SURREY — The City of Surrey is spending $9 million to replace all of the copper wire in its streetlight system with alloy wire. At Monday’s council meeting, Surrey’s engineering department proposed an overhaul of the city’s streetlight system to deter wire theft, which has cost the city about $3.5 million in repair costs over the last two years. “Although the rate of loss has been declining from previous years, copper wire theft appears to be linked to the price of copper as a commodity and thus it is expected that copper wire theft will increase again as copper prices rise,” read a corporate report that went before council.

SURREY — Town centres like Newton, Fleetwood and Cloverdale may soon look a bit different, following the city’s reevaluation of their respective community plans. On Monday, Surrey city council approved recommendations in a corporate report to review and update each of the city’s town centre plans between now and 2016, with Newton, Fleetwood Bruce Hayne and Cloverdale to be considered first. A second phase of the review is proposed to complete the Semiahmoo plan and develop a new plan for Guildford. Coun. Bruce Hayne stated that the review of the plans has been top of mind for the city. “This is important work that we’re going to be doing this year and I think it’s time that we did it,” Hayne said. see TOWN CENTRE › page 3

Switching to alloy wire ‘a proactive step’ WHAT DO YOU THINK? SEND LETTERS WITH

According to city staff, Surrey’s wire theft task force – with the help of Surrey RCMP, utility companies and the provincial government – is likely responsible for a portion of the drop in wire theft, referencing increased enforcement, the installation of security devices on street poles and other crime-reduction efforts. However, staff recognized that stronger measures have to be taken to better ensure the prevention of wire theft. Alloy, which is made up of two or more metals, has a lower salvage value – roughly 10 per cent of the value of copper on a weight basis – making it less enticing to thieves. As well, alloy is difficult to recycle due to the insulation around it. In 2012, staff conducted a wire replacement study to determine if alloy was a suitable alternative to copper. Initial concerns over lower conductivity, wire

Copper wire theft has cost the city $3.5 million over the past two years. (File photo) size and difficulty with connections were resolved and alloy was proven to be a cost effective and viable conductor. As part of a pilot project last year, the city replaced copper wire in three locations in the city that were known to be troublesome areas for copper theft. According to staff, there has not been any wire theft in those areas. Coun. Judy Villeneuve commended city staff for being a leader in the alloy wire shift

and noted the benefits of the replacement. “We’ll avoid a lot more blackouts and issues that people face because of electrical wiring,” she said, noting that some parts of Surrey may be overdue for an upgrade in their electrical grids. “I think in many older areas, it’s timely that it’s being done anyway, but I really think it’s a proactive step to be taken.” Coun. Bruce Hayne added that by switching the wiring now, the city is

preparing for future technological development in the streetlight system. “My understanding is this is also going to make all our street lighting LED-ready when the cost of LED becomes attractive. We really are looking down the road.” The city will consider one contractor to undertake the replacement of Surrey’s streetlight system, which is estimated to take a year to complete with a net cost of about $9 million after subtracting the value of the existing copper wire. Staff noted that funding for the project is available in the Roads 10-Year Financial Plan. “Based on current and historical wire theft rates and costs, within eight years of the wire replacement, this investment will have been offset by the avoided repair costs for wire theft,” read the report. The city has narrowed down the qualified contractors to Cobra Electric Ltd., Crown Contracting Ltd., EPCOR Technologies Inc., Trans-Western Electric Ltd., Houle Electric Limited and Bay Hill Contracting Ltd. Following presentations from the qualified companies in March, city staff will prepare a report with recommendations regarding the award of a contract, expected to reach council in April.

Town centre plans getting tweaked in face of change

‹ from page 1

The city’s town centres review aims to enhance public safety, develop vibrant commercial and cultural centres, beautify neighbourhoods and reduce greenhouse gas emissions – all objectives of the city’s sustainability charter. According to city staff, provisions from the Newton Town Centre plan haven’t been fully implemented. The 10-page document specifically references undeveloped properties south of 72nd Avenue that have remained stagnant since the plan was approved in 1990.

More development has been executed from Fleetwood and Cloverdale’s plans, both approved in 2000, but the town centre at Fraser Highway and 160th Street has not been redeveloped as expected, and a number of significant changes in Cloverdale have not been updated in the current strategy. “Many of Surrey’s town centre plans are dated, and do not reflect current policy directions including rapid transit plans,” reads one line from the document, stressing the importance of creating a strong transit network between the communities. The report references a joint transit study

by the city and TransLink that identifies King George Boulevard, Fraser Highway as rapid transit corridors, taking into account the challenges with light rail transit (LRT), which Mayor Dianne Watts has pushed for. “Surrey’s clear advocacy for light rail requires a commitment to planning for sufficient density in town centres and urban design policies that facilitate pedestrian connections to transit infrastructure.” The corporate report added that emphasizing town centre development supports the Metro Vancouver Regional Growth Strategy, which sets a target of 40 per cent of all regional population and

employment growth in urban centres. Residents from Newton, Fleetwood and Cloverdale will be able to provide input regarding the proposed town centre plans at open houses, all scheduled to take place in April and November. The city will also consult with local stakeholders, including business groups, community associations, non-profit agencies, advisory committees, chambers of commerce and historical societies. Citizens may also submit feedback through Surrey’s CitySpeaks response form at cityspeaks.ca. jzinn@thenownewspaper.com

