METRO VANCOUVER — Strong words were exchanged during a sit down between councillors from New Westminster and Surrey regarding the future of the Pattullo Bridge.

New Westminster Coun. Jonathan Cote made the trip across the river to attend Surrey’s transportation and infrastructure committee meeting Monday.

Cote presented his city’s position in support of a new, tolled four-lane structure, while Surrey is still adamantly pushing for six, which are expected to cost roughly $800 million and more than $1 billion, respectively.

The Pattullo being the free alternative has “been a disaster” in terms of road congestion since the Port Mann tolls were rolled out, he stressed.

SURREY — Following a recent announcement that the Ministry of Education would be downloading the costs of seismic upgrades to school districts, Surrey board of education chair Shawn Wilson wants the province to take a “second sober look” at the idea.

According to Wilson, the plan to have school districts Shawn Wilson with surplus funds contribute up to half of the funding for seismic upgrades is disingenuous, as most, if not all district, don’t actually have extra funds sitting around.

“I think it sent shockwaves through most, if not all of the school districts including Surrey because what they’re calling surplus is a little misleading,” said Wilson. “For example, if you budget money for snow removal and it doesn’t snow, that’s money that’s gone unspent, but instead of putting that money in the bank to collect interest, what we do is wind up using that money to offset the next year’s deficit.” see SCHOOL › page 8

Recycling plan ‘has no accountability’ Surrey garden centre expects province’s controversial program will cost it $20K a year

NEWTON — The manager of a Surrey garden centre expects a cost of nearly $20,000 per year to his business in relation to the province’s new recycling program, Multi Material BC. The province approved MMBC in 2013 as B.C.’s “extended-responsibility” entity to shift the responsibility for recycling product packaging to industry.

Miles Hunter, general manager of David Hunter Garden Centers, anticipates he will have to pay $3,000 to $5,000 in fees to the program every year, but the real kicker is the estimated $10,000 to $15,000 he’ll have to spend annually to pay someone to calculate what he’ll owe.

“On a daily basis, my office administrator, who is my mother right now, is going to have to go through every invoice line by line, item by item, and determine whether we have to pay a fee on it and how much that is going to be,” Hunter explained.

Hunter said there were some discussions about businesses recycling their own materials.

“We recycle a lot of pots here. We accept them back from our customers and we send them to recycling facilities to be recycled,” he said, adding that he was on board with doing so himself.

“Unfortunately, the legislation said it had to submit a plan to the government guaranteeing that you’re going to be able to reclaim 75 per cent of the material that you put out to consumers. I’m sorry, but that’s just not possible.”

And Hunter said there’s a long list of items he’ll have to pay fees for.

Naturally, as a garden centre, the biggest ticket item will be plastic pots.

“We’ll have to pay for the pot, the little information tag that comes with the plant identifying the variety and how to grow it.

So that’s probably our biggest part,” he said.

“Our company has been around for 60 years, and when we started, plants were sold

in metal tin containers. So plastic pots were a significant improvement on that. There are some products that we sell in paper pots, but they don’t last long enough for the life of a plant to be grown and raised.

So there are little to no alternatives for packaging plants to sell to consumers.

“So in terms of the government’s goal to try and reduce the packaging on products, I don’t think that’s possible for many of these pots. A plant has to have some kind of pot holding it when you sell it to the customer.”

But there’s a plethora of other items he will have to hand over money for, including packaging for products such as fertilizer, cardboard flats used by customers to transport plants and even things like cash register receipts and information brochures.

“I can’t imagine the administration required for me to keep track of the paper that I use to print information brochures. I buy a box of paper from Staples, and I use it to print invoices and all sorts of different things, and some small percentage gets used to print information brochures. How am I supposed to calculate that?” Hunter asked.

As well, the company has David Hunter Garden Centers branded potting soil, so it will be responsible for all those bags as well.

When you delve into everything, it really starts to add up, he said.

Hunter also expressed concern over weights laid out in an MMBC worksheet – weights he says are not necessarily accurate.

“How do I accurately calculate my total weight of plastic that I contribute if these weights are wrong? Is there recourse for me to weigh my pots and say my pots weigh 100 grams, not 150 grams? As far as I can see, this program has no accountability.

There’s no incentive for Multi Material BC to provide good customer service,” Hunter said.

Exemptions are yet another concern.

Under the new regulation, businesses with less than $1 million in revenue, which distribute less than one tonne of packaging to consumers or are a single-location operation, will be exempt from registering with the program.

“So if you’re a retail location that does $10 million in sales, you’re still exempt because you have one location. We have two stores – one in Vancouver and one in Surrey – and because of that, we’re not exempt.

There are other garden centres that have a single retail location that will be exempt.

That makes our company less competitive.”

As well, Hunter doesn’t believe there’s a clear picture of who is responsible for paying what.

I think it will cost a lot of money, which will cost jobs.

“They talk about the producers and when we are buying from a nursery here in B.C., that person is considered the producer.

They’re supposed to pay the fee,” Hunter said. “I’ve got suppliers saying to me, ‘No, no, no. I don’t have to pay.’ So if I buy those products and sell those products and somebody comes back and audits me three years later and says, ‘That company didn’t pay so you have to pay it.’”

