Theatre Doctor Faustus announces three-week extension and full casting

KIT HARINGTON

His recent death in Game of Thrones gave Kit the time to do more feature films and theatre. His popularity on GOT seemed to reach its height after he was stabbed to death in the last series. He is not due to appear much (except dead) in the new series, fans will have to wait till the series after to really see him in action again, or so we believe. Whether it is Jon Snow who is so beloved or Kit Harington himself - only the next couple of years will tell. You can see him live in The Jamie Lloyd Company’s Doctor Faututs’. Jamie Lloyd said “Kit Harington is one of the most dynamic young actors around and he’s eager for a new challenge. This version of this legendary play combines the very best of Marlowe’s text with thrilling work by Colin Teevan, which replaces the notorious central acts, longsuspected to be of spurious origin. I am excited to be presenting our company’s first production at the Duke of York’s, whilst The Maids with Uzo Aduba, Zawe Ashton and Laura Carmichael runs at Trafalgar Studios.” Kit Harington trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating 2008 Before acting, Harington originally wanted to become a journalist, a cameraman or a war correspondent. While still at drama school, he landed the role of Albert in the National Theatre’s adaptation of War Horse. The play won two Olivier Awards, and gained Harington a great deal of recognition. He was later cast in his second play Posh, a dark ensemble comedy about upper-class men attending Oxford University. You can see Kit in the flesh from 9th April to the 25th June.

Due to unprecedented demand, a 3 week extension is announced today for The Jamie Lloyd Company’s production of Doctor Faustus. Full casting has also been announced with Jenna Russell taking the role of Mephistopheles. Jade Anouka (Wagner), Tom Edden (Good Angel), Danielle Flett (Valdes), Brian Gilligan (Cornelius), Forbes Masson (Lucifer), Craig Stein (Evil Angel) and ensemble member Gabby Wong join Kit Harington. This anarchic production of Doctor Faustus will run at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London, from 9th April 2016. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, Christopher Marlowe’s masterwork, with two acts written by Colin Teevan, is now booking until Saturday 25th June. With Teevan’s darkly comic scenes replacing the extant middle acts (widely believed not to have been written by Marlowe), the story of this 400-year-old play will be transported to a celebrity-obsessed society of greed and instant gratification, offering a fresh perspective that chimes with our times. Faustus makes a pact with the Devil, selling his soul in return for the ability to perform anything he pleases with the power of black magic. This fatal decision catapults him into an intoxicating world of celebrity, as he becomes a world-renowned conjuror, international heartthrob and friend of the rich, famous and powerful. But what is the cost of his insatiable thirst for wealth and fame? The production will be designed by Soutra Gilmour, with lighting by Jon Clark, and music and sound by Ben and Max Ringham. Movement direction is by Polly Bennett, with fights by Kate Waters. Kit’s most recent stage credit was in Posh at the Royal Court Theatre. He also played the part of Albert in War Horse at the Olivier National Theatre. “I have been away from the theatre for six years,” Kit said, “so the combination of Colin Teevan’s inventive version of Marlowe’s extraordinary play in the hands of the visionary director Jamie Lloyd all felt like the perfect reason to come back.” As with The Jamie Lloyd Company’s previous productions, all tickets for Monday performances will be £15. Some of these will be made available through a special outreach scheme, targeted at schools and first-time theatregoers. The remainder will be released monthly to the public each month, and will be available online or at the Duke of York’s box office.

BEDTIME STORY creatures, human he supposed. There had been no sign of Gabriel and sadly he had run away from the noisy traffic Simeon on the and the people who refused to take any notice of him. Once he had discovered the Thames and that people weren’t use Thames. to seeing a small cat walk on it, he had succeeded in gain-

Gabriel, the angel, awoke on a cloud high above London at precisely eight o’clock in the morning. He had an uneasy feeling as he tried to fluff up the plump whiteness which billowed around him. A piece of the cloud crumbled in his fingers and he suddenly realised that it had begun to disintegrate at the edges. He stood up and looked at it more closely. Apparently, sometime during the night or early morning, the cloud had lost interest in it’s normal position in the sky and decided to dissolve, intending to reform itself elsewhere. As most clouds spend much of their time dreaming, it forgot to inform Gabriel. He could have fallen through and landed on top of a London building in the middle of rush hour.

The cloud apologised in it’s lazy way and continued to evaporate. Gabriel knew that he should have stuck with a pink cloud, they were far more reliable, always trying to please. In fact on reflection he remembered why he hadn’t stayed on a pink cloud. The last one had kept waking him up every half hour or so to see if he wanted anything. Gabriel called over to his kitten, Simeon and was appalled to find only a small hole in the clouds lining. Simeon had fallen to Earth. “Everything all right?” Asked the cloud. “No, Simeon has slipped through this hole. I’ll have to go down and retrieve him.” Gabriel prepared to float down. ‘Shame I didn’t have a silver lining, that would have held him” the cloud said sweetly. Gabriel looked at him and began the long float down. “Just a little sky humour”, the cloud called after him. “Oh well, I’ll wait here shall I? Hello?”

ing their attention. The cheers enthralled him as he patted the fishes out of the water, although his fur had become wet and looked decidedly grey. Then he caught a glimpse of Gabriel’s face in the crowd and leapt out onto the river wall. Several people stepped back as he started to purr, others looked around for the cause of the noise, not believing it could come from such a small creature. A man close by stuck his fingers in his ears to cut out the pneumatic drill which seemed to be slicing through his mind. Gabriel smiled and walked over to Simeon. The fur was nearly dry now and had returned to it’s usual royal purple colour. He scooped the kitten up and stroked his ear, oblivious to the comments around him. The angel looked thoughtfully at the pedestrians surrounding him in quiet disbelief and wondered what he should do. Tell them he was an angel and there was nothing to fear? Pretend they both from a circus? Disappear and leave them to work it out? Make them all believe it was an illusion? MIAOW. It was so loud that one of the onlookers fainted! In that moment Gabriel had returned Simeon to the sky determined to find a more reliable cloud to rest on next time. The humans would just have to make up their own minds as to what they had witnessed. He suspected that most would think it was a trick. Simeon snuggled against his master’s neck, but he was already planning his next visit to Earth. Susanda FDV