Jail isn’t answer for chronic offenders, police chief says Jessica Kerr

Delta Optimist

DELTA — The justice system is doing nothing to help deal with chronic offenders, says Delta’s police chief, and building more jails isn’t going to improve the situation. “We don’t think we need more jails,” said Chief Jim Cessford, adding he would like to see that money used to restructure the system to better help people with mental health and addiction issues. About 45 per cent of all calls Delta police officers respond to involve a person with a mental health issue, prompting the department to make some changes to address the growing problem. In 2008, the department partnered with Delta Mental Health to establish the Community Health Intervention Program, formalizing an already strong working relationship between the two agencies and developing an outreach service that sees a dedicated police officer regularly liaise with a mental health staff member. Initially the program was expected to deal with 10 to 15 high-risk individuals a year, but in 2008 the officer saw 685 files, a number that grew to more than 800 last year. Cessford said the department just added a second officer to the unit to deal with the increasing workload. While police deal with many offenders only once, or a handful of times, there are others who come into contact with officers regularly, even hundreds of times, and there is a direct link between chronic offenders and substance abuse or mental health disorders. “The issue of chronic offenders and the correlation to substance abuse and mental health disorders is complex,” Cessford said in a recent report to the Delta police board. At any give time, Delta police officers are dealing with between 10 and 20 chronic offenders, a situation that puts a strain on police resources. Many chronic offenders get caught in a

cycle of minor crime – stealing from cars and other property offences – to support their addiction. Once caught by police, most will spend just a few weeks or months in jail – not long enough to get Jim Cessford any sort of treatment, Cessford said – before being released back onto the streets where the cycle begins again. Cessford said many chronic offenders are simply falling through the cracks of the system, unable to get treatment for their addiction because of their mental health issues and vice versa. “There’s a real disconnect here,” he said. “They don’t need to be in jail.” Cessford said there needs to be a change in how the justice system deals with chronic offenders because as it stands, the current one isn’t working. “We’ve named the elephant in the room – that elephant is jails don’t work.” The chief points to Texas as an example of how making changes to the system can work. Instead of building more jails, the state put money into probation strategies that focused on evidence-based supervision and treatment, with the aim of reducing recidivism and, ultimately, the number of prisoners in prisons. Cessford said he would like to see a system where chronic offenders dealing with mental health and/or addiction issues are more often sentenced to treatment or daily counseling than jail time. While the idea started here in Delta, the chief has plans to see it move forward. His report will first be taken to the B.C. Association of Police Boards and the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police in the hopes it will be passed on to the national associations.

Teachers to hold strike vote Christopher Poon

Now staff Twitter @questionchris

METRO VANCOUVER — Two weeks after leaked documents suggested the province had tried to provoke teachers into striking in 2012, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation announced it would hold a strike vote in March. BCTF president Jim Iker made the announcement Tuesday morning after explaining how unsuccessful the latest rounds of bargaining had been. “Bargaining is about moving forward not backwards, with new players at the table, there was hope we could move on from the last round of bargaining. That hope has turned into frustrations for months now – behind closed doors, the government has been unreasonable, unfair and provocative,” said Iker. Iker went on to accuse the government of being determined to drive the province’s school system into chaos to serve their own political needs and ignoring the most recent

ruling that found the B.C. government had broken the law when then-Education Minister Christy Clark stripped bargaining rights in 2002. As such, Iker said a strike vote will be held on March 4 and 5 and if the majority votes in favour, some sort of action is to be taken within 90 days of said vote. Iker noted that action would not affect report cards, school closures or lessening of extracurricular activities at this time. Many of the concerns stem from the province’s desire to secure a 10-year labour agreement, which the BCTF has been strongly opposed to. Education Minister and SurreyFleetwood MLA Peter Fassbender said he was disappointed by the BCTF’s announcement. “I have constantly said our goal as government is to stay at the table, to find a negotiated settlement, to resolve the issues at the table, so for me this is very provocative so far as our process in bargaining goes,” Fassbender said.

Students, staff mourn slain teacher

Brother charged with murder in death of North Surrey Secondary teacher Maja Paderewska SURREY — The brother of a slain Surrey school teacher has been charged with second-degree murder in her death. Jarek Paderewski, 27, of Coquitlam, is charged in the death of his sister, Maja Paderewska, 33. Paderewska was a business and economics teacher at North Surrey Secondary school. The suspect made his first appearance in court Monday and was held for a Maja Paderewska further date. Surrey school district spokesman Doug Strachan said students and staff at North Surrey Secondary were remembering Paderewska and a memorial had been set up in the school Tuesday morning. Sgt. Adam MacIntosh with IHIT said investigators are still trying to determine the motive for the murder and are looking at a number of considerations, including whether mental illness played a role. “These types of crimes ... don’t happen very often,” he said, noting the courts will ultimately decide whether mental illness was a factor in the murder. Emergency crews were called to the home, in a Coquitlam townhouse complex at 2951

Students and staff at North Surrey Secondary school set up a memorial in the school Tuesday morning to remember their slain teacher Maja Paderewska. Panorama Dr., around 3 p.m. Sunday for a person in medical distress. When crews arrived, they found the body of a woman inside the home. A man was arrested at the scene. IHIT said the 27-year-old lived there with his parents, who were not home at the time. The victim did not live in the townhouse. IHIT also said police did not know Jarek Paderewski. Investigators wouldn’t disclose a possible murder weapon, but MacIntosh indicated police have an idea of what occurred in the home. Investigators were still on scene Monday canvassing the complex for witnesses. For residents living in the townhouse complex, word of the murder and the sight of police tape in their quiet neighbourhood was a surprise. Maureen St. Louis has been living in the complex for eight years and was stunned to learn about the murder. She said she never spoke with, or saw, the people who lived in Unit 11, where the incident took place, and wasn’t home at the time.

