What first got you into surfing? I first started surfing when I was 10 years old. My brothers started surfing first and naturally I wanted to do it also. I did nippers before that so I already had some experience in the ocean. Who in surfing inspires you most? Graham Hynse. He is a well known and respected surf coach in South Africa. He is really passionate about surfing and helping surfers improve. When and how did you become sponsored? I first got sponsored by Oakley when I was 12 or 13 years old. I was surfing at a spot called Yellowsands with Greg Emslie, and afterwards he got hold of me and offered me a deal with Oakley. Then when I was around 14, Hurley approached me with a sponsorship. What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I enjoy both competition surfing and free surfing and so it is difficult to choose a favourite. Competitions are exciting and really push me to improve my surfing. Free surfing is just about having fun in the water with friends.

Now the past couple of months have seen you performing well on the competitive circuit, winning the Under 20 RVCA Junior Challenge and of course before that you had been Under 17 South African Junior Champion. So talk us through those contests and the highs and lows that lead to you earning the titles. Yes I've had some good and not so good results this year. I started off winning a Quiksilver Junior event in Cape Town. Then I got a 3rd in the next Quiksilver Junior event in Durban. Next there was the RVCA Junior which I managed to win, but then later on in the Billabong Junior at J-Bay I got knocked out in the quarterfinals. The U17 SA Junior title I won 2 years ago. Last year I ended up 2nd in the U17 SA Junior Champs. There are always going to be highs and lows in competitive surfing. It is important to celebrate and be thankful for the highs, but then to grow and learn from the lows.

TheProShow

You had to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. How do you rate your surfing peers over in South Africa at the moment? There is a high level of surfing amongst my peers in South Africa. We are all friends, but we are also all competitive and want to come out on top. So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? I would probably least want to draw Dylan Lightfoot. He is a good friend of mine from Jeffreys Bay. He is really focused and consistently surfs well. And did being SA Junior champion go down as your best victory to date? Yes becoming SA U17 Champion is probably my favourite result to date.

TheProShow

Now that you've had this win at the RVCA Junior Challenge, what are your goals for the rest of the year? My goals for the rest of the year are to learn and grow in my surfing as much as possible during these few QS comps in Europe. I also hope to earn some points to help me get into bigger QS competitions for next year. There is also a Billabong Junior contest later this year in Cape St Francis, which is close to Jeffreys Bay and I would really like to do well in that. You're not only a solid competition surfer but also top of your game when it comes to expressive surfing too, winning a number of recent expression sessions at Ballito and JBay too. So do you think it's important to have the mix of solid rail surfing but also a strong aerial repertoire to do well in competition surfing nowadays? Thank you. Yes it is definitely important now days to have a good mix of both. If you can mix good rail surfing with progressive surfing the judges will reward you with excellent scores.

Of course earlier this year, you were selected to represent South Africa at the World Junior Championships but due to the event clashing with your final exams, you've had to withdraw. Instead you're spending the summer doing the QS events in Europe, so has that driven you even harder to do well in these competitions? Yes I was excited to be selected to represent South Africa, especially since the World Juniors is going to take place in California this year. A good education is really important though and so I have to put finishing school first. Pulling out has in some way driven me to do well in these competitions in Europe. These will be the only international contests that I will get to do this year and so I must gain all the experience I can. And how's it been going, both your first time in Europe and taking on the QS? It's gone alright so far. I must admit I am a bit disappointed to have been knocked out of the Lacanau Pro so early as I thought I could do much better. Luckily I have got 3 more contests to do so I still have other chances to get a result. Europe is very different to my home, but I am enjoying the experience. There are some fun beach- breaks to surf and the scenery and architecture is beautiful. SM - 20

Now you're already from J-Bay with some top quality waves right on your doorstep! So how would you rate your local spots? Jeffreys Bay has world class waves, it's my favourite place on the planet and it will be difficult to find better waves elsewhere. And how do they compare to other spots you've surfed around the world? I went to Portugal last year and there were some good point breaks there, but in my eyes J-Bays much better! When and where has your best surf session been then? I've had so many good surfs out at Supertubes, I can't remember when my best surf was, but I know it's been out there. But what's been the worst wipeout of your life? One of the worst wipeouts that I can remember was at a spot called Coins in J-Bay. I tried to pull in to the barrel, but got sucked over the falls. My board hit my foot and fractured a bone.

