A visual and cultural history of hip hop, charting its meteoric rise from underground trailblazer to global tastemaker To tell the story of contemporary American culture is to tell the story of hip hop. From its humble, underground origins, hip hop transcended the confines of rap music and spread its influence across a broad spectrum of American life – fashion, film, art, sports, politics, language – to become a cultural movement of profound influence. Organized chronologically from the 1970s to the present, Rapper’s Deluxe charts this tale of transformation, following hip hop’s arduous, but always triumphant, journey as it rose up to dominate the game.

Dr. Todd Boyd is Price Chair for the Study of Race and Popular Culture and Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at USC. A media commentator, author, producer, and consultant, Dr. Boyd has appeared in documentaries such as The Last Dance (ESPN, 2020) and Muhammed Ali (PBS, 2021). His body of work includes seven books and his essays have appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and the Guardian.

This may look like a fun garden party, but there is more going on here!

PORTRAITS WITH PETS

The figures you see here are gods and goddesses from Ancient Greek and Roman mythology, and each person shows clues about who they are.

Frida Kahlo’s imaginative self-portraits showed meaningful things relating to her life and Mexican heritage. Is there an animal you think is so great that you like to draw it or take pictures of it? Maybe it’s an animal you’ve seen at a zoo or a pet you adore? You may have even included them in selfies you’ve taken or pictures you’ve drawn of yourself. In this painting, the artist Frida Kahlo has painted herself with her spider monkey, Fulang-Chang, and her dog, Señor Xolotl. Kahlo kept many pets in her home in Mexico, including monkeys, dogs, a parrot and a cat. They often appear in her paintings, and of the fifty-five paintings she made of herself, she included monkeys in eight of them! Do you see the coloured ribbons that appear in these paintings around the artist and the animals? They are there to show the loving connection tying them together. But what

On the far right is a grey-blue figure named Zephyrus. He was the Greek god of the west winds. His strong, long wings (hidden behind the branches), help him move the wintry clouds away and bring in the warmer spring weather. Zephyrus is chasing a beautiful young woman called Chloris. As he captures her, her breath turns into flowers, which you can see falling from her lips. Once caught, Chloris turns into Flora, the goddess of flowers and spring. You can see Flora wearing the flowery dress. The flowers spill from Chloris’ mouth onto Flora’s dress, and Flora scatters them onto the grass beneath their feet.

made her pets so special? Kahlo was in a bus accident when she was younger, and the injuries left the artist unable to have children. Throughout her life, she became close to her many pets, and she loved them as family. Some of the animals also had meaningful connections to her Mexican heritage, which was very important to Kahlo. Do you notice how Señor Xolotl seems to not have much fur? That’s because he was a breed of hairless dog called a Xoloitzcuintle. They are the national dog of Mexico and were special to the native Maya and Aztec people of Mexico for thousands of years. Spider monkeys were also meaningful in Aztec culture. They were seen as playful creatures, and were connected to the god of music, poetry, and dance.

The woman in the middle of the painting is thought to be Venus, the goddess of love. In Ancient Rome, festivals for her were held each spring in April. Flying above her is her son, Cupid. He seems to be aiming his bow and arrow at the three women holding hands on the left side of the painting. These are the Three Graces, who are often shown as Venus’s helpers.

Louise Bourgeois thought of spiders as clever artists. Her giant sculptures celebrate them and also honour her mother, who was a weaver, just like spiders!

Who’s your favourite film star or pop star? If you were an artist, what kinds of pictures would you make of them?

If you’ve ever admired a spiderweb, it’s easy to see that spiders are talented weavers and artists! Similar to the way some artists make beautiful art by sewing or weaving, spiders are able to spin delicate and tricky designs into their webs. Louise Bourgeois loved spiders. She drew, painted and sculpted them throughout her life, but it wasn’t until the artist turned 87 years old that she made her most famous one. This gigantic bronze and steel spider is more than 9 metres (30 ft) high and weighs over 3,658 kilograms (8,000 pounds). That’s as tall as two giraffes and as heavy as a hippopotamus! It is called Maman, which means ‘Mum’ in

Andy Warhol was a big fan of famous people. Some of his most well-known pictures were of the glamorous film star Marilyn Monroe. He made over 70 portraits of her! But each one was different. Warhol created them by first making copies of a black-and-white publicity photograph of the actress. He then coloured each in a different way using a technique called silk screening. This is a way of printing that is sometimes used when businesses want to put the same design on lots of signs or boxes. Warhol liked that idea, and he even called his studio The Factory.

