City seals controversial Fir Street building deal Coun. Helen Fathers decries lease process, calling it ‘sketchy at best’

counterproductive as dozens and dozens of empty properties are awaiting a tenant,” she said. “We should not be in competition with the business community.” While the leasing opportunity would bring the city some revenue, Fathers wondered why other members of council felt it necessary to lease out what little cityowned property there was when there were so many community uses to be had. see BOTTRILL SAYS › page 4
WHITE ROCK — Mayor Wayne Baldwin will run for re-election in this fall’s municipal election. Asked Monday if he had made a decision about re-election yet, Baldwin affirmed his intent to seek a second term as the city’s top politician. Baldwin was first elected as mayor in 2011 and had previously served as White Rock’s city manager for 23 years. According to Baldwin, there are still several large initiatives started during his term that he’d like to see finished up, including the rail safety and relocation issue, the purchase of the water utility from EPCOR and numerous capital projects. “We just haven’t finished all the stuff that we wanted to get done so I feel like if I leave now things would be half done and that would be a shame,” he said. “There’s a lot of things that are still out there that I’d like to see through and get them done.” Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts says her team is also gearing up for the election. “I’m planning on running,” Watts said Wednesday. With Marvin Hunt winning his bid as Surrey-Panorama MLA, there will be at least one spot on the slate to fill. When asked if anyone else on the Surrey First team planned to leave, Watts said “not that I’m aware of.” The 2014 municipal election will take place on Nov. 15. With files from Amy Reid

WHITE ROCK — A former church building now owned by the city was given final approval to be leased out to private interests Monday, much to the dismay of one councillor. Purchased by the previous council in order to bring the entire block under city ownership, the building (located at 1174 Fir St.) had originally been intended for civic uses and was even destined to be site of a new council chamber. However, that changed late last summer when Coun. Bill Lawrence rescinded his vote on the matter, triggering the discussion and eventual decision to rent the building out for private use. Those against the decision were councillors Helen Fathers and Alan Campbell, of which the former had been an outspoken critic of the entire

Rail safety task force created
Gary Hollick named the ‘Now’ publisher The Now is proud to announce the return of Gary Hollick as publisher. Hollick returns to the publisher’s office after two years of running the Richmond News, a sister paper to the Now. “I am excited to be back in Surrey, where we are no longer just a newspaper, but a media outlet,” Hollick said. “Today, the Now has become one of the single most credible sources of community information that Gary Hollick Surrey residents can count on to be factual, informative and entertaining.” Hollick said the Now has been investing in all the latest technology and is leading the market in delivering its information on not just newsprint but through the web, Facebook and Twitter. He adds that the Now will be introducing several interesting new services this month. “The reality is, we are a media company now delivering our message on multiple mediums,” Hollick said. “We are excited about the opportunities that the new face of our industry is presenting us.” Hollick is no stranger to Surrey – he says has his time well invested in making Surrey the greatest city in Canada. Hollick is currently serving the community in many areas – he is the president of Sources, is a member of SFU Surrey advisory board, a director on Credit Council of Canada, president of Cornerstone Healthcare, and is past president of both the Surrey Board of Trade and Surrey White Rock Chamber. He was also a governor for Rotary International. “Surrey is a city with amazing opportunities for everyone,” he said. “I am excited to continue growing the success of the Now in concert with all the organization and work hard to help make Surrey a place people love to call home.”

SURREY — Dereje Kinfe and his wife Hiwot are Ethiopia-bound after winning the $5-million jackpot on the Jan. 4 Lotto 6/49 draw. The 44-year-old Surrey man, who works at Vancouver International Airport, bought his ticket before starting his work shift and checked it at a 7-Eleven store the next day. When he saw the screen load up with all kinds of zeroes, he let out a small scream. “People began crowding around and
congratulating me,” Kinfe said. Then it was time to tell his wife. “I always told her, ‘One day I’m going to win big and then I will come to your work and tell you,’” he said. Hiwot began to shake when she saw him outside the salon where she works. “He couldn’t wipe the smile off his face and I knew he had won something,” she said. The couple plans to pay off their mortgage, but first on their agenda was a trip back to their native Ethiopia, to share their good news with family and friends. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com
WHITE ROCK — In the wake of a recent coal train derailment in Burnaby, White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin has created a special task force aimed at highlighting rail safety, paving the way for an eventual delegation to Ottawa. “I think something has to be done for sure,” said Baldwin. The task force follows an initiative started in the fall in partnership with the City of Surrey to study rail safety along the waterfront and what could be done about the transfer of dangerous goods along that line. In November, White Rock council made a formal request to Canada’s Minister of Transportation Lisa Raitt to enact stricter policy for the transport of dangerous goods through communities. The request was for municipalities to be able to receive data on when dangerous goods would be transported through communities, giving those municipalities extra information to prepare for an emergency. Shortly afterward, Raitt announced communities would receive quarterly reports on dangerous goods being brought through communities, but still retroactive to the fact. Baldwin would like to see that changed. “If we succeed in getting everything off the waterfront that would be great, but my foremost concern would be the dangerous goods,” he said. Coun. Grant Meyer will head up the task force, which will include stakeholders and members of the public, as well as councillors Larry Robinson and Alan Campbell. cpoon@thenownewspaper.com

