We must act fast on tracks, mayors say Cities of Surrey and White Rock make case for railway relocation Christopher Poon Now staff Twitter @questionchris
SOUTH SURREY — “From rails to trails.” It’s a simple and catchy slogan behind a new push from the cities of Surrey and White Rock to look at the potential relocation of the railway tracks from their
shared waterfront. The campaign officially kicked off Tuesday night during a community open house held by both municipalities seeking feedback from residents on what they’d like to see done in the face of increasingly hazardous materials being transported through their communities. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts led the charge by explaining to the 300 or so in attendance that the rail line currently in use was built more than 100 years ago. “We have seen between 2004 and 2013, about a 1,000 per cent increase in rail traffic,” she said.

Now, with the population growing so rapidly in the area, as well as concerns raised about emergency access to Crescent Beach and the transportation of hazardous goods
such as chlorine, hydrochloric acid and propane through the areas, Watts said it’s time to look at future long-term plans for rail traffic relocation. What that might look like is in the very early stages, but Watts said there were four possible lines that could reduce the need for a waterfront rail line, including one route that could run along Highway 99 parallel to King George Boulevard, or three others that run through east Surrey, near the Langley border. The projects could require 11 to 14 kilometres of new track, depending on the location selected. see RAIL › page 7

The dance floor was packed as Viva Surrey! brought spicy Latin flavour to the city in a fundraiser for Surrey Christmas Bureau on Saturday at St. Bernadette’s hall in Surrey. The event, which featured Latin music, dance and food, raised money to help local low-income families. For more photos, see page 45 or scan this page with Layar. (Photo: GORD GOBLE)
