Euro Rippers

'Business as usual!' Yes indeed, we've reached the business end of the year! That time when all across the globe the surfing contest scene moves up a gear and before you know it, every nation, each continent and ultimately the world will have crowned various new champions for this year, based on their ability to surf well (or at least better than their contenders) for an earth shattering twenty minutes. Cynical you might say and yes it is! So in this issue we once again shed the light on some of those champions who show that there's a lot more to it than just surfing better than the next guy! So sit back and enjoy as you spend the next twenty minutes in the company of some surfing stars of the future!

Jack Freestone flicks that tail high in the air.

Jack Freestone really came to the surfng world's attention in 2010 when he became the frst Australian since Joel Parkinson nine years earlier to take the prestigious title of ASP World Junior Champion. But it wasn't easy. Despite winning the frst event in Bali, Freestone faltered early at Narrabeen and so had an agonising wait to see how his rivals progressed. Fortunately, things went his way and points alone were enough for him to clinch the overall title. Still two years later, Freestone's had to keep his surfng on fre to stay ahead of the pack. So we caught up with him this summer to fnd out more about the trail blazer from down under.

SM - 06

Name:

Jack Freestone

Age: 20 years old Years surfng: 11 years Where you live: Currumbin, Gold Coast Local break/s: Snapper

What got you into surfng? My dad used to take me down after football every Sunday. Who in surfng inspires you most? I'm inspired by my mom. She's sort of like a hero to me. Surfng-wise, I really look up to Brent Dorrington and a few local guys at home.

More of Freestone's fiery aerial repertoire.

What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? Winning the Oakley Pro Junior in Bali two years ago. To me that was the best comp in my life, not only the fact of winning but it was the frst major comp my mom ever came to as well.

SM - 10

But what about the worse? Losing out early at Narrabeen was possibly the worst thing ever. Just running out for my last heat, I think it was a photographer was just like 'Hey, if you win this heat you're World Champion.' I was like, 'Oh, goodness.'

11 -

SM

Jack Freestone's awesome aerial expertise.

The Pro Show

SM - 12

The Pro Show Still you made it as World Champion! Did that have much of an impact on your life? I'm doing a lot more traveling actually. I'm a lot busier this year. I'm doing a bunch of the 'QSes and all the PRIMES and stuff. You've had some good results in those too! So what's your plan for the rest of the year? I'm just going to fnish off the year doing the 'QSes and stuff. Hopefully, try and get my seed for next year. And then, do World Juniors again and hopefully do good in that. And just try and enjoy myself.

More aerial antics from Mr Freestone.

The Pro Show So now you're heading back to Bali and the Oakley Pro Junior two years later, preparing to go through it all again, how's that make you feel? I don't know. I don't really feel...I try not to think of the pressure. Being a previous champion, it'd be pretty cool to try and back it up but I'm just trying not to think about that right now, just focusing on surfng my best. What do you do when you don't surf then? What do I do? I usually just do nothing. I just enjoy doing nothing. Hanging out. I don't know. Hanging out with friends. Doing different stuff like playing basketball or something like that. I'm really into that.

SM - 16

The Pro Show Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? Five years...hopefully I see myself on the Tour, doing good. Five years...that's a hard question. Yeah, on the Tour. That's where everyone is trying to be -- be World Champ and be on the Tour.

Champ Chats Cloarec Clinches It! Words and photos: stu gaston

Two Thousand and Twelve has been a pretty epic year for you so far, and of course fnally becoming the European Junior Champion must be one of the highlights. But have there been any other memorable moments frst though? The frst one was the World Junior Championships in Panama with the French team! When we won the Tag team World title, it was an amazing day! All the French surfers were surfng so well in that fnal!! The second one was in June during a small contest in Mimizan, the waves were perfect, long rights, some barrels, turns. I fnished 2nd, behind Vincent Duvignac, so I was happy!

19 -

SM

Tom Cloarec giving another display of his talent.

Tom Cloarec European Junior Champion 2012

Becoming the European Junior Champ has been one of your goals for a while. This year has seen you getting some great results and now this win. Talk us through the contest and how it went? Well four years ago, I won the European title in Under 14 against Vasco, I was so happy! Then when we came to the Under 16, Vasco won it. So this year, for my last year in Junior French team, I wanted to win this one! All the French team was amazing in Lacanau, so many good vibes between the surfers. I think that they helped me a lot during the contest! And in the Final, I felt so good, catching so many waves, doing airs. My brother, Nelson helped me a lot to be confdent at this point! So really it was thanks to him and all the French team!

SM - 20

How did you feel when you realised you had actually made it as champion then? I didn't realize straight after the fnal. Everybody was so happy, congratulating my brother and me. I just said thanks, but it was only a few hours after I thought "I made it, yes!!!" You had to overcome some solid surfng from your European contenders? How do you rate your surfng peers over in Europe at the moment? Yeah, the level in Europe is growing between every contest! There is Vasco, Nelson, Miguel, Natxo, Imanol. So many good surfers! When you are against them, you need to show your best surf!!!

