City hall

Surrey’s old city hall gets new tenants Crown counsel and community corrections moving in, but concerned residents demand more information “It’s a block away from a park, it’s a block away from residential, so there’s definitely some concerns. Nothing major has happened… but we think it’s lining up to possibly head that way.”

LEASE HELPS PAY FOR NEW HALL Amy Reid

Now staff Twitter @amyreid87

NEWTON — The old Surrey city hall will be home to Crown counsel and community corrections, after the provincial government signed a 10-year lease for part of the space. Surrey council approved the agreement during Monday’s council meeting. The lease is for 45,000 square feet of the building at a rate of $565,000 a year for the first five years, staff confirmed. The agreement is for an initial 10-year term, with options to renew up to 2036. Crown counsel will move from the Surrey courthouse to the former city hall as part of a $3.4-million expansion project that will more than double its office space. Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton said in a statement the project fits with B.C.’s long-term plans for court expansion in Surrey. The Lower Fraser Valley Court expansion plan, released in February, calls for 29 new courtrooms by 2033, eight of which are to be in Surrey. Expansion of Surrey’s provincial courthouse was identified in the plan as the highest priority project. Gerry McKinnon, acting general manager of engineering for the city, said when it comes to community corrections, the city has been told the matters being dealt with in the space will be “low risk,” such as bail orders or conditional sentence orders. “They’re deemed by the courts to not possess a significant risk for the safety of the community,” he said, adding the city agreed upon this type of risk level for the space, and expects the city would be consulted if

Surrey’s old city hall is just east of King George Boulevard on Highway 10. (File photo) that were to change. McKinnon said the corrections services are currently being offered out of a building on the northwest corner of 64th Avenue and King George Boulevard and the city hasn’t had complaints at that location. The city hopes the RCMP will lease the remainder of the old city hall, McKinnon said, which includes the south and west towers, as well as the north annex. But the city is also in discussions with universities, institutes, agencies, foundation and other public and private sector parties in relation to a justice precinct and/or campus at the facility.

RESIDENTS VOICE CONCERNS

Local resident Sonya Marcinkowska, of the Panorama Neighbourhood Association, said she was startled to learn Monday that a corporate report seeking approval for the lease was set to go before council that very night. “We had no information,” she said. “It was completely vague other than community corrections. What does that mean? What do they do?” She has concerns about what community

corrections operations will be going into the old city hall. “It seems this is going to be a place for not-so-violent- offenders… but are there going to be late night programs? Are we going to have people with specific issues walking out at night? I certainly have a lot of questions that are unanswered.” Marcinkowska attended Monday’s meeting and while she said she didn’t find what she was looking for during the meeting, she spoke to city staff after it had concluded. “They clarified what the program is, but I think our main issue is that we had absolutely no information until it was a done deal.” To Marcinkowska, the consultation process was flawed. “I think the issue here is that the city pulled a fast one on the community. We’re just gathering the facts after the fact.” Marcinkowska says the Newton Town Centre and Panorama areas have taken in a lot of social services. While she sees the practicality in putting justice services together, she has concerns about how concentrated the area is becoming.

During the 2011 election, Watts insisted the new city hall would cost $50 million net. The project was budgeted at $97 million. Construction costs were estimated at $87 million, with a $10-million contingency fund in case of unforeseen expenses, which was spent. An estimated $37 million in lease revenue of the old hall is expected to pay down the cost. This lease to the province accounts for roughly one-third of the old city hall. At $565,000 a year, if the rest of the property is leased at the same rate, the city would bring in roughly $1.7 million a year in lease revenue. Over 25 years, that would amount to roughly $42.5 million. Some have questioned how much the new city hall bill will be after financing. The budget was split into two mortgages, with one for $52 million at 4.2 per cent over 25 years and other at $45 million at 2.9 per cent over the same period, totalling an estimated $48 million of interest. But the city plans to pay the loan off in 10 years, which would result in $30 million in interest. In a statement, the city said the new city hall was an effort to create economic and job stimulus in Surrey, and said there has been $3 billion of private-sector investment since the city hall project was announced. Tax revenue generated from $3 billion of private-sector investment in City Centre will go toward the interest accrued, the city said. Once fully built out, the city expects the investments to result in $10 million to $11 million annually in property taxes to the city.

NEWS Ride to Conquer Cancer

Surrey dad rides to honour memory of his baby boy SUPPORT BRENT’S RIDE USING LAYAR APP Tom Zytaruk

Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk

SURREY — Many dads will spend their Father’s Dad in the hammock. But not Brent Rice. He’ll be spending his on the road, cycling 250 kilometres in memory of his baby son Jeremy, who died of cancer last year. Rice, 35, is a WestJet pilot living in South Surrey with his wife Sacha and their fouryear-old daughter, Chloe. When he’s not flying, he’s training to honour the memory of little Jeremy by cycling from Vancouver to Seattle in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, on June 14 and 15. So far, he’s raised $5,200 in pledges to help the B.C. Cancer Foundation combat childhood cancers. Jeremy died in Canuck Place on Feb. 8, 2013, when he was only 20 months old. He was born June 4, 2011 with a lump

under his arm that turned out to be metastatic infantile fibrosarcoma. Rice and his wife Sacha suspected something was amiss, and their worst fears were confirmed July 30, 2011, when doctors revealed the tragic diagnosis. “Not a day goes by that we don’t think about him all day,” Rice said. While it would not be uncommon for a parent to be consumed by bitterness under such circumstances, Rice is instead grateful for the time he got to know his son and thanks Jeremy’s doctors for the treatment they provided at BC Children’s Hospital. Without it, Jeremy likely would have died within the first month. Last year’s Ride to Conquer Cancer, with 2,642 cyclists, raised $10.4 million. Anyone who would like to support Rice’s ride can visit his donation page at conquercancer.ca/goto/BrentRice2014. “As childhood cancers are relatively rare there is not a lot of funding for this area and every dollar you donate will help,” Rice said. “Our family would like for nothing more in this lifetime than to see other families no longer facing the devastating loss of a child to cancer.” tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Murder suspect’s car found on fire

Man shot and killed in Cloverdale townhouse READ THE LATEST ON THIS STORY WITH LAYAR Tom Zytaruk

Murder suspect Barry McQuarrie, 33, is considered armed and dangerous.

Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk

SURREY — Police are investigating Surrey’s third homicide of the year after Gregory Quesnelle, 32, was shot inside a townhouse at Rodeo Park Place in Cloverdale. At press time police were looking for Barry McQuarrie, 33, in connection with their investigation. “If located, please do not approach him as he is considered armed and dangerous,” said Sgt. Adam MacIntosh, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Police had not yet laid charges in the shooting.

Yellow police tape surrounded a good part of the townhouse complex at 17445-57 Ave., and part of a commercial complex across the street. The shooting happened just before midnight Monday. “IHIT and the Surrey RCMP are working together to determine the motive for this homicide including the possibility of it being domestic related,” MacIntosh said. Sukhbir Sahota stepped out of her yoga class across the street on Tuesday morning to see what was going on.

“That’s bad, that’s very bad. Crazy,” she said of the shooting. “It’s starting more and more in Surrey.” Meanwhile, police and firefighters were called to an industrial complex at 192nd Street and 28th Avenue in South Surrey just before midnight Tuesday where they found on fire the stolen 2010 Kia Borrego police had been looking for, in connection with the search of McQuarrie. Police said McQuarrie is also wanted on unrelated warrants. Quesnelle, they said, is originally from Ontario and had a criminal record. Anyone with information can call the IHIT tipline at 1-877-551-4448. Quesnelle is Surrey’s third homicide victim this year. In January, the body of Tarsem Dhaliwal, 36, of Surrey was found inside a vehicle parked in the 18900block of 92nd Avenue in Port Kells, and earlier this month 83-year-old mother Anne Shouchuk was killed in Whalley by her daughter Kathleen Maximuik, 61, who then took her own life. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Laser therapy is not a surgical or invasive process. There is no cutting or burning with this type of laser. Instead, it gets absorbed by soft tissue and joints. This stimulates the healing process by increasing the production of ATP(adenosine triphosphate). ATP is the simple fuel that cells need to heal injuries and resolve inflammation. Laser therapy can also reduce scar tissue formation, increase lymphatic drainage and improve vascular circulation. All these things lead to faster and improved healing. have caused or contributed to his death. Nor was there evidence of inflammatory cells or enlargement of his heart. Toxicology tests found ethyl alcohol (0.11 per cent) in his blood, and evidence of prior cannabis use. “The toxicological examination did not identify any combination of drug/medication/volatile that would suffice to explain the death,” O’Reilly found. She noted that marijuana and alcohol are sedatives “and it is possible that the combination could alter consciousness and breathing.” After collapsing, Ernest remained flat-lined, despite all efforts to revive him. He had been celebrating a friend’s birthday on a party bus rented from Favori Limousine Service and boarded the bus with about 30 other young people, including his brother, shortly after 9 p.m. at Burnsview Secondary school in North Delta. O’Reilly noted that some passengers reported to police that alcohol and marijuana were being used. The bus made three stops and Ernest was reportedly fine during the first two. The first stop was in the “country side,” the second at a McDonald’s and the third at a gas station in the 15200-block of 72nd Avenue. Moments prior to the third stop, he suddenly collapsed while dancing. His brother and three other passengers helped him from the bus, and his brother called 911. Police were told Ernest had been drinking throughout the day and was known to smoke pot, but was not seen smoking on the bus and finished his last drink prior to boarding the bus. He didn’t complain about feeling unwell before he collapsed. As for the bus company, O’Reilly noted that Favori reportedly strives to hire staff who are trained in CPR, but is not obliged to do so. It also prohibits passengers under 19 years old from drinking and the only liquor found that night was inside passengers’ belongings. The coroner’s investigation revealed that the company usually employs a chaperon for groups of 20 or more but there wasn’t one in this case. Since Ernest’s death, Favori has been conducting bag searches for all passengers and not letting them board if alcohol or drugs are found.

SURREY — Why Ernest Azah Azoadam, 16, died will remain a medical mystery. Coroner Mary-Clare O’Reilly has determined that the teenager who was pronounced dead in Surrey Memorial Hospital after collapsing aboard a party bus in Surrey on Feb. 15, 2013, died “of an undetermined cause.

“I classify this death as undetermined and make no recommendations,” O’Reilly concluded in her report, filed last week. Last year, the BC Coroners Service ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors in the teenager’s sudden death. Ernest had seen his family doctor in the month prior to his death, complaining of a persistent cough. Otherwise, he had no significant medical history. The postmortem exam didn’t reveal any major trauma, infection or catastrophic vascular disruption that would

School counsellor faces U.S. judge over child porn charges DELTA — A Delta school counsellor has been arrested and charged with possession of child porn. According to reports, U.S. officers searched the Point Roberts home of William Brook last week, allegedly finding 334 images and videos, which included young children being sexually assaulted. It’s believed none of the images discovered so

far involved Delta students. According to Seattle P.I., federal prosecutors contend Brook downloaded hundreds of images and videos at his home. U.S. Homeland Security agents received a tip last month that he had been buying child porn online. Agents stopped his car last Wednesday as he attempted to cross the border and return home to Point Roberts. They seized his school district-issued computer he had in his possession, but illegal images were not

He appeared before a judge at U.S. District Court in Seattle on Monday and is scheduled to appear again later this week. Learning of the allegations last week, the Delta school district would not say the schools Brook worked at or age of the students he counselled. B.C. needs its crazy politics back PainfulTruth Matthew Claxton

H

i, Rest of Canada. It’s British Columbia here. Not to be a pest, but I think you’ve got something that belongs to us. Can we please have back our crazy? We’re not imagining this. B.C. politics used to be renowned for being the most bonkers, off-the-wall, lunatic, bring-the-popcornand-settle-in-to-watch show in the country. We had Flyin’ Phil Gaglardi and Wacky Bennett! We had Amor de Cosmos, a dancing toy penis in the legislature, Bingogate, Fast Ferries, police raids on a premier’s house suspiciously timed to let the TV cameras show up. We had the first cabinet minister of the entire British Commonwealth jailed for taking bribes. The Rocky Mountains

aren’t really a geological formation, they were put there by the rest of Canada to keep us loons from migrating back east. But now? Are we really so crazy anymore? Sure, we can make fun of Christy Clark’s relentless positivity, but that’s not exactly nutty, is it? And Gordon Campbell, cheerful drunk driving mugshot excluded, was a pretty grey presence during his long tenure. Nope, all the news that’s fit to laugh at is coming from back east. In Alberta, until-recentlypremier Alison Redford turns out to have been having a private suite built in a provincially owned building. A custom-made penthouse suite, built at taxpayers’ expense? Sure, why not? It’s not like she was elected to be fiscally responsible or anything. Of course, by the time this came to light, Redford’s own caucus had essentially pushed her out for spending thousands on air travel and hotel accommodations. Then there’s Quebec, our only real rival in generalized lunacy for many years. Now the pupil has truly become the master. On top of numerous corruption scandals, there’s the Parti

Remember when Toronto was boring? That was a nice 179 years. Now it’s the centre of a whirling vortex of madness, and the name of that madness is Mayor Rob Ford.