French. On the bottom side of the spider’s belly, there’s a wire sac full of white, marble eggs. These are her babies. When Bourgeois was growing up in France, her family owned a shop that sold and repaired very old and rare antique tapestries. Tapestries are a kind of woven picture that can be hung on a wall. As a kid, she would sometimes help her mother by dyeing cloth or re-drawing some of the sections that were damaged. Bourgeois thought that her mother was clever, helpful, and a good weaver–just like spiders. She made this sculpture to celebrate her mother, who she said was her best friend.

Warhol was called a Pop artist, because he made art from pictures of ‘popular’ things. He loved to make pictures of people and things that everybody could recognize, whether it was a banknote, Elvis Presley or a can of the Campbell’s soup he ate for lunch. He was fascinated by the idea of fame. He once said that everyone in the world could be famous for 15 minutes.

In some versions, he made Marilyn’s hair yellow, her eyeshadow blue and the background orange.

HILMA AF KLINT

Born: 26 October 1862 | From: Solna, Sweden

KNOWN FOR Nature, spirituality, abstract art, scientific discovery

PAINTING IDEAS AND BELIEFS Hilma af Klint was inspired by her spiritual beliefs. She often meditated–when a person sits quietly and relaxes their mind–to get inspiration for the bright colours and symbols in her paintings. What do you see in this painting? Different people may have different answers because this picture is an example of abstract art. That means it doesn’t look like anything we might see in real life. Even though abstract pictures may not look recognizable, an artist’s inspiration can still come from real objects, emotions, and ideas. You may notice that some of the shapes in Klint’s paintings look like flowers. That’s because the artist was also inspired by science and nature. She liked to study plants and made many drawings of flowers. Like a scientist, Klint would make many notes and drawings in notebooks. Her writing helps

us understand the meanings of some of her paintings. In one notebook, she wrote about a group of paintings called The Ten Largest. They are meant to show the different times of a person’s life, from childhood to old age. This painting is one of them. What age do you think this painting shows? The colours in the childhood pictures start out very bright, and the colours for the older ages get softer over time. This picture is painting number 7, and shows adulthood.

A Family of Trees My First Book of Forests Peggy Thomas, with illustrations by Cookie Moon …and for forest friends.

In some families, all the trees look alike.

The trees in this Utah aspen forest look the same because they share one big root system. Each tree is an exact copy of the parent.

Trees are home to millions of creatures. They grow an endless supply of yummy leaves, seeds, and nuts to snack on.

and they take care of you!

A Forest for the Nose

Trees give us the very air we breathe. As they turn sunlight, air, and water into food, they breathe out life-giving oxygen. One fullgrown tree produces enough oxygen for two people. So, take a deep breath and thank a tree!

Great-Granddaddy Forest The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in California, USA is home to some of the oldest trees in the world. Five thousand years old! Golden eagles, ground squirrels and western fence lizards call this forest home.

A Tower of Trees

These trees look alike and share the same root system. Miles wide, this forest is actually one living being! Called the Pando, this forest in Utah is home to elk, ruffed grouse and while turkeys.

This forest is really two apartment buildings in Milan, Italy. People live inside. Wood pigeons, swifts and blackbirds nest in the trees. Bumblebees pollinate flowers, and ladybugs keep pests away.

A read-aloud, poetic introduction to forests for young children that, when unfolded, creates a forest-scape that is as long as a king-size bed! In this first book of forests for the very young, children are invited to experience how trees, like humans, talk to each other, care for each other, share food, and create a home together. The book further unfolds to showcase a lush temperate forest-scape, creating a true visualization of how trees are connected and form forest families. Back panels offer vivid illustrations of diverse forests environments around the world for a more global context, while secondary text offers more detailed, curricular information about tree science and the flora and fauna that rely on forests habitats.

