Work in this area ranges widely, from the structuralist theory of Tzvetan Todorov, which emphasizes the fantastic as a liminal space, to works on the connections (political, historical, and literary) between medievalism and popular culture.

The movie Avatar is a good representation of fantasy combined with technology. Avatar combined human and technology to create something magical with the use of advanced motion capture technology. Innovations included a new system for lighting massive areas like Pandora’s jungle, a motion-capture stage or “volume” six times larger than any previously used, and an improved method of capturing facial expressions, enabling full performance capture. In December 2006, James Cameron¬, Director and Producer described Avatar as “a futuristic tale set on a planet 200 years hence...an old-fashioned jungle adventure with an environmental conscience that aspires to a mythic level of storytelling.” He also goes on to say, “This movement is definitely here to stay especially as long as there are computer programmers/software people that can merge the human aspect.” Mystical captures this trend direction by using mystical creatures like Pegasus and unicorns as the main icons.
