in Victoria on the weekend, getting fitted for the tuxedo he plans to wear to his Aug. 28 wedding. His girlfriend, Lisa Greenwood, was going to have the final alterations made to her wedding dress. Instead Fonyo, a 45-year-old Surrey resident, spent the weekend locked up at the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre, waiting for a bail hearing. Fonyo was arrested last week and charged with one count of unauthorized use of a credit card. On Monday, the one-legged man who became famous for Steve Fonyo running across Canada learned he would have to wait at least another day before he can go free. The lawyer who usually represents Fonyo was away on holiday and the fill-in lawyer was tied up in a trial, so the bail hearing was postponed till Tuesday (after The Leader’s press deadline. Check www.surreyleader. com for updates). A dismayed Fonyo asked if the in-court public defender could help him out, but he was told he should See BUSINESSES / Page 3

Bigger than Green River killer, Pickton boasted Videos of undercover conversation, police interrogation released by Jeff Nagel A BOASTFUL Robert “Willie” Pickton can be

heard bragging about how he killed more women than Washington State’s Green River killer. On Friday, a recording was released of the jail cell conversation between an undercover police officer posing as a cellmate and the convicted serial killer just after his 2002 arrest. Although the entire video was played for the

jury during the trial and Pickton’s statements were reported at that time, the transcript released Friday reveals more details. In the recording, Pickton tells the cell plant “I was gonna do one more, make it an even 50... That’s why, that’s why I was sloppy about it. I wanted one more, make, make the big five O.” He then refers to Gary Ridgway, who just three months earlier in late 2001 had been arrested for a string of murders in Washington State. Ridgway ultimately pleaded guilty to 48

killings and provided information to help find remains in a deal that spared him the death penalty, which he would still face if convicted of more deaths. Pickton tells the undercover officer he was “bigger than the ones in the States” and “bigger than the Green River.” The officer agreed. “His record were about 42,” Pickton said.

Sereena, Heather, Yvonne Three Surrey women linked to Pickton case Black Press SEREENA ABOTSWAY was an

abused four-year-old prone to fits of temper and acting out when she came to live with foster parents Anna and Bert Draayers in Surrey. Abotsway once started a fire in the newly built Cloverdale Catholic church. “Every candle that was to be found in the church and sacristy, she put them all on,” Anna Draayers remembered. The Draayers repeatedly tried to get counselling for Abotsway, but to no avail. “We pleaded with the ministry to help and they did just the opposite, they put her in a group home. There was no holding her,” Draayers said. “She was lost.” Despite all of Abotsway’s problems, the Draayers said she could be warm and loving. She regularly phoned home after she moved out. “If she didn’t have a quarter she would phone us collect and we would always accept,” her foster mom remembered. The calls continued until just before Abotsway’s 30th birthday on Aug. 20, 2001. In February of 2002, Pickton was charged with Abotsway’s murder. Abotsway and another Surrey woman, Heather Gabrielle Chinnock, were among the 26 victims Pickton was formally accused of killing. Chinnock, said to be a regular visitor to Pickton’s farm, disappeared after an argument with her boyfriend, who told police Chinnock stormed out of their Surrey residence without taking any clothes or other personal possessions. The Chinnock murder is among the 20 charges that have been stayed. Another missing Surrey woman, Yvonne Marie Boen, was linked to the Pickton pig farm after forensic experts found her DNA there, but Pickton was not charged. Boen went missing in March of 2001. newsroom@surreyleader.com

BLACK PRESS FILE PHOTO

Workers comb the grounds of Robert Pickton’s Port Coquitlam pig farm as part of a massive search for evidence.

‘Cunning’ Pickton acted alone, author believes Police confused by bodies now tied to second serial killer by Jeff Nagel ROBERT “WILLIE” PICKTON was neither stupid nor incapable of singlehandedly murdering dozens of missing women. That’s one of the conclusions veteran Canadian journalist and author Stevie Cameron drew after witnessing the serial killer’s lengthy trial and videotaped statements to police. “I believe he acted alone,” Cameron said in a wideranging interview with Black Press. “He said he killed 49 women – I believe him,” she said, Stevie Cameron referring to his claims to an undercover police officer in jail. Cameron, author of the forthcoming book On The Farm, rejects defence theories that other Pickton associates or even the Hells Angels were responsible and the Port Coquitlam pig farmer was simply stuck with disposal duty. Women he knew and paid helped lure desperate drugaddicted prostitutes to his farm, she said, but there was never any evidence anyone else killed any of the women. “I think he’s a classic psychopath,” Cameron said. “He enjoyed killing these women. He planned it. He kept mementos, souvenirs. He hid them between walls, all over his area of the farm. “He had absolutely no conscience about it. He could

