Strike will close schools for one day

Surrey teachers rally on King George Boulevard SEE THE LATEST ON JOB ACTION BY USING LAYAR Christopher Poon

Now staff Twitter @questionchris

SURREY — Schools in the province’s largest school district will be shut down on Thursday (May 29) as part of the escalation of job action to rotating strikes by B.C. teachers. The announcement was made Tuesday by B.C. Teachers Federation President Jim Iker after the province announced last week that they would look at cutting back teachers’ wages by five per cent if an agreement was not reached by the end of June. Teachers planned to hold a rally Wednesday (May 21) once schools were out on King George Boulevard between 74th and 76th

avenues. The province also announced last week they would no longer be seeking a 10-year deal with teachers, instead opting for a six-year deal and offering a $1,200 signing bonus if done before July. Education Minister and SurreyFleetwood MLA Peter Fassbender said he was “disappointed” by the BCTF’s decision, noting the government had made concessions by no longer seeking the 10-year deal. “We put a signing bonus on the table for teachers again to show that we understand the financial issues they were talking about,” he said following the BCTF’s announcement. “I sincerely hope that the teachers of this province, the parents realize that our goal is a negotiated settlement.” The rotating strikes will fall over the course of four days next week, with different districts being affected from Monday to Thursday. Surrey school district, which includes White Rock, will be impacted Thursday, while schools in Delta will be affected Wednesday. Surrey school board chair Shawn Wilson said he began receiving phone calls from concerned parents within an hour of the BCTF making their announcement. “Anytime we’re talking about closing

schools there’s going to be disappointment and aggravation,” he said. “Obviously they want to know as early as possible what we might be able to do to help support them so staff is working on that now.” Wilson said at this point, parents are being asked to monitor the websites of their children’s schools for the latest and any advisories on whether or not they should send their kids to school will be posted there. Monday, May 26 is scheduled as a professional development day, so parents are now facing two days of having to find somewhere for their children to be next week. “So that’s what’s been concerning a lot of parents is that there’s a Pro-D day on Monday and then along comes Thursday and they’re off again, so it’s kind of like double jeopardy in the same week,” he explained. “You might get some parents that are of the mindset that they’re going to send their kids to school come hell or high water, but I can’t recall if that’s ever happened before.” Teachers began first stage job action in April. The last time B.C. teachers walked off the job was in the fall of 2005 when they illegally went on strike for two weeks. cpoon@thenownewspaper.com

Ten teens packed in truck survive crash on road described as ‘party central’ Tom Zytaruk

Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk

SURREY — Police are investigating two traffic incidents, one in South Surrey and the other in Whalley, where riders were hurled from automobiles this past weekend. Mounties suspect alcohol may have been a contributing factor in both cases. Eight passengers, in their late teens and early 20s, were thrown from the box of a Dodge pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old boy at 12:04 a.m. Saturday. Police said the driver lost control of the pickup and it hit a curb, at 192nd Street and 34th Avenue in South Surrey. There were two people in the cab and eight people – five girls and three boys – in the back. These were ejected as the pickup did a full flip, landing on its tires. Four were able to walk away from the crash but others were taken to Royal Columbian and Surrey Memorial Hospitals to be treated for broken ribs, a concussion and other injuries that weren’t considered to be life threatening.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said it was “amazing” no one was killed or seriously injured. “Our officers could have easily been knocking on doors in the middle of the night advising family members that their loved ones were critically injured or deceased,” he said. In the meantime, a 23-year-old Surrey man sustained critical head injuries after being thrown from the back of an SUV that had its tailgate down. This happened at about 5:30 p.m. Monday, in the 10100-block of 128A Street in Whalley. Police said the SUV, driven by a 23-year-old Surrey man, accelerated quickly with three young men in the back. Two were able to hang on to the sides, but the one in the middle fell onto his head on the asphalt road. “We usually find these happen after a series of bad decisions,” Paquet said of the incidents. “You need to give respect to the risks involved in riding in any vehicle without using the vehicle’s safety restraints.” Paquet said the drivers in both cases

Industries Ltd. on the corner of 190th Street and 34th Avenue, wants police to pay more attention to the area. “I have called the RCMP twice in the last four months regarding vehicles driving through our vegetation and performing burnouts in our parking lot,” Sutton told the Now. He said it’s “party central” every Friday

night along 34th, between 192nd and 188th. “The RCMP doesn’t seem to care about any of this as it’s not deemed important enough,” he said. “This area needs regular patrol especially since it’s clearly a party spot every Friday and Saturday... It’s no surprise that there was this incident.” Paquet said that “as many other similar cases, this is an issue that needs to be addressed with a collaborative approach between our community and the police. He said the Surrey RCMP’s annual summer park patrols initiative is designed to address problems like this. “The district commander, who is aware of the issues, will manage the resources available to target this area with enhanced police presence and extra patrols,” he said.

DELTA — Parents hoping to have the rural school bus program restored shouldn’t count on the Corporation of Delta taking on a funding role. Talks have been taking place behind the scenes on what can be done to bring back rural bus service the Delta school board eliminated last year due to provincial funding cuts. Nothing has reached the Delta council level yet and it’s not likely a proposal seeking civic funding would be viewed too favourably, said Coun. Robert Campbell. “I’m not in favour of making agreements to help the school district, even though people say we’re all one community and one taxpayer. To me, we have these separations for a reason and funding is set up like that for a reason,” he said. Bus service was cancelled for all students except those with special needs, a move that angered many parents, especially those in rural East Delta where there are no sidewalks or regular transit service.