Quebecois’ desire to ban anyone working in the public service from wearing religious symbols – especially non-Christian ones. And of course, they won’t be taking down the

Sure, we can make fun of Christy Clark’s relentless positivity, but that’s not exactly nutty, is it? honking giant cross in their National Assembly building, thanks for asking. Top that off with a series of paranoid denunciations by their politicians of – gasp! – Anglophone university students. Some of the PQ MNAs are under the impression that McGill students are some kind of Fifth Column, trying to steal the election for Ontario. Which brings us to Ontario itself.

I have American relatives, and the three Canadian celebrities they just about all name instantly are Celine Dion, Justin Bieber and Rob Ford. That’s not exactly putting our best foot forward to the rest of the world, is it? You already know about the weirdness that is Rob Ford, but here’s a quick rundown of his various qualities: large, loud, won’t go to the Gay Pride Parade,

thinks “the Oriental people, they’re slowly taking over,” gets drunk in public, denies he was drunk, gets caught smoking crack, denies it, admits it, hangs out with drug dealers, swears a lot, says embarrassing things about his wife, lies repeatedly about his accomplishments in office, and will insist to anyone who asks that he is the best mayor Toronto has ever had. Did I mention he’s still mayor? Or that there’s a non-zero chance that he’ll win election and still

be mayor after the next election? I suspect that mad scientists from B.C. crept about in the night a dozen years ago, and extracted the crazy from top B.C. politicians. Then they spirited the vial of concentrated wacky-juice off to T.O. and injected it directly into the fleshy backside of Rob Ford. As a cop, I know how short-staffed Surrey is well – doing your part can make it difficult for car thieves, burglars, and gangsters to work here. However, investigating crimes and responding to violent incidents needs to be done by skilled police officers. I have worked at the Surrey detachment for 20 of the past 22 years, and the reality is, the detachment is constantly dangerously short-staffed. Using security guards and other resources may provide some relief, though if history repeats itself, once the media attention fades, those resources will likely fade away as well. Last year, the police officers serving this community provided more than 134,000 hours of unpaid overtime – nearly 65 fulltime police officers worth of time. While that helps to mask the shortages of officers, it contributes to mental and physical burnout due to the demands of the job. Why do these officers work so many hours without pay? They do it because, like you, they want to see criminals who terrorize their community in jail and simply do not have the time during their shifts to get all the work done. We want our city to be safe. We live here, our kids go to school and play here. We want

all families to be safe when they are out playing, going for a walk at night or simply going to the store to get groceries. We also know that having enough police officers on the beat can have dramatic results. Remember when auto theft was out of control and more police officers were temporarily moved to address the problem? We saw dramatic reductions in auto theft. Take the pressure off and the problem comes back with a vengeance. Trying to reduce crime in a community that is growing as quickly as Surrey while having a police force that has half the police officers compared to surrounding areas is a recipe for disaster and results in more crime, not less. S/Sgt. Mike Ingles, Surrey

Mayor Dianne Watts, written by Sandip Sandhu. Though a previous writer (Bob Maher) already countered those negative comments, there was some important elements not mentioned. Sandhu described Watts’ terms in office as a “dictatorship” and an “autocracy.” I find these political labels very misused. I’m not sure if this critic knows what these terms really mean. It’s like calling your teacher a fascist because he/she didn’t give you a very good mark on your book report, or an employee a communist, simply because he/ she thinks that all the employees need some sort of a company-sponsored health plan. Watts is definitely not a dictator, nor does she has an autocratic style of rule. I’m not a major supporter of Watts, but I do respect her political career as mayor of Surrey, and while she had positive and negative moments in her career, she will still have a positive legacy that she deserves to have. Being mayor of a rapidly-expanding city is not as easy as you think. No matter how you express your political opinion, try to choose the right words. Harman Dhaliwal, Surrey

The Editor, Re: “A safer Surrey: Is it just a dream?” the Now, May 8. Your article highlights some of the impacts of having a chronically understaffed police department. As the MLA for Surrey-Green Timbers noted, Surrey has fewer police per capita than any other community in the Metro Vancouver area. The impact of that means not only more crime, but it also takes a toll on those who provide the policing service. Recent government data shows Surrey RCMP police officers carry criminal caseloads that are 78 per cent higher than comparable metro police forces. What does that mean for the public? In a community more than twice the size of Vancouver it means increased response times, less visible police presence, and crimes that simply do not have anyone to investigate them. Sixty of the 95 police officers promised over the next five years will be consumed simply by population growth. There is no magic answer. If you want to catch criminals, you need enough police investigators to get the job done. We need the help of the community as

‘Peace’ at Vij’s glittering ‘newborn’ in Surrey Kristi Alexandra

Now contributor Twitter @kristialexandra

MORGAN CROSSING — On the corner of 24th Avenue and Croydon Drive in South Surrey stands a brand new, glittering structure. The face of the building is covered entirely in individually tacked-on square silver sequins, making it impossible to miss. The brand new spot, which glimmers in the sun like a school of piranhas, is the latest brainchild of Vancouver-based restaurateur Vikram Vij. The restaurant, My Shanti, set to do a soft open early next week, takes its name from the Hindi language and translates as “My peace”. The name could be ironic to some, considering Vij already runs two successful eateries in Vancouver – the upscale Vij’s and the more casual Rangoli’s – a food truck service (Vij’s Railway Express), and owns a 20,000-square-foot food production facility in Cloverdale that serves more than 400 grocers. Add one more restaurant at South Surrey’s Morgan Crossing into the mix, and the amount of responsibilities Vij has created for himself sounds anything but peaceful. But for the experienced entrepreneur, who has appeared on TV shows Dragon’s Den, Chopped and Recipe to Riches, his shanti actually lies in the stress. “I like stress. I thrive on stress. If I don’t have stress, I actually cause stress, like I’ll go out and do something stupid that will cause me stress,” said Vij, seated inside his new restaurant. “I thrive on that.” The walls, painted bright colours with gold-tinged paisley wallpaper lining the ceiling, are adorned with decorative, draping saris. One wall will be covered in an Indian-style mural made of strips of hand-painted fabric, the booths enclosed with nature-inspired twigs. “I wanted to create my culture on the streets, which is Indian saris, Indian fabrics, the beautiful shimmering, glittering things in India,” he said. “The idea is to bring my culture, and we brought it to South Surrey and we wanted that.”

