Of course, competing for your country at the ISA World Junior Championships at Oceanside just down the road from your local spots must have been a highlight. How was it being part of the team that took the eventual Gold medal then? It was a great experience representing my country and one I will always remember. And how did you find the experience taking on the other top junior surfers from around the world? It was fun surfing against juniors from around the world with all the cheering on the beach. The atmosphere and waves were just the best...

Competitons aside, you also had a busy time travelling last year, notching up trips to Hawaii, Mexico and Nicaragua to name a few. First of all then, you've been to Hawaii quite a lot now so what's it like surfing at the spiritual home of wave riding? It is fun, exciting, and very scary. Never let down your guard or you will pay the price. Of the other places you've travelled to and surfed, where and when was your best session? I went on a fun trip to the Maldives and had some good sessions. Looking ahead to this year then, you're just about to head off on another trip. So where to this time? I'm not sure yet as El Nino may have some surprises! And where else do you plan or hope to travel to and surf this year then? Places that I haven't been to yet so long as they've got pumping waves!

Back home, you ended 2015 by putting up an impressive edit full of some seriously solid surfing for a fifteen year old and the social media response was massive! So have you plans for continuing to up your own online profile with fresh material this coming year? I hope to go on some great trips this year resulting in some fresh experiences to document. Finally then what about your future? Is your goal to one day be on the Tour or are you going to carve out your own destiny and be known for your freesurfing? Not sure where my future will go, but my goal is to do well in school and create as many career options for myself in the future.

Jeffreys Bay, Puerto Escondido, Trestles and Keramas in Bali. Favourite surf movies? Jon Jon's View from a Blue Moon, and Dear Suburbia. Favourite surf trick? Big slob grab straight airs. Favourite board? Depends on the conditions, but my go-to everyday board is my 5'8" Firewire. SM - 24

What first got you into surfing? I've been surfing since before I can remember, but my Dad took me surfing at 4 months old for the first time. I stood up at 2½, and first paddled out alone at 4½. Who in surfing inspires you most? My Dad, but I look to the World Surf League surfers for the moves I'd like to do. Plus guys like Dane Reynolds, Matt Meola and Mason Ho. When and how did you become sponsored? Gary Linden gave me a board in California when I was 7, and I've got boards shaped by him ever since. Then I won an event in Mexico and got an accessory sponsorship as part of the prize at 10. I was in a final in California when Nev Hyman saw me and got word to Mark Price from Firewire who began sponsoring me at 11. Barry van der Meulen, an SA guy from Huntington Beach, got me hooked up with Futures Fins at 13. Vestal watches started supporting me at 15, and after I won the King of the Groms, Quiksilver signed me from 2016. What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? My best times are surfing with friends and going to new locations for contests and free surfs.

ChampChats Now the past couple of years have seen you performing well on the competitive circuit, though winning the 2015 Quiksilver King of the Groms in Brazil recently must have been a highlight. Of course it had all begun with an online competition and you'd been chosen by Dane Reynolds as a wildcard entry to the event so talk us through the whole contest and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your title. Well I had a few video clips from New Pier around all that Xenophobia time in April 2015, and the Quiksilver King of the Groms event came up. It was an online comp, with winners going to a grand final at some secret destination. So the first part was the Instagram challenge where we had to enter 3 fifteen second clips. One was an air judged by Ando, one a carve judged by Dane, and another a combination of moves that Jeremy Flores judged. Over 1000 people entered, but only 10 from each category were chosen. I got picked by Ando for a New Pier air I did. Funny thing is I had met him the December before, surfing at Port Alfred near JBay. We traded boards for a few waves, and he's a really nice person. So the 30 guys from the 3 categories had to do a 2 minute video. Seven guys were chosen by public votes, and 3 who didn't get enough votes were chosen by the judges Dane, Ando and Jeremy. I guess Dane liked my video and put me into the final as a wildcard. I was so stoked! And I want to thank everyone who tried hard to get me in, and voted for my video. Thank you all!

