Watts takes over police committee

Toque Tuesday brings Surrey together again

Rasode ‘surprised’ by mayor’s decision Amy Reid

Now staff Twitter @amyreid87

Hockey players – and some who might call themselves such – braved the chilly weather during Surrey’s third annual Toque Tuesday to raise awareness about the plight of homeless people, and their need for donated clothing. The games, held behind Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre in Whalley, were organized by

retired Surrey firefighter Tim Baillie, aka Hockey Day Supreme Commander. Six ice battles were fought, with the City of Surrey, Keys 1, Surrey Eagles, Surrey firefighters, Chicks With Sticks, Trilogy, Kwantlen, the RCMP, Snipers, MLAs and others knocking pucks around. (Photo: KEVIN HILL)

Police arrest man after Surrey bus driver beaten SURREY — Police say they have caught a suspect who allegedly assaulted a bus driver in Surrey Monday night. At press time Wednesday, Anne Drennan, spokesperson for transit police, said an arrest had been made and more

information would be released later in the day. Visit thenownewspaper.com for the latest on this story. Monday night at approximately 11 p.m., police say a man boarded a bus at 168th Street and Fraser Highway.

“He was wearing a headset and once on the bus he was singing and rapping and swearing profusely at a very loud rate,” Drennan said. see SUSPECT › page 3

SURREY — Mayor Dianne Watts is taking over as interim chair of the police committee. The announcement, made at Monday night’s council meeting, caught former police committee chair Coun. Barinder Rasode off guard. “I’m quite surprised,” Rasode said after the meeting. Watts said she will be acting as chair on an interim basis, while both the police and community safety committees go through restructuring. “I was going to be bringing some changes forward to the police committee, as chair, around transparency and openness and receiving delegations from the public and live-streaming the meetings,” Rasode said. “So I was quite surprised by the announcement tonight that I would no longer be chairing the committee. So, I was actually not in a position to make the changes I had been hoping to.” Rasode said she doesn’t know why the mayor made the change. Watts insists the move was not personal, but rather simply about reorganizing the two committees. “The public safety portfolio still sits with Rasode. She’s still chair of the community safety committee. We’ve just done some reorganizing,” Watts said. see WATTS WANTS › page 3

Watts wants to ‘realign’ police committee to public safety, community engagement, transparency and openness with or without titles. “We don’t get boxed in by what title we hold because we should still be doing the work and asking the tough questions.”

EMAIL YOUR LETTERS WITH ‹ from page 1

“In terms of the police committee, in the interim, while we do the reorganization, I’m stepping in as chair…. I want to make sure that the flow of information is structured in a way that it comes through to council in an open format and to the community as well,” Watts said. “So there’s some administrative stuff, and I want to be clear here, because this is no reflection on Coun. Rasode’s ability. I think she’s done a great job…. I’m stepping in as interim, just to realign stuff.” The changes come after questions about why the police committee meeting minutes for the past two years are not available on the City of Surrey’s website. The city’s website shows minutes from 2002 to 2011, but they stop in 2012. “I think that in terms of the police committee, we need to have those meetings consistent and regularly scheduled,” Watts said, adding that the police committee met five times in 2012 and four times in 2013. “We need monthly meetings in an open forum making sure that the community and council have that flow of information, and as standing items on the agenda, I think we need

to... have items on the community safety committee update, mayor’s task force update, integrated team update,” Watts said. When asked when Rasode would be put back on as chair, Watts said, “We’ll discuss that at the police committee meeting, just seeing what that framework looks like.” At Monday night’s meeting, Watts formalized the community safety committee and added councillors Barbara Steele, Linda Hepner and Bruce Hayne to support the work being done. The community safety committee was originally set up as an informal working group to review recommendations of the Crime Reduction Strategy. Minutes from that committee will now go through the police committee. When it comes to why there weren’t many police committee meetings over the past two years, Rasode said, “I know the mayor’s schedule is very challenging, because she is very busy, but that is one of the reasons we didn’t have as many meetings as we should have.” Rasode said she is committed

Rasode and Watts both maintain there is not a rift between them, but Rasode did say she and the mayor have “a difference in opinion on community public safety.” The two Surrey First politicians have made headlines recently. After Julie Paskall’s murder outside Newton Arena, Rasode broke party lines and went public with comments that Surrey did not do enough in the neighbourhood. Less than a week later, Watts said it was an accident that she liked four posts on Facebook that slammed Rasode, including one that called her a “coward.” Then, when questions were raised about why police committee meetings weren’t publicly available for the past two years, Watts referred comments back to Rasode, as she was chair at the time, until Watts took over as interim chair of the committee last Monday. In January 2013, media reports made note of a rift at city hall following the divide among Surrey council following the rejected South Surrey casino proposal, but Rasode and Watts both said that was not the case.

Suspect in bus driver beating nabbed, union unsure if reward will be paid ‹ from page 1

The bus driver used the PA and asked the man to stop swearing, but he didn’t stop. When the bus arrived at the Surrey Central bus loop, police say the man

punched the bus driver, grabbed his glasses and ran toward the SkyTrain station. The bus driver chased the man. The suspect assaulted the driver again at the entrance to the SkyTrain station, and after the driver returned to the bus, the man

returned and assaulted him a third time. The bus driver suffered cuts and bruises to his head and face, but was not hospitalized. The union representing Lower Mainland bus drivers put out a $15,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the

man behind the beating. Nathan Woods, president of Unifor Local 111, said he was aware a suspect was in custody, but did not know if anyone would receive the $15,000 reward.