21 -

SM

Tom Cloarec releases those fins clear of the water on his backhand.

CHAMP CHATS

SM - 22

CHAMP CHATS

You've been surfng against and known these guys most of your competitive life – one of them was even your own brother! So how does this affect the way you surf in a heat? Nelson acutally helps me a lot in each heat! We are brothers, so when he or I need a score, we try to help each other out. It's a good thing! So during the contest, which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? I think it was Vasco, because he's surfng so good and he is a very good competitor. But in the fnal, it was different, we were 2 against him, Nelson and I! That's what made the difference! And now you're champion, does that go down as your best victory to date? Yes for sure! So now you've made it as champ, what's next? What are your goals for the rest of this year? The next comp is the French Championships in October! So I will be training for that to show my best surf during the contest!

23 -

SM

Tom clinches some tube time too.

SM - 24

And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? For training, I'm surfng every day (if there are waves!!) trying to improve my surf in each session. Furthermore with Nelson, we're training together so it's easier to stay motivated working in all conditions to try some new moves, airs or to shoot. We like to correct each other's surf and to help each other to make progress (I'm not touchy !!) We also cycle, skip and stretch too!

25 -

SM

Tom all so likes to grab a bit of air time when he can as well!

CHAMP CHATS

SM - 26

CHAMP CHATS Now you're from France and you live in Hossegor with some of the best waves that Europe has to offer on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling? I think that France is the best place in the world in September and October, so we are staying at home during these months to enjoy the good waves ! We (Nelson, a friend and I) maybe go to Mexico in November and in the beginning of December – that should be good! After that, we will see what happens!! Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? I hope to see myself in the WQS or more but we don't know what happens in life so we will see you back in 5 years to fnd out how I'm doing!

27 -

SM

Tom aiming high as ever.

Take a Punt in Portugal Words and photos: stu gaston

31 -

SM

Pedro Correia punts his luck at Guincho, Portugal.

surphangaway Well the surf's not been up to much over here in the UK so far this year. Apart from a couple of good weeks back in Spring, Summer was rubbish and the usual Autumn season of Atlantic swells has been down right disappointing. Still don't give up all hope yet as there's still time to squeeze in a quick trip to somewhere hot, sunny and where the waves have indeed been pumping! Plus it's not a million miles away! Yes it might be worth taking a punt on a quick trip over to Portugal, the most consistant country for swell in Europe.

SM - 32

surphangaway As well as being a swell magnet, Portugal has waves on almost all its coastline so there's plenty of spots to chose from. But if it's ease your after, then just pop over to the capital, Lisbon and you'll find yourself right in the centre of any action going.

33 -

SM

Pedro on a puntfest at Guincho.

Guincho

Diogo Appleton gets some air time at Guincho.

SM - 34

Guincho If the Atlantic is co-operating and sending in some decent Autumn swells, then there is the entire range of breaks to chose from that will match the conditions. On a gentle pulsing swell, Guincho is the ideal beach break, especially as it offers some shelter from any southerly cross winds. With both lefts and rights up and down the beach, there's plenty for everyone and some nice sections.

35 -

SM

Pedro Correia carries on punting while the world passes by.

Caxias But when that big autumnal swell hits, then further round the coast on the wide estuary lies the small beach break of Caxias where the breakwater creates a wedgy left, perfect for punting!

surphangaway

SM - 60

surphangaway Once again, there's lefts and rights for all but it does get busy at weekends being so close to the capital. But hit it midweek and you can score anything from pumping barrels to perfect punt sections.

61 -

SM

Pedro Correia proving how puntable Portugal can be.

Carcavelos So with all this on offer and just a short drive from the airport, you'd be a fool not to take a punt and pop over to Portugal for the chance of a few days of sun and surf. Plus you never know, if you have chance to head on a two hour drive northwards, then you might even be lucky enough to bump into Gabriel, John John or even King Kelly himself – surely it's worth it just for that!

Fab Five The euros Words and photos: stu gaston

28.10.09 British surfer, Luis Eyre and his family moved to Portugal when he was younger. Many years later they invited me over to tell his story and so this was the frst shot of a shoot that was to be the foundations of SURPHANG itself!

63 -

SM

Those fab five years really got going with the purchase of a digital SLR in October 2007. After 2 years of subjecting it to the best that the UK had to offer, it was time in October 2009 to treat the trusty camera to a trip abroad. So where better than the most consistent stretch of coast for swell in mainland Europe, none other than Portugal! With this began a new series of shoots with the 'Euros', resulting in some seriously good shots!

Despite injury earlier this year, Davey Cathels was back on form at Lacanau.

Last year, Bali was the frst in a series of events to determine the World Pro Junior Champions and with Cathels leading after his win he look set to take the title. But an injury soon after took him out of contention, leaving the way clear for Brazilian, Caio Ibelli to become Champion. Many months out of the water meant that Davey Cathels couldn't gain the contest wins he needed to earn his place to return this year but Ibelli will be back along with some other old faces and many new ones too.