Bottrill says city hasn’t negotiated deal for building otherwise, city manager Dan Bottrill said that wasn’t the case. “We haven’t negotiated an agreement yet with anyone,” he said. “We did have an expression of interest that was issued, but we’re still working through that process.” Bottrill noted that sort of negotiation is typically dealt with in closed meetings so as
‹ from page 1
Fathers said the entire process has been backward, as council was giving it final approval after a decision to award the lease had already been made in “backroom deals.” However, when asked if a tenant had been chosen in an in-camera meeting or
not to compromise potential commercial interests. In this case though, Bottrill said a deal could not have been struck as the site was only just rezoned Monday. “We couldn’t possibly have concluded negotiations because the property wasn’t even rezoned at the time to do that,” he said. “This gives us the flexibility to do that.”

When a lease deal is to be made though, it will be made public during a regular council meeting, he noted. Fathers, however, finds the whole process to be one big mess. “The whole thing has been sketchy at best,” said Fathers. “I don’t see the rationale behind this.”

St. Patrick’s Day festival approved
Ottawa gives $250K for abused women
Christopher Poon
SURREY – In an effort to address violence against women in Surrey, the federal government has donated $250,000 to the Surrey Women’s Centre (SWC) Society to improve services for females who have experienced physical and sexual assault. The funding was announced Friday at a press conference by Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, along with Fleetwood-Port Kells MP Nina Grewal. The SWC, located in Whalley, offers counselling services to victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault and other forms of violence. The $250,000 will go toward increasing medical, legal and social intervention for victims. According to the SWC’s website, women who are assaulted are less likely to report the violence to the police or seek medical treatment than victims of other crimes. “Most women suffer silently or rely on family and friends for support,” reads the site. “Too often many are left without the immediate emotional support and practical assistance they desperately need.” Since 2007, more than $62 million has been approved by the federal government for projects to end violence against women.

WHITE ROCK – A proposal to hold a St. Patrick’s Day festival complete with a beer garden and use of the Pier Head parking lot was given the green light at Monday’s council meeting. Brought forth by Peter McDonough of Jimmy Flynn’s Celtic Snug, the proposed festival was initially denied by council, but brought back for reconsideration after McDonough altered his plans. Originally McDonough had requested the use of the parking lot for three days, but has since scaled that down to two. As well, he has collected written letters of support from the business owners along Marine Drive who would be most impacted by the parking lot closure and support from the White Rock BIA and Tourism White Rock. In light of these additions, council reconsidered McDonough’s request and found it to be satisfactory, though not without security concerns. “My concern is not with the parking lot but are RCMP going to be in control of back and forths on Marine Drive? Do they intend to have own security or who’s
Council has given the green light for a St. Patrick’s Day festival, organized by Peter McDonough of Jimmy Flynn’s Celtic Snug. (Photo: KEVIN HILL) taking care of that?” wondered Coun. Alan Campbell. Eric Stepura, director of leisure services, said the proponent is required to provide security for any special occasions licence and noted RCMP would also likely have to bring in extra officers for the event. Festival details, as outlined by McDonough include a setup using a large covered carnival tent, the Pier Head parking lot being being blocked off from March 16 to early March 18, with the
festival taking place all day on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. An outdoor beer garden will also be in effect from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on St. Pattie’s. McDonough also notes the estimated crowd size for the event would be up to 300 people and tickets would be presold in order to control crowd size. Coun. Helen Fathers said the festival is a great idea to get people coming to White Rock in the usually slow month of March. cpoon@thenownewspaper.com