SM - 22

TheProShow So what about future plans for travelling? Where do you want to head to and surf? I haven't planned anything yet, but I know I would love to go to the Islands off Sumatra in Indonesia. I would also like to visit the Hurley High Performance Training Centre in Australia sometime. Finally then, where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? In 5 to 10 years time I hope to have had a successful QS career and to be on the Championship Tour hunting down a World Title!

Julian Wilson Favourite place to surf? Sumbawa Favourite surf movie? Sampler, Dane Reynolds Favourite surf trick? Barrel Favourite board? Kazuma 5'7x17'1/2x2'1/8 Well Leo, last time we spoke to you, you'd just become Under 16 World Junior Champion and since then you've gone on to become Under 16 European Junior Champion too. So talk us through that contest out in the Azores that lead to your latest champion title? It was a very long and hard competition for me because I was eliminated in the 1st Round so I was then in the Repechage which I took on heat by heat until reaching the final and then won with a total of 16 points! So 2014 was a great year for me with the 2 major titles, World Champion and European Champion. SM - 28

Longhaul Leo-Paul!

29 - SM Leo Etienne hitting another lip! Photo: Dean Vincent

ChampChats

So this year you're back on the French Junior team and that started off with a trip to South Africa. How was that then? I went to South Africa for qualification for the ISA contest, I was doing one month of intense training with the coach of the France team and then another week of training in Hossegor this summer which went well as I'm back representing France. And how did the waves in South Africa compare with those in France or back home in Guadeloupe? The waves in South Africa were a beach break with long rights which was perfect for my forehand surfing. Then in France, there are lefts and rights on each beach break. Whereas in Guadeloupe there are lefts on each reef break which is great for practising my backhand. You also got to surf against the South African Junior team. Do you find that helps you see what the standard of other surfers is like from around the world? At the end of the training we had a competition, Team France VS South Africa and I won in the Under 16s. The level was very high and the South African surfers will be big rivals for sure at the ISA World Championships! SM - 30

SM

ChampChats

Back in Europe then, how's your contest season been going so far? This is actually my first year on the Pro Junior and my target was simply to gain the experience to then perform well in 2016 with the new rules of the WSL Pro Junior becoming Under 18. Currently I am leading the RipCurl Gromsearch in France though so that's going well. You've obviously continued to impress, having picked up new sponsor, Protest. Yes Protest are now supporting me for several years as well as Kazuma Hawaii Surfboard and Feather fins. Now of course, you've got your sights set on this year's World Junior Championships in California. What have you been doing to prepare for the event? I spent the summer in Europe where I surfed mostly beach breaks every day. Now I am in Guadeloupe and I'll be doing plenty of physical training to be ready. And being world champion already, you're aiming to defend your title. How does it feel in that position? Does it add extra pressure? Heading to the Worlds with a title to defend does give me extra pressure but also an additional incentive and motivation. Everyone else will be watching me closely now whereas last time, SM - 32 I was the outsider.

ChampChats

The surfing talent across the world is extremely high so who do you feel are your main contenders as you approach the event this year? I didn't follow my rivals so as not to put pressure on myself but I have a lot of pressure already with my French teammates. So of course you'd be stoked to be Champion again but what other goals do you have for the year? My target is to keep my World Champion title but I also hope to qualify for the World Final of the RipCurl Gromsearch because this is my last year. Finally then, where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? My goal is to be as soon as possible on the WCT. SM - 34

When and how did you become sponsored? I actually became sponsored by SUPERbrand off Instagram. What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I love competitions because it's more all a game, but I love free surfing so much as well. Maybe I prefer competitions more at the moment.

Now the past few years have seen you performing consistently well at all levels. You've just made the finals of an Under 17 NSSA event over in California and earlier this year you became Under 16 English Champion having been Under 14 English Champion before that. So talk us through your approach to contests then? Haha, thank you! I would say when there are good waves and you're training I compete better. If there aren’t any waves, you still try and find waves, but it's harder to stay focused! I imagine you have to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. How do you rate your surfing peers both in the UK and elsewhere at the moment then? Yes the standard is so high nowadays, it's hard! Everybody is really good to be honest! So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? I don't really mind who I'm drawn against because it enables you to work harder, and if you loose, you learn from your mistakes.