Celebrated restaurateur Vikram Vij at his new My Shanti, in the Morgan Crossing area of Surrey. “This is like a child was just born – it’s going to be cholicky, it’s gonna have its issues, it’s gonna have all the issues that it’s supposed to have.” (Photo: KRISTI ALEXANDRA) More importantly, like the bright and dazzling decor of My Shanti, he’s bringing Indian culture to the area with the cuisine. The menu is full of original, regionallyinspired dishes from India — so don’t count on any stock butter chicken or vegetable pakora. “This is more regional, it’s more about India. If you look at the menu here, this is based on my travels to India,” Vij said, pointing to a draft print-out of palette teasers, including an Indian Democracy of Samosas (chicken, lamb and beef paired with local fruit chutneys), Goan oyster pakoras with a green-chili crème fraiche and mint gremolata, and a Bombay chattpatti squid – just to name a few. “Most Indian restaurants in Surrey are

North Indian restaurants. My Shanti is going to be based on my travels to India. I go to India every year. This is what I love, the best of the best dishes I’ve learned from there, and I’ve brought them back here.” The dishes are moderately priced, with appies and sides starting as low as $3 and entrees reaching up to the $26 range. There’s also a roster of nine different Indian-inspired cocktails, including an almond milk and vodka drink aptly named Badam da Naasha, meaning “getting high on almond milk”. The Devdas, mixed with a chai masala syrup and garnished with cinnamon bark, and the Kish ne Jaan (“Nothing my Love”) made with paan liquer, whiskey and lime juice, also feature

on the cocktail menu. While the outlook is positive for My Shanti’s soft opening, Vij is sure it won’t all go off without a hitch. “(People) will have to stop comparing me to Vij’s in Vancouver,” he underlined. “Vij’s in Vancouver has been a well-oiled machine for 20 years. This is day one. This is like a child was just born – it’s going to be cholicky, it’s gonna have its issues, it’s gonna have all the issues that it’s supposed to have – it’s like having a child. This is my newborn. It’s going to give me some issues, I’m going to have some sleepless nights. But don’t think that Vij’s and Rangoli didn’t. I just want people to come and enjoy themselves and understand where the passion and the love comes from.”

a graduate of Earl Marriott Secondary in Surrey. DPG’s first encounter with musicals was in high school, and now he is an in-demand director. I tried to interview him once, but he was so busy gabbing and schmoozing that it was difficult to get much in edgewise. I told him I could always make it up. And he was good with that. Gotta love this guy. “This show has all the ingredients to take you on a funny journey and send you out of the theatre humming a little something about the bright side of life,” he said. Well, so Spamalot will make you laugh a lot. Be prepared for parodies of the King Arthur legends and well-tread Broadway theatrical conventions. Something completely different. British actor John Cleese, was, of course, part of the Python cast and creation. He is also known for the BBC comedy series Fawlty Towers. Same brand of humour, but different setting. Last theatre season, New Westminster’s Vagabond Players presented a live performance based on segments from this popular TV series. Apparently, many fans were unable to get tickets, so Vagabond presents three new episodes as its final production of the 2013-2014 season. Again, just like Spamalot, laughter is guaranteed. Well, running a hotel is never easy, but with a socially clueless owner, a drunk chef, falling moose heads, aborted fire drills and a hapless Spanish waiter, chaos seems inevitable. The cast includes Ryan J. Johnson as Basil, Nancy Ebert as Sybil, William Valenzuela as Manuel, Ally Schuurman as Polly and a host of stellar performers playing the various guests. Good time to make reservations, at 604521-0412. The show runs until June 21 at Bernie Legge Theatre, in Queens Park. Don’t blame me if you don’t get tickets in time. This is good advance notice. Had a thought here: If Dean Paul Gibson discovered the joys of theatre in high school, maybe we should have a look at what is

happening in our local schools. Yep, checked it out. Elgin Park is definitely doing something different. They are putting a swimming pool on stage for their upcoming production of Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, a retelling of Ovid’s classical myths. Interim drama teacher Sheena Johnson tells the story: “We are also breaking out of proscenium theatre and putting the audience on either side of the actors to create an alley theatre space. Major characters include Zeus, Hades, Aphrodite, and Phoebus Apollo. The script uses both elevated language from Ovid’s epic poetry as well as a modern narrative style, to bring these myths to life. Of course the costumes have been pretty fun to do as well.” This show runs from May 21 to 23. Tickets are studentpriced at $10; for details, phone the Elgin Park office at 604-538-6678. While we are on the topic of something completely different: West Coast Tap Dance Collective presents its 12th annual International Tap Dance Day showcase on May 24 at Massey Theatre in New Westminster, 7:30 p.m. start. For only $25, you get a fabulous showcase of tap dancing that not includes not only internationally known professionals, but a sampling of local dance schools as well. Representing Surrey this year are Steel School of Irish Dance, Dance West and Dance Trance. The collective is something different in its own right. It was formed 12 years ago to promote and encourage the art of tap dancing. Education is one of the mandates for the collective, and each year at this showcase there is an honoree – someone who has contributed significantly to Canadian tap dance. This year, the honoree is Peggy Peet, a teacher who has shared her love of dance and tap dance with thousands of dance students in this area. You might be one of them. Go see this show. Phone the Massey box office, 604-5215050. Do something different. melminty@telus.net

Canada likely watching FCC decision closely DotComrade Christopher Poon Columnist