He finds himself increasingly frustrated, and said as far as he can see, there’s not enough clarity for businesses in terms of how the program will play out.

And Hunter noted that the cost to businesses makes a much bigger impact than if households were to absorb the costs.

“There’s a lot of number being thrown

around right now. One is that the average homeowner pays $200 to $300 for garbage and recycling and if we’re saying it’s going to cost the average business $3,000 to $5,000 – if you took an extra $10 to $15 per household, you’d pay for all of this,” he said.

BUSINESS GROUPS OPPOSED

Opposition continues to mount over the new recycling program.

The Surrey Board of Trade and the South Surrey & White Rock Chamber of Commerce have come out against the program, citing the potential hardships it poses to businesses.

Anita Huberman, CEO of the SBoT, said there are considerable concerns with the way the program has been rolled out.

“We’re concerned that the financial and administrative impact on business will result in much higher fees required to comply with the law, or administrative loads necessary to comply with these additional levels of red tape. This will increase the cost to business and, in effect, our economy,” she said.

The SBoT urges the province to impose a delay in the program, or stop it altogether.

Cliff Annable, executive director of the chamber, said there will be huge costs to many businesses.

“I don’t think they thought this through,” Annable said of the government. “So simply, we as a chamber cannot support the program as it now stands. I think it will cost a lot of money, which will cost jobs.”

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is also asking the province to rethink the plan.

Meanwhile, the cities of White Rock and Surrey have signed a Multi Material BC recycling contract, while Delta has deferred participation to have an opportunity to look into the plan’s “true cost.”

The program is set to roll out on May 19.

Cote said he hears from residents that they don’t feel safe on roads they previously did. He added that without significant investment in road creation there’s not much that can be done to the Royal City’s road network.

“We already have over 450,000 vehicles travelling through our city (daily),” he said.

And New Westminster reports state the tolling of the Port Mann Bridge has already led to 6,000 more crossings per day.

New Westminster doesn’t see the future demand for a larger Pattullo, Cote said, but rather says increased traffic should be on the Port Mann.

“A lot of this traffic was really intended to be focused on a highway network,” he said of truck traffic on the bridge, and there was some discussion about New Westminster’s idea to ban said traffic on the structure.

He went on to say the city believes a bigger bridge is “not warranted, justified and we think it’s actually a waste of resources at this point in time.”

Cote was met with questions from Surrey about New Westminster’s recentlyreleased position paper – both as to why it was created outside of the discussions with TransLink and Surrey, and why the Royal City embarked on a tour to share it with other municipalities.

To that, Cote said the landscape changed, as the issue became more of a Metro Vancouver and mayors’ council decision.

“It wasn’t about pulling a fast one on the City of Surrey,” Cote noted.

“It was more about trying to develop an understanding of the issue as best we could.”

SIX LANES, NO TOLLS

Surrey Coun. Tom Gill, who chairs the transportation and infrastructure committee, strongly emphasized the city’s position that the bridge should be built with six lanes.

Gill said Surrey would support a phased opening of the increased lanes, until New Westminster was able to handle more traffic.

In response, Cote emphasized the city wouldn’t close the door on designing a structure with the flexibility to be upgraded in the future, but added, “There would be a lot of skepticism from the New Westminster side if you had a bridge where all it would take is a removal of a barrier, and two weeks after opening could be easily switched to a six-lane bridge,” Cote said.

Surrey Coun. Barbara Steele took issue with New Westminster’s idea to toll a new Pattullo.

“It’s not that we would be upset, I think it would be a lot greater than that. We would be almost outraged,” Steele said.

She went on to say the Alex Fraser Bridge,

which hasn’t entered into the equation at all, would be the only way in and out of Surrey without having to pay tolls in such a scenario.

“That’s a little bit more than just being upset. That cuts us off Jonathan Cote from the region.”

Steele said bridges are meant to last more than 35 or 40 years.

“So to neglect putting the capability for six lanes to deal with the growth that’s going to be going on south of the Fraser would be nothing less than negligent. I think we have to recognize that the growth is here,” she said.

But Cote considers it more negligent to spend hundreds of millions of dollars today based on anticipated future road demands.

Cote said New Westminster is open to dialogue, but “the devil will be in the details.”

‘LET’S GET ON IT’

After New Westminster’s presentation, Surrey’s transportation manager Jaime Boan said costs of a new, six-lane structure were somewhat overstated in New Westminster’s position paper.

Boan said in the paper, the key negative aspect of the six-lane option was the lack of cost effectiveness, but said that was because of New Westminster’s request for a tunnelled new road underneath Royal Avenue across the entire city.

“So that is what put it into the not-costeffective category,” Boan said.

Boan also said a lot of steps have been taken in the past that have contributed to road congestion in the Royal City.

“The approach New Westminster has been taking over the past number of years is to try to divert the traffic elsewhere.

So for example, Royal Avenue two lanes were taken away and that has caused, of course, more congestion of Royal Avenue,” Boan said, adding that some past New Westminster decisions are “partially creating the issues and concerns that are being experienced now.”