WHITE ROCK — Representatives of Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) were in attendance Monday to speak with council about the port’s businesses in relation to White Rock and how the potential Fraser Surrey Docks (FSD) coal terminal could impact the city. Peter Xotta, PMV’s vice-president of planning and operations, and Darrell Desjardin, director of environment and sustainability were on hand to present some information and take questions about port business that would affect White Rock, particularly the proposed FSD coal terminal. Coun. Grant Meyer took the opportunity to ask Xotta about concerns from the two chief provincial health officers, who had previously stated the environmental impact assessment (EIA) conducted by FSD fell far short of an adequate health assessment. For his part, Xotta said, “We’ve had a number of different engagements with the medical health officers of the region and we have, as a result, given some direction
to FSD and are in the process of reviewing both the EIA and feedback we received through the consultation period. “If shortcomings are validated through that process, we will be asking them to do additional work.” Coun. Louise Hutchinson wondered why PMV was still considering the project at all, as it appeared there was little benefit in transporting U.S. coal through Canada just to ship it to China. “There is a substantial amount of trade between Canada and the USA that is facilitated by different facilities on the West Coast... but it’s difficult for us to consider that in the context of our assessment,” said Xotta. “We couldn’t decline it because it originates in the United States.” If approved, the FSD coal terminal would see a total of 320 coal trains per year passing through White Rock within four years. PMV is in the process of making a decision following a feedback period that ended in mid-December. Last month, PMV CEO Robin Silvester said a decision on the coal terminal is expected “reasonably soon.”

Rotten tomatoes to the costume designer for the Cinderella Panto at the Surrey Arts Centre. The booty panties and fishnet stockings for the prince and his assistant (played by young women) were completely inappropriate. As they danced you could see their cheeks as their coats didn’t even cover up their bums. I was completely disgusted. Thanks for wrecking a family-friendly tradition.

Rotten tomatoes to the father who, after being asked to refrain from smoking on the White Rock pier for the sake of the children on the pier, replied, “It’s OK, the kids are my children.” I expect we will see him on the news smoking outside the courthouse when his kids are older and have the same attitude as their father. A bunch of roses to the Hallmark customer who, after making his purchase, came back to the store with coffees for the staff. Single-party council turbulence ViewFrom TheCheap Seats Michael Booth