Up in the Great White North, we might not think that issues concerning the

Internet of our American brethren would be of issue to us. But you’d be wrong. If you haven’t already heard, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. is currently looking at a bill that could change the way the Internet is used not only

in the U.S. but in the rest of the world. A bill backed by some of that country’s top Internet service providers (ISP) is hoping to put a clamp on what is currently seen as a neutral Internet, by proposing to give preferential access to websites that pay

extra. Websites that cough up the cash would then see user traffic sped up through whichever ISP they paid. Think of it like this: back in the day, the mob would charge businesses in their area a “security” fee in order to keep things good and peaceful. Any business that

refused to pay was then made to suffer. It’s extortion. Your beloved Netflix? They’ve already ponied up to the likes of Comcast and Verizon in order to secure faster access speeds for consumers. The agreement came about after Netflix found that its traffic through the two providers was slowing down. I’ve written about net neutrality before, and I’m not going to stop, because this stuff is important. In today’s increasingly apathetic culture, corporations are banking on the shiftless to do nothing as they try to endanger the freedom of the web. In fact, some of the web’s largest stakeholders — Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon, to name a few — have banded together against the FCC’s proposed changes. From their perspective, they aren’t too stoked about potentially having to kick up to ISPs in order to have people accessing their sites faster. And while the backlash to the proposed changes has been somewhat widespread and universally condemning, I’m pretty surprised the public hasn’t responded with more outrage. Perhaps

if some of the websites against the proposed changes would shut down all services for a day or two, the populous would take notice. For the likes of Google, which reportedly made more than $100 million per day in 2012, it would be a costly protest, but it would certainly turn heads. And then we come to Canada. While the FCC stuff doesn’t affect us directly, you can bet providers and lawmakers up here are carefully watching how the FCC stuff unfolds. You can be sure that any and every ISP up here would love to rake in some extra revenue by holding web speeds hostage, so long as it’s implemented right. Interestingly, this comes at a time Netflix has released a report on its service speeds in Canada. While Bell was found to stream Netflix the fastest at 3.19 megabits per second (mbs), Rogers Canada was at the bottom of the pack at 1.19 mbs. Comparatively, we have things pretty good here up north, but if the FCC’s whole “preferred access” thing goes through, you can bet Canada’s Internet landscape will soon go south.

SURREY — Regina resident Annora Bourgeault, 21, was crowned Miss World Canada during a coronation gala Sunday at Surrey’s Bell Performing Arts Centre. The Miss World Canada pageant touts the philosophy “Beauty with a Purpose”, and while 41 final contestants walked their way through a bikini show, an international costume competition and an evening gown viewing, at the heart of the competition was a philanthropic spirit. Over the year, the 41 girls and women on

The evening was full of entertainment, kicking off at 7 p.m. with the 16-year-old Ria Jade performing for the crowd of around 350 people. The talent portion of the competition saw Miss World Canada delegates performing various talents, including Jasmine Vega in a cheerleading routine, Lisa Xie singing opera and first-runner-up Erica Virk performing a traditional Indian dance

Mary Zilba, also a former Housewives personality, and Miss Ohio 1986, did an offthe-cuff rendition of “Amazing Grace” when put on the spot by one of the gala’s hosts. A few minor technical difficulties had the coronation running a little later than expected. It was closer to 11 p.m., not the anticipated 9:30 p.m., when Miss World Canada as named, with Bourgeault beating out Virk in the final moments. Bourgeault will go on to represent Canada at the Miss World competition later this year.

SURREY — Adam Hill is preparing to find out what he is really made of. The 28-year-old has been training at Suitela Fight Club in Newton for the last two years and stepped into the ring for the first time Friday (May 9), in his amateur debut. However, Hill hasn’t been able to attend training sessions as regularly as he used to. For a year now, Hill has been working on the oil rigs in Fort St. John. Due to his employment, Hill spends only five days per month training at SFC. “Before I started working up north, I’d come three times a week and bust my butt,” Hill said. “Now, I’m working out of town 20 days every month.” Despite not being able to train, Hill doesn’t think his fitness is an issue. “I’m off of work for a month or two, so I can train, train and train. I’m always in good shape because of my job,” Hill said. He is a basketball player turned boxer, and has no competitive martial arts experience. Andy Suitela, Hill’s boxing coach, is certain of Hill’s incredible work ethic and state of mind. “Anybody that willingly goes to those oil rig jobs, and puts himself through that roughneck stage where they are doing all the grunt work ... is a really determined guy,” Suitela said. “That’s heart.” Even though he isn’t able to attend training on a regular basis, Suitela believes that Hill’s personal life shows how much “heart” he has, and that it will shine while he’s in the ring. “Outside of the gym ... he’s showing me that he’s responsible and mature. Those are attributes that make for a good fighter,” Suitela added.

Suitela also said Hill has the body shape of a boxer and the sport was easy for him to pick up. Hill was born and raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The six-foot-three, 170-pound welterweight now resides in Fleetwood with his girlfriend of nine years, Tanille Porgerson, and two-year-old son Kaiden. Porgerson will support her boyfriend and plans to attend all of his fights. “He’s been more of a positive person,” Porgerson said. “Boxing has had a positive impact on him.” After spending 11 years working in construction, Hill took the job up north so he could start saving to buy a house for his family. “I wanted to do something good that my kid will appreciate when he’s older,” Hill said. This goal is very close to Hill’s heart. When he was 12 years old, Hill and his mother moved to Burnaby. However, they struggled to make ends meet. “I stopped going to school to help my mom with rent. I grew up poor,” Hill said. Hill was in grade 11 when he dropped out of high school and got a job on a construction site, where he worked for 11 years before taking the job in Fort St. John. Even if he buys a house outside of Surrey, Hill says that he will continue to train with Suitela. “I’d still come here no matter what,” Hill said smiling. “(Suitela) is a great guy. He’s inspirational and talks to us like we’re family.” His debut, a loss, took place at Cascades Casino in Langley. His next fight is scheduled for Aug. 1.

Provincial Cup soccer

11th provincial title in a row for Surrey United women Surrey United women’s Premier team celebrates its Provincial Cup title Sunday in Burnaby. (Photo: GORD GOBLE)

Now contributor goble@shaw.ca

SURREY — Life counsellors will say you should embrace change, that you should take a chance, try new things and that standing pat is a recipe for disaster. Well, life counsellors, Surrey United thinks you’re full of malarkey. Sunday afternoon (May 11) on a soccer field at Burnaby Lake, as the sun inched ever closer to the horizon, the Surrey United women’s Premier team opted to stay the course and do precisely what they’ve done 11 years running: hoist the Provincial Cup. They wouldn’t have it any other way. Powered by a two-goal performance from veteran offensive stalwart Nicole Stewart – one in the first half, another in the second, both on goalmouth headers – United held a decisive possession advantage throughout, manufactured more dangerous scoring opportunities and, at the final whistle with the score 2-0, came together in a boisterous knot of soaked jerseys and smiling faces. Seems this winning thing never gets old. Though it wasn’t always easy. Goalkeeper Theresa Nuttall was called upon to make key

saves in both halves, and the second frame in particular began with a strong push by opponent North Shore Renegades. But when Stewart headed in her second marker from an April Coffin corner, on a play where several players from both sides ended up inside the cage, the outcome never seemed in serious doubt.

