Old public market may be torn down within 30 days New owners want to build two-phase project that would include condos and commercial space EMAIL US YOUR THOUGHTS WITH Amy Reid Now staff Twitter @amyreid87

NEWTON — It looks like the old Surrey Public Market building, which has been vacant for more than a decade, may finally be coming down. Newmark Properties, the new owners of the site at King George Boulevard and 64th Avenue, estimated the 40,000-square-foot building would be torn down within 30 days. The company also confirmed it has submitted a development permit application to construct two buildings. Phase one of the development, if approved by Surrey council, will feature a five-storey building with approximately 37,000 square feet of commercial space on

the main floor, and 108 condo units over four floors. It’s hoped to be completed within two years. “We are currently in discussions with a major grocery chain, bank, liquor store and restaurant chain to accommodate the commercial space,” said Mat Munro, sales and marketing director for Newmark Properties. Phase two will consist of a four-storey building with 115 to 130 condos. The original Surrey Public Market was opened in the mid-’80s and a new public market building – the one that is vacant on the site today – was opened in the mid-’90s. After the market died a slow death as tenants left one by one, the property became overgrown with vegetation and the building has served as a sort of hobo jungle as homeless people seek shelter there. The place has also attracted plenty of attention from the city’s graffiti artists. In 2011, a numbered company acquired the property for $7.3 million. In 2012, the old building was up for lease and the owners said they might look at a mixed development on the northern part of the property. While there was talk of renting out the building as an ice-skating rink or a fitness facility, no tenants materialized. Later in 2012, the owners removed a bridge on the property, which was suspended over the Archibald Creek. see PUBLIC MARKET › page 7

Surrey city council and a delegation from Xi’an, China unveiled a display of two replica statues of Terracotta warriors on Saturday at City Centre Library. Mayor Dianne Watts, councillors Judy Villeneuve and Barbara Steele, and fellow councillor and Surrey-Panorama MLA Marvin Hunt were on hand for the unveiling, along with Cheng Qunli, chairman of the Xi’an People’s Political Consultative Conference. The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. The sculptures are a form of funerary art that were buried with the emperor in 210–209 BC. Their purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife. (Photo: GORD GOBLE)