Ballroom Marfa The First Twenty Years Virginia Lebermann and Fairfax Dorn, with Jessica Hundley, Vance Knowles, and Daisy Nam

A vibrant account of Ballroom Marfa’s ground-breaking first two decades of art and music Since its founding in the storied but remote West Texas town of Marfa, Ballroom Marfa has punched above its weight. From one of its debut shows including renowned artist Takashi Murakami, to Elmgreen & Dragset’s now-iconic Prada Marfa installation, to live performances by Sonic Youth and shock-master John Waters, and large-scale commissions from Agnes Denes to Hiroon Mirza, Ballroom’s impact has reverberated far beyond the desert. This book is a kaleidoscopic collection of highlights from the museum’s first two decades, as told by the artists, musicians, curators, and community around this art destination.

Ballroom Marfa was founded in 2003 in Marfa, a remote town of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, to offer the public art across all mediums – from installations to performances, music, film, and dance. Since then, Ballroom has evolved to become not only an internationally recognized, critically hailed art museum, but also a landmark global destination.

overinflated and highly susceptible to collapse. Smith simply had not had the museum-show exposure and did not yet have alphagallery representation. Harsh though the experience of financial loss might have been for would-be investors, the emotional effect on Smith was profound. In our various interviews, Smith is clear-sighted about the negative effects of his sharp rise to fame, and his eventual personal crisis and disillusionment with his artistic process. The expectations were far too high, and he feels the market left him exposed without any way to protect himself or navigate around it. Today, he has started to show works again, albeit very selectively, including a museum show in 2020 at the Parrish Art Museum in the Hamptons. Inspired by his experience, he also founded Serving the People (STP), an arts nonprofit that intends to create a multidisciplinary program free of commercial bias. Lucien’s exposure to a free market, badly distorted by the rush to flip his works, was a painful one. Nonetheless, it proved the catalyst that led him to reinvent himself outside of the mainstream art market. Smith’s price development is a powerful cautionary tale for everyone who thinks that it’s easy to make money in the art market and a warning for all those who “buy with their ears” and rush toward the latest name without reflection and analysis. This book provides the tools to sidestep the same trap.

Representation: From his biography you can immediately see that Jeff Koons is represented by Pace gallery, one of the leading alpha galleries in the world. Previously, he was with Gagosian and has also shown with David Zwirner—all alpha galleries. We immediately know that this artist is a superstar artist. Exhibitions: As with most biographies of artists, this divides his shows into solo exhibitions and group exhibitions. In this case, you can see that he has had Coffins don’t have pockets. solo shows at alpha galleries and at household-name museums, like Ellie Rines, Gallerist the Whitney and Centre Pompidou, plus he participated in group shows in museums like MoMA. Based on our framework, you know that this artist’s works will be expensive. Collections: Often, when you look at the bottom of the CV, you can see which collections, public and private, hold works by the artist. As you can see, Koons’s work is part of some of the most important art collections in the world, including MoMA, the Whitney, and many others. Bibliography: The bibliography section includes a summary of press articles or publications about the artist. This section is often found below or above the collections. In Koons’s case, to no surprise, he has had a lot of press in the leading newspapers globally and books published by the best publishers in the world. Auction Results: The last step is to review auction prices via the LiveArt app. With the worldwide record price for a living artist—$91 million for Rabbit in 2019—Koons clearly shows exceptional auction results. LiveArt will also tell you that he has an extremely healthy set of more than five hundred results on the secondary market.