Gabriel made himself invisible so that he wouldn’t frighten any Earthlings. He landed on the pavement in Fleet Street as people hurried past him. Quickly disguising himself as a city gentleman he allowed himself to be seen and began asking passers-by immediately if they had seen a purple kitten that purred as loudly as a Ferrari engine. The response he received was less than flattering as he made his way back and forth down the road. If only Simeon would miaow, Gabriel was sure that he would hear that. After about half an hour, a despondent angel made his way along the embankment calling for his pet. His attention was suddenly arrested by a large crowd of people looking over onto the river. They were cheering and laughing. Gabriel felt his heart soar and using his winged feet he rushed over to join them. Half way across the Thames he could see Simeon, gaily dancing on the water and flipping fish into the air with his swift paws before letting them fall harmlessly back into the water. It was his first time on Earth, he had woken to find himself surrounded by strange

What is the difference between Home School, Flexi-School and School? IN our family we have tried all three methods and we are currently doing Flexi-school. One of the most important parts of growing up is socialising with your peers, especially between the ages of 5 and 8. However, if you live in an area where Home School is difficult as the events and support are so far away, then flexi-schooling has to be the way to go. This allows your child access to other children, play dates and still gives you some time to give extra coverage in topics they may find hard or skills like music that they want to pursue.

Home School

It is everyone’s right in the UK to school their own children. Home schooling is on the rise. Children do not attend school at all but they can still take exams and there is now a wealth of support groups and organised activities for them to take part in. You are completely on your own, at present there is no aid from the government if you home school unless your child has special needs, in which case it will depend on which council you have.

Flexi-School

Requires an agreement with the head of the school that the child may flexi school. This is also on the rise. A school in Chelmsford now say they have 50% flexi-schoolers. However, there are still places like Kent that do not even seen to have heard of flexi-schooling. ‘The child shall not be taken to have failed to attend regularly at the school by reason of his absence from the school (a) with leave” Section 444 (3)The term ‘leave’ is defined as: “In this section ‘leave’, in relation to a school, means leave granted by any person authorised to do so by the governing body or proprietor of the school.” Section 444(9) Basically, if you have the head’s permission for specific days to effectively home school or take on trips, you cannot be marked as absent or fined for not being there. This is the most complicated as it does rely on a great deal of co-operation with the school. Most theatrical schools have been running a version of this for some time - if they send a child for an audition in term time or the child is playing a part, such as ‘Harry Potter’ The child obviously needs to be away from the school environment.

School

If your child misses a day, they are marked absent. You may not take them away in school term. To do so may cause a fine. Their attendance record can count against

them (if it is patchy) in later schools and colleges. Difficult if they have suffered a lot of illnesses or have an ongoing condition or there have been problems in the family. Parents have many reasons for taking a child out of school. 1. They are not learning 2. Bullying 3. Behavioural Problems 4. The school is not very good 5. They want the child to be more individual. 6. They want more freedom with the management of their child and the reasons go on. Home schooling is unregulated so apart from letting the council know you are taking your child out of school, there is nothing else you have to do. Though some councils may say they want to visit and see your work plan, there is no legal requirement for you to allow them.

Attitude towards home schooling from other parents.

There is a great deal of resentment towards home-schooled children from parents who do normal school. The resentment seems to stem from the fact that by making a different choice for their child, the parents that send their children to school feel that the home-schooler parent has effectively said. School is a bad choice and you have made it, caring less about your children than I do about mine. Whereas, no home schooling parent is actually thinking that. This has had the knock on effect of making home-schoolers shy of outsiders. The support web sites are sometimes hard to get into, until they are sure that you are genuinely interested in home-school and not in criticising their choices. No qualifications are required to teach your own children in this country. Some home-schoolers may not feel completely confident in educating their child all the way to college level, but most feel capable to do it from an early age to about 10 or eleven. Time is a huge consideration. Finding the time to educate, finding the money to pay for books, lunches, pencils, writing books. But the rewards are huge. To help us continue to protect and support children and families across the UK, it has committed to raising at least £60,000 and will be donating 20p for every paid subscription to the NSPCC – rising to £2 if you subscribe for a year.” All content is approved by education and children’s media experts some of which has been created especially by Azoomee in conjunction with industry leaders, including BAFTA Award-winning production companies ArthurCox and Complete Control. New users are automatically given a free 15-day trial. At the end of this period they can keep using the premium features of the app by paying a monthly subscription of £4.99, which they can cancel at any time.