get away with it. He was quite aware that he had better ways to dispose of the bodies than the average person.” She said the evidence shows Pickton was capable of running his own business and was good with numbers. “He’s cunning,” she said. “He’s not a moron.” Cameron does not blame police for letting Pickton slip away after a bloody knife fight in 1997 when one would-be victim escaped. It seemed like an isolated altercation, she said, noting the missing women’s task force had not yet been set up. For some time, she said, police had no good reason to go onto the farm and one request for a search warrant was rejected. r From 1999 on, the focus shifted back to Pickton, but investigators had no excuse to conduct a search until 2002, when t he h was charged with weapons offences, triggering the massive search of the property. s Despite graphic and horrific evidence, Cameron says the only o part of the trial that “made my stomach lurch” was watching i Pickton’s crack defence team relentlessly cross-examine Crown witnesses, particularly one who saw another woman’s C body hanging in the slaughterhouse. b See VICTIMS / Page 7

wait for his own lawyer to handle the matter. Delta Police allege Fonyo used a bogus card to buy gas from a North Delta gas station on three occasions. The woman Fonyo plans to marry had come to Surrey court hoping that bail would be granted and confident Fonyo would be able to explain himself. “There’s two sides to every story,” Greenwood said. She was disappointed by the delay, but remained hopeful Fonyo would be released

in time for the wedding on the Vancouver Island beach that bears his name. “The wedding is going as planned,” Greenwood insisted. “As long as we get him out.” A group of Vancouver Island businesses had offered to cater the wedding, then backed out after learning Greenwood had been jailed for shoplifting. Greenwood said the conviction was a souvenir of a past bad relationship and she has “dealt with it” by serving her sentence. A retired florist from Saanich, Norma Fitzsimmons, has since stepped in to fill the

gap with donations from other businesses. Greenwood said Fitzsimmons appears willing to continue with the wedding arrangements despite the news. The couple just moved into a new home in Surrey only to find the owner of the property wasn’t willing to rent because the planned sale of the house had fallen through. “I’m homeless” Greenwood said. “I’m staying with friends.” Fonyo, who lost a leg to cancer, raised $13 million for cancer research in 1985 when he ran across Canada.

New Westminster Law Courts. Some days, I had a front row seat to what some had darkly dubbed the Trial of the Century. A wall of glass separated the public gallery from the court, but the defendant sat, back turned, in a box directly ahead of that first row. It was close enough to discern the colour of Pickton’s eyes (green) and notice he never seemed to fidget or so much as scratch an itch during the 11 long months of the trial, never mind make eye contact with anyone in the public gallery. Slight, balding and jail-house soft, he had a nondescript face and greasy, stringy hair that always looked soaking wet. He looked more like a goblin than Canada’s worst accused serial killer. Still, I preferred the second row. What’s it like to sit a few inches away from a serial killer? Truth is, it’s a lot more impressive to watch the father of one of his victims summon the courage to face down his daughter’s killer – moments after telling the judge that on hot dog day at school, his granddaughter was asked what it’s like to eat her mother. I’d rather tell you about the sisters who closed their eyes and clasped each others’ hands in the anxious seconds before the judge delivered the

maximum penalty – their joyous cries of relief ringing through the room. I contemplate the dedication of another relative – though his loved one wasn’t one of the six counts being dealt with – who observed every hour of the marathon trial, faithfully showing up each day for nearly a year. Now that the remaining 20 charges against Pickton have been stayed, I wonder if he’ll ever get the answers he’s been waiting to hear? Of course, not all of the victims came from loving homes – quite the opposite. Abusive childhoods, poverty, fierce drug addictions, and even mental illness run as common threads knitting the backgrounds of Vancouver’s missing women together, and it’s what put them in harm’s way. “For them to have been murdered in the circumstances of this case makes their already tragic lives more tragic,” the trial’s lead prosecutor, Michael Petrie, said. Now that the public can finally hear what the jury never knew when deciding Pickton’s fate – much of it shocking – I’m hearing the same sorts of comments I heard back when I was covering the trial. “Trying to avoid Pickton revelations,” karen_cook Tweeted last Friday. “Already horrify-

ing and tragic enough and on my list of things I don’t need to know.” “I skipped the trial, and I certainly skipped the tapes. I can hardly bear to look at the picture,” a writer commented on a news site.