I
n the bad old days of the Soviet Union, gleaning information on the workings of the ruling communist party was a task best suited to cryptographers and the readers of tea leaves. Official statements were pretty much useless since everybody toed the party line at the risk of a one-way ticket to a gulag in Siberia. With this in mind, Western analysts were left to decode the shifts in the communist power structure through clues provided by newscasts and press releases. The seating chart for the annual May Day parade in Red Square revealed who was a rising star and who was dropping out of favour. The closer you sat to the president, the higher your status. If you moved from the front row to the back row, that was a good indication your status had
diminished. The most telling statement that a president had died and a change of power was imminent came when all programming on Soviet television was pre-empted in favour of orchestral music. Gleaning information from single-party governments is never easy. The Soviet Union provides the best examples but similar circumstances with single-party governments exist in places like North Korea, China, Iran and, of course, Surrey city council. For the past two years, the Surrey First slate has held an iron grip on the keys to the council chamber, thanks to electoral results that handed the group every seat on the business side of the room, including the mayor’s chair. When questioned about the dangers of having one party holding every seat on council, Surrey First members sing a remarkably similar tune: “We’re not really a party, we’re actually a coalition of independent councillors who are free to speak and act as we wish. Here, try some of this delicious Kool-Aid.” Independent, codependent – whatever you want to call it, this shiny, happy coalition worked
well on the surface for a year or so, but in the last several months, signs have emerged that all is not well in the Surrey First electoral paradise. It’s hard to pin down exactly what is unfolding behind closed doors, but something is definitely afoot. On the main stage, we have Mayor Dianne Watts behaving oddly. For the first seven years on the job as the city’s mayor, Watts built a solid reputation as a strong leader with an astute knack for staying one step ahead of trouble. Not so much any more. In the last three months, her worship has made some very unWattslike errors. First she showed she was dancing to a different soundtrack than Surrey council on the matter of rail relocation in South Surrey. Another eyebrow raiser came in the wake of the Julie Paskall murder in Newton, when Watts refused to address safety in the community, dismissing it as
a “conversation for another time.” The latest Watts slip up arose when it was revealed the mayor clicked “like” on social media posts attacking Surrey First Coun. Barinder Rasode. Not once, but four times. Watts claimed the clicking was done in error, but the emotionally and intellectually engaged Dianne Watts who occupied the mayor’s chair from 2005 to 2012 would not have made such an “error.” While all of this is going on, Surrey First members have suddenly developed a love for microphones and television cameras. Coun. Tom Gill broke his self-imposed vow of silence to lead a spirited verbal attack on New Westminster over the issue of the replacement of the Pattullo Bridge. Coun. Marvin Hunt is currently wearing two hats as Surrey councillor and provincial MLA and refuses to relinquish hold on either.
Rasode has undergone a remarkable personality change in the last six months. After years of posting feel good nonsense about sunshine, lollipops and rainbows everywhere in Surrey, Rasode is suddenly the voice of the people demanding action on so many issues she has been accused of grandstanding. So we have a disengaged Watts leading a group of “independents” who are suddenly working too hard to increase their public profiles. Interesting developments to be sure and it leads one to conclude there are two possible plots at work here. The first conclusion is that a split is in the works that will see a new political party created to challenge Surrey First in November’s civic election. Rasode herself denies this and says she is proud to be a member of Surrey First – here, have some more Kool-Aid – and is definitely not looking to start a new
party. Her public statements, however, are increasingly at odds with her colleagues, which suggests she may be sipping on the sugar-free version of the Surrey First beverage of choice. The second conclusion is that Watts has checked out and is just putting in time until her term is up. If she doesn’t choose to run again then the current flurry of activity is actually a race for the throne with councillors striving to puff up their images ahead of a charge at the mayor’s chair. It’s hard to tell what’s really happening behind the scenes given the remarkably similar messages of unity from these “independent” councillors. Watts told the Now’s Amy Reid Wednesday she plans on running again, but my goodness, the orchestra music is getting kind of loud, don’t you think? Surrey’s silent mayor is failing Newton The Editor, Re: “Adversity is exhausting our city,” the Now, Jan. 9. The tragic death of Julie Paskall is almost too painful to bear. However, the citizens of Surrey have come together in a show of support and respect for themselves and everyone who calls Surrey home. Voices that would normally have remained silent are speaking out. No idea or suggestion is too small or unimportant. Where a troubled community might be forgiven for lashing out, they have not. Rather, they have come together asking intelligent questions, seeking support and solutions. The support they need has not yet come from our civic leaders. I am the first to admit that I do not always agree with Coun. Barinder Rasode. However, she and others deserve our respect for meeting this challenge head on and for going it alone. Many are surprised that the mayor and most of council have been silent on Newton. Perhaps it is convenient to blame hired consultants for “managing the news” for saying things not meant to be said. One thing is for sure, many of Dianne Watts’ supporters are asking questions about her judgment and leadership. Additionally, veteran councillors cannot continue to sit idly by doing nothing. I hope this mayor and council find their voices and establish their footing quickly. They need to act assertively and meet this challenge. If they don’t, this administration will be forever known as the most popular failure the City of Surrey has ever known. M. Proskow, Surrey
Surrey’s old problems are still unresolved
Finally, someone says it like it is! Frustration with the state of the city is palpable. The growth is out of control, the crime is out of control, the good kids have no pride in the city – it’s all so obvious even Beau Simpson’s seven-year-old son Noah can sense it. My kids also put a distancing spin on where they live – better to be from Cloverdale or Panorama Ridge than Surrey. Surrey brags about its ridiculous growth, while our schools and health-care facilities are overflowing, the community centres are dark and unsafe, and the decades-old problems are as prevalent as ever. For example, how many cops’ salaries could be paid if the city got on top of the 20-year-old illegal suite fiasco? As the Sun recently reported, Ministry of Health statistics show there are 55 registered recovery homes in B.C., of which 30 are in Surrey. Yes, that’s right, more than 50 per cent fare in Surrey. Why is that? Who allows that? Don’t forget, that’s in addition to the estimated 67 unregistered homes. Really? While Dianne Watts has been a great PR person for Surrey, I think Surrey is sameold, same-old, just more of it – plus one shiny new “central” city hall. I am also frustrated with the state of the city and finding it very difficult to be proud of Surrey. I agree with the Now’s editor – there needs to be a new direction focusing on sustainability and managing our growth. Jenny MacLean, Surrey
Forget RCMP, Surrey needs own police force The Editor, Re: “Adversity is exhausting our city,” the Now, Jan. 9. The number-one priority of our mayor and council should be our safety – and we all know this is not the case. If we want to fix this, we need our own police force. The