Additionally, Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen showcased a collection dripped in old Hollywood glamour and created a dreamlike feel to the pieces. Butterflies and floral prints, lips and lipsticks, and pocket-watches were see throughout offering notions of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in the modern world. These imaginative pieces would look beautiful paired with the Loft in Cream. McQueen also showcased leather trenches with feminine details, the perfect accompaniment to the Electra Cruiser Glam Punk 3i. The What on Earth? Wallbook Timeline of British History The most detailed children’s timeline of Great Britain ever produced A new timeline featuring the complete history of Great Britain is to be unveiled for the first time this weekend at a children's literature festival being launched by the National Trust. With over 1,000 captions and illustrations, the new timeline takes readers on a visually exhilarating journey through the ages: From the dinosaurs, to the Battle of Hastings, Henry VIII’s Reformation, Oliver Cromwell’s Civil War, George Stephenson’s Rocket, the invention of the internet by Sir Tim Berners-Lee…and beyond! Developed in conjunction with the National Trust, the What on Earth? Wallbook Timeline of British History is designed for all ages. A 2-metre long timeline unfolds to reveal all of the Kings and Queens, famous battles, the heroes of science, art and culture as well as iconic national buildings and monuments. Every moment is displayed in chronological order using beautiful illustrations, each one painstakingly drawn by What on Earth? illustrator Andy Forshaw. At the back of the book newspaper-style reports provide a companion narrative with a crossword, letters-to-the-editor and a multiple-choice quiz. The finishing touch is a handy pocket magnifier making it ideal for curious children, parents and grandparents to enjoy together. “This Wallbook wonderfully brings to life how places and people connect through time and history – it is exciting to see how the special places we look after have played their part in the compelling narrative of our national story,” said Daniel Dodds, the National Trust’s Director of Communications. The books author Christopher Lloyd says, “As children we are taught about historical moments in total isolation of each other. One week we are finding out how Stonehenge was constructed, the next about Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the globe, before jumping forward to

life in a World War 1 trench! We then leave school with a detailed knowledge of lots of specific moments – but absolutely no idea when or how these events fit together to form our collective history. “This book contextualises all of those key moments that, together, have shaped the story of Great Britain. At a glance, for instance, children can see what came before Thomas Becket’s murder, what came after, and what else was happening around the same time, giving them a broader and more complete understanding of the events and struggles that have created the Britain we live in today.” The Wallbook Time of British History is priced at £12.99 and will be available at Waterstones, Amazon or online at www.whatonearthbooks.com from mid April 2016. It will be unveiled at the Wray Castle Children's Book Festival which runs this weekend in Cumbria to celebrate 150 years of Beatrix Potter. Christopher Lloyd will present the new timeline using an 8m long giant edition at the festival on Friday and Saturday this week.

The books also include anatomically correct illustrations of models built specifically for the series. Every dinosaur fact has been verified by multiple awardwinning palaeontologist Dean R. Lomax. THE SERIES LAUNCHES WITH FOUR BOOKS: What’s so Special about Stegosaurus? Stegosaurus (STEG-oh-SAW-russ) survived with a body almost as big as a bus, a head the size of a horse and a brain the size of a walnut. Read on to find out just how this bizarre combination worked! Discover how fast Stegosaurus could move with the Speed-o-Meter, how terrifying it was on the Scary Scale, and which of today's animals it most resembles, in this fully illustrated book. What’s so Special about Ankylosaurus? As one of the most heavily armoured dinosaurs and built like a walking tank, Ankylosaurus (an-KIE-loh-SAWruss) was well protected from the hungriest predators… except for its one weak spot. Discover how fast Ankylosaurus could move with the Speed-o-Meter, how terrifying it was on the Scary Scale, and which of today's animals it most resembles, in this fully illustrated book. What’s so Special about Tyrannosaurus rex? Find out how Tyrannosaurus rex (tie-RAN-oh-SAW-russ rex) earned the title ‘King of the Dinosaurs’. One of the

most effective killing machines ever to walk on Earth, its jaw was strong enough to crush a car – had cars been invented! Discover how fast Tyrannosaurus rex could move with the Speed-o-Meter, how terrifying it was on the Scary Scale and munch, munch more! Review: These are very entertaining and enjoyable books. The drawings give the dinosaurs a new kind of character, you can see from the picture below. the T Rex almost seems to be smiling and just look at his feathers. We saw two of the books and presumably they all follow the same pattern as the two we saw did. What’s so special about Coelophysis? One of the oldest dinosaurs discovered to date, Coelophysis (SEE-low-FY-sis) is also one of the most thoroughly researched, as thousands of fossils were unearthed together in one ‘bone bed’. Discover how fast Coelophysis could move with the Speed-o-Meter, how terrifying it was on the Scary Scale, and which of today's animals it most resembles, in this fully illustrated book. Nicky Dee's passion for all things prehistoric developed whilst creating epic exhibitions centred around life-sized dinosaurs. Nicky Dee caught the dinosaur bug and now devotes her time to writing about dinosaurs and sharing her passion for these giant creatures. Her desire to give children the most up to date information in a fun and engaging way led to the creation of the series, which spans the 180 million years when dinosaurs ruled the world! 13 Tidy Books - designers of bookcases and storage solutions for kids - is now on Crowdcube. London, March 8th, 2016 - Tidy Books announced today that it is raising funds via an equity crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube to continue its international expansion. The award-winning company is setting out to raise £150,000 on Crowdcube to revamp its ecommerce platform in a drive to build customer loyalty and transform Tidy Books into an iconic family brand. Founded in 2004, the first Tidy Books product was an innovative front-facing bookcase that helps children to easily find the books they want to read. The Tidy Books range now includes the Tidy Books Box, a sturdy portable book box that can be moved from room to room (or garden or grandparents house!) and the Bunk Bed Buddy, a slimline bookshelf for kids who sleep on the top bunk. Geraldine Grandidier, a mum of two and founder of Tidy Books, says: ‘I designed my first product after watching my four-year-old daughter struggling to find her favourite book on the bookcase. I realized how illogical the traditional bookcase design was and decided to make a bookcase that made sense to kids. That’s the ethos behind everything I create - making products that children are drawn to and enjoy using. I want to foster their sense of independence and inspire their love of books and reading.’