After the meeting, Gill said he remains just as frustrated as he was going into it.

Gill worries that if New Westminster “continues to filibuster” that TransLink may not see any other option but to invest $300 million in upgrading the current structure.

A 2013 report from Metro Vancouver found that the Pattullo Bridge does not have adequate sidewalks or barriers for pedestrians and cyclists, and that the 76year-old bridge may not survive a moderate earthquake or ship collision.

“Let’s get on it. I’m not quite sure how many more people have to die on that bridge,” Gill said.

The BC Government is proposing to offload the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations.

The idea is that we’ll get a better, more efficient program that costs taxpayers less.

Unfortunately, what we’ll really end up with is anyone’s guess.

Currently, BC homeowners only pay, on average, $35 a year for curbside recycling. Under the proposed regime, you’ll pay more. Every time you bring home a pizza, buy toilet paper, or pretty much anything else that comes in a package, businesses will be passing their increased costs on to you.

How much more? Well, nobody’s saying.

The association isn’t guaranteeing that we’ll get a better program, or even one as good as the current Blue Box program already in place. Since the association is led by big businesses

FLEETWOOD — Neighbours are rallying to help those whose homes were ruined by fire.

A bottle drive this Saturday, April 12 is just one way people are trying to help residents of the Springfield Gardens townhouse complex, at 8717 159th St., Surrey.

Six families, including one without home insurance, were forced to move out of their homes because of significant damage caused by fire on Feb. 13.

The families are living elsewhere while the six units are being rebuilt, neighbour Lorena Cottrell told the Now. “As this is a devastating time for the families, we want to give them support to help them move forward,” she explained.

“Donations of clothing and food have been coming in, as well as furniture, however it is money to help with rent, strata fees and continuation of mortgage payments that is now the priority.”

To date, $3,205 has been raised via a GoFundMe initiative, online at www.

NEWTON — A 25-year-old Surrey man has been arrested and charged in relation to an “unprovoked, vicious attack” on a Coast Mountain bus operator.

At roughly 8 p.m. on March 26, the 341 Guildford bus picked up a man and woman on 72nd Avenue at 132nd Street in Surrey. Within minutes, the man allegedly punched the operator in the face before jumping off the bus.

The bus operator suffered a broken nose, broken bones in his face, continuing vision impairment in one eye and loosened teeth.

“At the time of the attack there were approximately 30 passengers onboard the bus,” said Transit Police spokeswoman Anne Drennan. “By the time police arrived, many had left the area. Investigators would very much like to speak to everyone on the bus at the time of the incident.”

Meantime, the Metro Vancouver Transit Police Crime Reduction Unit arrested a suspect in Newton on April 2 while he was driving a stolen vehicle.

Wilson said all of the other districts he’s aware of do the same, putting any unspent money toward the following year.

I

f the political winds blowing through Surrey city hall weren’t blustery enough, a voice from the past has roiled the air currents significantly.

The new city hall building is now open for business.

The assorted departments have made the move north from Highway 10 into the heart of Whalley World and on March 31, Surrey city council met for the first time in its new home.

The fancy new digs drew the expected “oohs” and “aahs” from those in attendance – with one notable exception: former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum.

McCallum, who lost to current Mayor Dianne Watts in the 2005 civic election, has largely stayed out of the public eye in the eight-plus years since his departure from city hall.

And yet there he was, popping by the new city hall to see what was happening because, after all, he had a meeting in the area. He professed that he didn’t even know the council meeting was the first ever in the new crown jewel pushed through

by his successor. An amazing coincidence, really.

Watts introduced McCallum at the meeting and at a break, Now reporter Amy Reid approached the former mayor and introduced herself. The two chatted briefly about the impressive new council chambers before McCallum moved on to talk with other people he knew in the room.

Before the break was over, McCallum returned to where Reid was sitting and resumed their conversation.

This time, however, McCallum had much more to say. The former mayor blasted the current civic leaders for the new city hall building, describing the structure as “wasted taxpayers’ money.”

McCallum said the money spent on the new building in Whalley – $97 million and counting – was too much and the impact of such spending would be felt in areas that are already underserved in terms of recreation and arts facilities.

But McCallum wasn’t done yet. He then proceeded to take aim at the Surrey City Development Corporation for a perceived conflict of interest in approving buildings the city would benefit from financially. He followed that up by stating his opposition to a SCDC project in South

Surrey that includes a pair of high-rise towers. The SCDC needs the towers included in the project to make it financially viable, a contention McCallum rejects saying the money would be available if the city hadn’t spent “over $100 million on city hall.”

Again, just random thoughts from a guy who dropped by on a whim to see what all the fuss was about.

His observations naturally led to a question about making another run for the mayor’s chair, but he laughed off such suggestions claiming he hadn’t thought about such a scenario.

And if you believe that, might I also interest you in purchasing a lovely fixer upper in Bridgeview known locally as the Pattullo Bridge?

Since then, McCallum has appeared for interviews on

at least two radio stations, and on April 8, he just happened to drop by a transit forum at SFU. Must have had a meeting in the area, no?