NEW WESTMINSTER — Spencer O’Soup says he feels no ill will toward the woman accused of murdering his little brother. Beatrice Thomas, 38, is being tried for second-degree murder in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, accused of stabbing her common-law husband Quannah O’Soup, 37, to death in North Delta on July 3, 2011. “I’m not here to have pitchforks and fire,” Spencer O’Soup told the Now outside court Tuesday. “For me, it’s about healing. “I don’t feel hatred or anything like that,” he said. “I feel a lot of compassion. I feel really sorry for her.” O’Soup has not been called as a witness but plans to watch the trial, set for three weeks, in the hope he’ll achieve some level of closure over his brother’s death. “I was devastated when I heard,” he recalled. “It’s the worst news ever.” He said his brother and Thomas met in Edmonton and had been together for about a year. She followed him to the coast, he said. “She made her way here with her kids.” They rented a tiny half-duplex at 11540 80th Ave. in North Delta, across the street from the entrance to McCloskey elementary school. “Their relationship was toxic,” Spencer said. “It was desperation. SURREY — The co-owner of a Surrey bowling lane has been charged with seven sex-related offences. Thomas Charles Cooper, 43, the co-owner of the Dell Lanes and Sports Lounge, faces charges that include sexual exploitation, exposing genitals, sexual assault and sexual interference of a person under 16. None of the charges against Cooper have been proven in court. Cooper is back in court in March and then again on April 14 and 15 for trial. Bert Paquet said she might have been trying to pick something up from the roadway. “For some reason she put herself in front of the bus,” he said. “We believe, based on the information we received,

that the driver didn’t do anything wrong.” The woman, whose name hasn’t been released, sustained head injuries, a broken arm and a broken hand. The collision happened at 1 p.m., on 140th Street near 78A Avenue. Surrey RCMP collision analysts are continuing their investigation. Later Monday, two men were struck

by a minivan while they were crossing in a crosswalk on Fraser Highway at 159th Street, at about 6 p.m. A 79-year-old man was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital with a broken leg while the 32-year-old man’s injuries were negligible. The woman driving the minivan was ticketed for failing to yield to pedestrians.

SURREY — Twenty-three years and two months after he was first sworn in as a Surrey city councillor, Marvin Hunt handed in his resignation Monday night. The veteran politician won his bid as MLA for Surrey-Panorama in the last provincial election. Hunt ultimately deciding not to accept his council pay, but planned to stay on as long as he could. Hunt said Monday he’d received his scheduled for the new session of the B.C. legislature and would be unable to attend any city meetings from then until June. “So therefore, madam mayor, I submit my resignation as a councillor to you,” Hunt said, choking back tears. “It has been an absolutely awesome privilege to serve this wonderful city. And I wish you and all the rest of my council all the best for this term and great success in November’s election. Sorry for my emotions, but 23 years and two month later, I’m surprised to be here.”

information about individual committees can be found at www.surrey.ca/committees. You are 18-25 years of age, a resident of surrey, with an interest in bringing your perspective, experience and creative thinking to ensure that decisions are truly representative of our community. interested applicants are asked to submit a written expression of interest to clerks@surrey.ca by 4:00 pm, February 14, 2014.

Mayor Dianne Watts chuckled as she said she wouldn’t accept Hunt’s resignation. “I think that whenever you can possibly attend that we would like for that to occur. Like Marvin Hunt I said, I understand your responsibility, but as mayor and chair, that’s my position.” All councillors echoed Watts’ comments. “It would be an amazing loss to this council not to have your strength as we head into this year ahead,” Coun. Linda Hepner said. “I certainly support you being here whenever the legislature allows you to. And heaven knows, it’s going to be a hard seat to fill come November.” Hunt said it was a sad day to hand in his resignation, but it had to be done. “I will not be able to fulfill the conditions of local government, so therefore, I resign.”

New elementary school spells relief in Newton Christopher Poon

Now staff Twitter @questionchris

NEWTON — Surrey’s newest elementary school opened its doors to students for the first time Monday, bringing much-needed relief to nearby Cambridge Elementary. With 16 portables on sight, Cambridge Elementary had been in dire need of some sort of overcrowding relief for quite some time and, following a ground breaking ceremony two years ago, Goldstone Elementary is the answer to that call. As such, more than 300 students were present on opening day, eagerly awaiting a chance to get into their new classrooms and out of the portables from Cambridge. The new school has capacity for 555 students and has brought a breath of fresh air to the growing community surrounding it. “I am really excited about having a brand new school,” said parent Les Saunders, who has children in grades 1 and 4. “The school we were at before, Cambridge, was really full, there were just too many kids there so I’m really excited to have a new school that

my kids can go to.” According to Saunders, while the teaching was still very good at Cambridge, the sheer overcrowding made it difficult for students to get everything they might need. “My son was in a portable in Grade 4, we really enjoyed it but it’s just going to be nicer to be in a classroom,” he said. “Gym time was limited due to the number of kids there, so we’re happy to get into a school where they can have proper gym time as well as library time.” School board chair Shawn Wilson said the school was very much welcomed in the growing school district. “With the kind of pressure the district has been under, is under and will likely continue to be under in terms of space, any new schools like this is just such a big relief for us,” he said. “There are a lot of communities that aren’t particularly happy to have their kids housed in portables all the time.” Wilson said that there are also expansions in the works for other schools, but it still remains that Surrey is growing faster than the students can be housed.

New provincial liquor laws

We want it all, and now ViewFrom TheCheap Seats Michael Booth

G

ive us convenience or give us death. The San Francisco think tank/punk band Dead Kennedys coined the phrase in the 1980s and its spirit has only multiplied in the ensuing decades. We are a society that not only wants it all, we want it yesterday. Nothing is too fast for us – we demand it. Faster internet speed to download pictures of cats; quicker pizza deliveries to clog our arteries more rapidly than the past; up-tothe-second news coverage on self-absorbed celebrities of questionable talent; not just regular transit – rapid transit; microwave ovens to cook chemical-laden frozen “food” in seconds instead of having to wait for the regular oven to heat up; hundreds of television channels including east coast stations so we can watch programs three hours earlier than stations on the west coast; electronics companies releasing newer and flashier versions of their products mere weeks after the devices debuted. This obsession for all things bigger, better and faster with shinier bells and louder whistles has become a driving force in