Along with practicality, Tidy Books children’s furniture is also made with design-conscious parents in mind. The traditional-style products fit effortlessly into the home and will be joined later this year by a new range of coordinating colours. Two new innovative products are also in development for launch in 2016/7. Suitable for ages six months to eight years, Tidy Books products come with eco-friendly credentials - they’re made with sustainable FSC-certified limewood, finished with a virtually odour free lacquer and delivered flatpacked to cut fuel and packaging. To date, Tidy Books has achieved product sales of £3m+ via online sales and through big-name retailers such as John Lewis. The company has a direct presence in five key markets - the UK, US, France, Germany and Italy and its products are also distributed in South Africa.

How many to change that light bulb?

How many cats does it take to change a light bulb? None, they don’t need to, they can see in the dark. How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb? Luxury Living

www.lisbonplazahotel.com Refuge and character in a boutique hotel in Lisbon old town.

Hotel Lisboa Plaza Situated in a small street parallel to the most cosmopolitan artery of the capital, Avenida da Liberdade, a boulevard that would put Paris to shame, the four star Hotel Lisboa Plaza is a cosy spot right in the heart of the city. Inaugurated in April 1954, the Lisbon Plaza has always been looked after by the same family. The informal atmosphere leads to the certainty that you are arriving at a friend’s house. No-one can imagine that beyond the stylised façade of this unit that the hustle and bustle of the city go frenetically on just a few steps away. The care of the service and the reconquered well-being lend the certainty that the great pleasures in Life actually derive from small gestures. If you don't want to enjoy taking the stroll down the Avenida da Liberdade into the heart of the city at Rossio, then there is a Metro station (Avenida) less than a minute from the hotel. If you want culture then there is a theatre just a very short stroll away. Designed as place of distinction in the busy Lisbon life of the 1950’s, the Lisboa Plaza reconciles modernity and intimacy. Designed by Lucínio Cruz, the original features are characterised by convenient, ingenious solutions. Revitalized by Graça Viterbo, the Lisboa Plaza brings to mind the memories of private houses. Because of this harmony between the work of this national creator alongside attentive service, the Lisboa Plaza is regarded as a classic contemporary Lisbon hotel business. The hotel provides 94 rooms rooms of various sizes and types, including 12 junior suites, affording to great accommodation flexibility. The rooms and suites reflect the atmosphere experienced in Portuguese homes. Alongside the hotel bar, smokers can enjoy a pleasant space dedicated to them. Also worthy of mention is the 'Business Center' where the guests have access to computing equipment free-ofcharge with Internet connection. This has its own area and is private yet accessible. We found this to be very welcoming, there's a fine lobby area before a smart reception and the lounges are both comfortable and yet classical. A nice touch is the refreshing flavoured water in the lobby which is a pick me up after exploring the city. The restaurant has light coloured wood panelling, some prints and views onto a small patio with water features. The buffet breakfast is very well

stocked and the wide range makes it easy to stoke the fires ahead of a solid days exploring. There is also a verandah on the fifth floor so that you can relax in the open air and look down on the street. Called the chill out terrace it is more contemporary than the old world charm in the floors below, and a perfect place to unwind. There are two lifts and although on the small side they exhibit some of the traditional Portugese tiles. We had a family room and this can be arranged as a twin or the bed made into a very large double if you want your little one in with you. There is also the option of a seperate one for your child. The room manages to combine modernity with a more classical feel and the furniture is superior with a nod toward antique. The ensuite is small (the basin has an angled edge so that the door can open) but is actually charming as it hints at past decades whilst being ultra clean and with new facilities. Whether for business or pleasure, the team supporting the private rooms is ready to exceed the expectations of the clients. Once again, the versatility of the spaces constitutes a benefit to be stressed in a hotel which has in its ever renewed modernity one of its main attributes. To maintain the modernity and a personalised service combined with an informal atmosphere was always the objective of the proprietor family. A desire which gains substance with every day that goes by, both by dint of the decoration and the elegance of the gestures which lend a distinguished air to the socialisation. Friendship and longing go hand in hand at the Hotel Lisboa Plaza. The hotel is part of a small, but exclusive group entitled 'Heritage Hotels Lisbon'. They have a selection of small Boutique Hotels in Lisbon old town. Tradition and modernity are combined in an alliance marked by private atmospheres. Owned and managed by Portuguese families, the Heritage Hotels Lisbon open the doors of the old houses and historic buildings where they are set up. It is Lisbon and its people which are revealed in every nook and cranny. The places and buildings have been selected for their urban and historic meaning.

LIONSGATE Presents - In Association with MARV - A MATTHEW VAUGHN Production With SAVILLE PRODUCTIONS - Out April 1st

“EDDIE THE EAGLE” TARON EGERTON and HUGH JACKMAN

From Kingsman to Eddie

Matthew Vaughn had just put the finishing touches on Kingsman: The Secret Service, starring Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, and as the film’s hero Eggsy, Taron Egerton, a young Welsh newcomer in his first film role.“I knew Eggsy was a performance,” says Vaughn. “Eggsy is so not Taron. I said to him, ‘It’s important you do a character now which surprises people.’ I didn’t have a doubt that Taron was going to pull Eddie off.” Egerton wasn’t even born when Edwards was soaring through the Calgary air, but the young actor quickly jumped at the chance. A test with Jackman in New York swiftly followed, before Egerton was officially offered the role just before Christmas 2014. But he took it on one proviso. “I have absolutely no interest in sending Eddie up,” says Egerton. “He can be funny, he can have mishaps, but he needs heart and soul and to be real and believable.” His initial fears were misplaced. “I wanted to dial up the emotion,” says Vaughn. “That’s what I’m most excited with this movie. Audiences will no longer think of Eddie theclown, but as Eddie the hero.” To prepare for the role, Egerton did meet with the real-life Eddie, which helped inform his performance. “Eddie is a very reasonable and pleasant, affable chap,” he says. “He has optimism, and he’s focused. There are things about Eddie that are heroic.” Egerton transformed himself for the role with the addition

