Iggy Azalea Mum’s The Word

Never one to shy away from controversy, singer Iggy Azalea, mum to 16-month-old son Onyx, has spoken out about juggling her work and parental responsibilities openly saying she finally feels; “super fulfilled.”

Iggy Azalea, 31, has received major column inches this month advocating mums having a career as well as caring for their kids. This year already, Iggy has released an album, is currently supporting Pit Bull on tour in the US, has launched her make-up line Totally Plastic and is also pursuing a modelling career.

“It makes me feel so much more fulfilled to be able to accomplish all of these tasks simultaneously,” she said, “It’s really difficult, but it makes it so satisfying.“

Iggy says she loves spending time with her son and adores being a mum but feels it is important for women not to give up their careers, despite it being hard work. She admits it is difficult to juggle - especially as she has been surviving some nights on just three hours sleep.

“It can be stressful. My son and I love to spend time together, so he stays up until 7 o’clock at night. I go to sleep at 4.30am some nights and he gets up at 7.15am!”

Her routine has caused her to gain a new-found respect for working mums saying her life is a “never ending struggle” but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s great to know that the projects that I am involved in are

going to be something that my son will see and say, ‘My mum was super cool. Look at what she did!’” It’s all about being a good role model and having a good work ethic to show your kids.

It’s been a tough year for Iggy romantically too. She has had to go through a very public break-up with her rapper ex-boyfriend, Playboi Carti, and father of Onyx which has been played out in the media. Iggy’s frustrations with his lack of effort and commitment to Onyx has seen her take to social media to vent her frustrations.

She accused Carti of not spending Christmas Day with Onyx just months after they split. “Too bad you got an album out but can’t even come to Christmas with your own son,” Iggy tweeted. “And I was gonna keep it cute and let you live but nah, Not after I just peeped that trifling sh-t. TRIFLING!”

Before Carti, Iggy was engaged to Los Angeles Lakers star Nick Young but called off their engagement in 2016 due to his infidelity when a video surfaced of him talking about other women and then she actually discovered him cheating on CCTV footage.

She said at the time: "I broke up with Nick because I found out he

had brought other women into our home while I was away and caught them on security footage. I feel like I don´t even know who the hell it is I´ve been loving all this time.”

Iggy has said she is not actively looking for a boyfriend at the moment but hasn’t ruled it out if the right guy comes along. Judging by her latest Pit Bull tour pics with her sensational nipped in waist and hotpants she won’t be short of offers.

Australian-born Iggy has always been considered a ballsy girl, having dropped out of school at 16 to travel to America in the hope of cracking the music industry – a dream that very few actually get to live out. But Iggy has noticeable talents; being able to sing, rap and write her own music and definitely made an impression on the notoriously tough record industry. She spent several years making her dream a reality, mixing with top producers and rappers. Her debut studio album, “The New Classic” peaked among the top five of several charts worldwide in 2014 and topping the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums making her the first non-American female rapper to reach the top of the charts. An amazing accolade for a then 23-year-old musician.

The album was preceded by her debut single "Work", and generated the US Billboard Hot 100 chart topping single "Fancy", which made Iggy the fourth female rapper in the history to reach number one,

claiming the longest-leading reign with seven consecutive weeks. Additionally, she was featured on Ariana Grande's single "Problem", which peaked at number two while "Fancy" was number one. She joined The Beatles as the only act to rank at numbers one and two simultaneously with two Hot 100 entries. She also went on to achieve three top ten hits simultaneously with the aforementioned songs along with the fifth single from the album, "Black Widow", later that year. Azalea's second studio album “Digital Distortion” with its lead single, "Team" was a major hit for her. On August 13 this year her third studio album “The End Of An Era” dropped with rave reviews making it to number 9 in the charts. The catchy lyrics and tracks were a tribute to the end of her 20’s and served as a “time capsule of that decade of her life,” with tracks like “Sip It” from Tyga and even a collaboration with Posh Spice.

Iggy has now said she is taking a break from recording for a couple of years to “pursue other interests” but indicated she will be back after getting more life experience. Whatever happens to Iggy now you can be sure the outspoken singer will stay true to herself. She regularly pipes up with refreshing comments in the media and has even advocated more people actually admitting to having plastic surgery following her breast augmentation and rhinoplasty operations in 2015. “I think, people should be more accepting of the fact that both famous and non-famous women are having cosmetic procedures. That’s just the reality. And I think more people need to admit that shit so it doesn’t have to be so taboo - because we’re all doing it anyway!” Iggy claimed, again, never one to shy away from controversy!

And this is another reason why her fans love her - because she is so candidly open and honest about her life. SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 02 41
