Vom Bahnhof Sumvitg/Cumpadials folgen Sie dem braunen Wegweiser bis ins Dorf Sumvitg. Dort überqueren Sie die Hauptstrasse und folgen weiter dem Wegweiser nach S. Benedetg. Nach ca. 45 Minuten erreichen Sie die Kapellenruine, wenig später die neue Kapelle von Peter Zumthor. Mit dem Auto brauchen Sie fünf Minuten ab Sumvitg, der Parkplatz liegt kurz vor der Kapellenruine.

Chapel / Kapelle Sogn Benedetg
Follow the brown signs from the station at Sumvitg/ Cumpadials to the village of Sumvitg. You cross the main road and then follow the signs to the village of S. Benedetg. You reach the chapel ruins in about 45 minutes on foot, for the Zumthor chapel continue for some further minutes. Alternatively, you get there by car in 5 minutes from Sumvitg. The car park is to the right just before the chapel ruins.

THE TWO CHAPELS OF S. BENEDETG
Tausend Jahre lang trotzte die Capletta Sogn Benedetg oberhalb von Sumvitg Sturm und Wetter, bis sie am 10. Februar 1984 durch eine gewaltige Staublawine komplett zerstört wurde. In der Folge wurde der bekannte Architekt Peter Zumthor mit dem Bau einer neuen Kapelle an sicherer Lage beauftragt. Diese neue Kapelle wurde dann im Jahre 1989 eingeweiht. Seither sind auch die Ruinen der alten Kapelle restauriert worden.
More than a thousand years the chapel of Sogn Benedetg has withstood storm and weather. Then, on 10 February 1984, a huge dust avalanche destroys the chapel almost completely. Star architect Peter Zumthor is commissioned to design a new chapel on safer grounds. Its inauguration takes place in 1989. In the meantime, also the ruins of the original chapel have been carefully restored. THE RUINS The u-shaped choir dates to the 9th century and is the oldest ever found. In 1268, Rigenza da Valle from Sumvitg and Chonrad de Russen from Ruschein expanded the chapel ship and founded a Beguines settlement. Theses Christian laypeople looked after the sick and poor. In 1934 a spectacular find is made: A mural of the last judgement day dated to 1330, which now is displayed at the Monastery in Disentis. 30 years after the disastrous avalanche, locals have restored the remains of the original chapel.
DIE RUINE Aus dem 9. Jahrhundert datiert der hufeisenförmige Chor, der zur ältesten seiner Art zählt. 1268 erweiterten Rigenza da Valle aus Sumvitg und Chonrad de Rusen aus Ruschein das Kapellenschiff und gründeten eine Beginnensiedlung. Diese Gemeinschaft christlicher Laien kümmerte sich um Arme und Kranke. 1934 wurde ein spektakulärer Fund gemacht: Eine Darstellung des Weltgerichts aus dem Jahr 1330, die sich heute im Kloster Disentis befindet. Nun ist die Ruine – 35 Jahre nach dem Lawinenunglück – durch Einheimische liebevoll restauriert worden. DIE ZUMTHOR-KAPELLE Die neue, von Peter Zumthor entworfene Kapelle befindet sich einige Hundert Meter vom alten Standort entfernt. Der Holzbau integriert Elemente der lokalen Bauweise, ist gleichzeitig aber auch sehr modern. So spielt der tropfenförmige Grundriss mit natürlichen geometrischen Formen. Im Innern verleihen Oblichter und das viele Holz dem Raum eine warme und leichte Stimmung.
THE ZUMTHOR CHAPEL The new Chapel designed by Peter Zumthor was built a few hundred meters from the old one. The wooden structure incorporates elements of local architecture, yet it is very modern. Its drop-like layout plays with natural geometrical forms, in the inside the wood and light create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