of a subtle wig, the trademark thick glasses, a little extra weight, a Cheltenham accent and, towards the movie’s end, Eddie’s iconic moustache. “But I also need to be really innocent,” he says. “Hugh’s bringing all the movie star pecs, and he’s given me the room to be a bit eccentric.” The young actor also learned how to ski for the role, in order to replicate the positions required for ski jumping, from the Inrun position (the first position a ski jumper adopts asthey come down the slope) to the take-off move and the “Telemark,” which allows the jumper to land with one foot in front of the other. “Well, I did about fifteen hours!” he laughs. “I was quite nervous doing it. It’s hardcore. You realize how dangerous it is when you’re doing it.” Be under no illusions - ski jumping is an incredibly dangerous sport. “I won’t be doing the 90 metre jump,” laughs Egerton. “You have to do it every day from the age of four just for it to be safe. It’s why Eddie kept hurting himself.” Jackman, no stranger to doing his own stunts, was also daunted by the sheer difficulty of a 90 metre jump, which requires total focus and mastery of the human body just to take off, let alone land safely. “I had to do a scene where I sat on top of the jump, and I had a wire on to stop me from killing myself if I fell,” recalls Jackman. “And even then I was pretty freaked out! When you think that Eddie did that in the Olympics after doing hardly any jumps in his life, he had some serious courage.” Perhaps Vaughn sums it up best. “Whoever invented ski jumping was insane,” he remarks. “There’s no logical reason for doing it. The film ends with a famous quote from Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics. ‘The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering, but fighting well’.

Captain America - Civil War

CHRIS EVANS, ROBERT DOWNEY JR., SCARLETT JOHANSSON, SEBASTIAN STAN, ANTHONY MACKIE, PAUL BETTANY, JEREMY RENNER, DON CHEADLE, ELIZABETH OLSEN, PAUL RUDD, CHADWICK BOSEMAN, EMILY VANCAMP, FRANK GRILLO AND MARTIN FREEMAN DIRECTED BY ANTHONY AND JOE RUSSO “Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

“For all of the great action in the film, at the end of the day

it’s a really grounded story,” says Chris Evans. “The Russos make human stories with a superhero feel as opposed to superhero movies with human touches. It’s real storytelling about a genuine family conflict. That’s what makes it so great. There’s no right, there’s no wrong, and there’s no clear evil going on either side of this. It’s just a matter of whose side you connect with and agree with.” “That conflict between both sides is what will start the conversation amongst fans and audience members,” offers Scarlett Johansson. “When they leave the theater, they can hopefully still argue for either side. It will give them something to take home. We build a case for either side and as the stakes become higher and higher, the personal stakes rise as well.” “The film is also surprising and it’s scary,” adds Anthony

Russo. “I think people will like that it tracks to a place that you just can’t predict when you sit down to watch the film. Also on a simple level there’s just the thrill of watching your favorite Super Heroes beat the hell out of each other, which is always a lot of fun to see.” Movie Central Comment. Are all the super heroes fighting each other? At least Spidey doesn’t get involved with all the insided politics. Having a young outlook on life has its perks.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Who Will Win?

Running Time: 152 minutes Cert: 12A tbc. Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo”) as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent in the characters’ first big-screen pairing. Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with each other, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it has ever known before. Batman and Superman. Gotham and Metropolis. Lex Luthor, Doomsday and—for the first time ever on the big screen—Wonder Woman. With its stellar lineup of heroes and villains and bigger and better battles with even more at stake than the destruction of the Earth, Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is an epic Super Hero journey like no other. Pit the two greatest heroes in the world against each other and the unthinkable becomes inevitable in the form of a truly seismic clash: Batman, the underground vigilante, a knight in the darkness, and Superman, the unbeatable alien in the sky—who can possibly win such a war? Nearly two years have passed since Metropolis suffered a battle unlike anything Earth has ever seen. Many lives were saved, but one man can’t forget those lost in the annihilation, and now Bruce Wayne lives with a simmering rage that has begun to boil over into a feeling of powerlessness, the kind that turns good men into vengeful warriors. Indeed, it’s the very stuff of nightmares that drives the Batman to leave his mark on the criminals of Gotham, even as he turns an eye toward the greater prize. Director Zack Snyder states, “We felt an interesting way of beginning this story was to examine Superman from

another perspective, Batman’s perspective. Bruce doesn’t know who Superman is; all he knows is what the public knows. He blames him for the lives lost in Metropolis, lives that he felt responsible for. His hatred has been building up inside, and now, all this time later, he’s finding reinforcement of those feelings in the media.” For two years, Superman has soared to the rescue of countless victims around the globe and the world has praised his god-like abilities. But with unavoidable destruction in the wake of good deeds, the collateral damage from his efforts is finally causing many to question those who will only see what he can do, without debating whether or not he should. It’s a question he has even begun to ask himself, thanks to the machinations of one masterful mind hell-bent on his humiliation…and destruction. “When we find Superman, he’s been dealing with everyday life as a Super Hero, but there’s a distinct shift happening in how his heroic efforts are viewed, thanks to the unintended consequences of those acts,” Snyder continues. “Every action has a reaction; one guy’s rescue leaves another in distress. We wanted to explore the reality of saving people and what intervening can really mean. The classic idea with Superman is that he’s a good guy trying to do the right thing and that he isn’t political, but in truth, in today’s world, it’s impossible not to be, no matter your intentions.”

