Thousands of dogs and cats killed at the Yulin dog meat festival 2016.

YULIN Time to see them, Time to help them, Time to make it stop Just remember your pet, Would you ever swap? Throughout the year we will keep fighting against this festival. There are many ways to get involved please do something that suits you and stops the pain of these terrified creatures.

Is the PETA always doing what is best for animals? Greetings canines everywhere. Many of you will be aware of the row that arose because of the film, ‘A Dog’s Purpose’. The PETA released a video that seemed to show a German Shepard being forced to do a stunt that he was not happy with. Seeing the full footage, it becomes clear that the dog was fully protected at all times and that he just didnt feel comfortable doing the stunt of jumping in the pool from a new position which he was not use to. Then we have the voice off camera saying ‘just throw him in’. It is extrememly unlikely that this was anything but a joke from a person on set who had nothing to do with the dog. I find it strange that they waited so long before releasing any footage and obviously wanted to cause as much box office problems for tthe film as possible. I have appeared in a film or two myself (not professionally) and I know that if I am asked to do something I dont want to, I just dont do it and its up to the humees to find something that I do want to do. The PETA does alot for animals and we support them in the magazine

3 whole heartedly, but should they be trying to get rid of dogs from film altogether? If dog’s lose their voice in film and TV, if they lose their platform in the public eye, It makes it easier for bad things to happen to them on a global scale. China has become a main player in the film and TV industry. They are not known for their great love of dogs, though they do have a lot of cooking recipes for them. They still allow horrible things in China, like the Yulin dog and cat meat festival. It seems to me that dogs are being displayed as expendable in motion pictures with Chinese money backing them. Take for instance - ‘Free state of Jones’. The dogs in that were loyal to their masters and although they were hunting attack dogs, they still probably loved their nasty owners and would have died for them. Because the dogs were on the side of the baddies in this case, should it not matter that they are killed and eaten? The movie treated eating the dogs as very matter of fact. An oppinion that some of Asia would like to see the Western World adopt.

ing after a film that tries to show how much they make a difference to our lives. There is no logic to the current attack on ‘A Dog’s Purpose’, I intend to investigate more and will be back next issue with a comment from the PETA. After all, they are one of the few organisations that most of us who care about the welfare of animals follow blindly - should we really do this without knowing all the facts or when the facts don’t quite add up? is there another agenda here, one that is part of a propaganda against dogs, that will see their support diminished? That will keep them out of films and out of mind allowing the increase in cruelty to continue around teh World/ I like Spielberg, my mistress interviewed him a few years back and he is not a man who would tolerate cruelty to dogs on his set.

A Dog’s Purpose is well worth watching for any dog lover. But if you dont like dogs, you may not understand it. People who dont have dogs miss out on so much - they dont get that what we dogs can offer is something so powIt makes more sense to me to make a fuss erful and beautiful that it can’t be found anyabout showing dogs as throw away commod- where else. People who say they don’t even ties that have no heart or soul, rather than go- like dogs - are not to be trusted.

A Dog’s Purpose is covered in the March issue of Movie Central.

5 WAYS TO SHOW LOVE THAT YOUR DOG CAN UNDERSTAND Dogs are a man (and woman)'s best friend: loyal, lovely and enthusiast. We love them so much that we spoil them with treats, toys, fancy collars and comfy beds to show him how special he is to you. Sure he appreciates all that stuff, but in order to express love for your pup there are few ways that he'll make him understand how precious he is for you

3. Just Tell You Love him A recent study published in Science found that dogs understand some human speech. They experiment that dogs were happier when they heard not just a praising tone, but words of praise, as well. This suggests that they can listen to our tone of voice as interpret meaning from words. So sometimes just tell him how you feel and he'll get the message.

1. Ear Rubs Make Your Dog High On Love 4. Train Your Dog Scratching behind your dog’s ears is the best cuddle for them. That’s because dog’s ears are full of nerve endings that send impulses all through the body, inducing the release of endorphins. These hormones act as painkillers and are natural “drugs” that are also released when dogs feel love.

2. Feed Your Dog By Hand Feeding your dog by hand shows your dog that you are a food provider and reduces food aggression. It also creates an intimate experience and a strong bond between you and your dog. As your dog grows older, the need to feed by hand may decrease, but offering treats during training is still a great way to show your pup that you care.

Training the dog will increase your bond: positive reinforcement is an excellent way to communicate your love. Whether that’s food, praise, or play, your dog will come to see you as a provider of the things he loves the most. He’ll see that when you both work to make each other happy, you’re both showing your love for each other.

5. Learn What Your Dog Is Saying Understanding your dog is very important: many dogs don’t feel comfortable to be hugged or meet other people. Dogs can express a lot through body language if you know how dogs communicate. Understanding him will reduce the number of times they feel stressed and work on making them feel at ease. He will feel understood and loved, increasing his trust for you.

