WINDLESHAM WIN THE WALLIS TROPHY & WEST BYFLEET WIN THE PLATE

The last team final of the year was played at Cuddington GC and even the rain couldn’t dampen the fantastic views of the London Skyline or the enthusiasm of the players, caddies and supporters.

Playing the Wallis trophy were Coombe Wood (holders) v Windlesham and the Wallis Plate, Burhill v West Byfleet. Each club was represented by 5 players for singles handicap match play. This year 57 clubs entered the competition which is for players with handicap Indexes 21 to 36.

A drizzle hung over Cuddington but cleared up for a dry start, then a torrential downpour mid matches meant wet gear was on and umbrellas went up. An hour later it was lovely sunshine, wet gear off again and short sleeves on show! England in autumn!

In the Trophy match the result stood at 2-2 in the clubhouse, players, supporters and captains began to gather around the closing hole to see the last match home, on the 18th green Windlesham triumphed and took the spoils to the delight of team Captain Frédérique Hull. Congratulation should also go to Coombe Wood on a great run to try to defend their title.

As the Windlesham ladies celebrated with champagne, the Plate matches also stood at 2-2, with teams waiting on their anchor players to decide the winner. In the end it was West Byfleet who prevailed, and their team Captain Julia Webb, received the Wallis Plate in its inaugural year.