“But to say it’s simply too gruesome is to miss the point...” Jennifer Lang The evidence presented at the trial was disturbing and horrific. Investigators found a gun with a sex-toy with DNA from one of Pickton’s victims fitted over top, night vision goggles, handcuffs, bloodstains and heads in buckets – details that sent the young daughter of a victim sobbing from the courtroom. There were more terrible revelations to follow. The Pickton farm was essentially a death camp for drug addicts in the heart of suburbia, surrounded by homes

whose property values never faltered. The compulsion to look away from Pickton’s crimes is understandable – even my friends didn’t ask me about the trial. But to say it’s simply too gruesome is to miss the point, which is that terrible things happened to dozens of women – poor, drugaddicted women from abusive childhoods and circumstances. Women society had unabashedly written off. To look away is to remain ignorant of the fact the women were mothers, daughters and sisters who were, and still are, very much missed. “All we have are bone fragments,” lamented one relative speaking at Pickton’s sentencing. Some of the families don’t even have that. Thanks to the humanity shown by the loved ones of the victims, covering the trial wasn’t an experience devoid of all hope. During this final chapter, we need to examine what took place so we, as a community, can ensure it doesn’t happen again. Coming to terms with the horrible evidence from Pickton’s trial is an important step in the right direction. For the victims, it’s the least that we can do. Jennifer Lang is the editor of The Cloverdale Reporter. In 2007, as a reporter, Lang covered the Pickton Trial for Black Press.

Calls for Pickton inquiry

C O M M U N I T Y B E A U T I F I C AT I O N

Family members want police handling of case examined by Jeff Nagel

FAMILY MEMBERS of missing women have renewed their calls for a public inquiry into the police handling of the Pickton case. Vancouver Police issued a new apology last week for not catching Pickton sooner. “I’ve always thought there should be an inquiry,” said Ernie Crey, whose sister Dawn disappeared in 2000 and was on a list

of additional missing women Pickton is suspected of killing. “It shouldn’t be a difficult decision for them to make.” B.C. Attorney General Mike de Jong has not yet said if an inquiry will be ordered but he has not ruled one out. The VPD had initially rejected suggestions a serial killer was responsible. Crey said he hopes that any similar predator in the future

can be caught faster if lessons are learned. Crey said he also hopes Pickton ends the torment for families and admits to the murders of additional missing women. “I don’t see why he wouldn’t – man up to it,” he said. “That would really help a lot of the families who have a loved one whose face appears on the VPD poster of missing women.”

“It looks like you got the record,” the officer said. “That’s the biggest record there is,” Pickton said later. He laughs on the tape about “letting everything die for a while... then do, another 25 new ones.” The cell plant told Pickton he always thought the best way to

dispose of bodies was to dump them in the ocean. “There ain’t much left,” the officer told the Port Coquitlam pig farmer. “I did better than that,” Pickton replied. “A rendering plant.” “Only, ah, I was kinda sloppy at the end, too, getting too sloppy.” Police had just begun an intensive search of his property. “Four I was sloppy

killed and one person seriously injured when a late-model BMW slammed into the back of a flatbed truck in a road construction zone early Friday morning on Highway 1 in Surrey. It happened around 3:30 a.m. near 192 Street. A police spokesman said the BMW was driving well over the posted speed limit early Friday morning when it crashed. The driver of the vehicle and two passengers, all men in their 40s, died instantly. A fourth man was transported to Surrey Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The victims have been identified as Jong Seob Kim, Gi Pyo Hong and Yongkwan Kim, all Langley residents. Investigators believe that alcohol and failure to wear seatbelts were factors. The car was driving through an active construction zone with a lowered speed limit of 80 km/h around 3:30 a.m. when it entered a left-hand lane that was shut down to regular

Robert Pickton listens to proceedings during his lengthy mass murder trial. abuse. Some of them were from aboriginal communities, where the damage of residential school abuse continues to echo. A typical girl would fall in with a bad boyfriend who would lead her to drugs. She’d gravitate to the Downtown

Eastside to find a new boyfriend to keep her on drugs, and then would work as a prostitute to keep them supplied. “It’s like some kind of hideous slave trade.” They were failed by a system that offered inadequate detox