Ben Affleck stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman, who has been following news of Superman closely since what came to be known as the Black Zero Event, which culminated with Superman’s catastrophic combat with General Zod. “I think the story really sets the stage nicely for understanding why Batman wants to fight Superman,” he says. “It’s logical to assume that they’d be friends since they’re both good guys, but this film takes a more nuanced view of how these characters might exist in the real world and what sort of complications might come about as a result of their abilities and actions.” “Superman is beginning to face the exact challenges Jonathan Kent was worried about,” observes Henry Cavill, who reprises his dual roles as Clark Kent and the Man of Steel. “The world is filled with fear after being attacked by aliens and literally shaken to its very core. Despite having what they look to as a redeemer, the people need to direct their fear at something. In the meantime, Superman is still trying to do right by everyone and ignore the slings and arrows.” But certain arrows will be harder to deflect than others, and if Bruce Wayne, as Batman, is intent upon acting out a revenge fantasy on Superman, how might one describe his fellow industrialist Lex Luthor’s reasons for undermining the “red cape”?

As screenwriter Chris Terrio observes, “Both Bruce and Lex are billionaires, both are orphans, and both are obsessed with Superman’s absolute power. They have, at a point, the same agenda: stop Superman at any cost. But Bruce’s motives are basically good, while Lex is pathological.” All three men—Clark, Bruce and Lex—are products of what was bequeathed them by absent fathers or memories of fathers who are gone, another theme explored in the story. Each man is struggling in his own way: Bruce, who is older now than his father ever was; Clark, who is righting wrongs for a ghost; and Lex, whose relationship with his father was…less than idyllic. “Lex Luthor has always been one of the great DC villains. And one of the most epic stories in the canon was when Batman and Superman squared off against each other,” offers producer Charles Roven. “As we sought an expansion of the universe with this film, we felt that bringing these characters together was natural. Metropolis needed rebuilding, Lex is the city’s major benefactor, and he and Bruce Wayne actually share similar business enterprises in the manufacturing and digital worlds.” After what took place at the end of the previous film, it just might be plausible, the filmmakers posited, that Bruce and Lex would direct a common anger toward Superman.

24 Staying in Shape “In my mind I had set myself an even higher standard for ‘Batman v Superman’ than we set for ‘Man of Steel,’ which, in itself, was going to be a challenge,” Cavill relates. “Fortunately, however, Mark Twight was generous enough to train me throughout the filming for ‘Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ in a manner that would set me up wonderfully for the training required for ‘BvS.’” Twight was impressed with Cavill’s commitment. “He has trained himself into a condition of having genuine horsepower,” the trainer says. “Henry’s ideas for what he can do with his body have completely changed. Three years ago, he would not have thought about running up Gibraltar Rock to raise funds for the Royal Marines, but he did in 2014. When we were first in Vancouver, hiking up the Grouse Grind was a bridge too far. It’s a product of how comfortable he has become with his own physicality.” Cavill notes, “Once pre-production started on ‘BvS’ I was handed over to Michael Blevins. Together, Michael and I worked on a mass gain program, which would result in me being 20 lbs heavier than I was even during the peak of my mass gain on ‘Man of Steel.’ We then went through the leaning process to bring me down to shooting weight, which was achieved through performance-based training as well as conditioning. The great thing about working with Michael is that despite this being the hardest work I had yet done training for a role, he managed to make it an enjoyable experience, and became a good friend because of it.” Movie comment. I have always loved Batman and Superman, but Superman has always been the hero without flaws. Until now, maybe. The girls here are routing for Superman whilst the men for Batman. There is something more gentlemanly about Superman than the bat. As for Wonder Woman. We will see her next issue with a review of the film itself. Definitely a must see from the trailer. If the running time looks long, there is a lot to set up, plus the action, the romance and the greatest showdown ever. ADV

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams (“American Hustle”) as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”) as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons (“Reversal of Fortune”) as Alfred, and Holly Hunter (“The Piano”) as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Snyder directed from a screenplay written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer.

Zootopia Walt Disney Animation Studios welcomes Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman to “Zootropolis,” Disney’s 2016 animated feature set in a modern mammal metropolis. Goodwin (ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” “Something Borrowed,” “Walk the Line”) will lend her voice to an optimistic bunny named Judy Hopps who’s new to Zootopia’s police department. Jason Bateman (“Horrible Bosses 2,” “This is Where I Leave You”) voices the scamming fox, Nick Wilde, who Judy reluctantly teams up with to crack her first case. The modern mammal metropolis of Zootropolis is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighbourhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together— a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big,

tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootropolis a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: PartTime Hero”), opens in UK cinemas from March 25th 2016 and is absolutely brilliant!

THE JUNGLE BOOK NEEL SETHI, BILL MURRAY, BEN KINGSLEY, CHRISTOPHER WALKERN, LUPITA NYONG’O, IDRIS ELBA, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, GIANCARLO ESPOSITO DIRECTED BY JON FAVREAU Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when

fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the mancub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.

“The Jungle Book seamlessly blends liveaction with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-tothe-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world. One of the must see films of the year. The snake looks frightening and tthe bear cuddly. Trailers can be seen online. I normally shy away from remakes of Jungle Book as the Disney animated classic was pretty unbeatable. Until now. Finally liveaction and animation come together to lift the story to a new height and bring more frights than any purely animated film can.

Man Things with DIY Dog

Innovative 4-way ratchet, socket and bit set from Laser Tools This is an interesting socket and bit set from Laser Tools (part number 6428) — an innovative 4-way reversible ratchet that features both 3/8” and 1/4” socket drives and 1/4” and 5/16” bit drivers. The ratchet is beautifully finished and balanced and features a super-smooth 72 teeth ratchet at both ends.

