TheProShow

It's been a year since we last spoke to you Harry and you've had another busy twelve months! First of all then, let's start with your travels. You're just back from another trip to Indo, so how was that this time around? This trip to Indo was one of the best ones! I think it gets better and better and exceeds expectations every time you go! We waited a little later to go this year so we would get more of the dry season swells and oh it paid off! It was pumping everyday! Never had so many barrels in my life! It was a lot more crowded but was worth it for sure!! The highlight for me was definitely getting bigger swells because the bigger the swell the bigger the barrel, right? haha Of course you're a seasoned Indo traveller, so where and when was your best session this time and how did it compare to your previous trips? My favourite session this year has to be one at Cobblestone. It was only me and one other person. We surfed for about 3 hours and didn't do a turn the whole time, just traded off barrels – that could be close to the best session of my life! I have had loads of sick sessions there but that one just topped all the ones from previous years!

Now you spend much more time away than you do here in the UK, though you were back in Newquay for a couple of months at the start of this year. How was it surfing back home then in the grips of a British winter? It's always nice to come home after long periods of time away, back to my family and friends. Whilst I was back at the start of the year, we actually scored really good waves! Got some good barrels and airs down on the south coast. Adjusting to the weather is always hard but I guess I've surfed so many winters here when I was younger, I know how uncomfortable it can get!

TheProShow

Indeed we've actually had some decent sessions this past winter on both the North and South coasts with you making the most of it at both your home break of Watergate and south coast gem Porthleven. So how do these classic Brit spots hold up on their day against other spots you've surfed around the world? Like they say, every dog has its day! You just have to have good timing and know where to go! The thing is anywhere you go in England just doesn't have the power or speed like the rest of Europe, but thats why everyone travels!

TheProShow

So before that you'd spent the end of your summer season over in Lanzarote which is another location you've been visiting a few times. So what is it about the Canary Islands' surf that keeps drawing you back? It's just close to home, cheap and there are always waves there! It breaks up the long winter at home! And the fact that I have a lot of good friends over there so it's nice to visit them all!

SM - 16

TheProShow

Over there then, with a good variety of beach and reef breaks to choose from, where for you are the best spots, the ones that always deliver that solid surf? Well there are pretty much some of the funnest lefts ever over there well for me anyway! The wind blows into them all day everyday! My favourite has to be the left at La Santa – it's got so much power and it's the same every time! Perfect for training! Now everyone knows that the surf in Lanzarote can be pretty heavy, so have you ever taken any hard wipeouts at say La Santa and its gnarly spots? Touch wood I haven't! I've broken plenty of boards and managed to get urchined in my knees but that's nothing compared to some of the stuff I've seen when I've been there!!

TheProShow

So you're heading back off to your second home of Hossegor again soon, and with the Pro Juniors coming up again soon, what are your goals for your time over there this year? Yes I leave for Hossegor in the middle of June and I'm super excited about getting back down there and scoring some waves! Hopefully more than last year!! I want to just be at the top my game and start off strong and finish in the top ranks so let's hope we get waves!

TheProShow Competitons aside, what about the freesurfing game? You've been working closely with your sponsors recently like the REEF edit from your recent Morocco trip, so what are your plans for any new edits over this summer? I'm going to be filming and shooting all summer long so we will see what happens! Like I said hopefully this year gives us more waves to play with!

SM - 22

Finally then what about plans for the future? This is your last year on the Pro Junior circuit so will we be seeing you stepping up to the QS series and continuing a journey towards that World Tour dream or have you plans for more travelling and pushing your freesurfing to new and higher limits? Of course I'm excited for the QS! I'm doing them again this year to gain points for when I'm out of the Pro Juniors. To be the best, you have to be able to do everything so I'm gonna go for it and then we will see what happens!!

What first got you into surfing? My brother not letting me boogie board. Who in surfing inspires you most? Griffin Colapinto When and how did you become sponsored? Finishing Second Place at Westerns when I was 12. Chad Wells picked me up for Quiksilver. What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? Competition surfing because I like to compete. It pushes you.

ChampChats Now the past couple of years have seen you performing well on the competitive circuit, though becoming the Junior Global Champion at the Volcom Totally Crustaceous Tour recently must have been a highlight. Talk us through the contest and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your title. Had to come home early from MX shooting with Seth de Roulet to even qualify for the event up in Ventura where I won. The waves were pumping in MX. It was super hard to leave but really stoked I did. The global event at Lowers was so sick. I guess there was 34 events around the world for surfers to qualify in order to compete at this event. Waves were really good. I just surfed and had fun. It was cool to surf against other guys from other countries. In the final I just wanted to surf it like I normally would during a free surf. I had some really fun waves and posted decent scores. All the way through that final it was dog fight. Surfing against Jake Marshall, Harley Ross from AUS and Will Reid I knew anyone one of them was able post some high scores. I was stoked that I came out with the win.