The spectacular ascent and sharp corrective in Lucien Smith’s early career is a cautionary tale for collectors hoping they’ve discovered the new Basquiat. It illustrates precisely why the wider dynamics of the art market matter and why a wise investor will make decisions based on sound evidence of exhibition history and representation rather than gamble on chatter. Born in 1989, Smith was one of the most hyped artists of the early 2010s. In 2013, he looked unstoppable: Just two years after graduating from the Cooper Union, one of his works sold on the secondary market for nearly $400,000. He was the wunderkind of the art media, and he appeared in Forbes’s “30 Under 30” two years in a row. Yet in 2015, Smith decided to step out of the market and dramatically reduced his gallery shows. Today, many of his works have either been “bought-in” (not sold), or have gone for between $5,000 and $20,000—a dizzying drop from the $400,000 his works once achieved and a fall that bruised a lot of collectors, who ended up carrying a loss on their acquisitions. I am a big admirer of Smith’s work, but a lot of people got far too excited far too early. During 2014, shortly after leaving art school, Smith’s work was massively played up, with investors fighting to get pieces that were selling repeatedly for over $200,000. Within a few short months, by mid-2015, the market had cooled dramatically, and Smith’s prices never reasserted themselves to their former level. A smart investor would have realized that Smith was just at the beginning of his career and that prices over $100,000 were

the trajectory, statistically speaking, becomes very predictable. If an artist is picked up by a top gallery early on, the chances of becoming established among the elite are excellent. If, however, an invitation to show at any of the high-ranked institutions doesn’t arrive within the first five shows, then it is unlikely ever to come. There have been very few rags-to-riches stories. In fact, no more than 240 artists (0.048% of the sample we analyzed) who began exhibiting at low-prestige institutions ever made it to the top.

The primary market is the initial market where art is traded, primarily involving living artists and galleries. This market has a larger number of artists and buyers compared to the secondary market. Private sales are the norm, leading to opaque pricing, small margins, and low liquidity. Most practicing artists operate in this market, and the works sold here usually lack resale value. On the other hand, the secondary market involves the trading of art for at least the second time. Auction houses are the major players in this market, alongside established galleries and dealers with substantial funds and inventories. The secondary market sees fewer artists traded, and the number of potential buyers with significant resources is also smaller. Competition is widespread in the primary market due to a large number of artists trying to sell to a limited number of buyers. Conversely, the secondary market is different, with few artists successfully making it onto the market and fewer

These museums and galleries are crucial because an exhibition at any of Dennis Scholl, Collector them essentially guarantees that the artist will ascend to fame and earn headline prices. The Holy Land is the definition of artistic validation. Outside of the Holy Land, we ended up with individual clusters of small dots, which I call island networks. Island networks are all the little separate institutions that show art but that do not create truly successful artists. They are simply too small and insignificant to influence an artist’s career. Ninetynine percent of all institutions sit somewhere within an island network, and they will never make a real impact at the higher end of the market or change the lives of the artists represented by them. The map shows that there is only one route to success. If an artist is not a part of the Holy Land, then they are stuck in an Island network, with all its limitations. There, the probability Train your eye first by visiting is low that they will ever cross the museums, galleries, auctions, and looking at art books. Because your taste evolves so quickly in the early years of collecting. By looking at a lot of works, you are able to skip many of the early phases where your eye is not developed.

Mapplethorpe Flora The Complete Flowers Robert Mapplethorpe, edited and designed by Mark Holborn, with an introduction by Herbert Muschamp

The definitive collection of Robert Mapplethorpe’s flower photographs in a stunning new edition Robert Mapplethorpe is one of the twentieth century’s most important artists, known for his ground-breaking and provocative work. He studied painting, drawing, and sculpture in Brooklyn in the 1960s and started taking photographs when he acquired a Polaroid camera, in 1970. Beginning in 1973 and until his death in 1989, Mapplethorpe explored the flower with extraordinary dedication, using a range of photographic processes – from Polaroids to dyetransfer color works. In carefully constructed compositions, he captured roses, orchids, snapdragons, daisies, tulips and other species – both common and rare – and forever transformed the way we perceive a classic and familiar subject. The result – a stunning body of work – is collected in this elegant book, back in print in a striking new edition.

