only getting out for food and water, but then towards the end of the day there was a sick high tide shore break bank and it was pretty gnarly. Dave came in with the go-pro so we grabbed a couple of old bodyboards and messed around in that. Once we all got out we had a barbecue on the beach and when I finally got home I had the biggest poo head! (Ed- that's a wetsuit tan for our non surfer readers) What's the worst wipe out of your life? It was only a couple of months ago at Levy. Me and a friend were having an evening surf after college and it was pretty solid. I took off on a solid set wave and pulled into the barrel but got clamped and then washed into the inside. When I popped up, I tried to duck dive the second wave but it was only a couple of feet deep over the reef and it ripped my board away and pinned me against the reef and I cut all my hands and feet trying to push to get back up, then I had to ditch my board and take the rest of the set on the head as it was too shallow to duck dive.

Do you train as well as surf? I try to keep in fairly good shape. Luckily for me, I do so much sport that I can eat a lot of McDonald's and basically what ever I want. However I tend to train with body weight when I can get time and develop core strength and balance to help with surfing, and watch a lot of surf movies What do you do when you don't surf? I tend to eat a lot, spend time updating my blogs, watch surf movies and make edits, just relax and spend time with my girlfriend. Other than that, I skate when it's flat or in the winter when there's not much light.

Hopefully get to work with some of the pro's I look up to. I may even go down the route of competitions or making movies edits and being an ambassador for amazing brands which is something I want to push toward. Either way I'm going to be surfing ever day!

HotShots What first got you into surfing? I changed schools and all my new friends surfed so I took it up Who in surfing inspires you most? Parko and John John When and how did you become sponsored? A local clothing company spotted me when I was 10 years old and that was my first sponsor. After some good results I'm lucky now to be on the Billabong, Mayhem, FCS, Gorilla and Dicky Surf teams

HotShots What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I like both equally. I love competing because I'm a really competitive person and love the felling I get when competing in a comp. Learning new tricks and improving my surfing when free surfing gives you a totally different feeling of achievement, so I can't say I prefer one over the other.
What moment are you most proud of in your surfing career so far? My recent win in the Parko Grom Stomp was really great for me because I was able to share it with all my friends and family which felt like a big achievement for me. Having Joel there to present the trophy was an added bonus!

Where around the world have you been lucky enough to travel to and surf? I've surfed in Brazil and New Caledonia before I really got into surfing but since then I've been lucky enough to surf Fiji and I've surfed in almost every state in Australia. This year I hope to go to Gland and maybe Hawaii if I get the chance. When and where was your best surf session? I've had a few amazing days at DI over the years What's the worst wipeout of your life? At the bar when I had a 2 wave hold down on a solid day.

Do you train as well as surf? I was selected to take part in an elite athlete scholarship program run through the Ocean Performance Centre which is a high performance surf training facility and also a surf inspired fitness centre. I normally train twice a week doing very surf specific training. They even have a 25 metre pool for breath and paddling training. What do you do when you don't surf? I love to play footy and skate with my mates What's your goal for the next year? Get as much experience and success I can but most of all enjoy myself along the way And what about the future? I'd like to travel and surf as many good waves as I can and hopefully make the WCT