These are interesting times in Surrey city politics. Watts has now served three terms as mayor and is regarded by many pundits in British Columbia as somewhat of a golden child for whichever higher level of office – federal or provincial – that she opts to pursue. A move to Victoria is unlikely, given that we just held a provincial election last spring and the next vote won’t occur until 2017. The next federal election, however, is slated for October of 2015 and by golly, wouldn’t you know it, one of the safest Conservative seats west of Alberta is up for grabs.

Current MP Russ Hiebert has outworn his welcome in

the riding of South SurreyWhite Rock-Cloverdale and, rather than face challengers for the nomination in the riding, is taking his fat pension and riding off into the sunset.

At the same time, Surrey will hold elections in November for all eight council seats and the mayor’s chair. Watts’ Surrey First “coalition of independents” currently holds every seat on council and, despite some recent hiccups, are unlikely to be seriously challenged by the

left-leaning Surrey Matters party.

But what if another development-friendly party were to emerge to challenge the Surrey First team, minus the formidable Watts? That would certainly crank up the heat, especially if the new “coalition of independents” has a credible figurehead to lead the charge.

Like, say, a certain former mayor…

B.C. Chamber was one of earliest MMBC critics The Editor, Re: “CEO raises valid concerns about MMBC recycling program,” the Now editorial, March 27.

We appreciate your attention to the MMBC recycling program but we were disappointed to see such glaring errors of fact concerning the efforts of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce and our network of local chambers.

Your editorial accuses the B.C. Chamber of ignoring our members’ needs and of “rubberstamping” government policy.

This is false. It is regrettable that you rushed to press without more rigorous fact checking.

In fact, the B.C. Chamber, working closely with our network, was one of the MMBC program’s earliest and most dedicated critics. In close consultation with local chambers, we launched advocacy efforts in July 2013, calling for measures to mitigate impacts on B.C. businesses.

Before B.C.’s chambers took up this cause, MMBC had zero plans to bring in a small business policy and the recycling regulation on packaging and printed paper (PPP) had no exemptions to protect small

businesses. It was clear to us that B.C.’s smallest businesses faced not only fees but a nightmare of red tape.

As a direct result of our advocacy, this has changed. We were able to ensure that no business that earns less than $1 million annually will be captured in this program.

Similarly, no “Mom and Pop” shop will be captured. As well, no small producer of PPP (less than one tonne annually) will be captured.

These exemptions remove approximately 27,000 B.C. PPP producer businesses from the program, leaving only one per cent of all B.C. businesses affected. Moreover, we advocated, and achieved, having these exemptions enshrined in regulation – something that no other Canadian province has achieved for its small businesses on a PPP program.

Absolutely, we have thanked government for its responsiveness to our network’s needs. But we are not “rubberstamping” anything. We have identified additional problem areas, including the treatment of franchises and potential hardship to industries such as community newspapers.

Racism should be wrong for all, even for employers of minorities.

A Surrey metal recycling plant is crying wolf, using the “no-English” clause of their staff as their defence against local bylaw officers. Nobody should tolerate companies, corporations or industries whose hiring preferences are within a chosen minority group. Hire the best qualified Canadians – without discrimination or close the business! Isn’t that the law? Or is there some secret back door privileges for some?

An idea to keep trains silent in White Rock The Editor, I know a simple and inexpensive way to stop the trains blasting their horns at night through Crescent Beach and White Rock.

Instead of the City of White Rock spending $10 million to make changes that will not stop the train horn blasts, BNSF can be made to use one of its trucks with rail wheels and one of its workers to operate it 500 feet in front of the trains and clear the way for all their trains from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. Under this plan, the engineers would not have to blast their horns through the night.

They have the equipment and the staff already employed to do this. This is a simple and instant procedure.

SURREY — Out of all the types of music, rap is perhaps considered the most controversial, but some local artists are proving that the genre can be a healthy creative outlet.

Rick Kumar and Calvin Tiu, both 21, make up the Surreybased rap duo of Big Love and Kalvonix. They each got into rap for similar reasons, but took different paths in music before teaming up.

“I was bullied a lot in elementary school and I didn’t have a voice,” said Tiu, who has cerebral palsy and walks with crutches or uses a motorized wheelchair. “I was bullied due to the fact that I look different to my peers.

“People used to call me terrible things like ‘cripple’ or kick me down to the gravel, and it was those kind of things where I would totally shut down.”

In Grade 7, Tiu heard Eminem for the first time and was inspired by how the Detroit rapper took struggles in his life and turned them into music. He bought a journal and started writing raps based off of his experiences with bullying.

“I rehearsed them to my parents and they said, ‘Calvin, you should actually do this, you should start rapping,’” said Tiu. “It was an outlet for me to express my inner struggle.”

Kumar’s interest in rap came after he started writing poetry in his early years of high school. At the time, he wrote solely for himself, but broke out of his shell around the age of 15.

“I was a pretty shy kid in Grade 8 and 9 – any time there was a class photo, I was the guy in the back peeking through heads,” he said. “I get to Grade 10 and I’m like, ‘I’ve got to change my life.’”