“They were just crucified by the defence. Every single thing they’d done in their lives that was illegal or embarrassing was dragged up. They were hammered again and again and again. But they stuck to their story.” Pickton maintained his innocence last week in a phone interview from prison with CTV. Cameron believes new killers could again target the desperate and the vulnerable, noting the Downtown Eastside remains a magnet for addicts, often coming from all over B.C. “There are still women disappearing,” she said. Cameron backs the idea of a public inquiry to deliver a better sense of justice for the families and push for reforms. The tragedy for each victim began with their terrible lives before Pickton took them, she said. Many had been in two or more foster homes in their youth, and many suffered sexual

facilities, she said. “Often the treatment was four nights at the Sally Ann and you’re out on the street and best of luck.” Too often, she’s heard people say the women made their own poor choices. “They were brave. They earned their livings. They loved their kids. They kept in touch with them. They kept in touch with their mothers, their sisters. They phoned their kids on their birthdays. They all wanted out of the life.” The family members and friends lined up to observe every day of the trial were proof the women were loved and missed. “They were not disposable people.”

ROBERT PICKTON

Never again

RAESIDE

W

ith long-standing publication bans now lifted on evidence from the Robert William Pickton trial, the horror of his crimes is once again front and centre. So are society’s shortcomings. In light of new details released in recent days, family members of the missing women have renewed their calls for a public inquiry into the police handling of the case. Vancouver Police, the RCMP and the City of Vancouver support the notion, which B.C.’s attorney general is considering. Last week, VPD issued an apology for not catching Pickton sooner. But any shortcomings in this case go beyond what the cops did or did not do. The women Pickton murdered were victimized long before they met their violent ends on a Port Coquitlam pig farm. Most came from chaotic family backgrounds and were shuttled through numerous foster homes during childhood. Their needs for counselling and other professional intervention were ignored, and they easily fell prey to drug dealers and pimps. Despite being highly visible – strolling the streets for “dates” to support their addictions or becoming frequent flyers at the local lock-up as their risky lifestyles repeatedly roused trouble – the women were ignored. When they went missing, nobody – save for their friends and loved ones – cared. The Pickton saga shined a harsh light on the lives of the women of the Downtown Eastside, the desperation of their existence almost as disturbing as the details of their deaths. While it’s too late for Pickton’s victims, the challenges for another generation of vulnerable women continue in the city’s core. Poverty, substance abuse and mental illness still wreak havoc, while remedies such as affordable housing and adequate health care are lacking. When it came to recognizing the plight of a vulnerable demographic, it took a serial killer to command our collective attention. Let’s not lose the focus once the Pickton stories fade away.

declared guilty under our legal system? I got my answer and returned to my wife and children at camp, feeling neither elated nor saddened by the judgment, just hopeful that justice had been served. The case is not the only one during my time as a newspaper editor that resonates, though it certainly is a standout in a long list of heartbreaking ones. In fact, so many of the news items and feature stories that cross my desk truly hit home emotionally – both positively and negatively – for me and my staff. We routinely write about issues of triumph, of treachery, and, yes, too often of heartache. And while I’m aware such emotions can take their toll on the psyches of those who allow themselves compassion, I’m proud we still care as much as we do – convinced, as I am, that not all journalists strive to empathize with their subjects. I sometimes wonder if our readers realize just how much we do “feel” when we report. Whether it’s the athlete agonizing over poten-

he text message arrived last week not long after it had been sent, its wording succinct: “Guilty x 4.” I had been standing with arm outstretched on a rock on the edge of Alouette Lake – on the only patch where regulars said cellphone service would be reliable – when the verdict came down while I was on a family camping trip. Ladner driver Carol Berner had been convicted on all counts in the May 2008 death of four-year-old Alexa Middelaer. I can’t explain why I had asked my coworkers at the Peace Arch News to text me with the trial’s verdict during my week off. My personal investment in the outcome was limited. I’d never knowingly crossed paths with Berner, never met her young victim and never spoke to Alexa’s parents, Laurel and Michael Middelaer, who’d spent the last two years of their lives campaigning against impaired driving. Yet, as someone who had followed the case as part of my job, I felt I needed to know. Would Berner – whose lawyer had acknowledged outside court that she was “extremely sorrowful” her car struck Alexa and others, but that she was not criminally responsible – be

tial defeat, the politician struggling to undo the damage caused by personal shortcomings or opposition chicanery, or – as in the Berner/ Middelaer decision – individuals struggling with tragedy that has flooded their lives without warning, even though we make great effort to instill our work with objectivity, we don’t report the news with unfeeling abandon. When deciding how to present such stories with headlines, photos and placement, I often try to put myself in the subjects’ places, wondering how I would have acted in similar circumstances. Would I have come to the same conclusion, had I sat in Judge Peder Gulbransen’s chair? Would I have prosecuted or defended Berner the same way, had I been one of the lawyers? A more unsettling hypothetical question is how I would have handled myself had I been the driver that caused the death of a young child.