City of surrey WAT E R M A I N F L U S H I N G As part of the city’s maintenance program, the flushing of the watermains in the areas located between 56th Avenue & 80th Avenue & 120 Street to 152 Street will occur from Jan. 31, 2014 to May 31, 2014. Flushing of watermains is required to remove sediments and to maintain water quality. This may result in your water supply appearing cloudy due to the sediments. Since some staining of laundry may result and some industrial processes may be affected, we recommend the following.

St. Louis said many people stick to themselves in the complex. “It’s such a quiet complex. Everyone hides behind their garage doors,” St. Louis said. While she’s not concerned for her safety, she does want to know what happened at the home. Gail Decker moved into the complex about a year ago, and lives a few doors down from the murder scene. She also wasn’t home at the time of the incident, but did come home to find fire trucks and police cars right in front of her door. Decker had seen the couple living at the home a few times, describing them as middle-aged and possibly Eastern European, but never had the chance to speak to them. She had planned to be friendlier with her neighbours this summer. Decker also described the complex as “quiet” and to a lesser extent was surprised to hear about the murder. “You know, it can happen anywhere.” Jeremy Deutsch, Glacier Media With files from Christopher Poon

WHITE ROCK – Anyone wanting to grow or distribute medical marijuana in White Rock is out of luck. Ahead of expected changes on the federal level to medicinal marijuana growing operations, White Rock council on Monday effectively banned any production or distribution of the drug under any type of zoning in the city. The move came just one month after a delegation of medicinal marijuana advocates approached council about backing local users. At that time, David Hutchinson implored council to back local users by requesting support from other levels of government. Hutchinson, who lives in South Surrey, became an advocate for medical marijuana when his teenaged daughter, Beth, began using it to treat her pain after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. While Beth passed away this past fall, Hutchinson has continued to advocate on her behalf.

“We need more understanding in the community and I ask you to support the patients in your district,” said Hutchinson to council at the time. Joy Davies urged council to strike down the prohibiting bylaw prior to their vote Monday night. Noting concerns over fire hazards or criminal elements were negligible at best, Davies argued the bylaw would only make it more difficult for patients to access the drug. “This is not progressive and this is not protecting those with ill health,” she said. “Last year 1,500 people died from Tylenol and every nine minutes somebody dies from pharmaceuticals. This time we ask you do nothing on zoning because we need large corporate medical marijuana growers. As a taxpayer and citizen of White Rock, don’t see us as part of the problem, we want to be part of the solution.” Following Davies’ comments, council voted unanimously to pass the bylaw, which was part of a set of omnibus bylaw zoning amendments. cpoon@thenownewspaper.com

Surrey gets tougher with nuisance properties SURREY — Property owners who have received more than three nuisance calls in the last year will soon face pricey tickets and be financially responsible for being a drain on city resources. On Monday, Surrey city council authorized staff to amend the city’s nuisance and ticketing bylaws to allow officers to fine troublesome properties and force owners to recover expenses associated with repeat nuisance calls. The report notes an increase in nuisance-related calls, most being repeat visits to a small number of properties. “The nuisance bylaw currently allows for a $10,000 fine plus the costs of prosecution for each violation under the bylaw,” read the report. “Offences related to the nuisance bylaw must be enforced by means of long form charges through the court, which is a fairly time-consuming and costly process.” The option of issuing charges through the court system will remain for circumstances that warrant it, but Coun. Barinder Rasode

said it is important to provide officers with a more proactive method of recovering costs. “We’re very aggressive where we can be, but often times, the courts cause such delays, so I’m really happy to see that this takes us closer in dealing within our own realm in a stronger fashion,” she said. In addition to the $10,000 fine, bylaw officers will be able to issue $250 tickets per offence. The city may also impose a fee for future responses to service calls for nuisance properties that have received more than three calls in a 12-month period. Before taxes, the minimum cost for a nuisance service call response from the city is $682, and the minimum administrative and overhead fee is $364. Staff also clarified that the costs of dispatching police officers and fire fighters to properties will be included in the recovery costs. The corporate report listed dozens of attributes that fall under the definition of nuisance, including excessive noise, noxious odours, graffiti, unsanitary conditions, plant overgrowth and offensive business activity.

arewell Russ Hiebert; wish I could say it was nice knowing you. A decade of “public service” sounds impressive on paper, until you view the impact his work had on the community he served. The list of Hiebert’s accomplishments reads as follows:

That about covers it. Actually, that’s not fair. In 10 years (and counting) of service as the elected Member of Parliament for South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale, Hiebert established himself as the poster boy of everything that’s wrong with our

electoral system as it exists today. Rather than represent the people in his riding, Hiebert represented Ottawa to his riding. Hiebert parachuted in from Manitoba and stacked a meeting to nab the Conservative nomination away from an actual hard working MP, Val Meredith. Once elected, he was the beneficiary of a new Conservative Party rule that guaranteed the renomination of sitting MPs. In one of the Conservative Party’s safest seats in British Columbia, it would take a massive screw up on Hiebert’s part to lose the seat. He solved that problem by not doing anything of note and avoiding contact with the media whenever possible. But even by doing nothing, Hiebert managed to find his share of trouble. He liked to sign his name to the giant presentation cheques handed out in the community, giving the appearance of personal largesse on his part when in fact it was government money being distributed. He bombarded residents in his riding with inane mailouts filled with information that insulted