our society and economy. Lord help the companies that can’t keep pace with the relentless demands of consumers. Often the losers in such matters have a superb product – betamax video tapes, HD-DVD – but once the herd has adopted a path, there are rarely any off-ramps. Our society’s drive for an instant hit of satisfaction has not been lost on governments. Most elected governments save all of its bad news moves for the first two years of their term in office, followed by two years of shovelling money off the back of a truck in the form of voter friendly announcements and mega projects. The strategy bets that voters will be so dazzled by the government’s recent largesse, they will forget the misery that befell them just two years previous. And it’s a good bet to make, as election results prove. And speaking of betting, the governments have that figured out too. In the 1970s, the federal government introduced a lottery to help fund the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. It was so successful that smaller lotteries followed. The Western Express offered a prize of a quarter million dollars every two weeks and people snapped up the tickets as fast as the government could print them. That was followed by a

weekly 6/49 scheme with a weekly $1 million prize, which was in turn followed by lotto insanity. Like laboratory rats incessantly nudging the feeder bar, people plunked down their hard-earned cash for scratch and win tickets, thrice weekly lotto draws, pull-tabs in pubs and Keno games with winners every hour. Not satisfied with that stream of revenue, the government turned the cash flow into a river by legalizing a multitude of casinos across the province. Now anybody can itch their gambling jones whenever the mood strikes them. The people demanded it and the government responded to the point now where gambling revenues are a key part of revenue. With an ever-expanding eye for more vice-related revenue, Christy Clark’s Liberals made another move

last week with sweeping changes to the provincial liquor laws. Granted, many of the changes were long overdue. Allowing only beer sales in certain areas at sporting events and roping off sections of a facility for a beer garden were rules that created a monstrous pain in the posterior for consumers and vendors alike. Same with limited hours when liquor can be delivered to hotel guests through room service. But the end to that red tape wasn’t the rules the general public was so happy to hear were coming down the track. In almost every news story concerning the forthcoming changes, the biggest attraction was a promise to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in grocery stores and convenience markets. Does anyone over the age of 19 currently have a

problem acquiring liquor between the hours of 10 a.m. and midnight? In the past, it may have been an issue. I’m old enough to remember – pre-Expo 86 – when bars were not allowed to be open on Sundays, with off-sales and bootleg beer being your only option once the government liquor stores closed at 6 p.m. Not anymore. In addition to the network of government stores, the province is now riddled with private beer and wine — and more! — stores that dispense every kind of spirit one could wish for until midnight daily. If that kind of accessibility to alcohol is too limiting for you, I respectfully suggest you get professional help. But now that’s no longer good enough for us. Polls show we want to do onestop shopping and purchase

booze along with our frozen microwavable meals, fatsaturated snacks, disposable diapers, processed cheese products and organic veggies (because we want to eat healthy, wink wink). Do we need it? No. Do we want it because other provinces and states have it? You betcha, and that’s all that matters. How much longer before drive-through liquor stores are legalized? They have those in Australia so it’s probably just a matter of time before they turn up here. Alcohol and driving — what could possibly go wrong? If we have something, we want more of it faster and if we don’t have a product or service, then we have to have it and the sooner the better. Never mind the social costs that come with such moves. That’s just the price of convenience, right?

VIEWPOINT Letters

Band trips are invaluable The Editor, Re: “Consult parents on costly trips,” the Now, Jan. 30. I am writing in response to Harvinder Sandhu’s column about school band trips and the costs of doing so. Firstly, I would like to say that I am a parent of a child involved in a very busy music program. I have seen the amazing experiences that he has had from working hard with his fellow bandmates, the value of money learned as he worked to fundraise and the lifelong positive memories of going on the tours themselves. It seems rather hard to believe that there was little information disclosed to parents about this tour as there are protocols of information that all teachers must follow when tours of this magnitude are offered. Usually, something this big is planned for at least a year in advance. Once a potential tour is selected, the information then goes out to the families to see if in fact it is a viable option. No band teacher ever wants to see any student left behind, so this family feedback is very important and a big part of the process. Yes the students do get excited, but the tour is not definite yet. Should it turn out the trip is not feasible, there is a level of disappointment, but this is just another opportunity to prepare our children for real world situations. Though I cannot speak to what fundraising is available at your school, my son started fundraising in Grade 8, knowing that the program he is involved in does a lot of travelling in grades 10 to 12. Most music programs are designed this way, so I would imagine, unless your son just stepped into band, he has been aware of these large tours for some time now. I am not denying that it is challenging to afford these trips even when fundraising is done, and you seem to already understand the benefits that can enhance their perspective and last a lifetime. I also cannot comment on your destination concern but I can tell you that our senior tour last year was considered “exotic” as well, but the final itinerary showed the time spent fully booked in a learning environment and the reflection showed in all the students upon their return. I thought my son would not care about the museums and monuments too, but a visit to a major landmark memorial of a world changing event had a massive impact on him for the better that I did not expect. I am so thankful for my son’s experiences in band and hope you will trust in your son’s band teacher as I do in mine. Teachers want the best for our kids and all they need is the benefit of the doubt. Stacey Marton, Surrey

TransLink’s greed causes grief The Editor, It seems to me that TransLink is simply being greedy. They had an overflowing park and ride and our tax dollars paid for expanding it, giving TransLink a potential revenue increase of more than 75 per cent ridership. Instead of embracing this additional revenue and applying it to the operational costs of the lot, they proactively put in place a policy to charge for parking at park and ride locations. Look what happened; not only have they lost out on the increased ridership but also some of their previous customers. In one breath, Mayor Dianne Watts says they are not happy with the parking charge and in another, Coun. Tom Gill announces forcing it on Surrey residents by putting up “No Parking” signage on the surrounding roadways. How about a solution that benefits everyone? Has anyone counted the cars now parking outside of the lot to see if they equal the reduction in the lot? I bet it does not and a number of people have simply realized it is no longer costeffective to take transit. P. Wakeman, Surrey

