SURREY — Brian Fleetwood jumped down into the SkyTrain track early Saturday evening at Scott Road Station to save a fellow who’d fallen in off the platform and cracked his head. The former Surrey resident, who now lives on Gabriola Island, was in town visiting family for Thanksgiving. He was heading to Vancouver to take in a hockey game with his brother-in-law Jason when a stranger in his early 40s named Wayne suddenly fell into harm’s way. “I really have no idea what caused him to fall,” Fleetwood said. About 100 people were on the platform when he spotted the injured man and leapt down onto the track to help him. “I think adrenalin kicked in,” said Fleetwood, who works as a roofer and has undergone first aid training. “Training kicked into action, just like it should.” After a few minutes two more men joined Fleetwood in the pit. Together they lifted Wayne, who’d suffered a seizure, out from the SkyTrain’s path. Paramedics took the injured man to hospital while Fleetwood, 38, continued on to see the Canucks game. He figures someone must’ve pushed an emergency button as no trains came while he was down on the track. “It’s something maybe I should have done first,” Fleetwood said in retrospect. Kathryn Chouinard is Fleetwood’s proud sister. “He is a true hero,” she said. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com