the intelligence of anyone foolish enough to attempt to read them. (Sample question: Who do you think is tougher on crime: a – Stephen Harper; b – Michael Ignatieff; or c – Jack Layton? As if residents were actually expected to fill out such vapid queries attached to boilerplate Conservative propaganda.) In a Conservative caucus so utterly devoid of talent that Prime Minister Harper repeatedly opts to recycle his cabinet ministers rather than take a flyer on someone from among the bobbleheaded masses on the backbenches, Hiebert didn’t stand out from the crowd. He never got the call to join the PM’s inner circle despite holding one of the safest Conservative seats in the West. He was a bobblehead

to the end. Sorry, once again not true. The high point of Hiebert’s career as an MP came in 2010 when it was revealed he was the biggestspending MP in all of B.C. for the 2008-09 fiscal year. Not only that, Hiebert’s expenses totalled $637,093 – the second highest of all MPs in the country. (The average was roughly $200,000.) And what was all that money spent on? The glossy boilerplate mailouts were part of it, but those costs were overshadowed by Hiebert’s penchant for purchasing first-class plane tickets for himself and his family whenever they travelled to and from Ottawa. When he finally mustered a response to the public’s outrage, Hiebert smugly

stated that his expenses were “the price of democracy.” So now, after four terms in office and a fat pension package in his back pocket, Hiebert has announced he is stepping down. In keeping with his tradition of open communications with the community, he did not return phone calls from the Now to comment on his decision. ❚ Monorail in North Surrey? Surrey residents are so egregiously served by public transit that city officials are willing to listen to any proposal that crosses their desks. Last week, Surrey transportation committee heard a presentation from a company that wants to build a monorail along 104th Avenue linking Whalley

with Guildford. So it’s come to this has it? Crappy bus service, rising bridge tolls and extremely limited SkyTrain access for Surrey commuters has pushed us to the point where we seriously consider fairground rides as a solution to the problem. Why not build a rollercoaster-style of transportation system just to keep things interesting for commuters? It must be cheaper than the other options because the rails are so much smaller. Throw in a couple of loop-de-loops on the route and people won’t mind paying a couple of bucks extra to cover the costs. Michael Booth can be reached at mbooth@ thenownewspaper.com

Salting roads just another example of waste in Surrey The Editor, Why are they salting Surrey’s streets for no apparent reason? The roads are dry and the money they waste by doing this could be used to pave roads that are in dire need of paving. Just because they have a budget to spend this money doesn’t mean they have to if it’s not necessary. I don’t need my driveway, boulevard or plants salted like they did the other day. And don’t even get me started on our expensive new, unnecessary city hall in an area that is not Surrey’s centre. Dave Plett, Surrey

Our transit system is weird but I wouldn’t live elsewhere The Editor, Re: “TransLink must be kept single system,” the Now letters, Feb. 25. Why stop at pay-per-use roads when we can make everyone wear pedometers and charge for distances walked on the sidewalk? And why not add to that a reader that charges a toll whenever a road is crossed? The way I see it – compared to other places I’ve been to and lived in – transit riders already pay a toll for travelling between zones. For example, if I get on the SkyTrain at Scott Road and get off at Columbia Street station – the distance of one stop – I have to pay a two-zone fair to avoid a fine, hence I am actually paying a toll to cross the bridge. The same applies if I were to get on the last stop in Burnaby, near the boundary and get off at the first stop in Vancouver. Or taking a single bus ride of only a few stops from New Westminster into Coquitlam – again you pay a toll to go from city to city (or really from city to suburb). Back in Hamilton, Ont., I could get on a city bus and, using a transfer, get about three cities away on a single fare and Hamilton Street Railway does nothing to collect all the road taxes they do out here. Don’t get me wrong – with all our faults, I still very much like it out here and have never even gone back for a visit and don’t intend to either – the benefits here far outweigh the downsides. Scott Thackeray, Surrey

Stop talking about permit parking and just get it done Re: “Surrey may issue parking permits for jam-packed areas with suites,” the Now, Feb. 18. I am curious – what came of the permit parking that Coun. Barinder Rasode talked about in the Now two weeks ago? All I heard was a lot of talk. Where is the action? The Now’s city hall reporter did not hear about it at the last transportation meeting a few weeks ago either. Please fill us in! What is the permit parking pilot about or the garage project? If you want to test out a “permit parking pilot” or “garage project,” please come to my street in East Clayton and I will happily install my own permit parking sign and paint my own lines in front of my home on my dime and get the ball rolling. Let’s stop talking about it and get it done. Crystal Litonjua, Surrey

rotten tomatoes to the City of Surrey’s parking enforcement. The other day we witnessed you ticketing people’s vehicles that had obviously not moved since the snow storm in East Clayton (over 72 hours). Did you ever stop to think that possibly the people you were ticketing have three vehicles, have no suite, their twocar garage has two cars in it and they are parked in front of their own home? Give me a break! Worry about the suite tenants that should be parked on owners’ lots! Time for permit parking! rotten tomatoes to sore throats! sweet-smelling roses to all those education assistants out there who are working with school children who need extra help. roses to the City of Surrey for their great handling of the recent snow. The streets were always kept clear and commuting in the wintery weather was a breeze. rotten tomatoes to the inconsiderate people who continually walk their dogs and take shortcuts through our townhouse complex. This is private property. Stop it. rotten tomatoes to our landlord. He refuses to have a caretaker live at the property – more money from renting out that one suite – and also can’t be bothered to come by and do basic maintenance on the ageing building. Or hire someone else to do it either. On stage

‘Stunt magician’ honed skills at lunch hour “Everything I do onstage has a magic twist to it, and it’s dangerous and funny all the way through,” says Surrey resident Wes Barker, who brings his comedy-filled magic show to Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre on Saturday, March 8.