Bizarre letter is only thing fanning flames The Editor, Re: “Rasode’s flame-fanning after murder disgusting,” the Now letters, Jan. 9. I was puzzled and annoyed by the letter from A.G. (Alex) Tsakumis of Vancouver. I take quite a different view of Coun. Rasode’s statements admitting that Surrey needs to do more. I don’t believe Mayor Dianne Watts or the other councillors would disagree with her. I believe that our mayor and council, Surrey Crime Prevention, the RCMP and many other caring engaged groups and individuals are doing their best to work together to reduce crime in our city and that they would all agree that, notwithstanding the successes achieved, there will always be room for improvement. The suggestion that Rasode’s comments are “alarmist or flame-fanning” is very bizarre. By stating that more needs to be done, she is opening the door to dialogue and change. As a resident of Surrey, I would suggest that Tsakumis, who lives in Vancouver, is the one doing the flame-fanning. Linda Stromberg, Surrey
Dog park in Newton is one fantastic idea The Editor, Re: “Off-leash dog park might help in Newton,” the Now letters, Jan. 9.
While I don’t live in the Newton area, I do shop and use the local businesses on a regular basis. I’ve always considered the area between the pool and ice rink a less-thandesirable area in need of improvement, not only in terms of safety but in appearance. However, I do like reader Pauline Grant’s idea of an off-leash dog park near the stand of tall firs. Personally, I feel the trees are the only aesthetic feature of this area and rather than destroying this small urban green space, it would make sense to attract more foot traffic and create a community space, rather than making us fearful for our safety and avoiding the Newton area entirely. I hope that Surrey’s mayor, council and the Newton Community Assocation will consider this recommendation. Robyn Moore, Delta
Ward system would give Newton an ally The Editor, Re: “Surrey to hold safety meeting,” the Now, Jan. 7. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts told the Now that she believes higher levels of government need to help in regulating recovery houses in our city. This didn’t stop Watts and her council going against their own city planners, when they pushed through the “Welcome Home” facility in Newton that will house 200 recovering addicts. The residents of Newton stood up against this, but it was pushed through – perhaps because Newton has no councillor representing it. Watts has stated before she is against the ward system where each area would have a representative. She believes it creates “infighting.” It’s true. Without a ward system, there is no in-fighting – councillors can be unanimous in dumping on Newton with impunity. M. Laidlaw, Newton

Classical concerts new to church Afternoon series brings pianist and others to White Rock

WHITE ROCK — When Eugene Skovorodnikov first sat down to play the piano in the sanctuary at First United Church, it felt right. “It’s a fantastic space for music,” said the Ukrainian-born musician, who was raised in the former Soviet Union. “I feel that the beautiful reverb that comes from this space is natural, it’s not overwhelming. Sometimes in churches, it gives what we call wet acoustics, because it’s just too much reverb. But this space, it’s nice, a decent size, you can hear yourself, and the musician isn’t overwhelmed by the reverb.” The 350-seat facility, built in the 1950s with a wooden ceiling that reaches a peak high above the pews, will play host to a new concert series planned by Skovorodnikov and others. The well-travelled pianist and his Music Encore Concert Society has partnered with Peninsula Productions to create Encore Peninsula Concerts, devoted to the sounds of classical music on Sunday afternoons starting Feb. 2. One-hour concerts at 3 p.m., featuring duos and solo performers, will be held monthly at the church, ending for the season on May 4. “We want something like this to continue, of course,” Skovorodnikov said as Wendy Bollard, artistic

It all came together not long ago, and I’m so happy it did. director of Peninsula Productions, nodded in agreement. “It’s been really exciting to see the reaction to this concert series since it was announced (late last month),” Bollard added. “We use MailChimp for our emailed newsletters, and we can track how many opens we get, how many clicks, all that stuff, and we know people are looking at what we’re doing here.” Bollard says the people of White Rock and Surrey – and beyond – are eager to see and hear classical music in concert. “With classical music here, there really isn’t anything like this except with George Zukerman and White
Rock Concerts, and they’ve been completely sold out for a long time. There are lots of people who can’t get to those shows, and many of those people also don’t want to travel downtown to hear fantastic music. So when Eugene came to us with this, it was a no-brainer.” Skovorodnikov arrived in Canada from Russia, via Italy, in 1991. “It was Jan. 18 – a blessed day,” he said with a smile. “It was in the middle of a huge storm in Toronto, and we landed there but couldn’t take off again for Vancouver, so we had to wait for that until the following day. Seriously, it was fantastic. The best decision I ever made in my life was to come to Canada.” Audiences around the world have applauded Skovorodnikov for his stylistic interpretation and technical brilliance. Two years ago, he moved to the South Surrey area from Richmond, where he founded Vancouver International School of
Music in 2009; a satellite campus has since opened in South Surrey. When he moved to the Semiahmoo Peninsula, he sought guidance from staff at the City of White Rock to launch a concert series in the area, and he was referred to the Peninsula Productions team of Bollard and company president Geoff Giffin. “It all came together not long ago, and I’m so happy it did,” Skovorodnikov said. “All of these people are so organized and on the ball, so efficient and wonderful to work with. In good time, everything got done.” The first concert in the series will feature Skovorodnikov and violinist Yuri Zaidenberg. Tickets are $15/$25 per concert, or $50/$80 for the four-concert series. More details are online at www. peninsulaproductions.org or by calling 604-541-2199.