Lance Peverly

Even disregarding the impaired-driving elements for which Berner was convicted, how would I have reacted had I been in the car that took a life, regardless of who or what was at fault? Would I accept legal advice and merely communicate that I am “sorrowful” for my involvement, or would I have thrown myself on the mercy of the court and public opinion and attempted – regardless of possible outcomes – to make some sort of reparation. Most of us are fortunate and will never know. The other two main personalities in this case are, of course, the Middelaer parents themselves. The question to be asked, if I were in their shoes, is whether I would commit to the same extraordinary effort they have invested in their campaign against impaired driving since their child’s death. But it’s a question I have yet to ask myself. I won’t let my mind go there. I can’t. Lance Peverley is editor of the Peace Arch News.

Compost The benefits of pine beetle epidemics site a step backwards RE: “PINE BEETLE impact overstated,” Bell says.

DOES SURREY DESERVE a reputation for allowing industry to locate just about anywhere, regardless of neighbourhoods? I agree with the strong objections held by Hazelmere residents to the proposed composting facility in their vicinity. A few years ago, when the Spade Holdings Ltd. composting facility, located within the ALR near the Nicomekl River, was in full operation, local Cloverdale residents were appalled by the company’s lack of consultation with area residents. Our neighbourhood became flooded with foul odours, no matter which way the wind was blowing. In summer, the flies were everywhere and crows blackened the skies. At any time of year, area residents were instructed by GVRD to phone its hotline in an attempt to monitor whenever, and perhaps why, the stench was particularly overwhelming. Was the recent commercial composting operation in Cloverdale an industrial or an agricultural activity? By whatever label, the effect of such activity degraded our community. Last year, I became alarmed by a newspaper article about the Metro Vancouver Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) in which it indicated that Metro Vancouver was considering to site a residential drop-off facility (RDO) for household waste, recyclables and compostibles in Surrey in either Cloverdale or South Surrey. When I phoned Rob Costanzo, deputy manager of operations at Surrey’s engineering department, I was assured that wherever this facility is to be situated it will need to be established on High Impact Industrial zoned lands, and not near a residential zoned area. Definitely, the SWMP’s greater emphasis upon recycling/compost and reuse rather than landfill waste can be seen as progressive. However, it is a big step backward when we do not protect our environment and place in peril our water resources and fisheries. At the end of the day, we simply cannot afford to risk our agricultural lands under the guise of “sustainability” and “waste diversion needs.” Lorelei Quiding Surrey

I am pleased B.C. Minister of Forests Pat Bell is saying the beetle impact on our forests has been overstated. I agree, but my reasons may be different. The mountain pine beetle is a natural part of our lodgepole pine forests, no different than the wind and the rain. Lodgepole pine is a relatively short-lived tree species, and is typically reestablished naturally following fire, wind storms, beetle epidemics, and logging. Large mountain pine beetle epidemics re-occur about every 40 years. In B.C., epidemics reoccurred in the 1890s, 1930s, 1980s and recently. When we see all those red and dying pine trees we typically overreact. Ground observation

is always needed to verify what is happening because human eyes are more sensitive to the red part of the light spectrum, than the green. In mixed species forests (about 75 per cent of the pine forests), the mountain pine beetle dra-

matically increases the rate of forest succession, and growth of remaining live trees. This is a very good thing for maintaining midterm timber supply, in (say) 15 to 50 years. The key to reducing vulnerability of lodgepole pine and increasing its resilience to mountain pine beetles is to maintain diversity in tree species, size, age, and condition, through skilled partial cutting. Large-scale clear-cutting of mixedspecies stands, and replacement with uniform young pine, is counterproductive. I would like to see a post-beetle epidemic assessment keeping these forest policy, science and management principles in mind.

Incinerator must go on the Island I SUPPORT the incinerator plan

A letter writer says tax dollars are being wasted cleaning up illegal dumping, such as this abandoned hot tub on Colebrook Road.