ChampChats

You had to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. How do you rate your surfing peers from around California at the moment? Some great surfers in California – Griffin Calopinto, Jake Marshall, Colt Ward, Kei Kobayashi, to name a few, are some of the best Juniors in the world. I am privileged to be able to come up in the ranks with these guys. We push each other. So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? Anyone of them are pretty gnarly. It's like a final every time you're matched up with these guys.

35 - SM Nolan knows how to impress above the lip too! Photo: Mike Healy

ChampChats

And now, does being the Volcom TCT Junior champion go down as your best victory to date? Yes. Last year I went to ISA's and placed 3rd, Surfing America Prime Championship I placed 2nd, NSSA Nationals U16 placed 2nd & U18 3rd. So this was a big deal for me. I needed to break through always being second.

ChampChats

Now you're already from California with some top quality waves like Trestles right on your door! So how would you rate your local spots? Lowers is the best with the south swells. It's one of the more high performance waves in the world. Rincon is also really epic but I don't get to go up there too much. Huntington is really good because there are always waves to ride.

Where else around the world have you been lucky enough to travel to and surf? I have surfed Fiji, Cloud Break was really awesome. Puerto, Pascualas, Playa Negra, Playgrounds, North Shore HI And when and where has your best surf session been then? My last trip to Cabo with Body Glove a few weeks ago. There was a big storm off the coast. Cheyne Magnusson and I flew down just before the storm hit, met up with local legend Justin Quirk and caught a reeling secret spot left that was barreling. The barrel was pretty boxed out, a few feet overhead on the sets and would spit a few times during your ride. Pretty epic. But what's been the worst wipeout of your life? Pascualas – I went down on a pretty big set. The board snapped in half and I was held down for a pounding. So what about future plans for travelling? Where do you want to head to and surf? I think I might be going somewhere to Central America with the Fox crew and Damien. Those plans are still being worked out. I would love to get on a boat trip to the Mentawai's at some point.

41 - SM Nolan Rapoza ripping out some spray! Photo: Chuck@Surf-shot.com

ChampChats

And what about training? How do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? I surf a bunch. I like to do land workouts with my friends. We push each other. Now you're a champ then, what's next? What are your goals for the year to come? I'm hoping to make the USA travel team for the U18 in October. I will do more Pro Junior Events and hope to qualify for Worlds. I also will do some QS events. Finally, where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? I hope to make the tour, travel a bunch, do some video and photo work.

45 - SM Leo Fioravanti firing out an impressive spray fan in the Maldives! Photo: Yaniv Vaknin

surphalosophy The surfing world held its breath at the end of January 2015 when the young Italian surfer, Leo Fioravanti

fell violently on a late drop at Pipe. Stretchered off the beach, the news soon followed of a broken back. But

anyone who knows Leo well would not have been surprised at all by a gladiatorial response to fight back. So true to form after four months of recovery, recuperation and plenty of rehabilitation training, Leo is back in the water! We caught up with him fresh off his first surf trip...

SM - 46

Fioravanti Fires Back!

47 - SM Leo looks like he's pointing in the right direction! Photo: Yaniv Vaknin

surphalosophy It's been just over a month since you've been back in the water Leo and I imagine you must be feeling pretty much as stoked as a grom hitting the lip for the very first time! How's

it been getting back into it then? Yes it's the best feeling ever! It's like starting to surf all over again. I love it even more than

I did! I missed it so much! It's been a little hard because my back is pretty stiff still but just being in the water is amazing.

SM - 48

Fioravanti Fires Back! So you were back in the water just 3 and a half months after that day back at Pipe. Did you have that length of time in mind as a target or were you just waiting until your body felt right to be back in the surf? I just waited until my back was good. I didn't have anything planned!

SM - 50

Fioravanti Fires Back! Being out of the water that long must have been tough, so what did you do to keep busy and get ready for the day when you'd get that green light to hit the surf again? At the end it went by fast but it was hard and took me a lot of hard work with all the rehabilitation training!

surphalosophy Since then, you seem to have wasted no time getting your surfing back on form, already heading off on your first trip since being back in the water over in the Maldives. Would you say getting to surf such near-perfect waves has helped getting back into it then? Well the Maldives are easy to surf! Just

perfect point breaks so I could take my time on the wave and slow everything down! It was an amazing trip, I loved it!