SURREY — As anyone who’s hosted a dinner would know, it takes a lot of planning and preparation to get everything ready for a handful of people coming over. But how about hosting an event that attracts about 100,000 people? The City of Surrey and John Donnelly & Associates do it every year. As one of Canada’s largest multicultural celebrations, the two-day Fusion Festival that takes over Holland Park every July is no easy feat to set up. The festival boasts more than 75 artists and performers from across the globe, along with nearly 40 cultural pavilions, a parade and various all-ages activities. “In the fall, we’re looking at headline entertainment for the following year,” said Mary Rukavina, manager of special events and filming with the City of Surrey. “It’s an ongoing, yearlong process.” A lot goes into the production of big concerts and festivals: Organizers have to take into account parking, concessions, merchandise sales, security and first aid. But Rukavina noted there are other more subtle concerns that the public might not think about. “We look at all the little things that might not be so obvious to the public,” she said, listing the location of washrooms and information booths, placement of signage and preparations for poor weather as considerations for planners. In addition, hosting
Los Lobos performs at Surrey’s Fusion Festival in 2012. (Photo: JACOB ZINN) the Fusion Festival can be rather expensive. Rukavina attributed the funding from corporate sponsors as the reason why the city can afford to hold such a large cultural bash year after year. She also credited the hundreds of volunteers who give their time to set up and take down the four stages and dozens of pavilions. “Without the volunteers, we would not be able to put on this event.” But all the hard work pays off: The city and John Donnelly & Associates took home the award for Best Fair/Festival from Special Events magazine at an awards gala last Friday in Nashville, Tenn. Fusion Fest beat out the TD Toronto Jazz Festival and Harrisburg, N.C.’s Democratic National Convention Carolina Fest for the title. “We’re just thrilled to be able to produce this event for, and with, the City of Surrey,” said John Donnelly, president of John Donnelly & Associates. “It’s just fantastic that it’s being recognized at an international level.” With the seventh Fusion Fest about six months away, Rukavina said she’s looking forward to the 2014 edition. She added that the award brings things full circle to the roots of the yearly affair. “Years ago, when this event came to be, there was a tagline that was put under the title Fusion Festival: ‘the ultimate celebration of music, food and culture,’” she said. “It just proves that we are able to put on world-class events, and it shows how much the city is diverse.”

Annual ‘South End Summit’ concert unites talented teens TheBuzz Tom Zillich Arts & Life Editor
S
outh End Summit, the annual gathering of talented teen musicians on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, returns this Saturday night, Jan. 18. The fourth annual edition of the concert
will again fill Earl Marriott Secondary’s Wheelhouse Theatre with the sounds of big bands from that school along with those from Elgin Park and Semiahmoo. The ticketed event ($19 for adults, $14 for students and seniors) showcases some fine young players in a celebratory setting. The evening’s guest is Cory Weeds, a Burnaby-based saxophonist who operates the Cellar jazz club in Vancouver. “There’s a lot of talented kids who come out of Surrey, so yeah, I’m excited about
being there,” Weeds said. “It’s always fun to play with kids because they’re all wide-eyed and excited and enthusiastic about what they’re doing, so I’m happy to be part of it.” Sadly, Weeds will close the Cellar doors Cory Weeds for good at February’s end, leaving a void on the local jazz scene.
“I’ve been battling pretty hard for 13 years to keep the Cellar going, but it’s just time to get out for awhile and step back,” Weeds said. “The location was an uphill battle in many respects, with landlord and lease issues, too.” At South End Summit, another special guest will be iconic bandleader Dal Richards, 96, to whom the bands will pay tribute. Show tickets are available at Tapestry music store in White Rock. For details, visit semiahmooarts.com or call 604-536-8333.

