Welcome... How we handle accounts We are passionate about protecting our customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; interests and so we have to be sure that an application for a new account is bona fide. For that reason we do not open accounts or give access to our web site unless one of our sales team has made a personal visit to the enquirerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premises and met personally with the owner or manager. New accounts are dealt with initially on a proforma basis. If you are ordering fabrics, we ask for a deposit of 25% of the total value of the order. We then allocate the deposit in the form of a 25% deduction as the fabrics come in. If your order is delivered over a period of time, that means that your deposit will be used against all the orders, not just the first. When opening an account, we require that a standard New Account Application Form be completed and, where possible, trade references given. If you are an established business with satisfactory references from other suppliers, we will normally provide credit facilities very quickly. If you are a new business, once a clear pattern of prompt payments is established, we may offer you a credit account.

Like many fabric names, it has changed meaning over the years, in this case from luxurious to commonplace. In 13century French, mosulin meant “cloth of silk and gold.” The meaning “everyday cotton fabric for shirts, bedding, etc.” is ﬁrst attested 1872 in American English.

Scrim is a very ﬁne mesh, normally made of polypropylene, that is used in waddings to give them greater stability.

What you don't see is what you get - Waddings What do you need to make a quilt? Fabric, thread and, of course, wadding (or batting, if you prefer). It’s easy to spend hours choosing the fabric, matching threads and getting the backing right but the unsung hero of a successful quilt is what you can’t see. Get it right and the quilting will be a dream, the end product will look stunning and it will last for ages; get it wrong and, well . . . and by then it is too late! Wadding now comes in many different types and fibres. Long gone are the days when the only decision you had to make was 2, 4 or 6oz!? There are at least 14 different fibres/blends to choose from! You now have the long-established cotton, polyester and a blend of the two: also you can get wool and such exotic fibres as, bamboo or soya and more. Sometimes it can sound more like an Oriental takeaway than a wadding choice! So, what to use? If you really have a favourite that you know works for you then it is difficult to branch out. But different waddings have different properties: some are easier to hand stitch, some drape better, some give you an antique look and some look nothing in the raw but are beautiful in a quilt. As a retailer you have a wide selection of choices when it comes to what you stock. There are full-length bolts which may be up to 20m+ long which is a big investment (and a lot of storage space). To encourage you to try more different types and offer a wider range, we at EQS offer full lengths (all 15m), half-length boards

(double-folded so that they will fit on fabric shelves) and four different sizes of pre-packed cut pieces. That way you can have a much wider assortment for your customers without spending a fortune and having to turn over half your shop to storing bolts of the stuff.

How are waddings made? Most of us still remember the good old 2oz, 4oz and 6oz wadding. Big and fluffy, it had a curious crunchy feel to it and soon squished down to something quite flat. It is still available today but possibly more used in puffa jackets and so on than quilting. The weight system was easy: 4oz was twice the weight and thickness of the 2oz and the 6oz, three times. Today most waddings used in quilting are needle-punched and are technically around 4oz although this gives no indication of loft or thickness. So, what does all this mean? Needle-punching is pretty well the same as felting although instead of using needles with barbs, the fibres are punched through a very fine scrim (netting), normally of polypropylene where it gets tangled up. That holds the fibres together. Occasionally no scrim is used which gives a softer handle but does allow the wadding to be pulled apart more easily. Other ways of keeping the fibres together include glue sprayed onto the layers of wadding or inserting a low-melt fibre into the wadding which is then passed through a heater; the low-melt content softens and then, as it cools, it sticks to the other fibres. While more economical to make, the downside to these two methods is that it gives the finished product that crunchy feel we spoke about earlier. So, if you want your wadding to be stable, choose one needle-punched with scrim which can be stitched up to 10” apart (always check any instructions if you are unsure).

The same wadding but without the scrim should be the choice if you are looking for a softer drape where stability is not so important; these waddings can normally be stitched up to 6” apart. Finally the older style waddings are possibly more suitable where you are after a high-loft finish as in outer jackets, duvets etc. although stitching may need to be less far apart.

Which fibres to use? From a time when commercially produced waddings were offered in the Model T Ford choice of “any fibre you want as long as it’s polyester”, there is now a bewildering selection of fibres, blends and types. Not only do we have polyester and the traditional favourite of cotton, we see wool, bamboo, soy, silk, natural, bleached white and black. Perhaps the easiest decision to make is one of colour. Essentially, it depends on the predominant colour of the quilt top and the weight of the fabric. The lighter or looser the weave of the fabric, the more important it is to select a compatible colour for the wadding. That is when black comes into its own: dark fabrics work better with dark waddings. At the same time, light fabrics will become discoloured by having a black wadding underneath. The choice of white or natural will again be driven by the main colour on top. So, what are the characteristics of the various fibres that will work best in different situations? Cotton – the traditional choice for quilts, cotton has the great advantage that it is the same raw material as the fabric. This means that there is an inherent compatibility between the various elements. The main drawback is that cotton has a tendency to “drag” on the needle; not a problem when machine quilting but when stitching by hand, it does make it harder work than, say, polyester. More recently a new cleaning process for cotton has been developed. Known as "UltraClean" this process cleans out over 99% of foreign matter. Look out for it on Sew Simple labels in the future.