The last time we saw Wes Barker, he was in his underwear. “It was a great experience,” the Surrey resident said about his experience last fall on the Exposed! show aired on The Comedy Network. Barker was a top-five finalist in the talent contest, in which contestants had to submit a video clip of them performing a stunt in nothing more than their underwear. The prize was $5,000 cash and a chance to develop a pilot for the TV channel. Barker, 27, didn’t win the cash prize that December day, but that week he was excited to announce a headlining show at Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre, booked for Saturday, March 8. On stage, Barker mixes magic and comedy for his “stunt magician” show, filled with audience-participation bits. “I definitely use the ‘stunt magician’ thing right off the top, to describe what I do, just so people don’t confuse me with a guy who pulls a rabbit out of a hat,” explained the Langley-raised Barker, who now lives in the Clayton Heights area. “I’m not tossing doves out of my sleeves and throwing fireballs in the air – well, maybe a fireball here and there. But I wanted something that was my own thing.” On the day the Now called Barker, he spent the morning throwing a tomahawk into a tree, for practice. “I have a new trick that involves a tomahawk, a blindfold and a cellphone, and that’s not typically a magician-like trick, it’s just a stunt I’ve come up with, one with a magic kicker,” Barker revealed. “Everything I do onstage has a magic twist to it, and it’s

dangerous and funny all the way through. It’s a bit hard to explain and, really, I always struggle to find a good description for what I do.” Barker honed his magic skills while working for the City of Surrey in his early 20s, between time spent studying business administration at university. “I did lots of jobs for them – water meters, watermains, weedeating on the roads and drainage,” he said. “You take your lunch breaks in your truck, because there’s nowhere to go and everyone just packs a lunch, and you have your half-hour lunch

and two 10-minute coffees. So there’s 50 minutes a day where you’re just sitting in your truck with nothing to do, so I just brought books with me, on magic, and on my breaks I’d practise magic tricks. Every partner I had thought it was hilarious that I had this library of books in the truck, and during every break I’d pull out cards, coins and whatnot. Kind of weird.” In 2011, he was a finalist on CTV’s Canada’s Got Talent, although he didn’t make it to the televised portion of the show. “I’d turn on the TV and see their 30second promo, and I was the big finish in

all those commercials,” Barker recalled. “I thought that was a good sign, but ultimately, based on the nature of my show, the kind of tricks I do, they toe that line between appropriate and inappropriate, you know? But really, I toe that line great, and I do high school shows all the time without a problem, but when it’s on TV they (the producers) really make sure not to offend anybody and get really nervous. So they said to me, ‘We’ll get you on next year with some different tricks, to make it more for TV,’ but then that second season (of Canada’s Got Talent) never happened. They shouldn’t be so conservative next time.” Just back from a two-week tour of Australia, Barker is stoked to perform at a theatre the size of the Vogue, which has room for around 1,200 paying customers. “At the Rio, which seats about 450, they were understaffed that night and weren’t really ready for the flood of people who came for a one-man show, so we’ll see what happens at the Vogue,” he said. “I’m lucky to have a good following of people who like my show, I guess.” Looking ahead, Barker has his sights set on scoring a TV show. “I’m starting to figure out more about TV, and I’m doing a YouTube video of the week kind of thing,” he said. “It’s coming to the point where I think it’s not a matter of if TV happens for me, it’s a matter of when. I’ve just hit a really big creative stride right now, coming up with a whole bunch of unique stuff that I think people will enjoy.” Tickets for Barker’s March 8 performance are $20 via northerntickets.com and 604569-1144. When Peninsula Productions was set to stage its version of Death and the Maiden last fall, the show’s run was postponed by a death in the family of Wendy Bollard, director of the political thriller. With Bollard in Ireland for a funeral, the five November show dates at Semiahmoo Arts’ studio, at Centennial Park in White Rock, had to be scrubbed. Fortunately, Bollard was able to again secure the services of the three actors

– Lori Tych, Guy Fauchon and Ben Odberg – for a delayed staging of the play, this time from March 5 to 8 at the larger, more comfortable Coast Capital Playhouse. “We all went through a hard time together, and it’s worked to make this group even more cohesive,” Bollard said with enthusiasm. “I was so delighted to get them together again for these dates,” she continued. “They were all enjoying it so much – but I hesitate to use the word ‘enjoying’ with this play, because the subject matter is so brutal and intense. But in their actor way, they were all enjoying it, so they all wanted to do it, and they all made their schedules available so that could happen, and it’s pretty awesome. That speaks to the show itself, I think.” Ariel Dorfman’s Death and the Maiden tells the story of Paulina Salas (played by Lori Tych), a married

woman who was raped and tortured by a doctor while being held as a political prisoner in Chile. Years later, she meets a man she suspects to be her abuser, Dr. Roberto Miranda (Guy Fauchon), but her husband Gerardo (Ben Odberg) is not convinced of the doctor’s guilt, and acts as his lawyer. “I come out of rehearsal walking on air, even though the subject matter is quite brutal and can be tough to watch,” Bollard said. “I always bring chocolate to rehearsal, because everybody needs a little pick-me-up afterward, some sweetness. It’s some pretty heavy subject matter, violence, and at every single rehearsal, these guys bring it.” Show tickets are $23 for adults and $18 for students/seniors, via 604-5367535 and www.peninsulaproductions. org. The theatre is located at 1532 Johnston Rd., White Rock.