hat makes a person decide to become an artist, a dancer, a musician, a teacher, or anything else for that matter? It is one of life’s difficult tasks to find something you can do, love to do, and perhaps can make a living at it – eventually. Finding a career in the cultural sector is not always a straightforward task. How do you even know what opportunities are out there? Surrey Museum is hosting a cultural career conference for youth. This free interactive conference is an opportunity for local youth to gain a better understanding of careers available to them in the arts and heritage fields. Find out if you would like to work in a museum, or have a career in the visual or performing arts. This cultural careers conference is for people age 16 to 20 and happens on Feb. 8 at the museum, located in Cloverdale. The deadline for registration is Jan. 31, so the time is short to make a decision, and space is definitely limited. Information on conference workshops can be found at www.surrey.ca/ heritageyouth. To register for this interactive and free oneday conference, phone 604592-6956. Take advantage of this great opportunity.

“An artist must be able to create significant imagery with the simplest of tools, otherwise the artist is a slave to technology.” This is one of artist Jim Adams’ favourite quotes. He said it himself and I can see how this thought has influenced and inspired his legion of students he has mentored over 40 years. Adams is almost a celebrity in Surrey. He was
chair of the Festival of the Arts when it made its final bow – in Surrey – and has also been designated as one of Surrey’s Civic Treasures. His retirement as a fine arts professor at Kwantlen should have given him some free time to do other things now, like paint. Adams also apparently reads this column and sent me a request. He said, “I would appreciate it if you would pass on my congratulations to Daniel (Tibbits) for me. He is a former student of mine at Kwantlen and I’m glad to see that he’s doing so well. Forward my congratulations.” Tibbits was the subject of last week’s column and is now considered “an artist to collect” by a noted art magazine. So, Daniel your prof is proud of you, and Jim, I forwarded the message. Now everyone knows what treasures we have in our community.
‘TALES AND TREASURES’
For textile and costume artists, the Society of the Museum of Original Costumes (SMOC) is a fascinating organization. Not only is SMOC devoted to establishing a permanent museum for historical and ethnic costume and textiles in Vancouver, it also offers educational fashion lectures, shows and events. The group’s next event is “Tales and Treasures from the SMOC Collection,” on Sunday, Jan. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Hycroft ballroom, 1489 McRae Ave., Vancouver. Tickets range from $10 to $22; you will be treated to highlights of the very best and most fascinating of the collection’s recent acquisitions – you know, history through fashion. Tickets are available online at www.smoc.ca and also at the door. We weren’t always livin’ in blue jeans and yoga pants. Go figure.

Crusaders prove their worth in Coquitlam Michael Booth
Now staff Twitter @boothnow
If the Holy Cross Crusaders wondered if their move from class AA to the heavyweight class AAAA division was the right decision, they have no such qualms today after a stellar showing in Coquitlam’s prestigious Legal Beagle senior boys basketball tourney last weekend. The fourth-ranked Crusaders knocked off a pair of top-10 opponents before falling in the title game to Coquitlam’s Gleneagle Talons (ranked ninth). “It’s one of the best tournaments in the province,” said Holy Cross coach Matt Lechasseur. “Most of the top teams were there so it was very competitive. It was a great weekend of the basketball and the kids all played hard. “The guys wanted to win it — they expected to win it. We know we can play at this level and I think the guys are starting to buy into the style of play we want to play and what’s going to make us successful. We came up short at the end, but it was still a good weekend for us.” Holy Cross opened the festivities with a solid 64-58 win over the Burnaby South Rebels. Point guard Jauquin Bennett-Boire led the charge with 17 points and 12 assists, while Henry Maduabueke and Jonathan Kongbo helped out the Holy Cross cause with 15 and 13 points, respectively. The Crusaders passed a big test in Friday’s semifinal round as they overcame a raucous crowd and some silly errors late in the contest to prevail 74-65 over the host Terry Fox Ravens. “It was a real hostile environment — it was pretty crazy,” Lechasseur
said. “We made a bunch of mistakes at the end of regulation that really hurt us. We were up by six with a minute and a half left, but if you can think of any mistakes that can be made at the end of a game, we made them. Passes going through guys’ hands, bad fouls and things like that. The good thing was we regrouped in overtime and made the plays down the stretch to pull out the win.” Maduabueke was the top Crusader on the scoresheet with 23 points, while Bennett-Boire added another 17. The Crusaders’ run to the final ended in disappointment Saturday as another Coquitlam school, Gleneagle, picked up where the Ravens left off and posted a 59-52 win. Bennett-Boire paced the Crusaders attack with 17 points while Maduabueke finished with 13. “That was a tough game,” Lechasseur said. “Gleneagle has a very good team and they stay out of foul trouble, which is something we struggled with. Taylor Browne was in foul trouble for most of the weekend and that kind of hurt us. He’s a big part of our team and when he comes out of the game early, we kind of lose the flow of the game. We were within three with two minutes left and then they hit some free throws and that was that.” The Crusaders will be back on their home court in Fleetwood this weekend when they attempt to defend their title at the B.C. Catholics Championships. The championship finals are set for Saturday with senior girls tipping off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.