ChampChats So the final was held at one of the most beautiful locations in the world, Fernando De Noronha in Brazil. Two days of trials were held to choose the four finalists. Each day, the morning location was a reef break that peaked and ran a perfect left and right called Boldro. Then after lunch as the tide filled in, the location moved to the well known spot called Casimba de Padre which has the giant rock in the background. Four 5 man heats were held at each spot, with us surfing two mixed heats at each location. As with the first round criteria, we were evaluated on the best score out of 10 from each of air, rail game and combo moves. A maximum total of 30 possible points per day gave us a score out of 60 from which the four finalists were chosen. The final was then basically a free surf, where whoever surfed the best in all 3 categories we had been surfing to, was crowned the winner. You had to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. How do you rate your surfing peers from around the world at the moment? 7 of the 10 finalists were surfers who had qualified in the Air category, so everybody ripped! All the guys were really cool too so we had such fun together! So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against and why? Sammy Pupo because he was ripping the whole time during the 2 trial heats. And now, does being King of the Groms go down as your best victory to date? For sure! SM - 30

ChampChats Now you spend time in South Africa, Mexico and California, surfing top quality waves like Trestles, J-Bay and Puerto Escondido and the point breaks nearby! So how would you rate these spots? Well J-Bay is the best coldwater point break in the world, Trestles is the best rippable wave in the USA, and Puerto Escondido has the heaviest beach break barrels in the world. The points are such fun because they're long and the water is warm. Where else around the world have you travelled to and surfed then? I've surfed in Indonesia, Brasil, Mexico, El Salvador, Hawaii, California, Texas and South Africa. And when and where has your best surf session been then? Many sessions at a secret spot in Mexico! What's been your worst wipeout? On my 8th birthday, I was surfing a reef break and fell on an air quite far inside. My leash was tangled around a rock when I got caught inside by a big set. I ended up with 28 sea urchins stuck in my foot. So what about future plans for travelling? Starting this year, I'll be spending quite a bit more time on the road doing Firewire and Quiksilver promotional duties, along with some contests and free surf trips. Where do you want to head to and surf? I've never been to the Mentawais, or on an Indo boat trip, so that's high on my list of trips to do.

Now you're a champ then, what's next? It's opened up some great opportunities, mainly through the sponsorship with Quiksilver. Firewire have believed in me for 4 years, and their support of my surfing has been really great. They had begun to cover my travel expenses before I won the King of the Groms, and give me as many boards as I need. What are your goals for the year to come? I want to surf a lot, win bigger contests, and qualify for the WSL World Champs this year. And what about training, how do you keep on top of fitness and keep on pushing your surfing? I had a personal trainer for the last 3 months in JBay who had a program specifically designed around surfing. Now I'm in Hawaii, training with Kid Peligro. He's a Ginastica Natural Instructor, and a 4th degree Jiu-Jitsu instructor. Finally, where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? On the WSL World Tour, chasing world titles and surfing the best waves on the planet!

How big a part does surfing play in your life? My life is quite busy because I don' don't live in a place with waves. When I'm in Italy, I study for the first year of High School in Pescara and I keep training with other sports like longboard skating, windsurfing, swimming. When I' I'm abroad, I try to focus completely on surfing and keep studying using the internet When and how did you become sponsored? The sponsors came gradually: they saw me in action and in some videos and then decided to contact me. Who in surfing inspires you most? Mick Fanning and Julian Wilson What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I like competitions because I have the chance to compete with other surfers but freesurf is also amazing because I just love the freedom of it!

surphalosophy Now it's been over a year since we last spoke to you Edoardo, so first talk us through how your contest season went in 2015 and the highs and lows that lead to your results? During these years my main goal was to improve my surf skills trying to become a surfer with complete competences. In 2015 I signed up for “Le “Le Tetard” Tetard” a competition in France in Biarritz where I faced the best French guys and some others guys from other countries. Surfing very well, I made it to the finals where, unfortunately I decided to wait for bigger waves and it ended up that I didn' didn't surf at all. Anyway a great result confirming the good job I'm I'm doing. As well as competing, you've also spent a good amount of time travelling, surfing and training at various spots around the world. You're just back from another trip to Lanzarote so what is it about the island and its surf that keeps drawing you back? Yes, living in Pescara where we have no waves forces me to organize accordingly for training sessions in places with good waves. Often I' I'm in Lanzarote because it' it's close to Italy and according to me and my father, who follows me technically speaking too, it' it's a very complete place because of the different nature and kind of waves. We think it' it's the right choice to gain as much as possible for my surf life at this time. Moreover in the water the general skill level is quite high and I became friends with Finnley and Cristian, two local groms who I train with when I'm there.

