Surrey Six trial moved to Vancouver The trial of three of the men charged in the Surrey Six murders has been moved to Vancouver. Cody Haevischer, Matthew Johnston and Michael Le were to have gone on trial in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster but a change of venue was deemed necessary, according to a recent announcement from Associate Chief Justice Austin Cullen on the court’s website. “Although a number of pre-trial matters have been heard in New Westminister, the efficiency of the trial and the ability of the court to control its processes, all of which will serve the public interest, require that the location of the trial be moved to Vancouver,” says the announcement. The trial date is set for Sept. 16 at the moment but that may change as a pretrial conference in the case is expected to be heard Tuesday. In October or 2007, six men were shot to death in a suite at Balmoral Tower apartment building. Two innocent bystanders were killed in the gang-related attack.

She will complete her senior year of high school on a 1927 Norwegian ship while stopping at 20 ports on four continents. Read the full story on page 10. (Photo: LUIZ LOPES)

Surrey students are being taught skills to deal with verbal, physical and sexual violence – and at an earlier age. The violence prevention program SafeTeen, which has been around for 37 years, is currently in all Surrey high schools and about one-quarter of the district’s elementary schools. The program’s founder, Anita Roberts, said the program’s focus right now is to move into the pre-adolescent age – grades six and seven. “There’s so much going on for those 11- and 12-year-olds. They’re too young to even handle what’s happening. The grade seven boys are showing the grade six and seven girls porn on their phones. It’s transforming our kids. We’ve got the girls in grade eight and nine and saying things like, ‘My boyfriend wants me to have group sex.’ Really disturbing things.” Roberts hopes it will be in all of Surrey’s elementary schools sometime next year. The SafeTeen program focuses on body language and students are taught three ways of responding to situations: fear, anger or assertiveness. see PARENTS › page 7
