Susana Palacios, Portfolio Publishing Coordinator Musical and educative content developer at Banco de la República Application: Fulbright Mincultura Arts and Cultural Management with an emphasis in Community Arts My name is Susana Palacios. I am a music performance graduate Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia. For the past four years I have been working for the Cultural Division at Banco de la República, Colombia’s Central Bank. I am responsible for producing many of our concert series print materials and coordinating several of the music education initiatives that take place in Bogota and 28 other branches of our organization, including workshops, kid’s concerts and conferences. My main goal is to develop the skills to conceive, produce and present concerts and outreach activities geared towards a multicultural audience. Colombia is a diverse country that houses different musical cultures that coexist and communicate with each other. Traditional, world, pop, classical and early music are enjoyed by a wide array of people. In a country such as Colombia, which has an enormous social inequality problem, the arts are uniquely positioned to produce social transformation processes. The arts have an essential power that move, inspire, support and accompany our human existence. As a creative producer and content editor, in my work I have conceived several projects that seek to engage audiences and invite them to understand music beyond the senses.

DISCOVER Well-designed and interesting program notes lure audience members into the enjoyment of a concert experience, stimulating their curiosity and allowing for a deeper understanding of the musicians, composers and the history surrounding their music.

Program Notes Reading is one of the main ways of connecting with the arts. Through a book, people can discover an infinte world of ideas. The availability of program notes at our concerts creates communities that read together while listening to and enjoying music. Program notes also become a physical and tangible memento of a concert season. Despite the limited resources of our organization, through my work with concert programs and program notes, we have been able to transform what we do, offering organized, concise and pertinent information to the members of our audience. Program notes designed and thought of specifically for adults, family and kids are an invitation to travel to other unimaginable worlds.

P L AY & LEARN The program expands the audience’s musical appreciation, which strengthens their capacity to enjoy music as a wholesome experience. Play and learn have educational activities to strengthen the professional development of young Colombians.

Kids Concerts Over time, our organization has expanded the age range of its concert series to include all age groups. However, recognizing there is an absence of music education programs in private and public schools and a lack of quality musical programming, we have a strong emphasis on developing activities for children and their families. These concerts allow children to expand their musical creativity, develop a strong sense of entitlement over music and the spaces where music is performed and make cultural activities a permanent part of their lives by using appropriate artistic and pedagogical methods, conducive to the creation of new critical and participatory audiences.

BelĂŠn Candelaria Neighborhood BogotĂĄ

Community Programs Casa B Diversity and cultural plurality are characteristics of the Candelaria Neighborhood in Bogotá, where our Concert Hall is located. However, there are several social and economic conditions that affect the communities that for many years have been living in this neighborhood. We started a community program to create and establish communication channels with the population that lives close to our cultural center, but who in general do not have access to cultural activities in the city. I personally coordinated the outreach project for Casa B – an afterschool program that benefits 30 young children form Belén, one of Bogota’s most underprivileged communities. This video presents the first meeting between the children of Casa B and Bituin, one of our guest artists.

CONNECT Create virtual spaces where people can access digital cultural content and communicate with each other.

Learn and information As a social media manager I have implemented and improved the use of digital tools for broadcasting and promoting workshops, lectures and concerts. Through this work I have motivated our digitally-based audience members to expand their understanding and enjoyment of music and make use of our resources both in the digital and physical environments.

Social media posts provide information related to the concerts, historical trivia, and other content that people consider entertaining, informative and valuable. Currently we operate the following platforms:

The YouTube channel belongs directly to the Library Network. Sometimes we post conferences or interviews with artists. The experience has shown us that successful content relates to issues such as history, politics and culture.

Ex. A conference about Western Music: 15,270 visits. Start date 2012.

Blogs Blogs contain translated articles from the most prestigious music journals. Our blog provides opportunities for our digital community to get a deeper understanding of musical matters. We have at least one relevant publication per week. Example:

OPUS OPUS is a digital database that contains the history of our recital hall including a comprehensive list of, artists, works and composers that have been featured in our programming. This database, scheduled to be launched in 2016, will allow our audience members to relate intellectually to our hall’s past and engage in a dialogue about its contributions and omissions, hence strengthening its spirit and potential to serve.

REFLECT

In order to stimulate the attendance to our hall’s events, it is important to generate opportunities for people to discuss and communicate through the development of lectures and conferences. Dialogues create deep reflections that transform and enhance the arts experience.

Through conferences, lectures, blogs and a cultural mediation we invite different people to reflect and find meaning in music, its stories and language.

Conferences Education, culture and respect are the main objectives of the conferences. Inspiring people through other disciplines such as film, arts, literature and science allows for the creation of a spirit of understand and respect for each other.