SM - 42

Eno de Mexico

43 - SM Eno James jams another off the top! Photo: Stu Gaston

Now you've had various great results recently, so what's your goal for the rest of this year? I am going up this weekend to another NSSA event in California, and I would love to win and do well in a couple of them this year! What about training then? How do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? Well, I watch loads of surfing videos, or I compete with kids out in the water in California.

'I would love to win and do well in a couple of them this year!' SM - 44

Eno de Mexico

45 - SM Eno James grabs some air time! Photo: Bella Hunt

surphalosophy

Now you're a Brit living in the surfing town of Sayulita in Mexico. How did that come about then? Well, actually my parents were born in England and I was born in Mexico. My parents went to Australia to surf for one year, and they kept hearing about how good Mexico was, so they took a LOONNGG holiday. Twenty-one years later my parents are now working on their HOLIDAY and so here we are still in Mexico! You've no doubt surfed some epic breaks over in Mexico near to where you live. How would you rate those classic spots then? I love taking trips north and south of where I live. It seems like the more south you go, the heavier it gets, and the more north you go, the longer the waves get.

SM - 46

Eno de Mexico

47 - SM Eno James can always seek out that section! Photo: Lloyd Cole

surphalosophy

And how do they compare to the surf when you return to England? It's not as good, but its definitely still super fun. A bit colder but so fun. So where else around the world have you been lucky enough to surf so far? I've surfed in Sri Lanka, Indo, California, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico, England, France, Spain‌ And when and where has your best surf session been then? Probably in Sri Lanka or Bali! I love that part of the world. EVERYTHING IS SO PERFECT! But what about the worst wipeout of your life so far? The worst wipeout is actually probably in England. It was a BIG swell and my wetsuit filled up with water and I got stuck to the bottom for some time. So what about future plans for travelling? Where do you want to head to and surf? I want to travel everywhere, haha‌ Surf beautiful perfect blue water waves.

So with many of the most talented junior surfers from around the world soon to be gathering in Oceanside, California for the ISA World Junior Championships, we thought we'd take a more in depth look at what this well known spot has to offer..

Many of the world's best young surfers are soon to be gathering in one of California's best surfing spots – Oceanside. There they'll take on one of the most prestigious events in any junior surfers contest calendar – the ISA World Junior Championships. For many years now, ISA have favoured the warmer locations of the Central American region so it was something of a departure to see this year's event destined for the iconic surfing area of California, most likely governed by the time of year as of course this part of the world should start to see some good autumn swells hitting the coastline any time soon. So with the whole of the Californian coast to choose from, why Oceanside? Well according to the ISA themselves, “The spot receives northwest, west and southwest swells, and it is considered one of the most consistent beach breaks in Southern California. Junior surfers should expect sandbars moving and shifting along shore, but there are basically waves everywhere near, especially on the north end at the harbour's north and south jetties, and on both sides of the pier.” So that's their take on this iconic spot, how does the reality shape up...

Actually that's all looking pretty promising but don't just take our word for it. Every year, thousands of people flock to Oceanside from all over. With its 3.5 miles of white sand beaches, it's a perfect stretch to find lots of sandbars which makes the surf good in many spots up and down those beaches. That said, the Oceanside Pier is the best place to surf in Oceanside. Even in summer, Oceanside Pier produces really fun, well-shaped waves so when the autumnal swells begin to hit it can really crank up the quality of waves here. Both sides of the pier are very popular and on a good day can be quite crowded. But most of the time there is good surf right around the pier. Although these spots will most often have a crew of surfers on them, on better days, the peaks up and down the beach will be just as good. Oceanside is angled to receive southwest swells more readily than the beaches of central San Diego County, and, during southwest swells, it attracts surfers from all parts because of the quality of its waves. So on the right swell, there will be plenty of barrels to get tubed in and so many sections to punt from, that even the hungriest of upcoming surfers should be satisifed!

