Meet you at the market
Surinder Kambo of Maan Farms displays her fresh harvest of carrots and beets during the Surrey Urban Farmers’ Market’s opening day on Wednesday. Located in Whalley next to the North Surrey Recreation Centre, the market also features baked good, meats, and handmade goods, and is open every Wednesday between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. until Sept. 29.
Scrapping more garbage Surrey piloting composting program this fall; input sought by Kevin Diakiw SOON, SURREY residents will be scraping their plates
into a separate waste bin, which will be hauled to a local composting facility. In fact, this fall the city will launch a pilot project collecting organic waste every week and regular garbage only every two. Those organics represent about 65 per cent of the area’s garbage and currently go to the landfill. As such, regular garbage pick ups shouldn’t be required as often. Surrey is currently holding public meetings on how waste diversion will take place. Rob Costanzo, the manager spearheading the change,

went to what he thought would be a lightly attended meeting in North Surrey this month. Because of a communication mix-up, the meeting was held outside the doorway to a room at the North Surrey Recreation Centre. Costanzo said it was perfect. About three people came for the meeting, and another 117 came to see what the fuss was about. From now on, Costanzo said, the waste meetings will be held in public areas. He notes that the public has become insistent that correct environmental measures are put in place. For each idea he floats at a meeting, he has residents asking him “why don’t you do this, too?”
SEVEN MONTHS after he underwent radiation therapy at the Fraser Valley Cancer Centre in Surrey, David Earl Meisner discovered he never had a tumour on his spine. What he had was a fracture that had gone untreated for 10 months. Meisner is now suing the doctor who ordered the radiation treatment and staff at the cancer centre who carried it out for negligence and compensation for pain and suffering. According to a written statement of claim filed in the Vancouver B.C. Supreme Court registry, Meisner was being treated for prostate cancer when he went to Surrey Memorial Hospital in June of 2008 with pain in his right lower back. See PATIENT / Page 3
