Bog battle heats up

Here, Cloverdale – hold my beer! Aaron Pritchett tries to get a bit closer from the stage to the crowd Saturday night. Nearly 4,000 turned out to the Cloverdale Amphitheatre to see Pritchett, Dallas Smith and a bevy of other country stars perform – all the while raising about $183,000 for charity. Spat leads to shot being fired at cab Police are hunting for a gunman who took a shot at a taxi in Whalley late Saturday night. “Our investigators have found a connection between the subject of interest and passengers in the cab,” Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said. The attack was apparently linked to a spat involving some of the cab’s passengers earlier that evening. “We have good leads,” Paquet said Monday. “We’re actively looking for this person right now.” Two men and two women, all in their early 20s, were riding in the cab on 102A Avenue near University Boulevard shortly before 11 p.m. when someone pulled up alongside the cab and fired a single shot. There were five people inside, including the driver. Nobody was hit. The bullet passed through the driver’s side rear window and exited through the passenger rear window. “It’s very fortunate nobody was seriously injured,” Paquet said. One of the passengers sustained minor cuts from the burst glass. The cab driver hit his brakes and the shooter’s car sped off. His passengers bailed out and ran away as he called 911, but police subsequently identified the four and spoke with them. Tom Zytaruk

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson says recent comments made by Burns Bog Conservation Society president Eliza Olson on the public hearing process are “inaccurate.” “She’s got it all mixed up,” said Jackson. “The Burns Bog Conservation Society should make sure they know what the process is and what’s happening before they make a lot of these statements. They are making accusations against Delta unfounded.” Olson told the Now last week that Delta “failed to follow due process” and skipped holding a public hearing before meeting with Metro Vancouver. Last Friday, Delta council met with Metro Vancouver’s board of directors to present a report on redesignating an 89-acre property at Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue in North Delta from “conservation and recreation” to “general urban.” The property is owned by MK Delta Lands Group, which has an application before council to develop a mixed-use village in the area, but the society is against it because it is too close to the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area. see MAYOR › page 4