5 But how do you know if is mutual love? Here some dogs ways to say “I love you”. 1 # Your dog tries to be always close to you In your lap, sleeping with you leaning against you or following you room to room, ... it’s clear your dog is attached to you.

2 # Your dog gazes into your eyes When you and your dog share a long look, your dog is “hugging you with his eyes,” according to Brian Hare, a professor at Duke University who studies canine cognition and nothing is better than a hug to show love.

3 # Your dog excitedly greets you

upset or not feeling well and respond with affection. They might give you licks or rest their head or paws on some part of your body.

5 # Your dog yawns when you yawn

Have you ever yawned after witnessing another person’s yawn? This contagious yawning is unique to only a few species, and man’s best friend is one of them. If your dog yawns in response to your yawns, 4 # Your dog ‘reads’ you and reacts accordingly it means that his affection for you enables him to With a close bond, your dog will sense if you are empathise with you. Does your pup jump up, wag his tail and barely seem able to contain himself when you arrive home? If so, that’s a sure sign of affection.

More than one million people worldwide have signed #BeCrueltyFree petitions calling on their governments to ban cruel cosmetics. In conjunction with intensive political lobbying and public campaigning by HSI and others, this pressure has so far driven 36 countries or regions around the world to introduce animal testing or sales bans in their cosmetics laws – including the European Union, Israel, India, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, and most recently

Bring Your Dog to Yoga

23rd March – 27th April The Light Yoga Space, London ‘Bring Your Dog to Yoga’ is an exciting new experimental yoga course running for the first time ever at the Light Yoga Space. The yoga on this course is strictly for the humans, the pooches are just invited along because we love hanging out with them. Anyone who practices yoga and has a dog knows that as soon as we get down on our mats our pooches get excited. They love us practicing yoga as much as we do and we get lots of furry, sloppy kisses and ear nuzzles to prove it. The level will accommodate both beginners as well as yoga practitioners with some experience. This course is for anyone who wants to learn and practice real yoga, in a beautiful space, with their furry friends to keep them company. There will be space for 6 humans with pooches (1 dog each) plus 6 more dog-loving humans who don’t have dogs themselves but want the doggy company.

Farm dog saves a Canterbury man’s life from a bull attack Sunday 29th January - Bear, a 5-year-old German Shepherd, protected his owner, Dave Duthie, in an attack from a charging bull on a Canterbury farm. The farmer was checking the cattle’s water when one of his bulls attacked, ramming him into a nearby deer fence. Bear immediately bounded in and attacked the crazed 500-kilogram bull, but the bull flung the dog aside and threw him into the fence. Duthie was left trapped between the fence and a dense hedge. He desperately tried to escape, but the bull, which weighed about the same as a small car, charged again. Despite the injuries the dog tried to attack again the bull. As Bear did it, Duthie was able to scramble over the fence,

7 most famous Edinburgh dogs Secret Edinburgh: An Unusual Guide’ author Hannah Robinson presents her pick of historic dogs which she believes could rival Edinburgh’s beloved Greyfriars Bobby for heroics and appeal.

1) GREYFRIARS BOBBY

James Clerk Maxwell, an eminent physicist, found in is Irish terrier, Toby, an unusual collegue. You can see Toby near Maxwell’s feet in Alexander Stoddart’s sculpture on George Street. Maxwell used to explain his theories to Toby, and examine his eyes with a homemade ophthalmoscope to try and understand colour blindness. Look carefully and you will see, just above Toby’s head, some missing rivets in the chair upholstery: this demonstrates the second law of thermodynamics, which is, as Toby would have known, that things fall apart (especially when chewed).

3) BUM

4) CUILLIN

6) DOBBLER

Hidden away in a corner of Edinburgh Castle is the Cemetery for Soldiers’ Dogs. It’s a little walled garden just above where the One O’Clock gun is fired – although it can only be viewed from above, you can make out the headstones. Faithful residents include Dobbler, who was buried here in 1893 after having trekked across half of Asia and Africa with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

7) BEAUTY Robert Louis Stevenson wrote, ‘You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.’ His own pet Skye Terrier, Cuillin, is commemorated in a bronze statue of Stevenson as a young boy outside Colinton Parish Church, where he used to visit his grandfather, a minister there.

5) MAIDA

Sir Walter Scott was another great literary lover of dogs, and they frequently appear in portraits of the writer. There is even a breed of dog, Dandie Dinmont Terriers, named after a character that appears in Scott’s novel, Guy Mannering. You can see Scott’s favourite dog - Maida, a wolf and Deerhound cross, named after the Napoleonic battle curling at the foot of the Scott Monument statue.

The Great Lafayette, in his time more famous than Houdini, loved his dog Beauty so much that he literally fed her to death. In a dramatic theatrical accident (of which more in the book) he died four days later and they are buried together beneath the same flamboyant monument in Piershill cemetery.

We Didn’t Domesticate Dogs. They Domesticated Us. For the National Geographic in the story of how the dog came in from the cold and onto our sofas, we tend to give ourselves a little too much credit.