he good news is that local blues-roots musician/actor Jim Byrnes has a show booked at Blue Frog Studios in White Rock for Friday, March 14. The bad news is that tickets for the concert sold out in about seven hours. “Only the folks on our email list got a crack at tickets,” studio boss Kelly Breaks told me. Elsewhere, Byrnes is due to also perform Friday, April 11 at Cascades Casino Jim Byrnes Resort in Langley, with Babe Gurr opening. Blue Frog will be hopping in March and April with several concerts, including a Mardi Gras-flavoured show by Gary Comeau & the Voodoo Allstars (March 8), a St. Patrick’s Day party with Pat Chessell Band (March 15), Celtic fun with South Surrey-based fiddler Kiérah Raymond, accordionist/pianist Adrian Dolan and guitar player Adam Dobres (March 21), Dreams (a tribute to Fleetwood Mac, March 22), Tiller’s Folly (March 29), Stonebolt (April 4) and “Jump!” (the Diane Lines-led jump blues/swing revue show, April 11). The shows by Raymond, Chessell and Tiller’s Folly at Blue Frog are part of the month-long Irish Festival in White Rock. A number of music-oriented venues are part of the celebrations in March, including Jimmy Flynn’s Celtic Snug, Sandpiper Pub, Ceili’s, Sawbucks, White Rock Elks Lounge and more. A detailed calendar of festival events – more than 40 of them, including music, poetry, dancing, food and beverage tastings – can be downloaded from www. InWhiteRock.com. The fest kicks off Saturday evening (March 1) at Semiahmoo Arts’ studio in Centennial Park with a tribute to the music and words of Van Morrison, as performed by Speakeasy Music Trio (both acoustic and electric). Admission is by a $15 suggested donation in support of the food bank. At the Semiahmoo Arts space, at 14600 North Bluff Rd., the “Art O’ The Green” exhibit will grace the walls for the month of March, featuring paintings by local artists in which green is a prominent colour.

‘Authors Among Us’ at Guildford SURREY — A panel discussion on how writers interpret love and loss is at the heart of an event at Guildford Library next Wednesday, March 5. Slater is a South Surrey-based novelist whose The Biscuit Barrel book combines stories from his grandparents with his military research into the First World War. ARTS & LIFE The arts

‘Just Shoes’ art sought for spring exhibit in Newton ArtsScene Melanie Minty Columnist

SEE SHOW PROMO VIDEO WITH LAYAR

I

love my shoes. In particular, I love my dance shoes. A beautiful, comfortable shoe is a gift. When you find the perfect shoe to enhance your dancing, that is a lifechanging gift. OK, so I have a lot of shoes. Why not? If your feet are happy, it is guaranteed that the rest of your body will be happy too. So, shoes. A necessary commodity, or a fashion statement? Or art? The Arts Council of Surrey is holding a juried art exhibition from April 3 to 30 at Newton Cultural Centre. The subject is “Just Shoes.” They are inviting entries. I was thinking of making a collage of different dance shoes, or maybe a collection of single shoes (often found on the side of the highway). I am sure the subject matter will lend itself to many ideas. How about shoes through history? OK, I am not giving away any more of my concepts. Make your own entry. Shoe lovers unite! Deadline for entry is Saturday, March 15. Forms and info at artscouncilofsurrey.ca. It is a difficult choice to say which dance shoes I love the most. Maybe my tap shoes. Yes, I have to say my tap shoes, especially as I have been on the board of West Coast Tap Dance Collective for quite a few years now. This umbrella organization is dedicated to the promotion of the art of tap dancing. It is not a school, just a group of likeminded individuals. The Canadian government does not recognize tap dancing as an art form (one of the things the collective lobbies for), so getting grants to promote this art form are

not available. West Coast Tap Dance Collective’s annual general meeting is at 4:30 p.m. this Sunday, March 2 at De Dutch in New Westminster (1035 Columbia St.). A tap jam is scheduled to follow the AGM with music, tappers and food. I know Surrey is full of talented tappers who love their tap shoes. Consider coming to the meeting, joining the WCTDC and meeting people of all tap dancing levels. The collective also gives out scholarships, hosts workshops and celebrates International Tap Day – a big presentation of tap dancing featuring professionals and local dance teams. Honestly, more people from Surrey are needed. Think about coming to the tap jam, at least. It starts at 5:30 p.m., after the AGM. All ages welcome. Bring your tap shoes. Yes, I know De Dutch is an odd place for a tap jam, but the space is generously donated and there is a sprung floor. Eat first, though. The collective is just providing snacks as the restaurant is actually closed in the afternoons after the lunch crowd. I can’t tell you

Damon Calderwood and Gordon Roberts star in First Impressions Theatre’s production of Holmes and Watson Save the Empire, a musical comedy to be staged at Surrey Arts Centre on Saturday, March 8. exactly what happens at a tap jam, it is always a bit different. Improv, soloists and sometimes a teacher volunteers to teach a combo. You can just watch, but show no fear. You have tap shoes. Gordon Roberts is the current president of the collective. This very busy

actor/musician has fit in board meetings for the collective in between his touring performances. You may have seen Gordon at Surrey Arts Centre when he played The Big Bopper in The Buddy Holly Story. Didn’t see him in that? No matter; Gordon Roberts

and his buddy Damon Calderwood are bringing their popular show, Holmes and Watson Save the Empire, to Surrey Arts Centre for a one-day-only performance on Saturday, March 8, starting at 8 p.m. Although there is no tap dancing involved, this family-

friendly, award-winning musical comedy is sure to be a hit with fans of the Sherlock Holmes character – or fans of Gordon Roberts. I am a fan of both, so I am booking my tickets right now, today. I will be wearing shoes.

