New city hall build behind schedule Jacob Zinn Now contributor Twitter @jacobzinn

Construction of Surrey’s new city hall is running behind schedule and the new facility likely won’t meet its grand opening next month. While Coun. Barbara Steele hasn’t heard the specifics of the construction delays, she said Surrey city council won’t move into its chambers at the facility on 104th Avenue until December. “The last thing I heard was toward the end of July,” she said. “My understanding is that our first council meeting in the new city hall will be Dec. 9.” But Nicola Webb, general manager of human resources for the city, said the new $97-million building has always been scheduled for completion in fall 2013 — a much broader window. “We’re reasonably on track and we’ve always said the fall of 2013, and we’ll hit that,” she said. Various pages of the City of Surrey’s website list September as the target for the city hall’s completion, and one page lists Sept. 7 as the grand opening date. As the building is still under construction, no departments have moved yet. Webb said the city hasn’t yet determined the order in which departments will transfer to the new city hall. “We want to make sure that we don’t have any impact on service to our residents, so we’re just working out those details and we’ll take them back to council for approval,” she said. Steele noted that council’s move is one of the final tasks as there are many components that need to be in working order before public hearings can be held at the new hall. “To be set up for the council meetings, that would be the last thing,” she said. “There’s all the electronics and the computers and all that kind of stuff that has to go in as well to make us all functional.” Webb noted that the construction delays will not impact the $97-million budget for the hall. jacobzinn@gmail.com
