shakers celebrated a new 52-storey world-class Marriott hotel to be built in City Centre, Lillian Bailey, 88, marked her fourth Tuesday without electricity in what’s left of the decrepit Beladean Motel and Trailer Park in Newton. She’s been using flashlights to light her trailer at night. “It gets dark with no light.” Surrey’s first mixed-use hotel and residential project, the Civic Hotel at 3 Civic Plaza, will be the tallest building this side of the Fraser, at 52 floors. “I wanted 56,” Surrey Mayor Dianne

Watts joked during a press conference at the Surrey SFU campus on Tuesday afternoon, when the project was unveiled. “It really is a great day today for us to welcome such a premier hotel in the Surrey City Centre,” she said. “We have a high demand for conference space, for sure.” Watts noted that Surrey’s population now stands at about 502,000. “We really want to make sure our downtown core is very, very vibrant,” she said. see HOTEL CELEBRATED › page 3