School board officials met with Education Minister Peter Fassbender, asking him to revisit the new funding formula, trying to explain the unique geography of Delta. The minister responded by saying a technical review committee would examine Delta’s case, but the funding cut was upheld. The district has been able to accommodate a few students in rural areas, allowing them to share space on buses with special needs kids, as long as there’s space available. Meanwhile, one parent in Boundary Bay organized a deal with the school district to have one of the district’s academy buses pick up some kids. This spring, Delta’s agricultural advisory committee discussed the issue. It was noted that a school bus would cost approximately $54,000 per year, which amounts to roughly $900 per student. DFI president David Ryall said the organization is still working on the issue, hopeful it will come up with a solution. “Kids have no choice in the rural district but to have their parents drive them,” he said.

Haevischer Tuesday, Mohan had more hope than she’s had in a long time. ”In my opinion, the Crown has a very strong case,” Mohan said outside court. “I’m hoping and I’m praying that justice will be done.” A verdict may still be months away.

Summer night market coming to Cloverdale Matt Law

SURREY — Cloverdale Exhibition Fairgrounds will be home to the Lower Mainland’s newest night market this summer. Organizers of the new Surrey Night Market plan to create a family-oriented, multicultural venue with foods from around the world, starting July 4. They are modelling the event on night markets held in Richmond, Chinatown and North Vancouver. “It’s multicultural, it’s multinational. Everybody will be there. We hope to have food and vendors from across the board, not from any one community,” said Satbir Cheema, one of the market’s organizers. While the market is still in the early stages of planning, Cheema says the organizers have already fielded more than 15 inquiries from food vendors since announcing the market’s creation late last week. Organizers are seeking applications from food and retail vendors, as well as

performers and musicians. “We’ll be encouraging local artisans and small businesses, especially people who don’t have space and need an outlet and an opportunity to be able to come and showcase their products,” said Cheema. “If there is a local artist, local bands, local performers, dancers, they will have free opportunity to come on the stage and perform.” Despite criticism on social media that the Cloverdale venue is not easily accessible by transit, Cheema says the location makes the most sense for the family-focused market. Water, washrooms, hydro and free parking are already provided at the Cloverdale site. “We thought about it a lot, and this is the best place for the long-term, and they have the facilities,” he said. “If we do it anywhere else, we would have to build that infrastructure.” The inaugural Surrey Night Market is set to open July 4 at the Cloverdale Exhibition Fairgrounds. It will run Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. until Aug. 30. For details, visit Surreynightmarket.com.

NEWS Missing person

‘My son waits for his dad every single day’ Tom Zytaruk

Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk

SURREY — A Delta boy continues to wait for his dad who’s been missing for over a year now. The Surrey RCMP’s Missing Persons Unit is once again appealing for help in finding Vaclav “Walter” Simek, 53, who was reported missing on April 10, 2013. Maria Gonzalez, his ex-wife, believes his disappearance was planned, and possibly brought on by depression or another mental illness. The couple divorced after 13 years of marriage. They have a 13-year-old son. Gonzalez, who lives in Delta, described Simek as a “good dad” who saw their son every weekend. “Suddenly he stopped returning calls and coming to pick him up,” she said. “My son waits for his dad every single day.” Gonzalez said Simek, an avid camper, had been living in an RV park in White Rock before he vanished. “It’s quite very strange,” she said of the

case. “We have no clue whatsoever.” Simek’s visa account and bank account have not been touched, she said. Simek was last seen on March 7, 2013. Police believe Vaclav Simek someone dropped him off near 200th Street and 40th Avenue in Langley. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said the investigation has thus far revealed that Simek rented a car in late February/early March and used it to move some of his belongings to an unknown place and the car was returned on March 7. Simek is six feet three inches tall, was 210 pounds and has blue eyes and had brown hair. Police ask anyone with information to contact the Surrey RCMP’s Missing Person’s Unit at 604-599-0502, quoting file number 2013-43817.

Firefighters surprise students with scholarships Matt Law

Now contributor Twitter @mjlaw_photo

SURREY — Six Surrey firefighters were already on hand when the fire alarm rang at 10 a.m. in Ms. Mariche’s Grade 12 classroom. They had arrived at Enver Creek Secondary School on Tuesday morning without much fanfare – no lights or sirens, just a blank envelope in hand as they walked into the school. The alarm, which was part of a routine drill, was not meant to accompany their announcement that Indu Mangat, 18, had been chosen to receive a $3,000 scholarship, but the coincidence was well timed. Her classmates applauded over the sound of the fire alarm as Mangat, who was not aware she would be receiving the honour, stood to receive her award. After the presentation and making her way outside to join the rest of her school in the fire drill, the soft-spoken student posed for a photo and thanked the firemen. “I feel really privileged that out of all the applicants I got chosen. I feel very honoured,” said Mangat, who plans to study sciences at UBC and wants to work in developing countries. Mangat says she never thought she would be the one to win the award, but those around her feel the award confirmed what they already knew. Enver Creek Secondary’s principal Tim Cross said the award couldn’t have gone to a more worthy student. “There’s lots of deserving kids, so you would like everyone to win an award, but Indu is one of the kids who has done outstanding work with our school, with blood drives and a variety of