The showcase returns on Wednesday, March 5, at the Roadhouse Grille in South Surrey, located at 1781 King George Blvd. “It blows you away, the calibre of the musicians who come out,” said Dennis Peterson, who has hosted the talent search over the last few years. “There’s some fantastic talent in this area.” Peterson, who also hosts open-mic nights at the Good Day Sunshine Café, is gearing up for the 2014 edition of the competition,

which started about four years ago. “A few of the local businesspeople got together and thought it was a great idea and got it rolling,” he said. Some local household names have their roots in the Diamond in the Rock contest: Previous winners include alt-rock group Tommy Alto, solo acoustic guitarist Mike Fabro and twin sister folk-country duo

Alanna & Brianna. Peterson said it’s inspiring to see kids and teens sing their hearts out and perform in the contest, noting that about 30 or 40 acts participate yearly, ranging from solo a cappella artists to trios with instruments. “It’s good experience for them, learning how to work with a microphone and handle themselves onstage,” he said. “It gives them

a chance to get out there and spread their wings.” Over the course of eight weeks, a rotating panel of judges picks one winner from each week to perform at the final concert. Peterson said judging the competition can be difficult, as the judges hear a wide variety of musical genres, as well as new and old tunes. “We hear a lot of Adele,” he said with a laugh, “but we had one fellow last year that kind of did a Woody Guthrie, old Bob Dylan-style of fingerpicking on acoustic guitar. “We’ve got electric blues, rock ‘n’ roll, all kinds of stuff.” The contest runs from March 5 to April 23 at the Roadhouse Grille, and the final show is set for May 4 at 2 p.m. at Blue Frog Studios, 1328 Johnston Rd. Upset win lifts Crusaders to Valley title Michael Booth

Now staff Twitter @boothnow

The Holy Cross Crusaders pulled off their biggest win of the season when they stunned the top-ranked Brookswood Bobcats 69-66 in the championship final of the Fraser Valley senior girls’ AAA basketball championships in Langley Saturday night. The Crusaders’ win marked the first time this season a Canadian team has beaten the Bobcats. “It was a very important win for us,” said Holy Cross coach Steve Beauchamp. “They came from six points down in the final minute to beat us in overtime a couple of weeks earlier and that was really tough on our girls. So to turn the tables and return the favour by winning this one was pretty special. Hopefully this gives our girls a boost of confidence knowing we are right there

and we can beat any of the elite teams in the entire province. “I think that right now, when we play Brookswood, either team can win on any given day. The teams are so close it comes down to who can make a couple of big shots at the right time.”

Beating Brookswood was a big thing, but even better was the fashion in which they did it. The win capped a winning week for the Crusaders at the Valley tourney. After opening the event with comfortable wins over Terry Fox and Surrey rival Fleetwood Park, the second-ranked Crusaders had a

much tougher time in Friday’s semifinal round where they knocked off third-ranked Riverside 70-42. That victory propelled Holy Cross into the Valley finale where they had revenge on their minds against the high-flying Bobcats. Brookswood looked to be in control for much of the proceedings, but the Crusaders hung around within striking distance until the end. After Holy Cross pared a 16-point Brookswood lead down to a single point in the final seven minutes, Crusaders guard Alli Buck picked an ideal time to put her name on the score sheet. Trailing 66-65 with 20 second remaining, Buck hit a field goal to give the Crusaders the lead and was fouled on the play. Her ensuing free throw missed, but the ball squirted out of a crowd of players into Buck’s hands and she calmly drained the field goal to give the Crusaders

a three-point advantage as the buzzer sounded. “The girls were all pretty excited,” Beauchamp said. “Beating Brookswood was a big thing, but even better was the fashion in which they did it. We were down by 12 points with less than five minutes to go, but we battled back right to the final shot to pull it out of the fire.” Nicole Vander Helm scored 27 points in the final and was named the tournament MVP. Rachel Beauchamp hit for 13 points and snagged 19 rebounds, while Michelle Bos scored 11. Rachel Beauchamp and Bos were both named to the tournament all-star team. The Crusaders will now get ready for the B.C. AAA Senior Girls’ Basketball Championships beginning March 5 in Langley.

Wildcats, Crusaders punch tickets to provincials Michael Booth

Now staff Twitter @boothnow

The Tamanawis Wildcats put a troubling part of their past firmly behind them Monday night. The Newton hoops powerhouse locked up a berth in the class AAAA senior boys’ provincial tourney by hammering Terry Fox 77-49 in quarter-final action of the Fraser Valley championships. Last year the ’Cats were ranked in the top five teams in the province with an eye on making some noise in the provincials. Instead, Tamanawis was upended in the quarter-finals of the Valleys and then dropped a do-or-die game in their next outing and missed the bus to the sport’s big dance. The top-ranked Wildcats were determined that history would not repeat itself this year and they delivered on that promise with two impressive wins to open the Valley tourney. “Our guys were all pretty excited,” said Wildcats coach Mike McKay. “They knew they were going to provincials and it made up for all the things that happened last year. The guys were happy, but we have another big game Friday so our work is not done. Yeah, making the provincials is one goal, but it’s not our main goal. It’s just a step along the way. We still want to win this weekend, but now we can start preparing for the provincials.” The Wildcats opened Fraser Valley play with a convincing 97-53 win over the Lord Tweedsmuir Panther in the round see CRUSADERS › page 40

Storm rages to Valley AA title Pegasus advances Michael Booth

Now staff Twitter @boothnow

The dark horse came through for the win at the Fraser Valley AA senior boys’ basketball tournament in Chilliwack last weekend. The unheralded Southridge Storm thrived in the underdog role, rising from unseeded qualifier to Fraser Valley champions. It was the third Fraser Valley title for the South Surrey private school, and first since 2007. “It’s been a while, but 12 of our 13 players were in Southridge the last time we won the Valley,” said Storm coach Steve Anderson. “They were all in the younger grades and they remember the excitement so they’ve aspired to do it again.” The Storm finished third in their league this season and had beat Thomas Haney in a play-in game just to qualify to play in the Fraser Valley tournament.