Before/After Álvaro Siza and Duccio Malagamba

SANTA MARIA CHURCH AND PARISH CENTRE Marco de Canaveses, Portugal 1990 -2004

The programme of the complex is split into two two-storey buildings (Church and Mortuary Chapel, Auditorium and Catechesis) and a three-storey one (Parish Residence). The three volumes are articulated according to each other and to surrounding buildings in order to define a central Churchyard, resulting from a pre-existing fabric, reinforced by the new volumes. The proposed solution gives to the volume of the Church the role of the unifying pole, leaving to the two remaining volumes the task of approaching the pre-existing scale. The access to the platform where the complex is located is made in the East by a ramp and a wide staircase of two flights and in the West by the existing city streets. The mortuary is directly accessible from the adjacent garden. The floor plan of the church is rectangular and with only one nave, with a maximum depth of 30 m and same width and height (16,5 m).The main access and the altar are located, respectively, in the southwest and northeast extreme of the longitudinal axis of the nave. The span of 3 m wide x 10 m in height of the entrance door is inscribed into a square facade of 17,5 m x 17,5 m, tripartite by advancing the two lateral bodies with a floor size of 6x5 m. The space of the altar is marked by a decrease in width of the nave, due to the inwardly convex and outwardly concave shape of the side wall and the elevation of 0.45 m of its platform in relation to the floor of the nave, and also by a lateral extension with a ceiling height of 5 m. The altar occupies the central position surrounded by lectern and presidential chair, slightly forwarded in the direction of the nave. Two chairs for the scholars or concelebrants are addorsed to the sidewall and aligned with the altar. The Tabernacle is situated on a stone base at the threshold of the Northwest expansion space. The natural lighting of the nave depends on the following architectural elements: - 3 openings 3.5 m wide x 5 m high in the Northwest side wall along the roof with great and variable depth, due to the introduction of a curved double interior wall; - a continuous horizontal opening of 16 m long and 0.5 m high, with sill at 1.3 m above the floor, along the Southeast side wall; - lighting chimney behind the altar, which also illuminates the Mortuary Chapel, the lighting span not being visible; - main entrance, eventually opened. The Mortuary Chapel is located under the floor of the church and at the ground level of the Complex North side. It is directly linked to the Church by stairs and lift. The main entrance is made from the garden at elevation 87.60 mediated by a cloister and its covered wings. From this cloister is also planned an access to the church platform. The height of the chapel and related spaces is of 6 meters. The Baptistery is located near the main entrance occupying the entire height of one of the advanced volumes of the facade. A vestibule for the side entrance and the stairs to the organ and bells occupies the second advanced volume. Vestry, office, confessionals, and meeting room as the lateral extension of the altar, stairs, and lift to access the Mortuary chapel, occupies a volume of rectangular shape of 5x25 m, 5 m height, attached to the body of the Church. The Auditorium and Catechesis develops around a courtyard open to the North, in front of the church facade and as an extension of the churchyard; bordering two sides of this courtyard while the third is occupied by the Parish residence.

American Modern Architecture; Community; Columbus, Indiana Matt Shaw, with photographs by Iwan Baan

The definitive book on one of the foremost modernist cities and architecture destinations in the USA: Columbus, Indiana The midwestern city of Columbus, Indiana, is more than a mecca of modern architecture; it’s an example of how design can help foster a remarkable community. The dozens of buildings and projects by legendary architects – from mid-century titans such as Eero Saarinen and I. M. Pei to contemporary practitioners Deborah Berke and Robert A.M. Stern – remain integral to its urban fabric. This book explores Columbus’s optimistic program of bold new architecture and landscapes, initiated by the legendary industrialist J. Irwin Miller and local leaders, and the generations-long quest to develop the ideal American city through design excellence.

Matt Shaw, a Columbus native, is a writer, editor, and instructor. The former executive editor of The Architect’s Newspaper, his writing has appeared in the New York Times, Architectural Review, Domus, and Icon. Iwan Baan is a photographer whose work focuses on the intersection of architecture and the social fabric and has been published in books and periodicals internationally.

New England Coastal Homes That Tell a Story Mark Hutker, with Kyle Hoepner

Dreamy coastal residences from Martha’s Vineyard to Maine to Maryland, and beyond Architect Mark Hutker and his firm design residential heirlooms deeply rooted in New England vernacular but with a modern sensibility—beach camps with driftwood-hued timber and open-flow rooms; modern, multilevel homes set seamlessly into their landscape; shingle-style dwellings with distilled detailing; and bespoke farmhouses in harmony with tradition but conceived for contemporary living. Through beautiful photography and engaging texts, this book tells the stories of fifteen houses that encapsulate the fantasy of New England coastal summers through a modern perspective.