You also spent a lot of time last summer in Hossegor where you got to surf with some inspiring World Tour surfers like Jeremy Flores. Does being in the water alongside such top level surfers help you to push your own level even higher? Hossegor during summer is definitely a place where you can meet a lot of great surfers and last summer I had the pleasure to surf close to Jeremy Flores. Looking at athletes so talented gives you a great energy and helps you improve your skills. Moreover I can practise with some guys from the Billabong Team such as Gaizka Housset.

And as a Billabong team rider, you went on a grom training trip to Portugal working with legendary surfer Richard 'Dog' Marsh. How did you find that experience? It' It's been 3 years now that I' I'm part of the Billabong Europe Grom Team and I' I'm very happy to have a coach like Richard 'Dog' Marsh, with a lot of experience, very good with us guys and very professional in his job. I' I'm happy to be part of the Billabong Project and every surf trip is always a good time for challenge and improvement. It' It's great to be able to share my passion with other guys like me.

No doubt though, your most exciting trip of 2015 must have been to the Maldives! So when and where was your best surf session of that trip then? Maldives was a unique experience. It was the first time I' I'd been to the Indian Ocean and we choose Cook Island where there are some of the best long waves and such clear water. The best session was in Cook, but I was ashamed of all the plastic bottles I saw on the beach. We really need to respect and preserve these places which we visit: the Nature there is just amazing! You've obviously travelled to and surfed some amazing spots around the world! So where's left? Where do you still want to travel to and surf? I think the world is full of wonderful places great for surfing, where the nature is unique and waves are perfect. I' I'd really like to go where you can find perfect tubes like Mentawaii and then I' I'd like to visit Australia.

So with the whole of 2016 ahead of you, what are your goals for the year to come? My goals are mainly to increase my technical skills and complete more and more hard maneuvers and maybe try something new. Maybe also start to participate in some Pro Junior competitions. Finally then, what about your future? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? The future is something you just can't imagine and to realize dreams you need to work hard, with passion, focus and drive. For now I will focus on growing to become a Billabong Pro Surfer, graduate with good grades and for the next 5 years, try to acquire more style, power and enjoyment in my surfing!

What first got you into surfing? My entire family life has revolved around the beach and ocean. It was only a matter of time before I got into surfing Who in surfing inspires you most? JJF with his awesome lifestyle, humble personality and mind-blowing progressive surfing and of course Kelly Slater for all he has done and achieved When and how did you become sponsored? I was 8 years old when Volcom picked me up. Got some good grom comp results so I guess Volcom must have seen something in me.

HotShots What do you prefer then, free surfing or competion and why? Comps are an important part of the journey for any aspiring pro surfer, but the pure fun, enjoyment and rush in freesurfing is hard to beat. Pulling into an 8’ slab is hard to beat. What moment are you most proud of in your surfing career so far? My first double page run by Volcom in a surfing mag. It was taken at the Verg….. and it was pumping What’s been the highlight of the last year for you? HAWAII. Going to Hawaii for the 1st time this past year was a definite highlight. Surfing at Pipe, Backdoor, OTW, Log Cabins, Haliewa and V Land was epic.

HotShots Where around the world have you been lucky enough to travel to and surf? I have surfed loads of spots here in OZ, but I have been lucky enough to surf in HAWAII and Indonesia as well. When has your best surf session been? A few months back I was luck enough to surf my favourite local spot with just 4 of my mates. 5ft, oily, inside-out barrels. It was crazy. What's the worst wipeout of your life? This happened at a place I call 'The Hole'. It's seriously a mini version of Pipe. I got pinched and held down and came up for half a breath only to get the next one on the head. Heavy. Lungbuster!!

Do you train as well as surf? I have actually gained a scholarship with the PULSE Healthgroup this year. My sessions are geared towards increasing core strength and stability with major focus on structural alignment. What do you do when you don't surf? Like most groms I have plenty to do when there is no surf. Lucky I live on the beach so I can go diving for fish, lobbys and abalone. I also love to go rock-hopping, ride my skateboard and of course watch movies or T.V. So what's your goal for this year? Travelling, surfing lots of different waves, finding barrels and making an epic clip of it all! And what about the future? In the future I am keen to be on the CT tour hopefully!