DIY Dog Fitting a new lambda oxygen sensor sounds easy doesn’t it? But the old one will be seized solid — it will be stuck, you’ll never get it off. Reach for Laser Tools’ lambda sensor remover (part number 6098), a new attachment for your trusty air hammer. The sensor remover comprises the 22mm lambda sensor socket, with slot to get past the wiring, and the operating rod, which is a useful 200mm long and gives excellent access to those tucked away sensors. The air hammer shock and vibration makes light work of even the most stubborn sensors. If access is very restricted then it’s better to remove the exhaust section and move to the bench. You can bet that the sensor will still be seized through, but the sensor remover will release it in seconds and ensures that no further strain is put on the exhaust system. The socket also includes a 3/8" drive slot which allows the use of a torque wrench when installing the new sensor. Another innovative problem-solver from Laser Tools and available now from your local supplier, typically priced at £39.60 (including VAT), but remember to check for the best prices and special offers. More details from www.lasertools.co.uk and see the lambda sensor remover in action on the Tool Connection YouTube channel DIY Dog says : Not a clue, why not check out their web site and they seem to have some cool videos on YouTube.

Many years ago, my friend used to run a web site DIY Dog. he was inundated with thousands of viewers and helped them with their DIY needs. He was a German Shepherd. Now apparently, the editor decided that I should be the one to take over this roll. (Just made myself hungry) Sausage or cheese roll would be nice. I’ll be honest, I am a dog, I dont really know anything about DIY and I know that the editor is not going to be happy with the editorial but it is how it is. Just give me a biscuit and call me happy. However, I have been persuaded (couple of biscuits - 6 actually) to give my opinnion. We didnt actually have one of these ratchet things to try out, but from the picture, it looks pretty good. Now I know that German Shepherds are really intelligent and he would have waxed lyrical about how the ratchet thing worked and what it is actually used for. I am assuming that if you are excited by the thing on the left, then you already know something about these things. The one below does actually look as though it could be chewed and swung round but both these tools are extremely useful on cars. I really need a human to try one out and then tell me what they think. as long as they dont expect to share the biscuits. Well, presumably I’ll be back with something next time, no idea what it will be but then I didnt have much clue this time.

Woman behind the Wheel

CHANGE YOUR CAR EVERY TWO YEARS

Few of us wear the same winter coat for more than two years, so why not change your car every two or three years as well? It’s easier and better value for money than you may think. Martin Wedge, MD of www.carcontracthire.com says: “Many women are sick of going to a car dealership and feel they are either leered at or not taken seriously. Women know what they want in a car as much as men do, and the attraction of leasing a car is you can just type in your requirements online, choose a car, and subject to your finance deal being accepted, you can enjoy having a new car every two or three years if you wish! “When you buy a property the advantage is most properties increase in value so it’s an investment. By comparison a car decreases in value from the moment you leave the forecourt so leasing a car is an excellent solution. Leasing a car is a little like renting a house or apartment in that you sign a contract to pay a monthly fee for the car over a set period, at the end of which you hand back the keys to the leasing company. It’s a cost-effective and hassle-free way to get behind the wheel, whether it’s because you want the newest car model but can’t afford to purchase it outright, or because you simply want a new car (in a new colour) for a set period of time at a set price (with prices starting at £99 a month). Wedge continues: “At the moment only 15% of our cars are leased by women but we have been seeing a real trend towards women choosing to lease cars in the last couple of years.”

THE BENEFITS OF LEASING • Monthly costs are fixed, the only additional costs are fuel and insurance. • You don’t need to worry about your car losing value as it ages. • You avoid the hassle of selling the car at the end of the contract. • Leasing a car means you could be driving a new model every two or three years, which means you will never have to worry about the car being out of warranty. TOP TIPS FOR HOW TO KEEP SAFE WHEN DRIVING By CarContractHire.com 1) Avoid minor roads as much as possible at night. More people die on country roads than on motorways because there is no one else to help them should they have a serious crash. 2) Always carry your mobile phone in your pocket when you are driving. If it is loose or in a handbag and you crash, you may not be able to reach it. Always make sure your phone has a powered up battery and that you have a hands free kit if needs be. 3) Don’t tempt thieves – Don’t put your valuables on the passenger seat as you drive because thieves are opportunistic and can make an attempt at a grab when you stop at lights or are parking. Keep your doors locked at all times once you are in the car especially in slow traffic and at night. 4) Don’t Stop – If a car is flashing you, don’t feel you necessarily need to pull over if you are in a remote or dangerous area. Wait until you are in a safe area such as a petrol station or somewhere where there are lots of people around. The only exceptions are marked emergency vehicles. 5) Make sure you are a member of the AA or RAC so that you can get car assistance should you ever need it. Always get out of the car and stand on a safe verge if you have a breakdown on the motorway – even if it is pouring with rain. www.carcontracthire.com

Michelin CrossClimate tyres named Fleet News Best New Product 2016 Michelin’s new CrossClimate tyre – the world’s first summer tyre with winter capabilities – has won the prestigious Fleet News Award for Best New Product 2016. Hailed as a ‘game-changer’ and Michelin’s most important tyre launch for a decade, CrossClimate tyres address the need for drivers to feel safer when faced with unstable, unpredictable weather. Commenting on the significance of the win, Andy Fern, Michelin’s Head of Fleet, said: “CrossClimate tyres offer a unique solution to the problem of maintaining safety and mobility when faced with Britain’s unpredictable weather. They achieve this without the compromises imposed by so-called ‘all-season’ tyres, the need to change tyres twice a year or driving on winter tyres in summer. “Seeing this recognised by Fleet News reinforces how highly these new tyres are regarded. It’s also testament to Michelin’s annual investment of more than €640 million on R&D and an intensive three year development cycle which

made the launch at last year’s Geneva Motor Show possible. “Michelin CrossClimate tyres are ideally suited for the UK, where most motorists have to drive on occasionally snowcovered roads – while also incorporating the durability and low total cost of ownership inherent to every Michelin tyre.” The new generation of tyres have enjoyed a high profile in the fleet sector since their launch, with major fleets including British Gas and business class car service Addison Lee being amongst the early CrossClimate adopters. Michelin was one of seven companies shortlisted for the Best New Product 2016 Award, which also included CAP HPI, CheckedSafe, Fleetdrive, R2c Online, RAC Business and TomTom Telematics. The award was presented on Thursday 10 March at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London before an audience of more than 1,500 senior executives from across the fleet industry.