Team manager Albert Stewart, who’s now overseen every United provincial title since 2008, liked what the Renegades brought to the table Sunday afternoon. “It was a clean game today,” he said. “We’ve come out of previous games (with the Renegades) with various knocks and injuries, but I was extremely impressed by

the way they played today.” Manager Stewart credits grace under fire for his team’s continued success. “We’ve had a great core group for a long time now. We lose some to college, but then hopefully they come back after college. There’s a bit of a stigma attached to our team, where younger players feel they might not get a chance, but we actively look for new players to join the group. “But ultimately, experience separates us,” he added. “We don’t get flustered. Being down a goal or going through a rough patch doesn’t weaken our resolve.” By virtue of the team’s Mother’s Day victory, United will travel to Vaughan, Ontario for the national championships in October. In the meantime, much of the team will remain intact for the debut of the Premier spring season. And what of the chances of a dozen straight provincial cups this time next year? That’s one area where standing pat would be just fine, thank you very much.

Your journey starts here.

Coupe

A two-door Canadian favourite, now improved BY BRENDAN McALEER

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com

Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer

Environment:

The major powertrain change is the addition of a CVT as the option for the automatic transmission. Honda claims that their CVT actually improves both acceleration as well as fuel economy, but often these belt-driven transmissions can sap the last vestiges of fun out of any car.

Still, the trunk remains a useable size, and the cabin space for the front passengers is really quite reasonable. The forward view is just as good as the sedan, although the same cannot be said for the shrunken rear window, which restricts visibility to pillbox levels.

Not here though. It you’d prefer to shift your own gears, the Civic Coupe comes equipped with paddle-shifters mounted to the steering wheel and a optional S-mode for the automatic transmission. It’s no replacement for the manual transmission – which is only available as a 5-speed on base and EX models – but it does provide a little more control over proceedings.

Inside, the Civic Coupe’s compromises might outweigh the style benefits for the practically-minded consumer. That cut-down roof certainly shrinks the headroom, and the rear seats are for emergency use only.

When the 2012 Honda Civic emerged as a new, less-expensive, de-contented model, the critics were unequivocal in their denigration. “This isn’t a proper Civic!” they cried, and scurried to their keyboards to ladle out the vitriol. The public was aghast, and recoiled in horror. Like ripples in a pond, the effects of the criticisms quickly spread, and soon the Honda Civic was still the best-selling car in Canada, by a landslide, for like the sixteenth year in a row. Wait. What?

Like all Civics, the Coupe continues its split-level instrumentation, which some love and some hate. Benefits include a high-mounted speedometer that removes the need for a heads-up display, and two colour-changing strips that provide instant feedback on the gas-sipping grade of your driving style.

Yep, even if the Emperor does occasionally doff his undergarments, Canadians still can’t get enough of the efficient Honda Civic. We’ve been smitten since the days of the CVCC, and the love affair continues even when the big H makes a gaffe.

Besides that, this is a willing little car that’s a bit let down by its overly light steering. Improvements to the chassis include a new firmed-up rear stabilizer bar, and the CVT does its best to keep the engine in its modest 143hp powerband.

The bigger news here is the sheer level of available technology at a mid-range level. All Civic Coupes have things like heated seats, Bluetooth, and streaming audio, but the volume-selling mid-range model comes with stuff like a power moonroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, USB input, and Honda’s HondaLink system for infotainment.

Honda, to their credit, responded to the finger-pointing with admirable rapidity, and now brings out a face lifted and updated version of their perennial best-seller. Here, in the coupe, the Honda fan can find a marriage of a bit of personal style with that same sensible efficiency and durability. But has Honda done enough here to make sure they aren’t just resting on their laurels?

It’s actually quite good, though not quite as much of a driver’s car as all Hondas seemed to be in the heyday of the early 1990s. Having said that, the Civic is easily capable of effortless high-speed highway travel and the light steering removes most elements of fatigue from racking up the miles. If you want zippy performance, you’re pretty much going to have to skip right up to the Si model, but the standard Civic Coupe does manage to do a good job of re-introducing some of the zip and verve that was missing from the 2012 models.

Then there’s stuff like the LaneWatch blind spot display. Debuting in the Accord sedan, this camera-based system shows a high-resolution view of the right side of the car every time the right indicator is put on, helping to show cyclists or other obstacles lurking in your blind spot. It’s not a substitute for vigilant shoulder-checking or properly setting your mirrors, but it is a handy assist.

Design:

Redesigned sheet metal might not seem like a big deal to you or me, but when we’re talking about a volume-selling car with thousands made around the globe, a dollar or two per car soon skyrockets into the millions. Happily, that’s apparently a cost Honda is willing to pay.

Features:

As mentioned, the Civic Coupe includes heated seats, Bluetooth, and front USB and auxiliary inputs. Move up to the EX and you get a power moonroof and the HondaLink connectivity which can use your iPhone to provide navigation functions.

Beyond that, the trunk is usefully-sized, though not as gargantuan as that of the Scion tC’s hatchback, and the rear seats fold with a 60/40 split. The cloth seat-covering is grippy and durable, and similar to that found in the Civic Si – it’s very comfortable after several hours of highway travel.

The new 2014 Civic coupe gets an entirely new front end, and a reworked rear treatment. It now looks even more differentiated from the sedan, and why else would you be buying the less-practical two-door except for stylistic reasons? Where the old one had more than a passing resemblance to a four-wheeled Dustbuster, the new Coupe looks more like a scaled-down version of the Accord Coupe. 16” alloys are standard on this EX mid-range EX model, and while there’s a lot of faux grille up front, the overall effect is a more aggressive little car. It’s sleek, and just a little bit interesting.

It’s all handled through a great-looking touchscreen, though I did find myself wishing for a volume knob. The LaneWatch blind-spot system is nicely high-resolution and points the way for great camera coverage in compact cars.

Performance:

Fuel economy is better than ever, thanks to the CVT, with official ratings at 6.9L/100kms city and 5.1L/100kms on the highway. More realistically, highway mileage hovers in the high 5s at best.

A new exhaust system gives the Civic Coupe a very mild performance bump. The 1.8L VTEC-equipped four-cylinder engine now makes 143hp, and it makes it fairly high up the rev range.