What first got you into surfing? My family; Mum, Dad and brothers. When I think about it, I didn’t really have a choice haha, I thought it was a normal part of growing up. So when and how did you become interested in shooting surfing? Four years ago I watched the first POV barrel footage I’d ever seen. It was part of the promo clip for the original gopro and it blew my mind. I saved my pennies and soon enough was shooting my own barrel POV. Who in surf photography inspires you most? Any of the guys that actually play a part in making the images they capture consistently special. Whether it’s a technical eye or positioning that requires a lack of self-preservation, it’s hard to create the moment in your own way. Russell Ord, Laurent Pujol, Luke Shadbolt, Ray Collins, Morgan Maassen, Brent Bielmann, Ben Thouard and Corey Wilson are all names that immediately come to mind.

Now last year was massive for you as you were one of the few surf photographers leading the way in the new revolution of shooting surfers by actually being behind them on the same wave. So how did that experience come about for you? After being mesmerised by Laurent Pujol and Mark Mathews double tow atempts I prety much adapted the concept to a local reef slab, with the help of a bunch of local surfers. I made myself take wipeout after wipeout until I knew we had pulled it of and could put together a collection of the images to showcase around the world.

And take the shot of Russel Bierke... how hard is it to nail that perfect shot? Too hard! Counting back it was around 200 wipeouts before I got that one shot ― just think about how many minutes that is spent underwater and how many times I hit the reef. I’m so grateful after all the hard work that moment came together like it did.

You've nailed a number of these style of shots with quite a few surfers now, both in the good light of a well lit day and with the help of a fash on a dawny. For you, which of these is the most satisfying?
The dawn/dark fash shots are really difcult because even more elements have to align to get a decent shot, so I guess they are more satisfying in that sense. Plus it’s scary as hell being on an outer reef in the dark, so looking back I can appreciate all the efort and risk that went into them.

You're also known for shooting in the water in massive surf too. So what's been the gnarliest session you've shot in? Geez I’m not too sure to be honest. Probably when we had a huge out of control swell at home right when I got my first water housing two years ago. It took me over an hour to jump in between sets and probably 45 minutes to get out the back. There were a few tow teams out at the reef earlier but by the time I was out there they had left and it was geting dark. Swimming in that rough ocean by myself was gnarly and probably out of my league at the time.

And out of all your shots, when and where would you say you've snapped your best shot so far? It’s got to be one of the double tow shots from that local reef. I look back through them all the time and can never pick a favourite, but so far in my opinion that’s been the pinnacle of my work.

So having achieved so much in 2015, what's your goal for this next year? There’s a lot in the works for 2016. I’m going to leave you guessing, but it’s bigger and beter than anything before! All I say is that I’ve been training for it for months!
And what about the future? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? Five to ten years is a long time ― I don’t like to think that far ahead. It’s not that I can’t imagine diferent, distant futures, but I’ve never expected to live long for some strange reason. I hope I’m surrounded by people I love, doing something that makes me feel alive.

If a classic wetsuit is what you want, then there's none more classic than the original wetsuit pioneers themselves, O'Neill. Founded in California in 1952, the young Jack O'Neill pioneered the world's first neoprene surf wetsuit, and so successfully found a way to extend his surf sessions in the bonechilling breaks of North California. While many things have changed since those humble beginnings, O'Neill's initial vision of producing functional and innovative board riding products still lives on in their current range of wetsuits, making them ideal for beating the worst that any winter session has to offer. We asked O'Neill rider, Jake Sage, always keen to surf whatever the weather, to test out the new zipless Hyperfreak 5/4 Comp alongside the Psycho One F.U.Z.E. 5/4 wetsuit and give us his surfer's eye review on these classic of all classic wetsuits! First up, O'Neill's all new zipless Hyperfreak Comp is your classic clean cut winter suit –it's really quite minimalistic with as few panels as possible and not many logos on it which makes it look quite smart and expensive, perfect for both contest performance and enjoying a winter's surf. The first thing that standouts about the Hyperfreak is how light it is especially for a 5/4 – this of course makes it very flexible as well! And of course being a classic O'Neill suit, the rest speaks for itself.

STYLE The style of the suit is very clean and simple – there's enough colour on the shoulder to stand out in the line up yet overall it's a classic darker suit so you don't draw too much attention to youself though the suit still has a look of expense and high quality both from afar and close up. The panels of the suit make it both look really clean but also function really well with no unnecessary seams.

