Szendrei murder

Try killer as adult, court hears Psychiatrists say Szendrei’s murderer not suited for youth correctional system Tom Zytaruk Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk

The young man who murdered North Delta teen Laura Szendrei should be dealt with in the adult penal system, two

psychiatrists have testified. Dr. Paul Janke, a psychiatrist with the Youth Forensic Psychiatric Service for B.C., testified Wednesday that the young man requires “indefinite” supervision that’s “well beyond” what’s available in the

youth system. Janke said that “on a very conservative basis,” the killer, now 20, should be closely supervised well into his late 40s or early 50s. see KILLER’S › page 3

Andrei Gornenski, Foresters Brokerage manager B.C., and KaBOOM!’s Katrina Hill were on hand Saturday to guide 150 volunteers as they built a new playground in just six hours on Saturday in Whalley. The park was inspired by sketches from local children, who were asked to draw their ideal playground. Read the full story on page 7. (Photo: LUIZ LOPES)

In the wake of the train death involving a White Rock jogger Sunday, Mayor Wayne Baldwin is urging citizens to practise their due diligence when it comes to crossing the tracks. “Trains are quiet, surprisingly enough, and do tend to sneak up on you,” he said Monday during a council meeting. “They are more frequent than they used to be, we just need to take care when crossing the tracks.” The warning follows the Sunday death of 42-year-old Anita Lewis, who was hit by an Amtrak passenger train while trying to cross the tracks in the 15600-block of Marine Drive. Lewis, a White Rock mortgage broker, had been out jogging with her husband along the waterfront when the tragedy occurred. White Rock RCMP are investigating the incident and say Lewis had headphones on her at the time, but whether or not she had them on – or if they played a factor in her death – remains unclear at this point. “We can say she was in possession of them but whether or not she was wearing them, I don’t know if we’ll ever come to a definitive conclusion on that,” said Const. Janelle Shoihet. “Based on witness accounts some are saying she did have them in, others say she didn’t, so we’re still looking.”