After performing in a school play, Kumar and the rest of the cast were required to share their experiences with the production. Instead of just talking about the performance, he wrote a poem and recited it for his peers.

“I got into this flow and I didn’t understand what I was writing yet, and I put the paper down and look and there’s two girl’s crying,” he said, adding that his emotional poem inspired a classmate to call him Big Love, which stuck as his rap name.

From there, he moved into doing slam poetry and spoken word to spread his poems. Soon after, a mutual friend introduced Kumar to Tiu and the two started sharing their passion for live performance.

“Calvin was like, ‘Hey, man, I rap, you write poetry – we could create a link in between. Why don’t you start rapping?’”

The two are inspired by a wide range of artists, from

We wanted to show that rap is much more than just these negative, misogynistic ideas that we see on television. You can use it to learn, and that’s what we did. modern hip-hoppers like Kid Cudi to classic rock bands like Queen and Pink Floyd.

“You can’t pigeonhole your music,” said Kumar of his and Tiu’s musical tastes. “Music is the flow of life. You take it as it comes.”

Most recently, Kumar and Tiu have put together a collaborative album titled The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, as part of an assignment for an English class at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The duo wrote eight songs based off of children’s literature like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Where the Wild Things Are, as well as adult novels.

“I’m not going to lie, I hoped that maybe if I did a rap album, I wouldn’t have to write an essay,” said Tiu with a laugh.

The class also read Tweaked, a novel by a local author that deals with drug addiction. The 192-page paperback influenced the duo to write a song about the dangers of drug abuse.

“Rap already has a lot of history dealing with drug addiction and people talking about drugs, but I think people think of rap as a type of music that glorifies drugs, but we didn’t want to do that – we wanted to speak about addiction itself and give that a twist,” said Tiu. Kumar added that one of the goals of the album was to shatter the public’s negative perception of rap music by making something positive in the genre.

“People look at rap very negatively, and that was one of our focuses with creating this album. We wanted to show that rap is much more than just these negative, misogynistic ideas that we see on television.

“You can use it to learn, and that’s what we did.”

The cast features Dodi Barillec as Josephine, Mike Friesen as Ralph, Paul Beckett as the Captain, Breanna Branson as Buttercup, Kevin F. Hrankowski as Boatswain, Clive Ramroop as Dick Dead Eye and Elaine Francis as Hebe. The show also features Denise Brookson, Chantelle Anderson, Rebecca Burgart, Brad Dewar, Ryan “Tiny” Elliott, Judy McLellan, Miriah Reitmeier, Timothy Tucker and Dann Wilhelm.

It’s all about the people.

Live theatre is peopledriven. While some sound and lighting do contribute to the performances, live theatre simply relies on real, live people. FVGSS resident choreographer Carol Seitz declares delight in working with Keath as director, and Keath returns the compliment by calling Seitz’s choreography “magical.”

The set was constructed

by Tim Tucker, who brings the director’s vision to life. Tucker has been often found as musical director for the FVGSS pantos. I like it that Tim the tune man is discovering firsthand how difficult it can be to sing and dance (or just move) at the same time – and breathe.

I’ve worked with Tucker a few times, and look forward to working with him again after his experience with Pinafore. Build the set, go to rehearsals. Sing. Dance.

Bring a character to life.

Ryan “Tiny” Elliott is well known to White Rock audiences as a member of White Rock Players’ Club.

This is his first outing with FVGSS, and how nice to be on his home stage with a new group. Elliott is also quite active behind the scenes for both White Rock

Players and the Vancouver Zone of Theatre BC. Every community theatre group needs people like Tiny (I think he is about 6’4” – or at least he seems that tall).

So here’s a tip of the hat to people like Tim and “Tiny” that do more than just appear on the stage.

This should be an excellent production. Book tickets now, because it is a short run and I have a feeling that this show will be a sell-out. Look at the people involved. It’s a winner.

While community theatre needs good people in place to be successful, the same is true of the professional theatre arena. After 14 years at Arts Club Theatre Company, executive director Howard R. Jang will step down from his position effective June 30. Together with managing artistic director Bill Millerd, Jang is responsible for the Arts Club’s position as one of the most active and vibrant theatre companies in Canada. Jang led the company through four highly successful strategic plans that allowed the company to achieve the largest subscription base of any professional theatre in the country. The Arts Club no longer has a mortgage on the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage and has formed its own foundation.

Of course, Jang is not the only person involved with this success story; I just thought you’d like to know what difference one person can make to the life of a theatre company.

There are more stories to tell, more people making a contribution whether in community or professional theatre. Well done. And thank you all. melminty@telus.net

SURREY — The hunt is on.

A Surrey-based author has hidden a small treasure chest containing $500 in coins.

“Anyone is welcome to search for it,” said L.M. Batstone. “I’ve drawn a map, so people know where to look. And yes, there’s even an ‘X’ on it that marks the spot.”

Batstone hid her small treasure trove hoping to garner interest in her first novel, The Pirate’s Apprentice, and her Kickstarter campaign of the same name, which was designed to help raise funds to edit and publish the first book of the series. She was first inspired to hold a treasure hunt after reading Forest Fenn’s book, The Thrill of the Chase, in which the author hid a treasure chest filled with priceless gold coins and artifacts, and then dared his readers to go find it.