In its first year, the scholarship was created to recognize students who have overcome challenges and are now helping their community. In total, Surrey firefighters distributed $15,000 in awards on Tuesday. Other recipients of the award include Leeza Robertson of Semiahmoo Secondary, Mary Teklu of Johnston Heights Secondary, Sukhi Dhindsa of L.A. Matheson Secondary and Theresa Tabert of City Central Learning Centre. The selected students all came out of

SURREY — A Surrey homicide suspect playing a “cat and mouse” game with police since Gregory Quesnelle, 32, was shot dead inside a townhouse at Rodeo Park Place Barry McQuarrie in Cloverdale on May 12 taunted investigators through a phone call to a Vancouver television station on Sunday. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is looking for 33-year-old Barry McQuarrie – aka “Bad Ass Barry” – in connection with the homicide, though he has not been charged. He is also wanted on outstanding arrest warrants not related to the homicide. McQuarrie told CTV news he didn’t kill Quesnelle and has no plans to turn himself in. “They have to do their job and find me,” he said. Police traced the call to a pay phone in Aldergrove and have released surveillance photos. They believe he’s still in the Lower Mainland, and ask anyone who sees him to call 911.

hose of you who know me know this – I am a big fan of Surrey’s youth. I believe this city has some of the most intelligent, talented, creative and classy kids on the planet. You see proof of this at one of my favourite annual events, the SASSY Awards, which honour the city’s most inspiring youth. You see it every year on stage at the Bell Centre, where students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities dance their way into your heart during the Surrey school district’s dance festival. And you can see proof of it, like I just did, at dance recitals all over Surrey. I watched in awe Sunday as my step-daughter Macayla and her Panorama School of Dance peers performed

like seasoned professionals at the Bell Centre, complete with heartfelt speeches of gratitude from the school’s graduating students after the recital’s finale. And you see it in these very pages – regular readers already know that the Now’s news team loves showcasing young people who are making a difference in our community. Just look at today’s front page for evidence of that. It’s easy to see that we have amazing kids among us. As a community – and as their parents – we should be proud. But on Saturday, my faith in youth – and in our community’s parenting abilities – took a big hit on the fairgrounds of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Fair. Now, I want to be fair here and not paint all fairgoers with the same brush. Did I see young, polite, well-behaved children thoroughly enjoying the rides and games with their parents? Absolutely I did. Did I see teenagers who were having a great time with their friends in a responsible, mature manner? Yes, I saw that, too. But if you were with me on Saturday, you would have seen many other, much

more disturbing things. You would have seen kids stumbling around from ride to ride blind drunk. You would have been shaking your head in disbelief as you watched girls looking as young as 12 walk by, seemingly engaged in a competition with their peers as to who could dress the most inappropriately for

young age). On the fairgrounds, you also would have seen cops confiscate many a mickey from under-aged drinkers. You would have heard a dad call his young son, who was maybe seven or eight, a crude name that rhymes with “wussy” because he wouldn’t go in the haunted house attraction.

If a day at the rodeo is any indication, we seriously need to up our game as parents. their age. And if you are a more conservative parent like me, perhaps your head would have also shaken when you saw the countless mohawk haircuts on kids – some of whom were so young they could barely walk (I know this comes down to personal taste but, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why parents would want their child to project that image at such a

And you would have heard this classy line from a young girl, whose voice sounded no older than 15 and who brought a boy into a port-a-potty (yes, a port-a-potty): “I hope you brought protection because I can’t afford birth control.” And finally, you would have seen a completely plastered, handcuffed young man – with his dad in tow – smack face first right into

my wife’s chest, followed closely by a cop who was struggling to corral him, despite the teen’s drunken efforts to make a clumsy escape. You also would have heard the news that alcohol is suspected after 10 young people left the rodeo the night before packed in a pickup truck – eight of them in the box – and miraculously survived after the driver lost control of the truck and it rolled, violently throwing the kids from the box (see page 3 for story). To say the least, a day at the rodeo does not leave you with the best impression of our city’s young people, or the hard work we parents do in raising our kids properly. In contrast, had you walked over the rodeo’s main stage on Sunday, you would have seen a much more positive representation of Surrey’s youth and their parents. The BC Junior Talent Search always gives a glimpse of the talent we have among our youth.

At the finals on Sunday, you would have heard beautiful young voices coming through the massive speakers, accompanied by the supportive cheers and hollers from proud parents (see page 37 for story). I wasn’t there this year but have been honoured in the past to help judge the contest and it always leaves me feeling good about Surrey’s families. The Cloverdale Rodeo and Fair is a proud tradition in Surrey and it does a lot of great things for our community. But for me, what it does is highlight the importance of parenting – and this scares me because Surrey is a city full of young people and young parents. If a day at the rodeo is any indication, we seriously need to up our game as parents. Our community is depending on it. Is Beau out of line with his views on parenting? Send your letters to ‘Now’ editor Beau Simpson at edit@thenownewspaper.com