While the pier is definitely the best place to surf in Oceanside, the north side jetties by the Harbour are definitely a close second. Most locals agree that when the surf is small, the best place to paddle out at is in the Harbour because it will be biggest there. There is a large jetty to the North of the beach and during a strong South swell, it can produce some amazing rights that peel off into the beach. Because of the positioning of the harbour jetties, you don't get a lot of sand being pushed down the beach‌the sand between the entrance and the north jetty stays pretty consistent and when a good sand bar forms it has a tendency to last for a while. To the South of the beach there is another jetty which is usually a tad more crowded but can also produce some really fun waves with the right conditions. There always seems to be a lot of sand around the south jetty, thanks mostly to the river dumping out sand during heavy rains and runoff. It doesn't make for the cleanest water but it does make for some decent shaped waves! And with that it seems quite clear why Oceanside has the reputation of being one of Southern California's most consistent spots and so the ideal spot to hold a contest of worldwide proportions!

Name: Cieran Hughes Age: 15 Nickname: Cie Years surfing: 7 Where you live: Southerndown, Glamorgan Sponsors: Quiksilver, FCS, Gorilla, Holysport LS, JP surfboards. Local break/s: Ogmore, Llantwit Major Favourite surfer? John John Florence Favourite place to surf? Thurso is my favourite wave, 100% I'm going back up there this winter. Ogmore when the banks are good and Llantwit when it's on. Favourite surf movie? Who is JOB, it's an old one but pretty funny. Favourite surf trick? A carve or a barrel when I can sniff one out Favourite board? The board I'm on now, it's a 5'7x18 1/2 x 2 3/16 JP, it's an all round board for British waves so not too much rocker and plenty of foam under your chest. I've just got another one for California which is a bit more refined for better waves so can't wait to try it out, should be good for the winter here too.

What first got you into surfing? My dad I guess, he surfs so it was either sit on the beach and watch or get in there with him. When and how did you become sponsored? A local rep saw me when I was a mini grom. I'm stoked with the support I have and don't take it for granted. Big thanks to Liam O’Shea, he's helped me out since I was like 10! What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I enjoy both but prefer free surfing because you usually free surf in better waves and there's less stress. Comps are fun especially now there's more Welsh groms travelling to the events but the waves are generally pretty poor, the only decent waves I've had for a comp this year was the Welsh nationals back in May. Apart from that it’s been like 1-2ft in every event, it's not the dream tour that's for sure! SM - 136

What contest result are you most proud of in your surfing career so far? Any of my Welsh titles, pretty stoked I made the Welsh Open semi finals this year too. How do you feel about competing in the ISA World Junior Championships then? Super proud to be surfing for Wales! It's the ultimate honour! I've never surfed in Cali before so looking forward to that. I hope we get some good waves. And what have you been doing to prepare for the event? Coaching with Sam Moore every week, free surfing as much as I can and training when there's no surf.

When and where has your best surf training session been recently? I had a session with Sam Moore in Gower recently that was fun, got some decent waves in Langland. It was a weekday so wasn't packed like it usually is. And what other training have you been doing to keep on top of your fitness whilst also keeping on pushing your surfing? I train with my local lifeguards every week. I know the coaches so we have a laugh but they push me pretty hard. I also do high intensity interval training when the surf's been flat.

The surfing talent across the world at the moment is extremely high so who do you feel are your main contenders as you approach the event? I was lucky enough to surf in last years World Champs and know that pretty much everyone is a contender. The standard is so high I'd never seen kids surf like that before... I saw a Brazilian kid I'd never heard of do a kerrupt flip in a heat. What's your goal for the event? To put in a good performance and enjoy the whole experience. I know the standard of kids we'll be surfing against so I just want to perform the best I can and enjoy it. And what do you want to achieve in the rest of the year? There's not many comps left this year but I'm going to try and make a few. I'll hopefully go on another trip somewhere over the winter but I'll be skint after California so I doubt it's going to be anywhere that warm!

Mason Ho Favourite place to surf? Hossegor/Hawaii hard to choose Favourite surf movie? What's Really Going On Favourite surf trick? A super clean reverse, like straight into another turn feels the nicest but a big forehand wrap probably looks best! Favourite board? At the moment it's my 5'9 Celtic model but I've got two freshies on the way so I could see one of those replacing it as my fave!