“I instantly fell in love with the idea of hunting for that treasure, but since I’m the mother of a young child, I just can’t,” said Batstone. “So I thought I’d do the second best thing and organize my own treasure hunt. It’s not worth much, but I thought people would enjoy looking for it.”

Being an independent author is difficult, she said.

Spring is in the air and at ballparks all over the city, the overwhelming scent is that of hope as B.C. Premier Baseball League teams embark on a new season.

The 2014 BCPBL campaign kicks off this weekend and local teams in Whalley, South Surrey and North Delta are eager to reap the benefits of the hard work they invested in the winter months.

White Rock Tritons Tritons coach Russ Smithson loves it when a plan comes together.

When Smithson took over the reins of the South Surrey club, he drew up a plan for developing the program over a fiveyear period. This is now year five and so far, everything is falling into place for the Smithson and the Tritons.

“Our boys are really excited this year,” the Tritons head coach said. “We start off every year excited about the new season, but this year our guys really see an opportunity.

They’ve seen the way their teammates worked in the off-season and it wasn’t just 10 or 11 guys putting in the effort, everybody did. They really pushed each other and they’ve come along way from when they started three years ago. They’re ready to win — they’re hungry.”

White Rock lost just four players from last season, only one of which was a starter. That leaves the 2014 edition of the Tritons loaded with veterans, with the remaining holes in the lineup being capably filled by junior guys moving up to the senior team.

The Tritons spent a week this spring training and playing exhibition games in Arizona before returning home where they played an ambitious exhibition schedule. In total, White Rock has played 15 exhibition games and now the players are eager to start

“We’ve been fairly lucky so far,” Smithson said. “We managed to get a lot of games in this spring and now we’re ready to play games that matter. We’re so sick of playing games for nothing right now. We’ve been winning quite a bit so far even though nobody is officially keeping score. It’s still nice to know we’ve been winning some ball games.”

The Tritons pitching staff is led by Scott Doucet, a lefthander who led the team with eight wins last season and pitched well enough to earn a Division 1 NCAA scholarship to Niagara University. He will

be pushed for team ace status by righty Jake Gill, the hardest thrower on the staff.

At the plate, Dylan Yeager returns after hitting .320 as a Grade 11 in 2013, while James Pavelick has showed plenty of power this spring.

“Both of those guys have been crushing the ball this spring,” Smithson said. “I can’t wait — I hope it carries over to the regular season.”

Defensively, Daniel Cassino is looking good at shortstop with Liam Rihela covering second base to give the Tritons solid defence up the middle. Yeager will call the shots behind the plate.

The Tritons open the season with a weekend trip to Kelowna to take on Okanagan.

North Delta Blue Jays Head coach Michael Caleb is presiding over a near-complete rebuild of the Jays nest with only five players returning from 2013.

Despite the youth movement, Caleb is optimistic about his team’s chances.

Heads: you get a worse recycling program.

Tails: you get to pay more for it.

The BC Government is proposing to offload the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations.

The idea is that we’ll get a better, more efficient program that costs taxpayers less.

Unfortunately, what we’ll really end up with is anyone’s guess.

The association isn’t guaranteeing that we’ll get a better program, or even one as good as the current Blue Box program already in place. Since the association is led by big businesses outside of BC, many of whom are not even headquartered in Canada, one could presume that profits will come before environmental stewardship. They usually do. They also won’t guarantee that there won’t be any job cuts here in BC. And how is this supposed to make things better for BC?

Currently, BC homeowners only pay, on average, $35 a year for curbside recycling. Under the proposed regime, you’ll pay more. Every time you bring home a pizza, buy toilet paper, or pretty much anything else that comes in a package, businesses will be passing their increased costs on to you.

How much more? Well, nobody’s saying.

Here’s the only thing anyone does know: we already have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, managed locally and puts the BC environment first. So why is the BC government flipping a coin, bringing in a questionable recycling program that some of our local elected officials are already calling a “scam?”

It’s time to contact Premier Clark and ask her.

South Surrey’s Adam Svensson has not cooled off after a sizzling start to the NCAA Div. II golf season.

The Barry University sophomore won his sixth tournament of the season April 1, helping the host team capture the Buccaneer Invitational for the sixth time in seven years at Miami’s Normandy Shores Golf Club. The Buccaneers, who matched the school record with their fifth tournament title of the season, shot 278 in Tuesday’s final round to win by 22 strokes.

Svensson, shot a course- and schoolrecord 61 in Monday’s second round, won the tournament at 13-under 200. He shot 1-under 70 in the final round. Playing as an individual, Barry sophomore Nico Cavero, a Doral, Fla., native, was the runner-up, shooting 7under 206.

Svensson led the tournament in par-4 scoring at 5-under. The Earl Marriott grad’s personal-best 61 to set the course record put himself in lofty company.

Svensson wins again than Svensson’s 61. The previous course record was 63.

The tournament win was Svensson’s second in a row following a dominant showing at the Bobcat Invitational in Georgia March 17.