Cop’s letter revealed real facts of policing crisis The Editor, Re: “As a cop, I know how short-staffed Surrey is,” the Now letters, May 15. Hats off to Surrey RCMP S/Sgt Mike Ingles for having the courage to inform us of the real facts with regards to the policing crisis in our city. He should get an award for telling it like it is. His letter’s closing sentence tells it all. “Trying to reduce crime in a community that is growing as quickly as Surrey while having a police force that has half the police officers compared to surrounding areas is a recipe for disaster and results in more crime, not less.” He also informed us that last year the RCMP provided more than 134,000 hours of unpaid overtime – nearly 65 full-time officers worth of time. The question begs to be asked, why have we not addressed this serious deficit? We, in the Port Kells area of Surrey, have seen our fair share of crime. Over the past few years, we have been afflicted with theft by addicted people, grow-ops, home invasions, etc. One of our residents actually had their house burned down after the

thieves realized they were caught on a video surveillance camera. We had more officers temporarily deployed into our neighbourhood to deal with our crisis, as was done when the Newton area had their crisis, and no doubt as they probably are doing in Tynehead now that crime has plagued their community with break-ins, vandalism and at least one home invasion. Then there are the problems in Whalley, Panorama Ridge and even South Surrey, where there was a recent armed home invasion. If you do not feel safe in your own home and neighbourhood, little else matters. Darlene Bowyer, Surrey

Rasode is proactive The Editor, Re: “Organized community is effective crimefighter,” the Now, May 8. Columnist Michael Booth’s metaphor – “a human moth” – implies one who is publicity hungry. But it can be seen in another context also as evidenced through Indian

songs. That is, one is so in love with and dedicated to one’s cause that they are ready to sacrifice themselves for it. Coun. Barinder Rasode has been very proactive in various issues, like violence against women. She has attracted a lot of media attention over the years for her work and now moreso over the split from Surrey First. Reporters like controversy. They like to put out opposing points of view. You would know that in such situations, it is reporters and journalists who seek out the opposing viewpoint, instead of the other way around. Coun. Rasode has worked hard and she is working hard especially now for transparency at city hall. Dave Bains, Surrey

Parking lot is useless The Editor, In South Surrey, at the corner of 16th Avenue and 156th Street. there are two parking lots for Peace Arch Hospital. One has been there for many years and provides

income for health care, I presume. The second lot has been there for around four years and was built at a cost of somewhere close to $1.5 million. This amount would include the cost of the land purchase and the construction of the lot which would hold probably 200 to 250 cars. The cost estimate is my own estimate and I think the actual cost was probably a good deal more. The point here is that in the years since this lot was built using taxpayer money through taxes or fundraising funds, I presume: Nobody uses it. Nobody parks in it. It provides zero income for the hospital. I can’t get into the hospital for surgery without waiting forever and I am forced to pay a private clinic in order to maintain my health due to government underfunding, yet the hospital has seen fit to spend huge amounts of money on an unused and, seemingly useless, parking lot. I wonder which intelligent bureaucrat was responsible for leading the decision about this. Roger Currie, Surrey

Felions practise their roar in South Surrey Cheer team preps for the football season in weekly rehearsals at fitness club at Morgan Crossing SEE MORE PHOTOS WITH LAYAR

SOUTH SURREY — What does it take to become a Felion? Just ask Alexandra Severyn, the cheer team’s dance co-ordinator for the last 10 years. A former Felion herself, she knows the B.C. Lions’ dancers needs more than flashy moves and bright smiles to excite a sold-out B.C. Place. “You have to have some kind of enthusiasm that we see,” said Severyn during the team’s weekly rehearsal at the Steve Nash Sports Club in Morgan Crossing. “There are hundreds of girls who audition, and you need to separate yourself from the girl next to you. “It’s kind of silly to say, but it is that sparkle.” This year’s crop of 40 dancers was picked from more than 120 auditions in March. Most are new but some are repeats, like Madison Grist of Surrey, who’s on her second year with the orange-clad team. “I wanted to continue my dance training once my degree was done,” said Grist, who was previously the president of the UBC Dance Team. “I saw an outlet with the Felions and I’ve been here ever since. “It’s been nice stepping into it with a little more confidence. We’re learning routines faster, getting them down stronger and quicker, and I think that will translate when you see the final product at the games.” Of course, the routines are new to Nicole Fabbi, one of the fresh faces of the Felions. She assisted in running the auditions this year, then tried out and made the cut.

Members of the 40-woman Felions cheer team rehearse a routine at the Steve Nash Sports Club at Morgan Crossing, South Surrey, prior to the start of the B.C. Lion’s pre-season in mid-June. (Photo: JACOB ZINN) “It can be a little overwhelming – there’s a lot of choreography,” she said. “But it’s been a lot of fun so far.” They’ve spent the last nine weeks honing their techniques in time for the Lions’ first pre-season game. The Felions pride themselves on their high-calibre dance abilities that set them apart from other cheer teams in the CFL. “Some of the other cheer teams across Canada are just that, cheer teams,” said Severyn. “They do stunting, verbal cheers – we don’t do any of that. When someone goes to a Lions game and they watch our girls, they can tell that they’re technically trained.” They perform four routines on the field at each game, plus 20 to 40 “adlibs” on the sidelines. Every week is a new routine in rehearsals and they only have a few hours to get it down before the next one. “It’s a lot of pressure, but they know that