Roses to the officers in Newton for handing out tickets for smokers. I would like to invite them to come to the Fraser Valley Cancer Centre – they can ticket all the people who smoke outside the entrance. Every cancer patient and staff (I am a volunteer) has to walk through this every day, all day. I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket, we tell people all day to move but they don’t. They sit right in front of the “no smoking” signs. and they just don’t care. They even get mad and nasty at us for suggesting they move. We could use the help of those Newton officers. Rotten tomatoes to all the people who hold up the line in the supermarket when they take out their phones and phone someone instead of paying for their groceries. Or answer their phones instead of paying for their groceries. Or scream on their cellphones while waiting in line, sharing their call with everyone else. How rude can you get? Take your phone and shove it! A pail full of rotten tomatoes to the man living in a house across my backyard for letting his dog bark all morning. Take the dog out for a walk instead of leaving it in a yard! Being polite is not going to harm you. If you can’t live with your neighbours, you should move to the woods. Many roses to our wonderful neighbourhood Now newspaper delivery person, Andy. It did not go unnoticed that while delivering your papers, you were also picking up litter and garbage on your route. You rock! Rotten tomatoes to all you bleeding hearts who say we need all illegal suites in Surrey. I say to you guys that you can have anything you want, if you legally change the zoning and pay your taxes that are owed. It seems everyone thinks other homeowners should pay for their owed taxes. And they don’t feel guilty at all about breaking the bylaws of the city and laugh at the rest of the homeowners who are paying the right amount of taxes and don’t break the rules. Where exactly does crime in Surrey start anyway? Oh, and by the way, how much is owed to Revenue Canada for undeclared income? There should be a $100 finders fee paid by the City of Surrey for reporting cheaters with illegal suites. A small price to pay for millions of dollars in lost revenue.

SURREY — Some of Surrey’s most talented teens performed at the eighth annual Surrey Shines talent show Saturday. The event, hosted by the Youth Arts Council of Surrey, featured music, dance and magic at Surrey Arts Centre. Lara West, a member of the Arts Council of Surrey, said the level of talent she sees at their age is amazing. “They are just so talented and professional, and all are very, very wonderful to work with,” she said. Participants in the youth-led talent show are between the ages of 13 and 21. Amrit Rai, president of the youth arts council, thinks it’s important to highlight the talent and the more positive parts of the community with events such as these. “I think it’s an amazing way to get youth involved,” Rai said. “In the five years I’ve been here, I’ve seen more and more engagement, which is really good to see.” Acts included Switch to Black, Sudnya Dance Academy, Richard Tichelman, Miguel Maravilla and Charity Cruz, Victoria Strachan, Cassidy Poulton, XBa Dance Company, Panic Picnic, Spiral Dance Company, Angela Boer, Just 4 Kicks School of Dance, Alexis Lynn, Nhemy Cepeda, Billy Hseuh and Alanna & Brianne.

Feature sheet dishes change frequently, as customer feedback is taken into account and both popular and new items appear on the menu, like kale, quinoa and chicken salad ($14.50), steak friets with blue cheese garlic butter ($19.50) and an Oreo cookie jar ($8). Yes, that means homemade whipped Oreo cheesecake in a jar. The space here is a sight to see, too, outfitted with a skull locker and custom Sicis mosaic floor. Not only do they look ridiculously pretty, they actually offer great support to the ankles and arches and have great traction — and no more contact with the damp, sweat-soaked floor. While many mud masks are uncomfortable (burning and stinging is never a good sign in our books!), Consonant’s DHE Mask, which contains Manicouagan clay, feels like a dream. Plus, with bonus ingredients like willow bark and tea tree exact (touted for their purification properties), fruit oils (for hydration and radiance) and alpha hydroxy enzymes (gentle exfoliants), it’s an all-natural recipe for a glowing complexion.

If clearing out your closet or spending less money on clothes is part of your plan for 2014, then we suggest you check out Mine & Yours. Inspired by the trenddriven consignment stores in LA, this downtown boutique purchases or trades clothes with Vancouver’s most stylish shoppers. They describe it as a revolving community closet, filled with party dresses, casual wear, and killer shoes. We spotted a $40 Versace skirt, four pairs of Christian Louboutins at $300 per pair, and a Vince leather shift dress for $190. Expect to find brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton alongside Wilfred and Topshop. Items are priced to move quickly, and they pay cash instead of using a complicated and time consuming consignment system (which also means they tend to get the best stuff).

M

aking music is a distinctly human endeavor. It is a science as much as it as an art form. Music notes march across the staff lines in mathematical precision. The principles of physics account for how sound is made and enhanced by instruments. Basic biology aids a singer to effectively use the human voice to project beautiful sounds that we recognize as music. And thanks to all those sciences, for sure, but really – music is just plain magic. Music has the power to unite us, inspire us, and the language is universal. It is a pity that we don’t sing out as an everyday practice. OK, so some of you do. I hear you when I am out walking about. But mostly it’s the iPod plugged in, obstructing the sounds around you and discouraging you to sing out using your own personal instrument. I’m telling you, it’s OK to sing out loud and ditch your electronic device. No batteries required. And you don’t have to have the skills of an opera singer to participate in this movement. Bring back folk music and sing in the streets.