SM - 56

Fioravanti Fires Back!

57 - SM Leo Fioravanti firing out another impressive spray fan in the Maldives! Photo: Yaniv Vaknin

surphalosophy And have you had any good sessions while you've been over there? Yes I had some great sessions! Couple at Cokes and Chicken that I will remember forever!

SM - 58

Fioravanti Fires Back!

59 - SM Leo Fioravanti firing off those righthanders in the Maldives! Photo: Yaniv Vaknin

surphalosophy We've certainly already seen some slick moves going down over there so do you feel that you've managed to get yourself back quite quickly to

where you had been at the start of the year then or are you building up to it gradually? No I'm only about 50% at the moment. I'm still pretty stiff and just taking time to get back! Everyday I feel a little better and slowly pushing a little more.

SM - 60

Fioravanti Fires Back!

61 - SM Leo Fioravanti firing back into form! Photo: Yaniv Vaknin

surphalosophy And of course you ended last year in a really strong position on the QS rankings. So when do you think you'll be getting back on it and hitting the contest scene again this year? I don't know about competing. While I'm not 100%, I'm not gonna surf a heat. I don't know how long it will take so I'm just gonna surf, train, travel and see how I go!

SM - 62

Fioravanti Fires Back! The contest calendar will once again lead up to the classic Hawaii climax at the end of this year. So are you looking forward to getting stuck into a Pipeline session or will you be wanting to get your confidence back and ease into it? I want to surf in the Pipe Pro again for sure! Pipe is the best wave in the world and I can't wait to surf there again!

surphalosophy Finally then, after such a huge life experience, has that had any effect on your future goals or are you still as hungry as ever to go the whole way in world surfing? I can't wait for next year to have a full year. I want to come back stronger and better so I'm training a lot to achieve what I want!

Well thanks for talking to us – great to see you back on it again Leo! Cheers bro!

HotShots What first got you into surfing? Being at the beach with friends and family. A mate got a surfboard for his birthday and we all started from there. Who in surfing inspires you most? Probably Kelly as he still shreds in his forties, which hopefully means I've got at least 30 good years left. When and how did you become sponsored? My first main sponsor was at the UK Pro Tour Saltrock Open in Croyde 2010. I'd done well in Europe finishing 9th at the Euro Champs representing Wales, so Spencer from Quiksilver watched me in my heats at the Saltrock and I got into the final. Afterwards he talked to my parents and that was that. Then after Newquay Boardmasters in 2013, O'Neill got in touch and fixed me up with them. They were looking for a new signing and they had a chat with Ashleigh who runs the surf school at Watergate and she put in a good word for me. I've used Graeme Bunt’s boards at Local Hero surfboards for years. Graeme has been so supportive and it's great to have a custom board under your feet and the help and support of a local shaper. My local surf store is Anns Cottage, who have shops all over Cornwall. They've never had team riders before and were keen to help a local grom, so I had to send in pics and a CV for that one in 2012. My newest sponsor is Butta Surf Wax, who I met on the O'Neill Tour bus the other week.

HotShots What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I prefer to free surf as you can pick the best spots and waves and don't have to surf the contest site all day, but I do enjoy contests because it's good to see how everyone else is surfing and it always pushes your ability. What moment are you most proud of in your surfing career so far? That's a hard one as I have had so many good experiences through surfing. Contest wise it was great last year to win my first UK Pro Tour events. I'd had lots of second places at UK Pro contests, and then suddenly I won two in a row, the Cornish Schools and British. I was also champion of Wales and won the Rip Curl Gromsearch, Elusive and Jesus Classic 2014 titles too. I also went to Nicaragua for the World Games last year, surfing for Wales which was brilliant and won a trip to Mundaka in December through Rip Curl for the Euro Gromsearch finals. I can't pick one event so I would have to say I am most proud to get help and support from my family and sponsors to do something I love. Where around the world have you been lucky enough to travel to and surf? Around Europe including France, Portugal, Spain and the Canaries. Plus Morocco, Panama, Nicaragua and Ecuador in South America.