AUTOMOTIVE 1966-67 Charger

Dodge’s fabled fastback charted a unique course Malcolm Gunn

Now contributor wheelbasemedia.com

Although large and perhaps disproportionate by today’s standards, in its day the first Dodge Charger was sleek, smooth and sophisticated. It added sparkle to the mid-sized automobile category while pushing Chrysler Corporation’s design and performance to new levels. When the Charger was officially launched Jan. 1, 1966, Detroit’s horsepower race was in full gallop. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler were busy stuffing monstrous V8s and assorted highperformance parts into intermediate-size cars originally intended to pack low-output six-cylinder engines or modest-output V8s. At the same time, the so-called “pony cars,” led, of course, by Ford’s popular Mustang, were beginning to flex their pectoral muscles with high-revving smalldisplacement V8s that could hold their own - for the first half block, anyway - against some of the bigger-bore contenders at the local stoplight drags. Dodge’s stylists took a considerably different approach to compete against this heady mix of brawn and bravado. Their entry, appropriately christened the Charger, was nothing short of an attention-grabbing eyepopper. Based on the midsize Coronet coupe, the Charger’s distinctive swept-back roofline completely transformed the low-key familyoriented car into a fashionably upscale sports machine. Although not the first automobile to take the fastback route, the Charger’s massive signature-piece hardtop

with its expansive rear glass was an extreme variation on an emerging theme. Power-operated hidden headlights plus tail lamps that extended the full width of the rear deck also reinforced the Charger’s leading-edge look. As stunning as it was on the outside, the Charger’s interior also broke new ground. Vinyl-covered bucket seats for both front and rear passengers were standard and, combined with a full-length floor console, gave the appearance of a richly appointed corporate jet. As a bonus, the rear buckets and the divider between the trunk and the cabin could be folded flat to create a carpeted load floor. But what made the Charger so special with the enthusiast crowd was the array of available engines. The starting point was a 230-horsepower 318cubic-inch V8 that came standard with a columnmounted three-speed manual transmission. Most buyers, however, passed on this price leader, opting instead for either a 265-horse 361cubic-inch V8 or a 383 with 325 horsepower on tap. For an extra $1,000, the equivalent of one-third the Dodge’s starting price, you could upgrade to Chrysler’s rip-snorting 426cubic-inch “Hemi” V8. With an advertised 425 horsepower, a fourspeed Hemi Charger could touch 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and run the quarter-mile in 14 seconds, making it one of the most potent muscle cars on the road. Heft and skinny tires were the limits to quicker acceleration. In its initial year, just 468 Hemi Chargers, out of a production run that totaled close to 40,000 units, found homes. Aside from a few

minor changes, the 1967 Charger carried on as before. The 361 V8 was cancelled, replaced by a new 440-cubic-inch engine that made 375 horsepower and was nearly as fast as the Hemi, but a lot cheaper and less temperamental. It also qualified for the

full factory warranty. From a sales standpoint, the ‘67 Charger was a flop, with output dropping to less than half of first-year sales, including a meagre 118 Hemis. Shoppers had many new pony and muscle-car entries from which to choose, such as

Malcolm Gunn is a feature writer with Wheelbase Media, on the web at wheelbasemedia. com.

Although first-year sales of the Charger were brisk, they tanked for 1967. Luckily for Dodge, the sleek 1968 redesign was right around the corner.

37th annual cloverdale bed races On your marks, get set, go! The annual Cloverdale Bed Races are back for the 37th year from 5:30-7:30 pm on Thursday, May 15th. Teams are tasked with putting together aerodynamic and agile beds on wheels, and racing head-to-head to cross the finish line first. The catch? Someone has to be in the bed during the race (sleeping on this job is not recommended). Teams from each category – men, women, media and mixed – vie to win the coveted prizes, like the Bed Pan trophy, Chamber Pot and Stone Pig. The annual Cloverdale Bed Races are the most quirky and fun ways to kick off the Rodeo & Country Fair!

cloverdale rodeo & country fair 2014

at the 2014 cloverdale rodeo & country fair

Don your favourite cowboy hat and slip on your best boots, the 68th annual Cloverdale Rodeo and 126th Country Fair is back May 16 to 19, 2014. The world-class Rodeo competition will draw in some fiercely talented riders, while special guest performers Robyn & Ryleigh and the Express Clydesdales will entertain crowds during shows. On the Fairgrounds, there’s something for cowboys and cowgirls of all ages! The youngsters can check out the Kidz Zone and Teen Club, while adults celebrate in the Longhorn Saloon. The midway is full of rides, games, activities and food for the whole family, and that’s just the start. Get ready for a fun-filled, exciting weekend at the y! Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair, and let’s get back to country!

get ready for rodeo action! Some of the most fiercely talented guys and gals in the rodeo circuit are saddling up for the 68th annual Cloverdale Rodeo. Fans can watch premier athletes in this internationally acclaimed invitational Rodeo compete in Bareback, Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding and Ladies Barrel Racing in five Rodeo performances, as they look to win a total of $328,000 in cash prizes and the coveted championship title. The young aspiring cowboys and cowgirls get their chance in the spotlight with the extremely entertaining Mutton Bustin’ competition. You won’t want to miss this year’s intense rodeo action!

bareback

rodeo 101: 8 seconds of action

For eight whole seconds, a leather handle is the only equipment allowed to compensate for the cowboy’s errors of balance or coordination. The rules are simple: on the first jump out of the chute, the rider must “mark the horse” by keeping his heels over the break of the horse’s shoulders before its front legs hit the ground. If the rider touches the horse or equipment with their one free hand, they will be disqualified. The judges aren’t just evaluating the cowboys in this competition; the horse’s performance accounts for half of the total score.

bareback competitors to watch: Matt lait – Cayley, aB

Canadian competitor Matt claims that once you get into Bareback, it’s hard to get out. Matt was 13 years old when he started riding bucking horses and he has not turned back since. He is currently ranked 9th in Canada and was the 2013 Canadian champion for Bareback.