That said, there are some cotton waddings on the market such as Cream Rose which have a special finish to make stitching much easier. Being a natural fibre, cotton is more flame resistant than a synthetic product. Polyester – this is a cheaper alternative to cotton and has much better washability properties than any natural fibre. This makes it the preferred choice if the quilt is likely to find itself in a washing machine or sink on a regular basis, such as play mats. It is also easier to needle by hand. There is a great variety of qualities of polyester out there so be sure to buy a reputable brand! Wool – this fibre has great thermal properties and so lends itself to bed covers, lap quilts and so on. In some rare cases a user may have an allergy to wool and so, although the wadding is totally encased between the other layers it may be worth checking if in doubt. Like cotton, it is fire retardant by nature and so, along with its thermal qualities, may be ideal to cot quilts. However, it won’t stand up to such frequent washing so if it is likely to become soiled on a regular basis, better think of a different wadding! Bamboo – the one great attraction about bamboo is that it is very sustainable, it is fast growing, grows where nothing else will and uses hardly any water. In essence it is a weed and requires no special cultivation, pesticides or fertilisers. On top of that, the fibre is extracted using primarily water and a lot of pounding, no harsh chemicals.

To the touch it is silky soft and drapes beautifully in the quilt; in fact, it is so soft that it is common to find it blended with cotton to achieve a bit more “body ” and so make it more sewable. Soy – very similar to bamboo to the touch, soft and smooth, soy is a cultivated crop and so does not have the same green credentials. Insulating wadding – a relatively new arrival, this wadding feels more like felt and contains heat-resistant properties, often Mylar fibre which is used in the space programme. It is ideal for such projects as place mats, cool bags, tea cosies etc. where it is important to keep things hot, keep them cold or protect surfaces from extreme temperatures. With so many types, fibres, blends and colours, how do you decide what to use? Inevitably we all have our favourites that we tend to stick to. But sometimes it is just worth branching out and being a bit adventurous. For example, look at Quilt Light and you may think that it is a skinny little thing that will achieve nothing in a quilt. But once it is sewn in, it gives a wonderful antique look which, given the right design of quilt, is unmatched. Use it for a bed quilt and you will be sorely disappointed!

We hope to have shed some light on this subject. There is still more we could have covered, not least shrinkage and bearding. If there is enough interest, perhaps we can put together an article covering these topics. Finally, given the wide variety of fibres, constructions and finishes, the one tip that may save a lot of anguish is “always read the instructions”. Once a quilt is stitched and finished, finding out, for example, that it should not have been washed in the machine when you have done so is a bit late!

With a ceramic lead, this pencil gives a clear, fine line that is just 0.9mm thick. The ceramic gives you smooth action when drawing, there are no particles to get trapped in the fibres and the colour remains constant throughout. Thanks to its construction, the lead will not break as easily as standard propelling pencils.

The ink in this Sewline pen has been specially formulated to stay visible for up to five days. The speed at which it disappears depends on the humidity in the atmosphere. It has a smooth-rolling ball tip which enables you to mark fine, even lines and create smooth curves.

Trio Multi-Function Pen Two versions: one has an ingenious pen with two Sewline marking pencils and one roller ball. Hold the clip section and turn the finger grip. Stayer Fine Point Markers Fine point pen, marks permanently on fabrics, template plastics and stencils without smudging or bleeding. In black or brown. Dries quickly.

Aqua Eraser and Liquid Eraser Set The gentle way to remove water soluble pencil marks from fabrics. Fill the reservoir with water and a couple of drops of the proprietary detergent. Gentle enough for all fabrics yet effective enough to remove all water soluble marks. Replacement nibs available for when the original nib gets dirty.

Water Soluble Glue Stick (incl. one refill) Just run the glue pen along the fabric edge, hold the pieces together and you have a temporary bond. Goes on coloured, so you can see where youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve glued, dries clear. Washes out and will not gum up your needle.

Stea m-A-Seam II (page 16) is a fabulous product, if you want to applique on your bag. It has a pressure sensitive adhesive that allows for a temporary hold to your materials. There is no pressing until your entire applique is in place when a stea m iron produces a permanent result. It is ideal for use with sheer and lightweight fabrics like silk, chiffon, taffeta or rayon as well as delicate ribbons, trims and lace. Available in standard and “lite” weight. Fast-2-Fuse (page 16) helps to reinforce your bags, especially the gussets. A stiff interfacing with a fusible surface on both sides. Simply iron on your fabric for a secure bond. Can be washed and tumble dried. Wadding (page 13) for padding and stabilising bags and totes.