“I have had so many good experiences through surfing. SM - 92

HotShots When and where was your best surf session? Probably last year in Polzeath. There was a light onshore wind and it was just about overhead, and one of those endless super fun days with good people in the water. What's the worst wipeout of your life? Hard to believe but it was in Porthcawl, Wales. I was 11 years old with a heavy winter storm swell and the beach was pretty much maxed out. I got caught paddling back out on a heavy set which slammed me to the sand and snapped my board. I seemed to be held down for ages. Do you train as well as surf? The best training for surfing is surfing. Living in Cornwall I surf all year round and there are a lot of heavy paddle outs, especially in winter, which is great for strength. I also skateboard a lot so I'm always pretty active. What do you do when you don't surf? I'm usually in College in Truro, or skating with my mates or playing my guitar, staring out the window waiting for swell. What's your goal for this year? To try and push my surfing ability to the next level. I'll do a few contests too, with one of my main goals to surf well at the World Games in California later in the year. And what about the future? I want to travel and see more of the world. The great thing about surfing is you can make friends anywhere and experience so much.

HotSpots Over in the English Channel lies the small island of Jersey whose thriving surfng community are hoping to make a diference... so here's Jake Powell, founder of 'The Mango Tree' to tell us how he and fellow Jersey surfer Will Glenn are going to do just that!

'The Mango Tree' is a local lifestyle brand set up by two surfers, myself, Jake Powell and good friend Will Glenn with the help of our entourage – Josh Evans, Nathan Elms, Brad Ferguson, Matt Chapman and many others I've forgotten to mention. Through 'The Mango Tree' we aim to help promote a pro-active way of life. By surfing, selling clothes and getting involved with the odd event here and there, we want to create a community that believes in having fun and living life to the fullest!

The Jersey Surf Scene is a really good one which we're really proud to be apart of. For the size of the island we have a ton of top surfers, ranging from the older boys to the up and coming groms and also have some of the biggest party animals known to man. The Jersey way of life is pretty laid back and it seems like everyone around in the surf scene is always scheming on finding a way to surf more and work less. The fact that Jersey is so small means the surf community is really tight and your always likely to surf with a few friends whenever and wherever you go in.

Our main coast of waves runs along ‘the 5 mile road’. The main break, ‘The Watersplash’ is in the heart of the bay and that generates the most swell and usually has the best banks. 'The Watersplash' is also a beach bar/nightclub where everyone hangs out/drinks/gets kicked out of during the weekends and after surfs.

SM - 102

OVER IN THE MANGO TREE

Due to our massive tidal movements, you have to look up the coast a little when the tide is high as the tide then crashes against the sea wall the Germans built back in the 1940s when we were occupied. Both north and south of the 5 mile road on high tides can create punchy waves similar to France due to the gradient of the beaches being steeper and can hold the odd barrel or two.

HotSpots Personally for me, surfing out front at ‘The Splash’ with all the usual suspects on a low to mid tide with a bit of swell is hard to beat. Everyone's always got a story to tell from the weekend so the breaks in between sets are usually the funnest part of the surf. The surf itself can get really good too and when all the elements combine Splash can act as a world class beach break with really peaky sections to work with. A nice evening surf at one of our high tide spots can also be a lot of fun. It’s at one of these breaks you're more likely to sneak a barrel or two and also enjoy the amazing scenary the breaks have to offer. They're also all with in 5 minutes of each other so you can pretty much write everywhere off if it’s not happening and get on with the beers haha.

We’ve had a good start to the year so far. Our high tide spots were really fun last month and people were getting barreled before work on an frequent basis! When there is a swell, everyone tends to really make the most of it due to the inconsistent summer swell we have – you never know how long till the next one will hit.

Mango Tree member Josh Evans spared us a few moments to share his thoughts on what makes the surf over in Jersey stand out: You've been surfing 'The Splash' for much of your life then Josh, so hows it been so far this year? The surf has been on and off but we've had a good start to this summer. Early in spring, word has it you had some really good sessions then? It was particularly good in spring producing some good head high clean waves. The best spots at this time were La Saline and Splash on the pushing tide. So what makes an all time classic 'Splash' session? Consistent good clean waves and when the sand banks are right.

HotSpots And what about the local scene and the Jersey surf community? Everyone is friendly, chilled and keen to surf creating a good vibe in our surfing community. Now on its day, how does 'Splash' compare to other UK breaks? When everything comes together the Splash is probably one of best places to be but the UK has more of a selection of breaks. What about other breaks you've surfed around the world though? Would you say 'Splash' holds its own as that memorable spot to come home to? Yes I have surfed many places around the world but surfing Splash with friends is definitely the most memorable!

HotSpots I'd like to think 'The Mango Tree' is all of the Jersey surf community. We have a really good, tight group of friends that all help promote us and Jersey in some way shape or form. We'd like to help put Jersey on the map for everyone to see and show everyone how lucky we are to live here!