Of course, it is a real treat to listen to the classically-trained deliver the ultimate in vocal achievement: opera. Somehow, the idea of opera scares us. Again, I have to say – really? Maybe you just haven’t given it a chance. So here is an event for you: Vancouver Opera presents an evening of opera excerpts from the world’s most popular masterpieces at Surrey Arts Centre on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Be seduced by Carmen, entertained by The Barber of Seville. The tunes will be familiar, even if the words are not. A quartet of talented performers will take you on a journey full of beautiful sounds and high-flying acrobatics of superb opera singing. This is an evening that will appeal to the whole family, and tickets are just under $23 for adults and about $12 for children. As an extra incentive, there will be free giveaways for everyone who attends. Phone the arts centre box office at 604-501-5566. Just think, if opera hadn’t been so popular way back when, we would not today enjoy the offerings of musical theatre. The big Broadway type of musical evolved from the stylings of grand opera. The “triple threat” demanded from the performers (sing, dance and act) is sort of our modern opera. Opera fans, I did say sort of, so don’t go all off-key on me. The trend in musicals today seems to be to transform a movie into a musical, like Legally Blonde and, now, Shrek. Successful on Broadway and in London’s West End, Shrek, The Musical has been a rousing success in the professional world, and now we have it opening in Burnaby. Surrey’s Chad Matchette has been involved with

making musicals locally for as long as I can remember. As a fan of the movie, producer and director Matchette couldn’t wait to bring the show to the stage. “I had seen the show in London and then again in the States, and fell in love with it,” he said. “I then kept a close eye on the rights, and when it became available, we jumped on it.” Matchette has now formed his own company, Align Entertainment, with a few of his friends who share his vision and experience in musical theatre. Ranae Miller (Princess Fiona) loves the way Shrek breaks the classic fairy tale rules, and Will Hopkins put his skill of emulating the Shrek voice to good use. He plays the big green ogre. It’s not easy being green. Will also has the challenge of not melting out of his makeup. Align Entertainment’s production of Shrek, the Musical has a cast of 34 adult actors and 34 children, massive sets and a full orchestra – quite the undertaking. Making an animated film into a musical using real people is a challenge, but Matchette is confident Shrek fans will love this production. “We’d love to see you at the swamp,” he said. Shrek, The Musical runs from Feb. 7 to 22 at Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby. Tickets start at $25 (plus fees) and can be purchased through Ticketmaster. This is a reasonable price considering the mega costs involved. Professional touring companies bringing Broadway musicals our way have tickets prices hovering around $200. That evening of opera, or singing from a swamp, is looking mighty attractive from this perspective. melminty@telus.net

Surrey-based musicians Rykka and Good for Grapes are among performers at this summer’s big Squamish Valley Music Festival. The annual concert will feature headliners Eminem, Bruno Mars and Arcade Fire, Live Nation Canada announced on Jan. 29. The three-day festival will be held Aug. 8 to 10 at the Logger Sports Grounds and Centennial Fields in Squamish. “This event represents a turning point not only for B.C.’s live music industry, but also for Canada’s event industry as a whole,” said Paul Haagenson, president of Live Nation. The company will invest $12 million into the 2014 edition of the festival.

City-wide Wi-Fi would take the hurt out of phone bills DotComrade Christopher Poon Columnist

his week in Japan, the city of Osaka rolled out a new initiative offering free wireless Internet city-wide. Apparently this is a big deal for Japan, as freeto-use Wi-Fi hotspots are few and far between. The Osaka initiative is primarily aimed at aiding tourists in the city, and reminds me of an initiative that Whistler had been looking into during my time up there as a reporter.

Hoping to provide guests and residents with even more reason to stay in the Village, Whistler officials looked into the feasibility of covering the entire Village in delicious, free Wi-Fi. When it was learned it would cost around $500,000 to implement, with an annual operating cost of $250,000, Whistler council backed down, but the intent was commendable. Elsewhere in Canada, several cities offer free

Wi-Fi at downtown cores or city-run facilities. The City of Edmonton offers it to anyone at many city parks and recreation centres, while Windsor’s business improvement association maintains a free network throughout its downtown core. In Surrey, free Wi-Fi is available at libraries and city hall, but will we ever see it across the city? Due to Surrey’s geographic size, the

Free Wi-Fi zones could keep smartphone customers happy, unlike this guy.

Five Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Home Warranty Insurance Buyers of new homes in B.C. are protected by Canada’s strongest construction defect insurance. Those who learn as much as they can about their home warranty insurance will get the most out of their coverage. 1. Make note of each coverage expiry date. The home warranty insurance provided on new singlefamily and multi-family homes built for sale in B.C. protects against different defects for specific periods of time, including 2 years on labour and materials (some limits apply), 5 years on the building envelope (including water penetration) and 10 years on the structure. Review your policy for details. 2. Know what’s covered and what isn’t. Make sure you understand the extent and limitations of your coverage by reading through your insurance documents. You can also search the HPO’s free online Residential Construction Performance Guide. 3. Make a claim. If you need to make a claim for defects not otherwise taken care of by your builder, be sure to send details in writing to your warranty provider prior to the expiry of coverage. 4. Maintain your home. Maintain your home to protect your coverage, and if you receive a maintenance manual for your home, read it and follow it. 5. Learn more. Check out the Homeowner Protection Office’s Guide to Home Warranty Insurance in British Columbia, a free download from www.hpo.bc.ca.

likelihood of this coming to fruition anytime soon isn’t good, but as demand grows and people become more attached to their devices, businesses and cities alike are seeing free Wi-Fi as a key method of keeping customers and residents happy. This is evidenced in a recent initiative rolled out by Shaw Communications, which has set up free Wi-Fi hotspots around the Lower Mainland accessible only to Shaw users. Nobody asked them to do this but they went ahead and did it anyway and, as a Shaw user myself, I can say that it does work in keeping me content. This is especially good news when it seems cellphone data plans seem to be getting inexplicably more expensive while offering less. For example, both Fido and Rogers both offer 500MB and 1GB of data on what they dub to be their “Max Plans.” These are the plans that users are required to sign up for if they would like a premium smartphone, such as the latest iPhone. How much do they charge you for these pitiful amounts of data? The 500MB plan costs $75, while the 1GB plan comes in at $85. Seriously. In a day and age when people are relying more and more on their smartphones for work, socializing, reading news and entertainment, what better time to gouge the customers that would be using the most data? Remember those awesome 6GB plans of yesteryear? Let’s do that again. But as Wi-Fi becomes more and more available, perhaps it’ll go a long way in eventually forcing users from having to rely on stingy phone carriers and, heaven forbid, make people happy. I am reminded now of a UN report released in 2011 that sparked debate over Internet being a basic human right. With that in mind, how interesting would it be if a city did offer free Wi-Fi across the board and collected taxes to fund it? The private sector may not be too stoked on the idea, but it could get more people online and save them money in the long run. Food for thought.

