Huge payday for part-time poker player by Rick Kupchuk MATT JARVIS’ DREAM has come true, earning the Surrey resident

at least $811,823. The 25-year-old has qualified for the November Nine at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, remaining in contention for the first place prize of a little less than $9 million. “This is amazing,” said Jarvis. “It’s crazy it all worked out. It’s a tough table – there’s a ton of really good players, they just pound, pound, pound.” Paying $10,000 each to enter the tournament, 7,319 players began play July 5 with an eye on the biggest payout from the prize pool of $68,798,600. After eight days of competition, Jarvis found himself among the nine survivors, who will return to Las Vegas to play at the final table Nov. 6-8. He guaranteed his seat at the table by knocking out Brandon Steven of Kansas on Sunday, reducing the field to the November Nine. “It’s all about making the final nine,” said Jarvis, one of only two members in the final group not listed as a professional poker player. “Day Five was a real rollercoaster for me. I was just trying to keep it slow and steady, low risk.” Each of the nine qualifiers have received a ninth place prize Matt Jarvis of $811,823. Eight players will earn more in November, with a top five placing worth more than $2.3 million. Jarvis is currently in fifth place with 16.7 million chips. Jonathan Duhamel of Boucherville, Quebec is the tournament leader with 65.975 million. Jason Sentie of Minnesota is ninth at 7.625 million. Jarvis has been playing poker for six years, getting most of his experience from online tournaments. So the bright lights of Vegas weren’t that much of a distraction. His father, Norm, is a former PGA Tour golf professional, and Matt has spent time caddying for dad in major tournaments. “I caddied for him on the champions tour on the PGA,” he said. “There’s cameras there, so I’ve been on the other side of the ropes.” Staying calm will be the key in November, said Matt, who had friends and family in Las Vegas with him. “I’m very excited. It’s all going over my head right now,” he said Sunday. “I have my sister and my girlfriend, and some of my closest friends out to watch me. I just want to leave the side stuff on the side. I just want to try and keep it up.”

He’s already won in excess of $811,000 and now, after defeating more than 7,300 other poker players, Matt Jarvis will have a chance to take home nearly $9 million when he competes at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas in November. Jarvis is a business student and is one of only two of the finalists not listed as a professional poker player.

slammed a handcuffed teenager into the hood of a police cruiser three years ago has been placed on probation for six months and ordered to perform 25 hours of community work service. Const. Francois “Frank” Lambert was also ordered to pay a $50 victim impact surcharge fee by Surrey Provincial Court judge Donald Gardiner, who described the incident as a “momentary lapse of judgment.” Lambert was convicted of assault in November of 2009, but he was not sentenced until June 9 of this year and the decision was not published on the provincial court website until July 19. Judge Gardiner granted Lambert a conditional discharge, which means the conviction will be purged after three years and Lambert will have no criminal record. Lambert was charged with assault after a July 19, 2007 incident at Georges Vanier Elementary School in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood. Another, senior officer filed a complaint after he witnessed Lambert escorting 18-year-old Karamjit Gill, whose wrists were handcuffed behind his back. When Gill said something, the officer said Lambert slammed the teenager onto the hood of the police cruiser hard enough to dent it. “Not another f__ word,” Lambert said. “I told you, not another word.”