It’s a lot of pressure, but they know that coming into it. coming into it,” said Severyn. The Felions aren’t your stereotypical ditzy cheerleaders: Grist has an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology and studies endocrinology in a behavioural neuroscience lab while also working for Lululemon, and Fabbi graduated university, went through SFU’s Professional Development Program, and is now a school teacher by day and a dance teacher in the afternoons and on weekends. “A lot of girls are university-educated or are in university or have career jobs – they’re doing this as an outlet to make new friends, to meet new people, to keep up

their physical activity,” Severyn said. “I think we all, generally, are either in school or working two or three jobs and doing Felions on top of it, and fitting in our dance training on the side,” added Grist. And that hard work pays off when the Felions enter the stadium to the roar of the crowd, about to blow the retractable roof off the building. “It’s impossible not to smile,” Grist said. “You step on the field and you can feel the energy from the fans.” Even with the Grey Cup in Vancouver this year, Grist said she’s really looking forward to the Lions facing one particular team. “I always look forward to the Roughriders game – the energy in the stadium at that game is so exciting,” she said. “I’m just looking forward to the first game,” said Fabbi, “because I’m not quite sure what to expect.”

WHITE ROCK and NORTH DELTA — With the 2014 White Rock Farmers’ Market set to kick off this weekend, those looking forward to picking up a bottle of wine with their artisan cheeses could be doing so within a month’s time. According to market manager and city councillor Helen Fathers, that’s when she predicts the provincial government will finalize the rules surrounding alcohol sales at farmers’ markets in B.C. “We’ve got everything ready to go and

In North Surrey, Surrey Urban Farmers’ Market opens June 11 at its new home, on the plaza outside the new city hall, on Wednesday afternoons from noon to 5 p.m. In White Rock, Fathers said she understands the government taking its time to roll out liquor sales at farmers’ markets. “The government just wants to make sure the marketplaces aren’t flooded with one type of vendor, so I think they’ll probably make it a percentage thing where only a certain number can be wine or alcohol vendors,” she said. And just to clarify, Fathers noted that the

Liquor sales at local farmers’ markets on horizon initiative would simply permit vendors to begin selling bottled alcohol and not allow people to walk around with a beer or wine. “We’ve had complaints from people thinking it was going to be open alcohol at the market but that’s not the case,” she explained. “People might be able to sample the alcohol but you can’t walk around with an open drink at the market.” New this year will be the market’s participation in a nutrition program hosted by the B.C. SNORING?

SLEEP APNEA?

As recommended by Dr. GiffordJones M. D. Helps to reduce the time it takes to fall a sleep. In most cases also stops snoring and gasping for air (sleep apnea) first night. Stops torturing your partner all night. Good sleep prevents being tired next day. Tired people work only at half capacity. What people truly experience: < I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, #23 NPN 80045172 Hudson, NH < Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS < For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS <It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. AT HOME Home décor

Glam returns, from runways and into living rooms We’re seeing it on the runways, on the highways, and now in all facets of home décor. Opulence is one of the hottest looks for the home in 2014. It’s presenting itself with dramatic colours, rich metallic shades, and plush velvet and suede – think shimmery antique golds highlighted by sophisticated darks and extravagant gem tones such as emerald, ruby and sapphire. “Home décor is taking its cue from the world of fashion and cars, and this is translating into lavish colours and designs for walls, furniture, floors and accessories,” said Mylène Gévry, marketing manager for SICO paint. “Glam décor has largely been removed from the spotlight of design since the onset of the recession in 2008, but the return of more embellished, glamorous looks demonstrates that consumers are slowly but surely renewing their interest in spending,” she said. “Rooms in the year ahead will exude decorated elegance, infused with multiple deep colours used creatively in straight lines.” The palette is a decadent mix of both warm and cool paint tones. The warm hues

- such as golden yellow, red and pink - are a balance of exotic, intense colour and subtle, softened neutrals. The cool tones of the palette - including blue, slate and green - are rich and saturated, contrasting well with the

warm shades. “The colours are so versatile that they aren’t limited to walls; they are also being applied to furniture, floors, trim, doors and ceilings,” Gévry said.

To achieve an opulent look, she recommended enriching bold-toned walls by painting side tables, cabinets or hutches a pop colour such as plum, jade, ruby or gold. Floors, which are often ignored in the decorating process, can add significant panache to a room when painted in deep, rich colours such as black or dark grey. Gévry suggested using premium paint that will withstand wear and tear over time. Stairs and banisters painted in glossy dark finishes complete the sophisticated look, while adding highlights through glossy white columns or wall appliqués heightens the sense of drama. Classic colours such as gold and other metallic tones are best used on an accent wall, trim or the ceiling, Gévry said, especially when the space is accessorized with crystal-like touches. Gem tones can be combined in one room using stripes or patterns, or featured as single, stand-alone colours. “You don’t need to live in a palace to create a majestic space,” Gévry said. “With the right mix of paint colours and accessories, along with a little imagination and confidence, anyone can achieve this year’s hottest look in the home.”