FUNCTIONALITY The Hyperfreak is packed full of handy features including the zipless entry system – a must for suits going into 2016! This can also be tightened if needed though the key fact has to be that it doesn't flush at all! The knee pads are comfortable and the external key holder was in a handy place on the side of the shin.

Before testing the Hyperfreak Comp, my Psycho One had seen me through all of Autumn and the beginning of Winter, keeping me warm and toastie while stood up to my waist in the surf giving surf lessons. That said, when I then used the Hyperfreak, I was pleasantly surprised by the increased levels of comfort and flexibility...

COMFORT When the suit's on, as the Hyperfreak Comp has so few panels, it's really comfortable and stretchy – the zipless system is much more comfortable than other suits as you have no zip digging into your chest or back when you are paddling.
Made out of 100% Technobutter, the feel of the suit is silky smooth which makes it practically rub free and super comfy when you're out in the water. This really was my most comfortable suit I've ever worn!

STRETCHABILITY The Hyperfreak is so stretchy it's really easy to get on and off even with the neck entry which you would expect would make it slightly harder than normal. So with this as well as the Technobutter, minimum panels and it being really lightweight, you can see that O'Neill have made flexibility one of the key features of this suit!
SM - 136

137 - SM Jake grabbing every opportunity to push the limits of the Hyperfreak! Photo: Stu Gaston
HotWots
USABILITY Out in the water, the Hyperfreak is anything but restrictive, allowing you to push your turns harder without even noticing it's on! It's so flexible with less seams which means that you're free to push your surfing further without being held back by the suit at all. Better still, this flexibility of the suit makes moving in the suit so much easier meaning you don't get worn out as quickly so you can stay in the water longer and surf as much as you can muster.
SM - 138
DoubleO'Heaven
139 - SM Jake honing his skills in the comfort of the Hyperfreak! Photo: Stu Gaston
HotWots THE VERDICT I found the Hyperfreak super stretchy for a winter suit and actually too warm for when I tested it, so I can fully trust I will be toasty all the winter round even when the conditions get harsh. The style's really cool – simple but effective. So it's an all round winter suit, suitable for high performance in contests but also just a chilled surf whatever the weather with your mates and as it dries so quick you can just whack it on and off in between surfs and in the winter a dry, warm suit is key to getting two surfs a day instead of just the one!

TheGoss Four years ago, SURPHANG emerged as an idea for sharing the memory stick loads of shots that any surf photographer accumulates as they stand on many a beach snapping away to get that 'one' shot that might be considered magazine worthy. Having been working with a number of top UK Pro Junior surfers at that time and also fortunately having managed to snap the shot needed to get something published in each of the mags at the time, the huge number of unseen good quality images seemed such a waste to the talents of the surfers who had gone to such extraordinary lengths to make sure we got those published shots and so SURPHANG was born with top UK Pro Junior Champion of the day, Luis Eyre on the cover...
Just over 1000 people saw that first issue.... crazy to think that only 3 years later, just over 175,000 checked out the 36th issue with Jack Robinson on the cover. So as we approach our 4th anniversary, here's a quick look back at our journey so far...

So Issue 15th saw its first cover from father and son team Vince and Harry Timson; Issue 19 took viewing figures over 20,000 with UK talent Dale Foster flying onto the cover and then another top junior talent, Josh Burke from Barbados took his first cover on Issue 20, thanks to legendary surf photographer Joe Foster. And to top all that off, future ISA World Junior Champion, Leo Fioravanti took his first cover with Issue 22.

We had another epic string of covers this time of Kyle Imgraben for Issue 24 and then for our second anniversary issue, none other than John John Florence! But when the 26th Issue took to the cyber shelf, this barrel shot of Dylan Lightfoot took the mag to it's 30,000 viewer threshold for the first time! This was closely followed by it's new look with upcoming Portuguese talent, Pedro Coelho taking the cover...

Jack Robinson was on the cover thanks to this awesome shot from Oliver Emsallem and the perfect combination of this dynamic duo's hard work saw Issue 36 soar to 178,000 views! If this wasn't awesome enough, our highly supportive surf photographer from California, Chuck Schmidt took on an exclusive shoot with top UK talent Taz Knight and scored this epic shot at Blacks. The perfect cover if ever there was one, yet another dynamic duo took Issue 37 over 190,000 views. After 3 years hard work, it was more than satisfying to finally see SURPHANG get the recognition it truly deserved in Supporting Upcoming Rider Potential Here And Now Globally!