Duo details ‘Gender Failure’ in pair of shows at Surrey theatre

‘Changing Minds’ musical comedy at Seaquam

SEE VIDEO CLIP OF SHOW WITH LAYAR SURREY — Gender Failure was originally conceived as “a show for us, a show that gave us a place to talk about everything we kept to ourselves most of the time, a show that directly addressed trans issues and realities, a show that wasn’t meant to make anyone comfortable or nostalgic.” So writes Ivan Coyote, a Vancouver-based storyteller and musician, in the introduction of the new book version of Gender Failure (Arsenal Pulp Press), co-written with Rae Spoon. Together, they came up with the first ideas for Gender Failure in a truck parked in a hotel lot, after performing their first collaborative show, You Are Here, at a suburban theatre in the spring of 2012. The stage production of Gender Failure, which debuts at Surrey Arts Centre this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 7 and 8), explores their “gender failures” in highly personal detail, with music, storytelling, video and animation. “I definitely have one dress shoe planted firmly outside my comfort zone with this show,” the Yukon-raised Coyote told the Now. Gender Failure has been described as “equal part hilarious and heartbreaking.” Tickets for the weekend shows in Surrey range from $15 to $35 via 604-501-5566 and tickets.surrey.ca.

Tom Zillich

Rae Spoon (left), a Montreal-based musician and writer, and Ivan Coyote, who lives in Vancouver, mix storytelling, music, video and animation in their Gender Failure show, performed this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 7 and 8) at Surrey Arts Centre, at 8 p.m. nightly.

A new comedic musical written specifically for teen actors will be staged by Seaquam Theatre Company this month. Changing Minds is at the North Delta secondary school from Feb. 19 to 22. The show is described as Glee meets Freaky Friday meets Grease, with “an exciting, tuneful and fun theatrical performance that tackles the humour in teen life.” The story addresses high school politics, human connections and gender roles, too, as it follows the main characters of Kyle, a charismatic, attractive guy, and Natalie, an ambitious, high-achieving girl, after they get into an argument in front of an enchanted wishing well. Tessa’s Tournament brings together BC’s best Michael Booth

Now staff Twitter @boothnow

Purple will be the colour of choice this weekend when some of the top senior girls basketball teams in the province gather in Fleetwood for the annual Tessa Tournament. The event is held in honour of the memory of former provincial team and Holy Cross Crusaders’ star Tessa Beauchamp, who passed away in 2012 after a long battle with brain cancer. “It’s bittersweet for me and my family for sure,” said Holy Cross coach Steve Beauchamp, Tessa’s father. “Just today I was

running around picking up donations and the support we receive from the community is so great. At the same time, I would rather be doing it for another reason. It’s hard at times for me, but some of the things the (Tessa Beauchamp) Foundation is doing is good to see and it helps to fill some of the void that’s there.” Tessa’s favourite colour was purple, and many teams at last year’s inaugural event sported purple socks, wrist bands or arm bands in her memory. “It’s pretty neat to see how some of the teams respond,” Beauchamp said. “The girls from Wellington and Gleneagle and other teams are all doing different things

and have planned activities to help. It’s pretty humbling to be honest and it makes it pretty special. One of the traditions we’ve started at the tournament is halfway through the warm-ups, both teams gather together for a pregame group photo. We post those up on website and it’s neat to see. The players are there to battle and compete, but they are also there to support a cause that they’ve embraced.” The support for the cause extends to community as well. At Fresh Street Farms at Fraser Highway and 160th Street, manager Chris Phillipson has his staff decked out in purple tournament T-shirts and the store will be accepting donations.

“It’s such a treat to see,” Beauchamp said. “The floral area is all decked out in purple and they have the wristbands there. This is a business in the local community where Tessa grew up so to see that support is really special.” The Tessa Beauchamp Foundation awards $500 scholarships at several tournaments in the Lower Mainland plus a special $1,000 scholarship at the end of the year that is open to every female basketball player in the province. In addition to the scholarship money, the foundation has used it’s resources to fund the construction of a basketball court in Kenya and is currently see CRUSADERS › page 37

Buckle up, the final weeks of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s premier division campaign promises to have more lead changes than a high school basketball game. With three weeks left in the season, five teams are clustered within two points of each other atop the standings, ensuring that every point earned — or lost — will be crucial. “We’re in first place now, but the standings are incredibly tight,” said Surrey United Firefighters coach Rob Reed. “I honestly have not seen anything like this in this league, well, ever. There are five teams that have a legitimate shot at winning this thing. It’s tight at the bottom of the standings too with teams trying to avoid relegation. Everyone in the league, for different reasons, has meaningful games right to the end of the season. It’s quite exciting.” The Firemen are currently tied with Coquitlam’s Metro Ford Wolves for top spot with perennial power West Van lurking one point behind. Newton’s CCB-RT United and defending league champion Columbus are lurking two points off the lead. At the other end of the tables, Newton’s ICST Pegasus has mounted a charge to escape the relegation zone. After last weekend the Horsemen were in last place with 16 points, but have two games in hand on 10th place Norvan, who sit just four points ahead. “Every team has pressure to get points right now, but the most pressure is on the teams trying to avoid relegation,” Reed said. “That’s a lot of pressure. The top teams are all in great position to qualify for the Provincial Cup and for us, winning the league is a very big goal. We have a great opportunity and we have to make sure we get the job done.” Reed added with a laugh, “All we have to do is beat out four other teams.” On the pitch last week all three Surrey entries posted victories. The biggest win came on the North Shore Friday night where Pegasus stunned West Van 2-1. West Van opened the scoring in the 20th minute, but the Horsemen wasted no time

