Smuggling for gangsters gets prison guard four years Tom Zytaruk Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk

“By virtue of their geography, New West is a transportation corridor. So we have planned, and have the support of the region, and have had the support of TransLink, to build the six-lane bridge,” Rasode said. Surrey Coun. Tom Gill, chair of the city’s transportation and infrastructure committee, said New Westminster has asked for the plans to be reviewed numerous times.

SURREY — Former Surrey prison guard Sedrick Dang tried not to cry as he turned to face the people whom he’d betrayed. “I just want to apologize for my actions,” he told Judge Kenneth Skilnick, family members and the corrections officers in the courtroom. Dang, 26, was sentenced to four years in prison Monday, in Surrey provincial court, after the former Surrey Pre-Trial Centre guard pleaded guilty to accepting a bribe and breach of trust. “I will use that time wisely,” Dang told the court. “I do want to be a better person.” The court heard Dang was paid $30,000 for sneaking contraband into the pretrial centre for United Nations gang members who were incarcerated there, between March 2011 and Nov. 2012. He made 14 deliveries, all told, and among the items he smuggled in were a screwdriver, steroids and a cellphone. “Greed was a significant motivating factor,” Skilnick said. “This is a serious breach, and a serious offence.” The court heard Dang had been struggling under $20,000 in credit card debt. Crown prosecutor Alisia Adams and defence lawyer Raj Basra presented a joint sentencing submission to the judge, asking for the four-year sentence. Dang was arrested on Nov. 14, 2012, after smuggling a Blackberry into the jail. Undercover police had given him the phone.

Give your head a shake, Gill tells New Westminster Pattullo Bridge talks at ‘standstill’ as New West fights six-lane bridge option Amy Reid Now staff Twitter @amyreid87

SURREY — Metro Vancouver and Surrey council have endorsed a new sixlane Pattullo Bridge, but it seems New Westminster isn’t on board with the plan. Surrey Coun. Barinder Rasode said New Westminster and Surrey staff have been working with TransLink through the consultation process. “That consultation process has come to a halt,” said Rasode. “We’ve come

from 24 options to six options to now two options, and New West is now not engaging for the second phase of the consultation because the option to refurbish the bridge is no longer one of the options TransLink is exploring.” Estimates put the cost of a new fourlane bridge at $800 million and the cost of a six-lane bridge at more than $1 billion. Rasode said it is not a Surrey versus New Westminster issue, but rather a regional transportation issue.