A January road trip to Prince George doesn’t make anybody’s dream list of weekend getaways, but it may have been a good thing for the Surrey Eagles. With new faces in unfamiliar places, the defending B.C. Hockey League champions managed to scrape up a single point from two games with the host Spruce Kings. Prince George won the opener Friday 6-3 and then needed overtime to subdue the Eagles 4-3 the following night. Fresh off a flurry of deal at the BCHL’s trade deadline that saw two veteran leaders shipped out in exchange for promising younger forwards, a two-game set in the league’s northernmost outpost was an opportunity for the new players to gel with the rest of the flock. “That road trip was good for us as a team just for guys to get to know each other a bit better,” said Eagles coach Peter Schaefer. “We have some new faces and see EAGLES › page 31

Surrey teams in hunt for first place in premier ranks It’s getting crowded at the top of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League premier standings and two Surrey teams are in the thick of the hunt for the highest rung on the ladder. Defending provincial champion Surrey United Firefighters and Newton’s CCB-RT United both posted wins last weekend to join a pack of six teams clustered within three points of first place in the league table. West Van leads the way with 27 points, one ahead of three teams — including the Firemen — knotted at 26 in second spot. CCB-RT sits three points off the pace in sixth place, one win coupled with fortuitous results elsewhere, could vault United into a share of first. On the pitch last weekend, CCB-RT posted one of their biggest wins of the season when they
knocked Vancouver’s Columbus out of first place with 3-1 decision at Newton Athletic Park. United seized control of the proceedings with two quick goals in the first 15 minutes of play. Nick Soolsma started things off in the 10th minute when he delivered a crossing pass to Sameer Grewal who launched a hard shot that was too hard for the Columbus goalkeeper to handle. Five minutes later Soolsma was at it again, this time intercepting a clearance attempt by the Columbus keeper. Soolsma made him pay for the error as he raced in unchecked and tapped the ball into the unguarded net to doubled United’s advantage. Columbus tried to respond and managed to create several stellar scoring chances only to be

The guys were communicating and having fun and that’s definitely a positive for us.” The two teams opened the weekend Friday where the Spruce Kings rattled off four straight goals to build an insurmountable 5-1 advantage before the third period was two minutes old. Surrey scored a pair of goals to cut the gap to two only to have the hosts ice the match with an empty netter. Newcomers Chase McMurphy and Anthony Conti each scored once for the Eagles, while Nathan Renouf chipped in with a
third period power-play marker. Saturday’s rematch featured a thrilling finish to regulation with both teams scoring in the final 91 seconds. The Spruce Kings’ second goal of the period put the home team up 3-2, but the Eagles battled back and forced overtime with a goal from rookie Danton Heinen with 26 seconds left. Prince George forward and Surrey native Justin Rai spoiled the Eagles comeback when he completed his hat trick with the winning goal in the extra session. Quinn Lenihan and Kale Bennett also scored for Surrey.

repeatedly foiled by United goalkeeper Luke O’Shea. The visitors cranked up the pressure in the second half and their efforts were rewarded in the 70th minute when they finally put a ball past O’Shea. Columbus pressed for the equalizer, but
United managed to bag an insurance goal late in regulation when Bobby Jhutty finished off a nifty passing play with Soolsma. Saturday afternoon it was the Surrey United’s turn to pick up three critical points when they prevailed 1-0 against Newton’s
ICST Pegasus in the latest installment of the Surrey Derby rivalry at Cloverdale Athletic Park. The Firemen scored the only goal they would need in the 65th minute when David Adams collected a well-placed pass from Brad Peetoom and then
sidestepped a Pegasus defender before slotting the ball home from the edge of the box. The Horsemen pushed back late in the game but their best chance ended poorly when Azad Palani’s shot caromed harmlessly off the crossbar.