Caleb Bennett – Morgan, ut Caleb was raised in a rodeo family and started riding bucking horses at a young age, but it was only after he finished four years of college that he really started to set his mind on Bareback as a career. Now 25 years old, the 2013 Calgary Stampede champion is currently ranked 3rd in the world and he doesn’t plan to slow down anytime soon!

saddle bronc

Originally based on the essential horse breaking skills of a working cowboy, Saddle Bronc is now a highly stylized competition that combines athleticism with art. Saddle Bronc permits a specialized saddle with swinging stirrups, which the rider uses to find a rhythm with the horse by spurring back and forth, with his feet in a sweeping motion from shoulder to flank. On the first jump out of the chute, the rider must “mark the horse out,” similar to Bareback. The rider will be disqualified if he loses a stirrup, gets bucked off before reaching eight seconds, or if he touches any part of the horse or equipment with his one free hand. The cleanest and most synchronized Saddle Bronc riders will be top score recipients.

saddle bronc competitors to watch: rylan Geiger – dutchess, aB

Growing up on a ranch in Saskatchewan with a father who rode Bareback helped mold Rylan into the rodeo star he is today. At just 24 years old, Rylan is currently ranked 2nd in the Canadian Pro Rodeo Circuit and was the 2013 Canadian

champion. Rylan maintains that you get out what you put in, and he is going to put in his all at Cloverdale this year!

Heith deMoss – Heflen, la

Heith has always wanted to ride bucking horses, and he credits his Bareback-riding father for steering him towards Saddle Bronc. Since his rodeo career took off when he was 17 years old, this father of two attends an average of 120 rodeos every year. Currently ranked 12th in the Pro Rodeo World Standings, this 2014 RodeoHouston Saddle Bronc champion is looking to bring his best to Cloverdale this year.

bull riding

Bull Riding has been called the most dangerous eight seconds in sports. Not surprising, since it involves a cowboy sitting on a bucking bull with nothing but a braided manila rope to hold on to! If riders touch any part of the bull with their one free hand, they will be disqualified. Top Bull Riding scores are awarded to riders who best match their movements with the bull, maintain good body position without tilting or leaning, and make good use of their free hand. hand

rodeo 101: 8 seconds of action bull riding competitors to watch:

country superstars like Big & Rich, Brad Paisley, and Aaron Pritchett, the up-and-coming Langley sisters are all set to perform their newest singles and favourite past hits, which you are sure to have stuck in your head all weekend long.

trey Benton – rock island, tX

express Clydesdales

At the early age of five, Trey started riding sheep and calves, and eventually worked his way up to Bareback and Bull Riding. Currently ranked 3rd in the world for Bull Riding, Trey placed 1st at the 2013 Cloverdale Rodeo and is back to defend his title.

The Express Clydesdales is a team of horses like no other. Once bred for their immense strength and size, each horse stands over 6 feet tall and weighs more than a tonne. These magnificent rare black and white Clydesdales and their 3,000-pound handcrafted wagon have starred in some of the world’s most famous parades. Joining the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair all the way from Yukon, Oklahoma, the Express Clydesdales is truly a unique spectacle and a must-see attraction.

Chad Besplug – Claresholm, aB When Chad first watched Bull Riding as a child, he knew it was what he wanted to do with his life, and he has been training and competing ever since. Chad was the 2013 Canadian Bull Riding champion, is currently ranked 3rd in the national standings, and he does not plan on giving it up anytime soon!

ladies barrel racing

Speed is everything in this exciting sport! Ladies Barrel Racing combines the horse’s athleticism with the horsemanship skills of the rider to successfully guide the horse through a cloverleafpatterned barrel course. If the contestants fail to follow the set pattern, they are disqualified. For every barrel that is knocked over, a five-second penalty is added to the overall run time, but if the ladies stay in their riding positions, they may hold a barrel from falling down, and then it’s a race to the finish line!

ladies barrel racing competitors to watch: rylee McKenzie – St. Paul, aB

Mutton Bustin’

always been a priority for Rylee, and with her impressive track record, being in the lead is the only place this cowgirl plans to be.

Britany diaz – desdemona, tX

After placing 1st overall at the 2011 Cloverdale Rodeo and with her current 11th place ranking in the Pro Rodeo World Standings, Britany has earned herself a solid reputation on the Barrel Racing circuit. Born on a ranch in South Central Dakota and Team Roping since high school, Britany’s love of horse riding comes as no surprise, and now Britany’s back to reclaim her title!

Future rodeo stars take centre stage to show off their skills in the Mutton Bustin’ competition - think Bull or Bronc Riding with a sheep! In this rodeo event, the young rider is placed on top of the sheep, then the sheep is released and starts running in attempt to get the rider off. High scores are awarded to the young cowboys and cowgirls who can stay on the longest.

You’ll find millions of dollars worth of classic and collector cars on display during the four-day Country Fair, and you'll get to relive some of the automotive trends of the past including classic fastbacks, retro tailfins, running boards, whitewall tires, and more. With stunning vehicles including 1930s and '40s-era Fords, a 1956 Pontiac Starchief, and even a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville, you won’t want to miss everything this Show has to offer! New to this year’s Show is the Classic Car Corral, which will give automobile enthusiasts the chance to show, sell, and buy vintage cars and trucks from fellow collectors; and Sunday’s Show will feature a performance by Elvis tribute artist Steve Elliott.

agri Zone

It wouldn’t be a Country Fair without some good ol’ fashioned farming traditions. The Agri Zone in the Ice Rink complex has cow milking demonstrations, a little farmer’s exhibit, and educational displays to teach children about farming and agriculture. Kids will get a kick out of the mini donkeys, pot belly pigs, horses, llamas, goats, sheep, and many other adorable animals that will be hanging out in the Agri Zone!

kidZ Zone

Keep the kids laughing and learning at the Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair Kidz Zone. With the cowboy and cowgirl training from West Coast Slam, the Cone Zone go-kart track, and the Tramp Spectacular, youngsters of all ages will have a blast in the Kidz Zone.

“where we’re from, where we are, and where we’re going”

The Aboriginal Expo will be a beautiful display of native culture, celebrating the rich history and influence of Canada’s Aboriginal community. The Long House of History & Culture features a number of fun activities, including traditional craft stations, performing arts shows, clothing and jewelry vendors, and more. The Long House of Economic Development will educate visitors about the many programs that promote education, economic development, and community partnerships with Aboriginal communities in the region.

test your driving skills, kids! In the Cone Zone, youth can drive go-karts around a track, complete with markings and work zone hazards, like trucks and cranes. They will gain valuable knowledge about road safety while having fun in an exciting and safe setting.

cowboy and cowgirl training For the very first time, West Coast Slam will be at the Kidz Zone, offering cowboy and cowgirl training for children! Kids will try to beat ‘Skully the Bad Cowboy’, by working through challenges and entering to win prizes, with one ultimate prize being awarded at the end. Only the best cowboys and cowgirls can beat Skully, and West Coast Slam can teach your kids how.