Svensson was the only golfer in the 93-player field to break par for the tournament. He finished at 1-under 139 in the 36-hole event on The Golf Club of Cuscowilla. The event was reduced to two rounds due to poor weather conditions.

Svensson, the No. 1-ranked player in NCAA Div. II, won his fifth individual tournament title of the season. His victory established a school career record – all of his wins coming in the 2013-14 season.

“It feels pretty good to break the record,” Svensson said in a press release.

“It was brutal conditions, and I just kind of stuck in there. It’s a special win, knowing that it’s a record-setting win for Barry.”

The Buccaneers, ranked No. 1 in the country, finished second as a team, shooting 284 in Tuesday’s final round for a 594 total.

The Jays spent 10 days in Florida during spring break where they played exhibition games against local college teams. Last weekend they headed to Kamloops for the Best of the West tourney where they won one of four games against teams from B.C. and Alberta.

The Kamloops results were disappointing, but Caleb and the Jays coaches have an extra week to make corrections before North Delta plays their first game on April 17.

“Our strengths this year would be our offence and our starting pitching,” he said.

“We actually have a fairly strong group of pitchers, which I’m excited about, and our hitters are something to get excited about too. We’re working on our defence, but right now that’s one of our weak points.”

Dylan MacAhonic, Ryo Takenaka and Evan Rogers will head up the pitching staff for the Jays this season.

At the plate, Malcolm Boehm has been the Jays top hitter throughout the spring and will start the season hitting leadoff.

Boehm’s bat will be bolstered by the middle of the lineup with Brock Morgan, Rogers and Kevin Sengara.

Catchers Morgan and Michael Smith will anchor the defence from behind the plate.

Outfielders Dryden Rossiter and Curtis Hildenbrandt have looked sharp this spring, giving the Jays solid work in the outfield.

Another bright spot for North Delta is Tyler Hoefer. The Grade 10 student can do it all, helping the Jays on the mound, at the plate and at shortstop.

Whalley Chiefs Another team undergoing an overhaul this spring is the Whalley Chiefs where former stars Drew Parker, Cole Armstrong and Ryan Pilgrim have come home to coach after concluding their college and pro careers.

The new coaches embarked on a vigorous off-season training program and when play begins this weekend, they will finally get to see if all the hard work has paid off.

“We’ve done a lot of work in the batting cage over the winter and now that the weather is better, it’s great to be outside again,” Parker said. “The guys have worked really hard in the off-season and it’s great to get them outside where they can show their improvement. It’s early obviously, but the goal is to constantly improve as the season goes on. The guys have come a long way this spring and now we want to keep improving.”

The Chiefs spent spring break in Phoenix training and playing exhibition games before returning to B.C. to close out the preseason. They earned a split of a Sunday doubleheader against the Tritons at South Surrey Athletic Park and now are focused on the regular season.

“I think we’re going to be good,” Parker said. “We have really good pitching and our hitting is coming along pretty well. Defence is the key for us. If we play defensive baseball and do the little things well, then we’ll have a successful team.”

Pitchers Jordan Dray, Max Williams and Cole Hunt will handle most of the pitching duties while Grade 11 lefty Nick Vellios will have a chance to make his mark.

While waiting politely for a pedestrian to clear the intersection while turning right, this car received a wide grin and a giant wave from a woman wearing industrial welding goggles. She looked a bit like a bee. So does this.

It’s the Beetle GSR, a special edition version of Volkswagen’s Turbo Beetle that’s a real honey of a car. Take that comment literally; this machine really does look like it was hatched in a hive.

If yellow stitching on a flat-bottomed steering wheel can really be considered tasteful, then the inside of the GSR is more tasteful than the exterior. It’s actually quite reserved in here, and you might never know it was a limited-run model – except that VW has helpfully written that fact on the steering wheel.

Just 3500 GSRs will be sold worldwide. With the original car, all were gone in just two months. In Canada, fewer than 100 will be imported, so perhaps the rarity value is worth something.

The name comes from a tribute to the 1973 Gelb-Schwartz Renner (Yellow-Black Racer), a similarly bumblebeeshaded machine that is so famous, you never heard about until just now when I mentioned it. Sold only in the German home market, it had 50hp from an aircooled 1600cc and slightly larger wheels and tires – no Muhammad Ali here.

As far as the rest of the interior goes, this is essentially just an R-Line Beetle with a few extra badges. You get comfortable, great-looking seats that don’t provide quite enough lateral support as compared to a GTI, a very VWlooking dash layout, and a multi-gauge pod. Where the regular Turbo Beetle gets a neat carbon-fibre trim, this car gets matte-finish treatment to most of the surfaces, and the aforementioned yellow stitching everywhere.

Still, for the time the car was fairly nippy, and marked a change for the humble people’s car from modest little fuelsipper to unlikely performance hero. This new version has 210 turbocharged horses to draw on: is it all buzz, or is there a sting in the new GSR’s tail?

This particular version was equipped with the Beetle’s Technology package, which adds satellite navigation and an 8-speaker-plus-subwoofer Fender-branded premium audio. This works great for cleaning out your ears because it can and will melt your earwax.