responding as Sahil Sandhu sidestepped several West Van defenders and then fed a pass to Reynold Stewart for the equalizer. Pegasus maintained their offensive pressure, but Stewart, Sandhu and Azad Palani were all denied by the West Van goalkeeper. After withstanding a West Van offensive burst to open the second half, the Horsemen were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 84th minute when a David Samra pass sent Stewart free on a breakaway, a dash that ended with the game-winning goal. Meanwhile back in Newton, CCB-RT United climbed up the standing by taming Coquitlam’s Wolves 2-0. Goaltenders dominated the game until the 70th minute when Navid Mashinchi delivered a crossing pass into the box for Nick Soolsma to volley home. United sealed the win when Soolsma bagged his second goal of the game in the 85th minute to provide a measure of insurance. In Langley Saturday, the defending provincial champion Firefighters moved into a share of first place with a 3-1 win over the Langley Hurricanes. Langley dominated the early stages of the contest and opened the scoring on a Niko Marcina goal. Marcina had a chance to add to the Hurricanes lead, but his penalty shot in the 30th minute clanged off the goal post. Shortly afterward the tide turned in the game when Langley’s Amar Mander was sent off with a red card. Surrey tied the game seconds before the halftime whistle when Sean Einarsson headed home a pass from Vinnie Stewart. The second half was all Surrey as the Firefighters took advantage of their shorthanded hosts. Surrey took the lead in the 50th minute when Nigel Marples volleyed a Steve Kindel corner kick into the net. Surrey iced the game in the 70th minute when Einarsson set up Stewart for the insurance marker. United will have their hands full Friday night at Newton Athletic Park (8:30 p.m.) when they take on a desperate Pegasus squad in the latest installment of the Surrey Derby.

Crusaders’ showcase features top-ranked teams ‹ from page35 building a house in the Philippines. Three current players — Michelle Bos, Rachel Beauchamp (Tessa’s younger sister) and Amy Sprangers — will use their spring break this year to travel to the Philippines to help with that project. It’s said that charity begins at home and Holy Cross has that base covered as well. The school will hold its annual Tessa Charity Day Feb. 21 where students and teachers will get involved in assorted charities and projects in the Fleetwood community. The goal is to have everyone working together to do something to make the community a better place. Sadly, the date of this year’s charity event would have been Tessa’s 21st birthday. This weekend’s tournament features some of the best teams in class AA and AAA in the province Holy Cross is currently ranked second in B.C. among class AAA schools. Oak Bay, Riverside, South Kamloops are all ranked among the top 10 while Gleneagle, Fleetwood Park and Burnaby South are

The players are there to battle and compete, but they are also there to support a cause that they’ve embraced. The tournament is not a conventional event with a championship finale, but instead is intended as a showcase of girls’ basketball in the province. Teams play a fixed schedule with tournament games taking place at Fleetwood Park and Surrey Christian as well as the main event at Holy Cross. The Crusaders’ schedule has them in their home gym playing South Kamloops at 2:45 p.m. Friday followed by Saturday games against Oak Bay (9 a.m.) and Wellington (1:30 p.m.).

Tips

Prepare your car for sale When selling a used car, you want to make sure your vehicle stands out from the crowd. After all, you only get one chance at a great first impression. By taking the time to prep your car ahead of time, you can showcase all that your car has to offer and attract more potential buyers. Here are five tips to get your car primed and ready to sell: Fix what is necessary: If you’ve been putting off making small repairs to your vehicle, now is the time to invest a little money. Replace broken taillights, old wipers, burnt out interior lights and fill in windshield chips. Pay attention to the lights that pop-up on your dashboard when you start your car. Did you forget to reset your oil change indicator

or does your “check engine” light always come on? You will want to resolve a warning light because this could be an immediate red flag for a shopper. Visit your mechanic: It’s a good idea to take your car to a mechanic for a quick inspection before you hang up the For Sale sign. He or she will be able to tell you if there are any issues that require your attention. If your mechanic does find serious problems, then you’ll want to weigh the cost and benefits of fixing this – will it help you make the sale or does it make more sense to sell the vehicle as is? Compile your records: Interested car shoppers will want to know how well the vehicle was maintained and serviced while it was

under your ownership. Gather together any records or receipts so they can easily be presented if someone asks to see them. Include the vehicle history report: Include a CarProof vehicle history report as part of the vehicle selling process. This report will let shoppers know that you’re an open and honest seller who is willing to give them all the details in order to ensure a great used car buying transaction. If your car is parked and for sale where the public can see it, post your CarProof report in the window so interested buyers can see the history of the vehicle. Scrub the outside and the inside: Take your vehicle to the car wash and give the exterior a deep clean. On the inside, vacuum under and in between the seats, clean out the cupholders and the glove box. Wipe around all the knobs, switches and the gearshift, and give the dashboard a good wash. Get rid of any window or bumper stickers or personal touches you’ve added to the car. If you’re driving the car while trying to sell it, keep up on regular maintenance and don’t let crumbs or dirt pile up. These tips will help to ensure that you sell your vehicle quickly – and for the right price – and will result in a great experience for both you and the buyer.

