Celebrating RSW Artists

19th October to 10th November

The RSW

There are a number of artist societies in Scotland where artists, who have been honoured to be elected as a professional member of that society, are entitled to use the society letters after their name.

The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (known as the ‘RSW’) is an artist-led charitable society whose aim is to promote the art of watercolour painting in Scotland and beyond.

Established in 1876, there are currently over 120 RSW elected artist members and it has been honoured with Royal patronage throughout its history. To be elected a RSW artist, each artist has to be nominated by peers, submit examples of their work and a CV whereafter a vote is held meaning any election to the society is a recognition of their work by other distinguished artists.

Scottish watercolour painting has long been characterised by a freedom of approach, a bold confidence in handling its materials and a robust way with colour. The practice has continued to evolve with the advent of new pigments such as water-based acrylic paint and inks, in addition to the acceptance of a variety of materials, the use of collage techniques, and of different papers.

The RSW is in every sense a 21st Century exhibiting Society, always capable of innovation and surprise. Whilst RSW accredited artists are hugely adept in watercolour techniques, many choose to work in other mediums in their day to day practice.

This exhibition at the Strathearn Gallery is a celebration of the RSW accolade and will show current paintings from a selection of invited RSW artists. While our exhibition will include work by many firm favourites, we are also looking forward to introducing paintings by some RSW artists who are new to the gallery.

Pat Semple (1939 - 2021)

Within this exhibition, we are honoured to be exhibiting a collection of paintings by the acclaimed artist, the late Pat Semple RSW. Born in Kintyre, Pat attended Edinburgh College of Art in the 1950s and went on to have an incredibly successful career, spanning over 40 years, as both a professional artist and teacher.

Pat felt so honoured to be an elected member of the RSW that she bequeathed her own works and personal collection to the society. Her intriguing, expressive works are focussed on spirituality and the human need to find meaning by searching for patterns and symbols in their lives. Pat too, looked to find this through her work, using oil, watercolour and charcoal and capturing in some way, her own personal and spiritual experiences.