Tax dollars are being wasted WHILE OUT for my daily walk I came upon some-

one’s lost hot tub in an area of Colebrook Road commonly used for the illegal dumping of garbage. It’s important that we find the owner of this valuable hot tub and I’ve included a photo. If someone recognized this item, please contact the City of Surrey bylaw department at 604-5914370 because I’m fed up seeing my tax dollars being

wasted cleaning up after people who seem to think that every quiet street in this city is a dump site. Incidentally, there’s a couch and crib recently deposited in a ditch on Old McLellan Road and a truckload of roofing material in a nearby cul-de-sac. Let’s get together and clean up this city. G. Park, Surrey

with one caveat. One has to be pragmatic. The choices are not black and white. Zero waste is a good target to strive for. The stated target of 80 per cent waste reduction by 2020 is said to be very ambitious. A lot of effort by business, government and continuing education of the public will be needed. This effort should continue even with the incinerator plan. Something needs to be done soon about reducing packaging waste. The caveat for the incinerator is that it must not be located in Metro Vancouver. My only and over-riding concern is for our neighbours in the Fraser Valley. They vehemently fought off a large gas burning plant just across the border from them. Now we can not do it to them. Gold River on Vancouver Island is lobbying for such an incinerator. And, best of all it is far enough away from heavily populated areas for emissions to diffuse. Dave Bains Surrey

Business wants census to be mandatory A MANDATORY CENSUS is impor-

tant to business. It allows us to create long-term planning for charitable fundraising, for implementing programs and services that support everything, from business, cultural, social, health care, education, housing , recreational needs – everything. Without that demographic data, we just can’t plan properly. After conducting a survey of our membership, the Surrey Board of Trade disagrees with the federal government’s decision to replace the mandatory long form census with a shorter voluntary survey. Like the Canadian Association for Business Economics and the Canadian Association of University Teachers, we are particularly concerned about the loss of the compulsory census long form as it will undermine and

impact the economy, research and innovation initiatives. The quality of data collected in the census would drop considerably if it was only through voluntary participation. Businesses and

governments all depend on data for analysis, making investment and operating decisions. Funding decisions by government are based on census data. Small errors in the data with a voluntary collection

Information is necessary COMPREHENSIVE CENSUS data is necessary for responsible government.

Allocation of public funds and electoral districts alone are two areas with tremendous influence over society. Tweak the numbers here and there, just a little bit, and the Canadian people will lose billions in privatization, loss of services, tax cuts for the wealthy and more corporate dominance. The Conservatives can’t argue with the results of well-funded, responsible government so they’re just trying to bury them. Jeff Moncalieri, Cloverdale

could cost provincial and municipal governments millions of dollars. Through the national census, we can at least have an understanding of our country that prides itself in economic, political and ethnic diversity across a geographically huge land mass. If a voluntary census were to take place, the lack of data (the unwillingness of people to fill out forms) leaves one wondering just what the government will do to keep gathering the data it needs to function effectively and efficiently. We strongly urge the government to reverse its decision to eliminate the census long form.

The call went straight to a voice mailbox, Juneau police said. The number the mysterious caller left turned out to be a business in Surrey, police said. A police search of

every parking lot in Juneau, a city of 30,000 people, failed to find any sign of the girl. The caller had claimed her parents were named John and Emma, Juneau-area residents who were both in custody, but the local prison has no record of a John or Emma McKenzie as inmates. Juneau Police said

they have contacted Surrey Mounties about the incident. A spokesperson for the Juneau Police Department (JPD) said they are also in touch with police in neighbouring New Westminster because of a similar incident “about four months ago” involving a phoned-in call for help by someone claiming to be a young girl in distress. The New Westminster call was believed to be a prank. The JPD spokesperson said the Juneau police have not yet decided if their call was a fake. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604599-0502 or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

tained action unit crews and 10 fire management specialists, bringing to 457 the number of outof-province fire personnel in action. Fifteen smoke jumpers from Washington State are also coming here. They’re being based out of the Cariboo and Prince George Fire Centres, but crews in all regions remain on high alert to the potential for new fires. B.C. also has more than 2,000 contract and emergency firefighters already in the field. More than 400 fires are currently burning in B.C. and about 1,300 have been recorded so far this year, consuming 107,000 hectares to date. That’s more than the average of 81,000 hectares burnt and the worst fire season since 2006 when 139,000 was lost. The province has so far spent $66.2 million – more than its $52-million fire fighting budget for 2010 – and the efforts are running at a cost of about $6 million per day. Some of the biggest blazes are near Williams Lake and Lillooet, and are being fought by a combination of ground crews, water bombers and helicopters. The challenging season is the result of hot dry conditions, coupled with lightning and wind. The fire danger is rated high to extreme across 80 per cent of the province.

