Abstract The proposed gallery is about the dead industries in Essex. Some parts of the structure has been based on the original factory buildings of the industries. Also the manufacturing process has been tried to applied on the circulation of the architecture. The gallery focuses on 3 main industries specifically. The industries are; Bata Shoe factory, Marconi Wireless Company and Courtauld’s Co. The strategy for the proposal has been developed by looking into the area of the site and how it was unique compared to the other towns, cities. The Essex area was famous for it’s industrial development on it’s prime time. As the Tilbury town developed by the factory of Bata Shoes, the gallery proposal changed into focusing on the dead industries. Treating the program as a graveyard for those chosen industries. The 3 main industries are the main focus of the gallery for the permanent exhibition space, which are, Bata Shoe Factory, Marconi Wireless Company and Courtauld’s Co. The main strategy is to use the factory workshop areas and translating that language into a gallery proposal with the use of the first investigations done as collages and models before the site study. The main focus of the gallery is the 3 permanent exhibitions and it’s parts of translating the factory focuses or spaces into the outside exhibition spaces and entrances. The other parts of the gallery are as follows; temporary exhibition, office spaces, back of house entrance, storage, shop and cafeteria. The factories symbolizes the era of which they were the best on their fields, but now as much famous now. The meaning is almost same as catacombs, a graveyard but for factories. The gallery focuses on temporary and permanent exhibition spaces. The permanent exhibition is going to be for the industries, which would exhibit the products and machinery once that has been used. The temporary gallery space would be for upcoming artists, which would be adaptable in any kind of exhibition.

The site analysis starts with the walk done in Tilbury, as the part of site walk. Then it carries into looking towards the main attraction parts represented with images and sketches. Maps are done in order to get the main structural analysis of Essex area, by the topics which were carried from the first concept drawings and sketches. By the end a proper site is chosen according to the research, done in the area and drawings has been made.

The design process starts with collages (as shown on the first page) and carries through paper models. By that way main structure of the design has been shaped through early studies before the site seeing. The sketches shows how the ‘architecture’ could be used as gallery displaying and how they can be used. The sketchbook also studies what can be the topic as display in the gallery. These studies on the sketchbook has been done before the site seeing to get an idea of what kind of things could be used in the gallery.

Circulation of the building shapes the design of the architecture. Therefore it is quite important to study it a lot before starting the drawings and models. For my understanding l always start with basic sketches and case studies for better understanding of the concept. Then l carry with computer diagrams and see how it would be shaped for private and public circulations in color. Before starting the actual model and the drawings l do a basic paper model to visualize and study the concept better. On this page I am showing how the circulation progressed before finishing the design of the gallery. I always start with sketches and try to visualize it 3d with both computer and physical models. It helps me not to get stuck on my design process and shapes most of it.

Second year project called ‘Umbrella Emporium’. The project started with the concept of using umbrella and it’s materials. The project also investigates the idea of celebrating rain and adapting it through the architecture. It is a semi-open structure and implies rain in the middle. Collected rain fills the room on the basement before vanishing. Also on the first floor there are spaces for producing umbrellas.

Puroposal for the rain collecting steps, during the rain it would be filling up with the rain water which suggest some different type of idea of celebrating the rain.

Design and research process has been showed through some sketches and drawings. The design for this project has started from doing some basic models (shapes) by using umbrella parts. It later used on the structure of the design. The sketches and collages also shows how the design progressed.