What first got you into surfing? My dad for sure! Where I live, no one really surfs that much so without him I would never have tried it! When and how did you become sponsored? I've picked up my sponsors over the years as I've progressed and had more coverage but I got with O'Shea a few years ago and they have always treated me so well! And picked up Celtic two years after that and just in these recent months got picked up by Angry Pirate Wax so I'm super stoked!!! What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? Definitely comps!! Even though I'm not that good at them, I love to put pressure on myself in everything I do! And I guess surf comps are like a way to test your ability! Good to get the adrenaline going too! I also learn so much every time I surf a comp so I love that aspect as well!

What contest result are you most proud of in your surfing career? I have never done too well as far as the whole competing side of things is concerned, but my 4th at the RipCurl Gomsearch is a big highlight! How do you feel about competing in the ISA World Juniors then? When I heard that I had been selected to represent Wales, I was so happy! For me I just love the fact that I get to represent my country at a world level, sounds patriotic and stuff but it's true! And what have you been doing to prepare for the event? Well I've been training hard with the boys with weekly sessions running with our coach! The monthly Welsh training meetings have helped loads as they give you something to work towards every month, but in this flat spell we've been having, I've just tried to keep up my fitness.

When and where has your best surf training session been recently? The Freshwater West training with the team was the one! We just had pumping waves the whole weekend, so much surfing got done, we were really able to analyse footage and get reliable feedback because we just had tonnes of clips! And what other training have you been doing to keep on top of your fitness whilst also keeping on pushing your surfing? A lot of paddle stuff, I try to swim as often as I can, and the odd run on the treadmill from time to time, just to keep up cardio!

The surfing talent across the world at the moment is extremely high so who do you feel are your main contenders as you approach the event? Honestly everyone is so good it's a tough field! For me, because it's a team event, I look at the countries rather than just individuals! There's the obvious ones, like Hawaii, Australia and America but this year I think there'll be a couple dark horses from countries like Brazil, France and Spain!! What's your goal for the event then? I think making a heat or two would be a massive achievement for me! But I'm really going to try get my head down and go for it! My surfing has come along loads recently, but the main aim is to beat Team GB! And what do you want to achieve in the rest of the year? Well I'd like to try make another final of a British event and try keep any momentum going through to next year!

TheGoss What first got you into surfing? My dad and my mum would push me in the white water when we would be down the beach and my older brother would be surfing When and how did you become sponsored? Always bought my boards off John Purton and James Jones I've known for long time so he got me with everyone else and Mark Welshy Howard got me with Inlayz. It all really happened after the winter edit I made earier this year What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I enjoy both! I've always been competitive so I do really enjoy competition but saying that I didn't do competitions for many years. Before that I free surfed everyday which I still do. Free surfing's so much fun because you don't have a time limit and you're not surfing against anyone so you can just do what you want! What contest result are you most proud of in your surfing career so far? I would say I'm most proud of winning the second leg of the Gromsearch and getting 5th in the first which means I qualify for the European final!

How do you feel about competing in the ISA World Junior Championships then? I'm really excited to compete in the Worlds! It will be a good opportunity to push the level of my surfing and will also be the biggest comp I've done in my career so far And what have you been doing to prepare for the event? I've been surfing everyday more than once if I don't have school to get my surfing to the highest level I can by the time I get to the Worlds When and where has your best surf training session been recently? My best surf training session lately has been Welsh Team training at Freshwater West. And what other training have you been doing to keep on top of your fitness whilst also keeping on pushing your surfing? I've been training when it's flat in the gym or at home and just staying flexible stretching a lot, also I've been doing some excercise on my knees to make sure they're in good shape.

The surfing talent across the world at the moment is extremely high so who do you feel are your main contenders as you approach the event? I think Brazil will have a nuts team as there's so much talent coming out of there and the American team will obviously be really strong. What's your goal for the event then? I want to just try and make as many heats as I can and prove myself in a world event And what do you want to achieve in the rest of the year? My goals for the rest of the year are do well in the British and do well in the Euro final of the Gromsearch!