fires in Russia that’s choking Moscow residents and disrupting aircraft flights there is also contributing to B.C.’s wildfire haze and air quality problems. “Some of the smoke is coming from Russia,” fire information officer Gwen Eamer said Friday. “Smoke can travel great distances.” She said the amount of smoke from Russian fires affecting B.C. would be relatively small. “The vast majority of the smoke visible around the province is from our active fires in B.C.” Some Muscovites have taken to wearing breathing masks and concerns have been raised that the Russian fires may recirculate radioactive particles from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. An air quality advisory was issued Wednesday and remains in effect for the Lower Mainland as well as other parts of B.C. Air quality is worst in the Quesnel and Williams Lake areas. COMMERCIAL fishermen will add to their catch of Fraser River sockeye salmon this week after fishery managers decided this summer’s run continues to look promising. Seine boats will fish from Sunday through Thursday in Johnstone Strait and part of Juan de Fuca Strait. The troll fleet was given the green light to fish Sunday until further notice in waters that include much of Georgia Strait, closer to Metro Vancouver. Gillnetters are being promised a three-hour opening in the Fraser River Tuesday. And sports anglers who have been allowed to fish sockeye as far upriver as the Mission bridge can also fish above that point starting Monday. Barry Rosenberger, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans area director for Interior B.C., said the intensified fishing comes in light of

a further upgrade Friday in the estimate of the early summer sockeye run, from 950,000 fish to 1.6 million. “They’re appearing healthy enough,” he said. “So it creates more allowable catch.” There’s no in-season estimate yet of either the summer run or the late summer run Fraser sockeye, the components of the run that are projected to yield the bulk of the fish this year. Pre-season forecasts suggested that the overall return of sockeye to the Fraser this year could be as high as 11 million. But conservationists have expressed caution, noting optimistic outlooks in past years have proven wildly inaccurate. The Cohen Commission investigating the decline of Fraser River sockeye in the last couple of years resumes hearings this fall. This is the first time in four years commercial salmon fishermen in Canada have been allowed to catch Fraser River sockeye.

Smoke from forest fires in B.C.’s Interior, plus some coming across the Pacific from wildfires in Russia, were blamed for the haze that hung over the Lower Mainland late last week. Surrey wins bronze, White Rock gets gold in New Brunswick

Rams Storm third at nationals get first win in Victoria

by Rick Kupchuk

THE PITCHING of Marina Demore lifted the Surrey Storm to a third-place finish at the 18-team Canadian Midget Girls Fastpitch Championships in St. John, New Brunswick. Demore earned victories in all three of Surrey’s playoff round victories Saturday, throwing 19 innings of shutout softball. The Storm were eliminated 3-0 by the defending champion White Rock Renegades Sunday morning. The Renegades went on to defeat the Scarborough Rays to repeat as national champions. Demore started the day pitching in relief against the Winnipeg Lightning, entering the game in the third inning with the Storm down 2-0. She then pitched four and two-thirds innings, shutting out the Lightning while allowing just two hits and striking out 10 batters. The Storm made the most of just five hits and four walks allowed by Winnipeg pitchers. Five Lightning errors led to seven unearned Surrey runs in an 8-2 victory. Demore pitched again two hours later, tossing a two-hitter in a 1-0 extra-innings win over the Quebec Rebelles. Demore also had two of Surrey’s three hits in the contest, driving in Jamie Randal for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth frame. The Storm made it three wins in a row in the playoff round Saturday night, blanking the Smitty’s Terminators of Manitoba 2-0 on a no-hitter from Demore, who collected another nine strikeouts. Sammie Olexa and Kaitlyn Cameron had RBIs, driving in Demore and Iris Chow. Surrey’s run ended Sunday, as the Renegades scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 3-0 victory. Demore took the loss, allowing just one earned run on five hits. She didn’t allow a walk, and struck out nine White Rock batters.