Mark Hutker took ownership of the firm that would become Hutker Architects in 1985 and has since expanded to four offices across Massachusetts, with seventy employees. He and the firm have received numerous honors and awards, including the Luxe Red Contemporary Architecture award, Boston Magazine’s Best Architect, and several from IFDA New England and American Architecture. The Edith Farnsworth House Architecture, Preservation, Culture Michelangelo Sabatino

The comprehensive story of an icon of modern architecture: the Edith Farnsworth House designed by Mies van der Rohe One of the most famous residences in modern history, a glass and steel marvel that seems to float above its site, the Edith Farnsworth House had been legendary in the public imagination long before it could be widely accessed. This book charts the house’s original design by Mies van der Rohe and periods of neglect, flooding, and new ownership by Lord Peter Palumbo. Now publicly accessible and celebrating twenty years of being owned and administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this icon of modern architecture commissioned by client and patron Edith Farnsworth now gets its due.

Michelangelo Sabatino is an architectural historian, curator, and preservationist. He is Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture where he is the inaugural John Vinci Distinguished Research Fellow and directs the PhD program. He serves on the Board of Directors of Docomomo US. He is author and coauthor of numerous books, including Modern in the Middle: Chicago Houses 1929–75 (Monacelli).

What a Rock Can Reveal Where They Come From And What They Tell Us About Our Planet Written by Maya Wei-Haas, illustrated by Sonia Pulido There’s no such thing as a boring rock!

Some are flashy with pops of pink or glitters of green. Others have swirls and stripes or spots of all sizes. They can be rough or smooth, thin or wide. They can even be sneaky and hide treasure inside.

What can a rock’s colors reveal?

Even rocks you think look plain, like a little gray pebble with no sparkle or shine, has gone on a big adventure. Some come from deep underground, while others have raced through space.

Rocks are made from a rainbow of beautiful building blocks called minerals.

GRANITE Granite is a gray or pink rock that can be found all over the world. Just like eclogite, it’s covered in spots. Each patch of color is a different mineral.

They grow in nature, often underground, and come in crystals of all different colors and shapes. Some rocks are made from just one mineral. Others have a mix of many minerals that you can see as tiny speckles or big spots.

So don’t let a simple stone trick you. Every rock you’ll ever find has an exciting story to tell. Let’s discover how to read them!

Hornblende

Muscovite Garnet

Omphacite

Orthoclase feldspar Plagioclase feldspar

Kyanite

Quartz

Smoky quartz

ECLOGITE This special rock is very hard to find. Each color—bright green and red and sometimes specks of blue and white—is a different mineral. Which one do you like best? 4

5

Let’s meet some minerals!

Open a treasure chest and you might find a rainbow of sparkling minerals hiding inside— emeralds, rubies, sapphires, and diamonds galore! For thousands of years these gems were used in crowns and necklaces for kings and

queens. But minerals aren’t just pretty; they can be useful too. Quartz is used in clocks, mica makes many paints sparkle, and calcite is used in chalk! We’ve found thousands of minerals, but there are many more left to discover.

10

Where can you find rocks? CALCITE This one has a bubbly personality. Add a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar, and it fizzes!

The rocks that make up our planet form in layers like a cake. All of the world’s plants and animals, including you and me, live on Earth’s outer layer called the crust. While the crust may look thin, it’s actually quite thick. We’ve never dug a hole deep enough to reach the next layer below. And that layer is even thicker!

Rocks are everywhere! You can find them in parks near the flowers and trees, or in playgrounds under slides and swings. You might even find them outside your front door, beneath leaves or along garden paths. The more you look around, the more rocks you’ll see. Even if you don’t spot many stones, there’s always rock deep under your feet—whether you’re hiking up a mountain or strolling down a street. That’s because Earth is mostly made of rock.

DIAMOND They dazzle and shine in expensive jewelry, but diamonds are also so hard they can be used to drill into solid rock. MAGNETITE One type of this mineral has a curious talent: it can attract many metals, making it a natural magnet! You can find bits of magnetite by swishing a magnet in sand.