Care facility hearing lasts two nights White Rock council hears from hundreds on controversial proposal Christopher Poon

Now staff Twitter @questionchris

WHITE ROCK — More than 200 local residents came out Monday and Tuesday to see how council would react to a public hearing on a proposed eight-storey care facility that would be built at the Evergreen Baptist Care Facility, located at 14th Avenue and Oxford Street. Held over the course of two nights due to the large number of speakers, the hearing saw more than 100 speakers take to the podium and further 300 had sent in letters stating their support or opposition to the project. The proposed development would see an eight-storey building erected in the parking lot at the current Evergreen site on Oxford Street that would add 92 care beds to the current facility, bringing the total to 199. The expansion is being contracted by Fraser Health in an effort to increase care beds in the area. Those in opposition to the proposed development primarily seemed to be residents of the neighbouring Belaire condo complex who are worried about the impact the new building would have on their ocean views, as well as property values. According to development plans, if the facility were built, some Belaire residents could see a concrete wall erected anywhere from 40 to 60 feet from their windows. Former White Rock Coun. Margaret

A proposed care facility in White Rock has caused quite a stir. (Photo: KEVIN HILL) Woods wondered why council would even consider “piling buildings on top of buildings. “Everybody loves a nice new home…but this is not about providing beds, this is about development and maximizing profits,” she said. “Single family homes have to be 50 feet from their neighbours. Something’s gone amiss in our planning department and I suggest you deny this and send Evergreen back to the drawing board.” Other concerns were about the required removal of 16 trees to accommodate the building and the impact an additional 92 beds would have on local area traffic. One resident wondered why council was even considering the project at all as there was no guarantee that White Rock residents would even make it into the additional beds. “This is counter to the interests of the city and community and the vast majority that will fill the rooms will not come from White Rock,” said Barry Miller. “They are collected from the entire Fraser Health district then depositied at the unit. Aside from reinforcing the view of White Rock, what is the benefit to the city? Additional burden to taxed infrastructure?”

However, those in opposition all seemed to agree that more care beds are needed, just not using the current proposal. Speaking in favour of the proposal, South Surrey resident Dawn Turner said the community needs to have respect for their seniors and do all they can to address the growing need for care beds before the issue gets too out of hand. “Close to three out of every 10 Canadians is a baby boomer, do we have enough beds now? No. Is there a waiting list? Yes. We need more beds, and we have to do something now not later,” she said. “The oldest of the baby boomers is 65. We are now at 2014 and how many are waiting? Why are we not thinking ahead and planning ahead?” Evergreen’s executive director, Stephen Bennett, spoke to provide a bit of history on the current building, noting that the first building opened in 1962 offering just 40 beds at the time. Since then, the facility has grown and has been home to more than 4,000 seniors. Suggestions that the facility’s B and C wings be demolished first and the new building built in their wake were also dismissed by Bennett, as relocation simply wasn’t an option for those currently residing in those sections. “Fraser Health has said no Evergreen development if we have to move residents,” he said, adding that the stress of relocation could be too much for the frail tenants to handle. Bennett urged council to look past the present in planning for the future. Council is set to hold the final vote on the development at the Feb. 24 council meeting.

The City of Surrey is completing a Ravine Stability Assessment of ravine slopes and channel banks along various watercourses throughout the City. This is part of an ongoing biennial Ravine Stability Assessment. From January 23 to April 30, 2014, representatives of the City’s Consultant may require access through private property to safely inspect these ravines. All field staff working on this project will carry identification and an information letter from the City of Surrey. Residents who see field staff in or near their property can ask for these documents. We appreciate your co-operation in enabling field engineers to enter your property in order to access these ravine slopes, channel banks, and watercourses. For further information, contact: Lance Thompson (City of Surrey) at 604-591-4736 www.surrey.ca

SURREY — Surrey and White Rock are applying to the National Energy Board to be intervenors at the upcoming public hearing related to the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. The project involves a twinning of the existing pipeline between Edmonton and Burnaby and includes a 14-kilometre segment that runs through north Surrey. Surrey Coun. Bruce Hayne said while council is applying for intervenor status, it doesn’t mean it is coming out in opposition to the project, like the cities of Vancouver and Burnaby have. He added that the city is going into the process neutrally. Hayne said Surrey hasn’t experienced any problems with the existing pipeline to his knowledge. “I know, for instance, there’s been spills in Burnaby from that pipeline, but that still, was actually a City of Burnaby contractor working in the area who didn’t have a Kinder Morgan rep on site as they should have, and apparently hit the pipe five times before they managed to break it,” he said. “It was absolutely human error, and human error happens, there’s no question.” White Rock Coun. Helen Fathers, who brought forth the motion for her city, echoed Hayne’s comments, saying the City by the Sea has yet to form an opinion on the project, but wanted to ensure they had the option of submitting something at a later date, hence the intervenor application.

ARTS & LIFE ‘Shrek’ brings swamp to stage ArtsScene Melanie Minty Columnist

M

aking music is a distinctly human endeavor. Of course, it is a treat to listen to the classically-trained deliver the ultimate in vocal achievement: opera. A quartet of talented performers will take you on a journey full of beautiful sounds and highflying acrobatics of superb opera singing. This is an evening that will appeal to the whole family, and tickets are just under $23 for adults and about $12 for children. As an extra incentive, there will be free giveaways

for everyone who attends. Surrey’s Chad Matchette has been involved with making musicals locally for as long as I can remember. Tickets start at $25 (plus fees), via Ticketmaster. This is a reasonable price considering the mega costs involved.

at New Westminster Secondary. “It is a very rare occasion to be able to see Dave Proznick perform with his adult children, who are all acclaimed musicians themselves,” Margaux Molson, a member of the Beach House board of directors, told the Now. The concert will raise funds for the company’s two productions this summer, which are Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors and the more kid-friendly The Three Munschketeers, a Debbie Patterson-written adaptation of five stories by Robert Munsch. The shows will be performed on an outdoor stage at Crescent Beach in August. The Feb. 13 “Evening of Music” will also feature jazz guitarist Oliver Gannon, singer Glenda Rae with guitarist Brett Wade, Jordan Carrier and Heidi McCurdy. “Each of these musicians is donating his or her entertainment as a fundraising gesture,” Molson noted.

Bassist Jodi Proznick is a musical guest during a benefit concert for Beach House Theatre Company on Thursday, Feb. 13. “For the price of a $25 ticket, music enthusiasts can enjoy eight artists sharing their music at the Wheelhouse Theatre, at Earl Marriott Secondary.” Tickets for the concert are available online at www. beachhousetheatre.org.