Everyone else in the event was seeded higher, but that was no deterrent for the Storm. The magic number for Southridge was 73, as the Storm scored that many points in each of their games en-route to the Valley crown.

Some of the things that they do well we were able to take away from them. It was probably our best game of the tournament. Southridge topped Archbishop Carney 73-72 in their opener and followed that up with another 73-72 decision, this time over the Delview Raiders in semifinal play. The Storm then completed their Cinderella run to the title by dispatching Pacific Academy

73-62 in Saturday’s final. “We’ve played PA several times and we know they are a good, well-balanced team,” Anderson said. “In the final we were able to use our strength to our advantage. Some of the things that they do well we were able to take away from them. It was probably our best game of the whole tournament.” The Storm will return to action at the provincial championships next week at the Langley Events Centre where they open against Elphinstone from the Sunshine Coast. “I think we have a good chance,” Anderson said. “Elphinstone has proven all year that they have a good team, but if we play they way we can, we can compete with them. I’ve said all year with this crew that if we play the right way, we can have a chance to beat anybody. Hopefully we can do that at the provincials.”

Surrey has just one team remaining after the Vancouver Metro Soccer League trimmed another four teams from the field of contenders in the annual Imperial Cup tournament Friday night. Newton’s ICST Pegasus will carry Surrey’s hopes into the semifinal round next month after posting an emphatic 4-0 win over Westside in quarter-final round play. Playing in the comfort of their own park, the Horsemen seized control of the match with two goals in the first half and never looked back to eliminate Westside from cup contention. Pegasus opened the scoring in the 15th minute of play when Goldy Takhar was fouled in the penalty area. Chetan Jhooty easily converted the ensuing spot shot to give the Horsemen a lead they would never relinquish. Ten minutes later, Takhar was rewarded for his efforts when he collected a pass from Reynold Stewart and hammered the ball into the Westside net. Pegasus cranked up the offence in the second half when Javid Khan tapped in a nifty cross from Brendan Campbell and the rout was on. Adam Costley sealed the deal in the 70th minute when his crossing pass was deflected into the net by a Westside defender. Pegasus is the lone Surrey team standing because league-leading Surrey United Firefighters were upended 2-1 by lowly Inter in another quarterfinal match Friday. Surrey fell behind in the 20th minute, but were able to pull even 10 minutes later when Vinnie Stewart converted a well-placed corner kick by Tom Lowndes. The score remained that way until the 75th minute when Inter finished off a clever two-man passing play to score what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Crusaders, Wildcats set to clash in Valley semifinal

‹ from page 37 of 16 on Friday night. Tamanawis followed that up with an equally impressive showing against traditional Valley power Terry Fox in Newton Monday. Sukjot Bains led the Wildcats with 30 points, while Sukhman Sandhu had a monster game with 17 points, nine rebounds and nine blocks. Parm Bains helped out with a dozen points. “We made up for what happened last year,” McKay said. “This is the best we’ve played all year. We had a couple of days to scout them and we practised what they run over and over and over. When the game started, they couldn’t get anything going against us. All of our guys were so ready to play that game. “Terry Fox worked hard and they’re good defensively, but our guys were hungry. We knew what they were running and we did a good job of shutting them down. Fox had 21 points at the half and 35 with about five minutes to go when we started to roll our bench. “They ended up with 49, but we were never threatened.” Meanwhile across town in Fleetwood, the Holy Cross Crusaders made some travel plans of their own. The third-ranked Crusaders made the jump from AA to 4A this season and on Monday night they proved the move was the correct one when they beat Pitt Meadows 79-68 in quarter-final round play of the Valleys to secure a provincial berth. As a 2A team last season, the Crusaders faced a long road trip to Kamloops for the provincials. This year all they will need is bus fare to travel to the Langley Events Centre when action tips off next week. “No road trip to Kamloops this year,” said Crusaders coach Matt LeChasseur. “We just have to go 15 minutes down the road. Our guys can sleep in their own beds, eat their

mom’s cooking — it’s much better than a long road trip.” Holy Cross kicked off the Valley tourney with a hard-fought 85-79 win over W.J. Mouat on Friday before facing a cagey Pitt team Monday. Holy Cross led Pitt 51-30 at the break, but the Marauders stormed back to cut the lead to single digits before the Crusaders put the game away in the final quarter. Juaquin Bennett-Boire led the Crusaders with 30 points, while Henry Maduabueke and Taylor Browne chipped in with 17 and 12 points, respectively. “This is really kind of just the first step and that’s the way the kids are looking at it,” LeChasseur said. “They didn’t get too excited, it was almost like they were matter of fact about it. Beating Pitt took us one step closer to our goal, but our kids have bigger goals than just qualifying for provincials.

When the game started, they couldn’t get anything going against us. All of our guys were so ready to play that game. “It was interesting to see how mature they were about it. They’re almost business-like in their approach as they tick off the list of things they have to do to accomplish their goals.” Next up for both Holy Cross and Tamanawis is a clash in the Fraser Valley semifinals Friday night (8:30 p.m.) at the Langley Events Centre. The winner of that game will advance to Saturday’s championship final against either Walnut Grove or Gleneagle. mbooth@thenownewspaper.com