Brine for best barbecued meats protection shield to help keep fully cooked meats juicy. However, this is only a safeguard; overcooking is still possible, but this lessens the chance. The only other consideration you may need to give your recipe is the amount of seasoning. The meat will already be seasoned somewhat from the salt in the brine, so back off on the saltshaker. Try this technique the next time you are barbecuing chicken breasts, pork chops, pork tenderloins or pork loins. You will be impressed with the results. The salt used can be any salt – kosher, sea or other – but make sure the granules are the same size as table salt. A coarser grind will result in less salt per equal measure as more air trapped between the larger particles. It is important to mention that this is the simplest form of brine: water and salt. There are many more complex recipes available on the internet that will bring flavour and moisture, but this easy brine is a straightforward starting point. Another essential pointer to bring up is that red meats are typically not brined; marinating is better for red meats, but that’s slated for another column topic.

O

vercooking lean meats on the backyard barbecue is the most common mistake made, as people want to ensure that meat is fully cooked before serving. Although it is imperative for poultry and ground meats to be fully cooked, this does not give you the right to transform them into dry charred remains. Brining can help protect light-meat poultry and lean pork. This is a technique that involves soaking in a salt-water solution for a period of time prior to cooking. Not only does this add moisture to the centre of the meat, but also seasoning, as the salt saturated water is drawn in. A simple brining formula is one quarter cup table salt dissolved in four cups of water for pieces of poultry or lean pork. Let the meat sit in the brine for at least one hour in the refrigerator. Remove from the brine, pat them dry, and cook as you normally would. This brining process will provide a moisture

Learning to tap dance has changed my life

We’re planning improvements to five sections of the existing natural gas system that serves customers in Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam and Vancouver so we can best meet the future needs of these communities.

D

ance is a big industry in Metro Vancouver. It seems we do love to dance – any age, any style. Lucky us, we have so many options and opportunities to enjoy this genre of the performing arts. Dancers live among us. You will spot them at these dance events, all at the end of May. Or, shall I say, hey, hey – it’s May! Let’s dance! There is no secret that I tap dance – really crazy about it. Can’t say I will ever be in the “professionally good” category, but after about a decade, I can almost dazzle the non-tappers. Learning to tap dance has actually changed my life. Who knew that joining an adult-beginner tap class would lead to me participating in dance recitals and competitions? I’m actually a performer, rather than dance mom. I also bought a dance-wear store (I can have all the shoes I want) and joined West Coast Tap Dance Collective as a board member. The Collective is not a dance studio or performance company. Its mandate is to promote tap dancing. This very small organization has done quite a remarkable job of bringing public attention to tap dancing over the 12 years of its operation. Canada has a history of outstanding tap dancers. Who knew? Well, that is partly the point of the Collective: to educate. As part of the annual Tap Dance Day Celebrations, West Coast Tap Dance Collective will mediate a panel of noted tap-dance educators who will discuss various styles, issues and approaches in the education of tap dance. Really, this is exciting. Tap Talk (gotta love the name) is on Friday, May 23, 7 p.m., at the Alice Mackay Room of Vancouver Public Library. I know

this is short notice, and info was sent out to all tap teachers, but I thought it would be interesting to attend as a non-teacher. Maybe it’s a chance to learn how to learn – always a challenge. Panelists include Jim Hibbard, Paula Skimin, Jennifer Bishop and Lisa LaTouche. Live performances and demonstrations will be included, followed by an open discussion period. Admission is free. That is a good deal. Bring your tap shoes. And don’t forget, tickets are still available for All That Tap, this year’s International Tap Day show. Yep, this is the day that tap dancing is celebrated around the world. All That Tap, is this Saturday, May 24 at Massey Theatre in New Westminster, starting at 7:30 p.m. Local talent, along with invited guest performers from across Canada and the U.S., are showcased. The tribute this year is to legendary local tap teacher and mentor Peggy Peat. Tickets are available at the Massey ticket centre (604-521-5050) and, locally, at DanceCraft. For the end of May, we can return to the beautiful Surrey Arts Centre. In its third season, Coastal City Ballet presents a new commission of ballet’s great comedy, Coppelia. Based upon two stories by E.T.A. Hoffman, and set to Leo Delibes’ irresistibly melodic score, this comedic full-length ballet is choreographed by Irene Schneider, see › page 29

former artistic director of Germany’s Magedeburg Ballet. This is a delightful story, and a favourite classical ballet. It runs on May 31 at the arts centre’s main stage, 7:30 p.m. start. Tickets at 604-501-5566. Coastal City Ballet actively seeks talented ballet dancers with strong classical training for its company. This preprofessional ballet company is located in Vancouver and is yet another opportunity for serious ballet dancers to stay at home and train for a career in ballet. The company will hold its annual auditions for the 2014-2015 season on Sunday, June 8. Pre-registration is required; check out Coastalcityballet. com for more details. You will need a full-length ballet photo and a resumé. Diskordance is a Surreybased contemporary dance company. Its next presentation is Saturday, May 31 at the studio theatre

Diskordanse’s ARIA is staged May 31 at Surrey Arts Centre. at Surrey Arts Centre. Look at that, you can start off a dance day with edgy contemporary and finalize it with classical ballet, all at the same place. ARIA, diskordance’s presentation, combines fire with air in a tale of the elements. Tickets at the box office, 604-5015566. That brings us to the end of May – the dance-a-ganza.