VIVIANITE This trickster can be clear as glass when first pulled from the ground. But light makes it slowly turn dark blue, green, or even black.

11

AZURITE Ancient Egyptians and famous painters like Leonardo da Vinci loved to use this bright blue mineral to make beautiful paint or dyes.

Crust

Hidden under the crust is a rocky layer called the mantle. Some of the minerals in this layer are surprisingly bright colors, like the shimmery green of the mineral olivine.

SALT Did you know that the salt you put on your food is a mineral? It grows in itty-bitty cube-shaped crystals.

Upper mantle

Lower mantle

CROCOITE Is it a cactus? No, but this hard-to-find, bright-red mineral is super spiky. You’ve been warned!

Below the mantle is the deepest layer called the core, which is mostly made of the metal iron. The core’s outer edges are liquid, and the center is a solid ball. The core is buried so deep, no one has ever seen it. FLUORITE This mineral glows neon blue under a black light. Some kinds even keep shining for a while after you turn off the light. Outer core

RHODOCHROSITE This collection of crystals is an exciting and unusual way for this mineral to form. While it might look like bubble gum, it’s way too hard to chew!

Some minerals like hot, cramped places deep underground, while others sit on Earth’s surface. Minerals can mix in many ways that give us clues about where they came from. What minerals have you seen? Can you guess their stories?

TOURMALINE This mineral grows as tall sticks in spectacular colors that make it look like candy. One type even has the bright pinks and greens of a delicious watermelon slice.

12

Inner core

13

Some rocks tell stories of big blasts and booms

Have you ever found a completely black rock? It might be basalt. This rock looks plain but comes from one of Earth’s most amazing events: a volcanic eruption that oozes super-hot, melted— molten—rock, also known as lava.

14

15

Some rocks reveal adventures from mountain to sea

Volcanic blasts can fling lava sky high, lighting up the night like nature’s fireworks. Some eruptions are so powerful they can knock over trees and “boom” so loud you can hear them from miles away.

While stones might seem tough, they don’t last forever. As mountains grow, wind and water also wear them down, causing some rocks to crumble. Rain sweeps the rocky rubble into rivers, carrying the stony bits down steep slopes. Rivers are nature’s greatest rock collectors—big rocks, little rocks, red rocks, tan rocks. As the water flows downstream, these rocky bits tumble

IGNEOUS ROCKS Rocks that cool from magma or lava are called igneous rocks. You can find one type of igneous rock called basalt all over the world.

and break into smaller pieces, becoming little pebbles, gravel, and even grains of sand. Smaller streams join the rushing river, feeding its waters and drawing in rocks from near and far. If you follow a river long enough, you’ll always end up at the sea. This is where many small stony bits collect in sandy beaches after their big journey.

Some lava can flow like rivers, glowing bright yellow, orange, and red.

As the lava cools, its glow fades and darkens to form solid rock, like the black rock basalt.

HOW DO VOLCANOES ERUPT? It all starts deep underground when small bits of Earth’s mantle and crust melt to form magma, which is a sizzling-hot stony soup. This “soup” oozes upward and collects in super-hot blobs that press on the ground above. Suddenly, the surface splits with a booming blast. That’s an eruption!

16

A stunningly illustrated, informative introduction to the wonders of rocks and minerals and what they can tell us about our planet Award-winning science writer and geologist Maya Wei-Haas introduces young readers to the fascinating world of rocks through the art of observation. Starting with a friendly question-and-answer format, she explores the diversity of rocks and minerals and how a rock’s shape, color, or texture help to tell the stories of how it was formed, where it comes from, and the incredible journeys it has had. This hands-on introduction reveals how rocks are time capsules of our planet’s past, recording the thrilling events that once built Earth’s incredible geology.

Maya Wei-Haas i s an award-winning science writer with a PhD in Earth Science. She was previously a staff reporter at National Geographic and an Assistant Editor of Science and Innovation at Smithsonian.com. Now she writes for a variety of publications, including The New York Times and Science. This is her first children’s book. Sonia Pulido is an artist living in a seaside village close to Barcelona.