Olexa was named to the tournament’s first all-star team, while Chow won the Top Batter award. ■ The White Rock Renegades ’91 won a record fourth national championship in Saint John Sunday, adding a second consecutive Midget division title to the Pee Wee national championship in 2005 and another in the Bantam age group in 2007. “It’s always been our slogan – win our last game – and somebody made the comment after we won, that now we’d actually won our last game ever,” said head coach Chuck Westgard. “It was emotional, really emotional – especially for some of the girls who have been here for all four (titles).” In marching to the win, the Renegades weren’t without challenges. They cruised through the round-robin games with a 6-1 (won-lost) record, and secured double-life for the playoff rounds, meaning they’d need to be beaten twice to be eliminated. Chuck Turns Westgard out, they needed it, after a tough 7-2 loss to Scarborough in semifinals Saturday. The Ontario club advanced straight to the final. But White Rock needed a 3-0 win over the Storm Sunday to get to the championship game, which they also won by a 3-0 score, this time over Scarborough. White Rock ace Nicole Sidor was in the pitcher’s circle for both wins Sunday, and earned a tournament all-star selection along with Renegades outfielders Toni Shutte and Marina Groenewegen. Lisa Fadden was named MVP of the playoffs, after hitting better than .500.

“It was emotional, really emotional.”

AFTER TWO straight losses to start

the season, the Big Kahuna Rams finally put a notch in the win column, after a 35-17 road win Saturday over the Victoria Rebels. The Rams’ offence, while perhaps not in top gear, was still in better form than the previous two weeks, with 246 yards of net offence and a handful of big plays. Rookie quarterback Nathaniel White, an Earl Marriott Secondary alum, connected with new receiver Matt Chapdelaine – a B.C. Lions’ draft pick – on a 91-yard touchdown strike; wideout Zach Middleton had a 65-yard reception; reigning B.C. Football Conference (BCFC) special teams player-of-the-year Nick Downey had an 86-yard punt return for a score; and defensive back Belah Small had two interceptions, one of which he returned 43 yards into the end zone. Running back Jake Glass had the Rams’ other major score on an 11-yard run. White finished the day threefor-six for 105 yards passing – 91 of which came on the Chapdelaine toss – while Jon Ellingson also saw time under centre, completing just three of 11 passes, for 85 total yards, including the 65-yard Middleton touchdown. Ellingson threw two interceptions, while White threw one. Victoria managed two touchdowns, both from running back Sam Adu, and one field goal against the Big Kahuna defence, which was led by Small, who had five tackles and one pass knockSee REBELS / Page 16

s part of its ongoing world tour, the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace was unveiled in the courtyard of Aldergrove’s Hoa Nghiem Monastery on Sunday and is now on display until Aug. 15. Ian Green, chairman and director of The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Australia, which commissioned the statue and organizes its touring, said the Buddha has received a tremendous response so far. “In the first year of its travels around the world, over 4.5 million people have come to see it,” Green said. He expects it to be tremendously popular in Aldergrove as well. “We expect over the nine days 200,000 people will come to see it,” Green said. The statue is the largest Buddha carved from gemstonequality jade in the world. It is 2.7 metres high, weighs over four tonnes and is valued at $5 million. It was carved from the Polar Pride, a 18-tonne boulder of gemstone-quality jade that was discovered in northern B.C. in 2000 by Surrey’s Jade West company. The Polar Pride remains the largest boulder of gemstone-quality jade ever found in the world. KIRKBRIDE, Agnes A. May 6, 1924-August 6, 2010 In her husband’s loving arms, with family at her side, Agnes passed into Heaven on Friday, August 6, 2010. She was born May 6, 1924 in Vancouver, B.C. to Thomas and Mary Shannon. She grew up in Vancouver with her six brothers and sisters. In April of 1948 she married her handsome American soldier, the love of her life, Glenn Kirkbride. They raised their four children in North Seattle, and retired to Birch Bay where they recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Everyone called her Grandma. She always had cookie dough in the fridge, ready to roll out for family, church, and neighborhood kids alike. With knitting bag at her side, her hands were never idle and her beautiful baby blankets are treasured by several generations. She leaves her loving family waiting to join her in Heaven one day. Her husband Glenn; children, Heather (Chuck), Neal (Terry), Glenn (Tonya), Barbara (Scott) and Noelle; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren plus 2. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 11, at 2 PM at Good News Fellowship Church, 1252 W. Axton Road in Ferndale. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lake Retreat Baptist Camp, 27850 Retreat-Kanaskat Rd. SE, Ravensdale, WA. You may share your memories of Agnes in the online guestbook at: www.molesfuneralhomes.com