After the month-long Surrey Festival of Dance at the arts centre, and several other dance competitions and now two full-length dance presentations, you’d think the arts centre would be danced out by now. Uh-uh. June is just full of dance recitals. Told ya. Dance is a big industry. There are dancers among us.

ARTS & LIFE BC Junior Talent Search finals

Power, vocal gymnastics, hugs at talent contest SEE VIDEOS OF WINNERS AND MORE PHOTOS WITH LAYAR Gord Goble

Now contributor goble@shaw.ca

SURREY — Those taking in the two championship performances Monday afternoon during the BC Junior Talent Search Finals could be forgiven for believing – truly believing – they were in the presence of seasoned pros at the top of their games. First, Surrey’s Arianna Almeida, guitar in hand and calling upon all of her 11 years on the planet, won the preteen category by rampaging through “House of the Rising Sun” – a version so gritty, so downright aggressive, it would have done Eric Burdon proud. Then, Jada McKenzie-Moore, 13, of Vancouver, showed what a voice capable of about a hundred octaves can do in a soaring, at times ethereal version of “Titanium” to walk away with the teen contest crown.

It’s not exaggeration to say both girls would have turned chairs on TV’s The Voice. For Arianna, music is, apparently, everything. “It is my passion,” said the enthusiastic Grade 5 student at Pacific Academy. She began singing at the age of five, spurred on by mom Evelyn and dad Valentino, the latter a veteran rock musician. But singing and playing guitar is just the tip of the iceberg: Arianna also plays sax, flute, violin and recorder. She lists among her influences such diverse artists as Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Heart, and Evanescence, and sees a future, perhaps a decade from now when she’ll be all of 21, as a Arianna Almeida solo singer-songwriter. And why “House of the Rising Sun?” “I wanted to sing a song that I could put my full effort into. I wanted to show my soul.” Astonishingly, comparative old-timer Jada didn’t know which song she’d sing until the day before the competition, held at Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair.

Jada McKenzie-Moore, 13, sings the David Guetta song “Titanium” to win the teen category title during Monday’s BC Junior Talent Search finals, at Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair. (Photo: GORD GOBLE) “We watched American Idol and saw a contestant sing ‘Titanium,’” said Jada, a Grade 8 student at Eric Hamber Secondary. “I thought how it applied to Trinity (Jada’s

friend and a bullying victim at school), so it seemed perfect.” One problem: she’d never even sung the song. That left just a single day for prep, memorization and rehearsal. Adding to the commotion, mom Jennifer had to source a backing track that offered enough space for her daughter’s secret weapon – a Mariah Carey-like octave capability and extended “whistle notes.” This was not Jada’s first shot in front of a crowd – not by a long shot. Indeed, the young chanteuse has appeared in musicals and competitions since she began singing in earnest at age eight, and is currently the official national anthem singer at Vancouver Stealth lacrosse games. So when mom finally did find the elusive backing track, her daughter merely reached into her bag of experience and went to work. The result was glorious. When she left the stage, an overcome Trinity ran toward her. The two embraced as the crowd cheered. And this year’s Junior Talent Search had its fitting climax. Last month, the ninth talent contest kicked off with two rounds of open auditions at Central City Shopping Centre, followed by semi-finals there last Thursday.

THE

today’sdrive 20 Honda 14 Odyssey

NEWSPAPER.COM

Your journey starts here.

It’s a great vehicle for a family odyssey BY BRENDAN McALEER

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com

of utilitarian anonymity, even with the extra chrome of the Touring edition – this isn’t a show-off car.

Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer

Hard to think it, but this vehicle is actually a member of an endangered breed. Just like the colossal station wagons of yore, the humble minivan is now somewhat under threat, outcompeted by legions of crossovers.

provides enough thrust to get out of the way or make a tricky merge, but the overall driving experience is far more relaxed. Coming off the line almost feels like setting sail, with the Odyssey gliding up to speed.

Environment:

Inside, of course, is where the action is. With a simply tremendous amount of seating and tonnes of cargo room, the Odyssey has space to spare. Anyone also looking at a three-row crossover should just try sitting in the third row of this van to see how much more room a minivan can have.

Part of the deal is the whole “mom” vibe that a van projects. It’s a device for hauling around the soccer team, and as such, it doesn’t get a lot of respect.

It’s a different sort of driving. On a winding country road, the concern is not so much about gripping the curves with maximum gs, as it is not making anyone carsick. To that end, body roll is relatively controlled in the Odyssey, and it’s easy to set up a smooth rhythm, not slowpokin’, not hustlin’, but a just-right cruising speed. It’s a bit like being the captain of a comfortable cruise-liner.

Stacking it up against the major competitors, the Odyssey doesn’t have the second-row flexibility of the Dodge Caravan, with its stow and go seating, and the Sienna’s larger rear seats are better suited to longer-legged passengers. The Odyssey provides plenty of comfort, especially for little kids, but removing the second row of seats for the annual garage clear out is a bit of a pain. Maybe we’ll clean the place out next year.

Well that’s a darn shame. Minivans are some of the nicest-riding, most feature-packed machines on the road, and they’re absolutely the ideal road trip companion. Load it up with pretty much anything your can think of – the kitchen sink? Why not? – and hit the open highway. A perennial favourite, the Honda Odyssey has always been a nice safe choice for a growing family that doesn’t subscribe to the idea that their family hauler need pretend to be a rugged SUV. Refreshed for 2014, it now includes a world-first feature: a built-in onboard vacuum cleaner.