Design:

While the Beetle’s shape does limit headroom and would send most young parents tut-tutting and heading for a fivedoor GTI or a GLI instead, it’s actually not all that bad for short distances. A child seat does (barely) fit, and an adult passenger could endure a short lift across town.

The previous generation of front-wheel-drive Beetle was very popular, but might have been accused of being a bit cutesy in its homage to the sturdy, no-nonsense original.

I mean a flower vase next to the steering wheel? That’s a bit much.

However, when VW decided to drop the turbocharged four-cylinder engine out of the GTI into the car, those cute looks were suddenly hilarious. Here was a car from the Care Bear / My Little Pony school that was perfectly capable of dusting off the hot hatchbacks of the day.

The new car is much less saccharine-sweet, with an extended profile that gives it something of the look of a Porsche. All GSRs get the cosmetic upgrades of the R-Line cars, which means aerodynamic trim including a large spoiler, and 19” alloys shod in wide, 235-series rubber.

There’s also LED strip lighting up front, and in case you missed the point, an all-over yellow-and-black graphics package that includes “GSR” proudly emblazoned on the flanks.

Essentially, owning this car requires something of a sense of humour, both inside and out. And, speaking of giggles, let’s talk about what’s under the hood.

Performance:

Ten more horsepower - that’s all I’m asking VW, just ten more horsies to give this blazing-yellow Bug some genuine performance credentials over and above the regular Turbo Beetle. No dice.

Still, the original GSR didn’t have any more punch-buggy than the 1600 Beetle it was based on, so perhaps tradition is being upheld. Besides which, this isn’t really a car about winning races – this is a car designed around the concept of having a bit of a laugh.

Two transmissions are on offer, a six-speed manual that’s a bit more engaging, or a $1400 six-speed dual-clutch

gearbox that adds stop and go practicality without losing much of the fun. The 210hp, 2.0L four-cylinder turbo is the same venerable mill that’s found throughout the VW line-up. It’s responsive and grunty, and makes a really good noise.

So, if you’ve got a racing helmet with a VW sticker on it, then maybe you’re best off sticking with the GTI, particularly the new one coming later this year which is simply excellent. But what if you just want to have a bit of fun?

Here, the GSR becomes an out-and-out hoot. If someone in a more-powerful Focus ST wants to stoplight race you, then just roll your eyes and let them go – the GSR isn’t built for would-be Vin Diesels.

Instead, it’s easy to drive, with much better sightlines than the old car, excellent grip on long sweeping corners, and a comfortable, upright driving position. It’s not a serious car, but the world is full of serious cars stuck in traffic. At least with this bright yellow package, you’ll gather a smiling wave or two, rather than a scowl.

Features:

As mentioned, the GSR is a trim beyond a fully-loaded top-of-the-line R-Line Turbo Beetle, so you get 19” alloys, full leather interior, Bluetooth handsfree, heated seats, biXenon headlamps, etc., etc.

Aside from choosing which transmission you want for your waggle-dance, the only option on the GSR package is the Technology bundle. This includes satellite navigation and the powerful Fender stereo for $1090 – not bad.

Fuel economy for VW’s four-pot turbo isn’t bad either, with official ratings of 9.0L/100kms city and 6.5L/100kms on the highway. Like any other turbocharged vehicle, you’ll struggle to hit those figures if you drive the car as it’s meant to be driven, but VW is often closer than most.

Green Light:

Nice interior; sense of fun; responsive engine and transmission; unique appeal

Stop Sign:

No better dynamically than regular Turbo Beetle; stiff ride; slightly compromised handling

LANGLEY — Kids are going to be a lot safer in cars, thanks to an initiative that ensures car seats are properly installed in vehicles.

On Sunday, members of the Chevrolet Safe & Sure program and injury prevention group Parachute Canada stopped by Preston GM – just across the Surrey border into Langley – to demonstrate how to securely install rear-facing, forward-facing and booster car seats into all types of vehicles, including sedans, vans, SUVs and trucks. They also provided free advice to parents on when to upgrade their car seats until their child is ready for their vehicles’ seatbelts.

“It’s a real safety issue,” said Dana Remedios, a representative for the Safe & Sure program. “The leading killer of people under the age of 25 in North America is car accidents.”

Remedios noted that about 80 per cent of car seats are not installed properly, though it’s not simply because of the manner in which the seat is installed.

“Sometimes people are using the wrong size or seat style for either their child or for their car,” she said.

Over the course of the day, a team of experts showed dozens of parents how to buckled in their children correctly. Parents had the chance to watch instructors install the seats, then were given handson guidance on how to do it themselves.

Remedios noted that many parents have done their research on car seats, but said that not all sources are accurate or have the most up-todate methods for securing children. By having demonstrations such as the Safe & Sure program, parents are educated on what the latest tried-andtrue practices are with car seats.

“It’s free expert advice on installing car seats in any make or model of vehicle,” said Remedios.

“Although it’s a Chevrolet initiative, for Chevrolet, it was really important that it doesn’t matter what you drive - we want to help keep kids safe.”