On the highway, the lack of radar-guided cruise-control is missed, and an overactive lane-departure-warning system is a bit annoying (you can turn it off). Other than that, this is what the Odyssey seems born to do: middle-lane cruising, eating up the miles.

However, with three-zone climate control and full leather seating, the Odyssey is easy-to-clean comfort for up to eight. The rear seats flip away to form an entirely flat loading area, or leave them up and load up the deep trunk.

It might be good at the short-run school/soccer/musicclass excursions, but it’s also an ideal vehicle for longdistance touring. You might not get your thrills behind the wheel, but everybody can share in the great view out the windows.

Up front, the driver and passenger now have a cleaner interface system to deal with, with a new touchscreen handling most of audio functions. Fit and finish are very good, although the use of plastics is not quite up to the near-luxury feel you’re starting to get with some modern crossovers. It would also be nice to see a practical innovation here like the Highlander’s mid-level dashboard shelf.

I guess you could say that particular part of this van really sucks. So how’s the rest of it?

Design:

There’s not much you can do, styling-wise, with what’s essentially a box on wheels, but to their credit, Honda’s at least made an attempt. Up front, there’s a new grille, hood and fenders.

Features:

At the Touring-level, the Odyssey is crammed with everything from Satellite Navigation to 12-speaker audio, to a push-button smart key, to the aforementioned touchscreen interface system. Honda calls this last HondaLink, and it’s straightforward to use. There’s also a gargantuan 16.2”-wide screen out back to pacify rear passengers.

I’d also like to see far more USB power outlets, not just the one used for connecting to an iPod, but several more out back to charge mobile devices for the kids.

Thankfully, in an industry strangely obsessed with making their next generation of cars more aggressive, the Odyssey is still a friendly-faced machine, and quite reserved. From the side, the dominant feature is the chrome-surrounded greenhouse that looks like a fat lightning bolt, if we’re being charitable, or like the designer had hiccups, if we’re not.

Performance:

Safety ratings for the Odyssey are excellent – the IIHS has awarded it the highest possible rating. There’s a blind-spot monitoring system, and a multiple-angle rearview camera to make parking easier.

If you floor it, the six-speed auto downshifts and the V6

Fuel economy is quite good, considering the sheer weight of the van, thanks in part to cylinder-deactivation when cruising. Official ratings are 10.9L/100kms in the city and 7.1L/100kms on the highway. Especially when loaded up with kids, expect 10-20% worse than that in city conditions, but it is possible to dip into the 7s on the highway.

With a six-speed automatic transmission and a 248hp 3.5L V6 standard on all Odysseys, Honda’s minivan is about as fast as it needs to be. Interestingly, they’ve programmed the throttle to be very progressive, which makes it easy to get off the line without spilling sippy cups and snapping little necks.

Touring-class Odysseys get 18” alloy wheels in a machinedlook finish that seem at balance with the immense amount of sheet metal here. The overall appeal of the car is a sort

WHITE ROCK — With the 2014 White Rock Farmers’ Market set to kick off this weekend, those looking forward to picking up a bottle of wine with their artisan cheeses could be doing so within a month’s time. According to market manager and city councillor Helen Fathers, that’s when she predicts the provincial government will finalize the rules surrounding alcohol sales at farmers’ markets in B.C. “We’ve got everything ready to go and we’re just waiting for the government to come out with it,” said Fathers. “As soon

JONKER NISSAN 19505 Langley By-Pass Surrey, BC Tel: (604) 534-7957 as we have that, which I think will be by mid-June, we’ll see wine, beer and maybe distilleries at the market.” Fathers said she understands the government taking its time to roll out the new initiative. “The government just wants to make sure the marketplaces aren’t flooded with one type of vendor, so I think they’ll probably make it a percentage thing where only a certain number can be wine or alcohol vendors,” she said. And just to clarify, Fathers noted that the initiative would simply permit vendors to begin selling bottled alcohol and not allow people to walk around with a beer or wine. “We’ve had complaints from people

thinking it was going to be open alcohol at the market but that’s not the case,” she explained. “People might be able to sample the alcohol but you can’t walk around with an open drink at the market.” In the meantime, the market will kick off its 2014 season this Sunday (May 25), offering various artisan goods, foods and, of course, fresh produce. New to this year will be the market’s participation in a nutrition program hosted by the B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets that will help lower-income families purchase fresh groceries. “So we’ve hooked up with Sources and through them, we’ll be giving 40 families and 20 seniors food and nutrition coupons each

White Rock

Farmers’ market could see liquor sales within a month week,” explained Fathers. “So with those they can come to the market and redeem them for fruits and veggies, cheeses and meats.” And just like years past, Fathers said the market is still in the fortunate position where they’ve had more vendors apply than the market can actually accommodate. “So we’ve reached a stage where I could probably run another market somewhere else for those who we simply don’t have room for at this market,” she said. “So maybe that’s something we might talk about in the future, having a pocket market somewhere else.” White Rock Farmers’ Market kicks off on Sunday, May 25 at Miramar Plaza at 15154 Russell Ave. The market will run every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Oct. 12.

You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. Try your local health food stores first.