33 year brand. He has an unprecedented level of independent sponsorship with financial backers, partnerships with motorsport brands, companies in the automotive industry; he’s even got a clothing deal – and he only moved into cars last year! Of course it’s Damani’s raw talent and dedication to racing that has been fundamental to this process, but also the incredibly hard work he has put into his brand and public presence plus his maturity in front of the cameras. We still have a little way to go to cover all of his costs this season but there is absolutely no reason why Damani Marcano cannot grow into a million-pound brand within the next five years.”

17YR OLD RACING DRIVER BECOMES £100,000+ BRAND IN JUST 12 MONTHS Tony Gilham predicts Damani Marcano will be £1M+ brand within 5 years Teenage racing sensation Damani Marcano, is just a few weeks away from embarking on his second year of racing in cars, this time competing in two 2016 saloon car championships. With only 2 years in karting under his belt, Marcano made the move to cars in 2015, at the age of just 16, Marcano is already a bonafide £100,000+ racing brand. Where many new racers to the sport rely heavily on financial backing from affluent family members, Damani’s family was not in this position. He has had to raise independent sponsorship from the start, building his brand to offer maximum return on investment. Team-HARD. Racing Principal Tony Gilham comments: “At barely 17 years old, Damani is now a £100K+ per

In motorsports today there is much more to a driver’s role than podium finishes; financial backers, sponsors and partners expect exposure across a number of platforms as well as a vocal spokesperson from the driver they have teamed up with. In the last year, Damani has attracted a strong team of behind-the-scenes supporters. Team-HARD and RiverGlide, helped to shape his overall strategy and were soon joined by In The Bag PR and now also Integra Sports Partners to develop his brand to the maximum. On and off the track he repeatedly demonstrates incredible maturity and understanding of the industry he is currently taking by storm. Team-HARD. racing driver Damani Marcano comments: “When Tony sat me down recently and discussed my development and brand I was taken aback! I’m working hard at 6th form studying my A-Levels and I’m really busy on social media so I’ve not really had time to stop and think how far things have come or how quickly. I do understand that as a racing driver I am as much a marketing channel and source of PR for the brands that back me as anything else but it’s insane how much backing I now have. I’m really excited about the possibilities but my main focus is to get back up to speed in the car, get as much experience as I can in these first rounds and do my best to move up the grid from wherever I start the season. A season of racing is only half a year of actual experience and there are some very experienced drivers in both series; I know I still have a lot to learn.” Our roving Tiger reporters have ended up here this issue. Dash Cams are coming! One in five motorists involved in a road accident face a rise in their insurance premium as a result of bogus or misleading information from unscrupulous drivers during the claims process. This means many as 800,000 motorists* are falling victim to fraudsters each year and are left with no alternative but to pay a mimimum of £50 extra on their current premiums. The startling findings, from in-car technology producer Nextbase, have led to a link-up with Halfords offering customers buying one of their high resolution in-car cameras (dash-cams) a free subscription to Police Witness – a service that holds dangerous drivers to account by presenting the footage to the authorities.

Nextbase in-car cameras, with free Police Witness subscription, are available in Halfords stores and via http://www.halfords.com

Halfords Automotive Manager Stuart Humphreys said: “We believe that the combination of a dash-cam and the Police Witness service offers drivers greater peace of mind and protection on the road.

This week’s tips, from the IAM’s director of policy and research, Neil Greig, are advising drivers on how to cope with a breakdown on the motorway. Read our essential tips to find out more.

“Acting as an independent witness should the need arise, they not only guard against fraud but means the shock and stress experienced following an accident isn’t compounded by a biased account of events that can lead to unfair rises in insurance premiums.”

• Ensure the coolant and washer fluids are topped up, the oil level is correct and the tyres are in good working condition – they all help the vehicle maintain the higher speeds usually experienced on motorways. • Keep a high visibility jacket, waterproof clothing and a charged mobile phone in your vehicle – you never know when you will need these. • If your journey is not going as smoothly as expected, stop at the nearest service station or pull over onto the hard shoulder (only in an emergency), parking as far left as possible to avoid slowing down traffic. • Once you have pulled over, switch on your hazard warning lights so other road users are aware that you have stopped. • Use the emergency roadside telephone when you need to call for help. The distance to the nearest phone will be marked on the white posts on the hard shoulder – the operator will know where you are if you use this phone. • Make sure you and any passengers leave your vehicle by the left-hand side. Stay behind a barrier or up the embankment. If you feel threatened, get back in, lock the doors and call 999 for the police.

Psychologist an author Geoff Rolls welcomed the announcement: “Traffic accidents happen so quickly and cause such stress that it’s highly likely the recollections of the people involved will be sketchy - even without taking into account the fact that people naturally interpret things to their own advantage. “Dash-cams provide a solution to this problem and can even discourage dangerous or inconsiderate driving by making motorists accountable for actions – such as swearing, gesturing and cutting-up other drivers which can lead to road rage.” The popularity of dash-cams has notably been boosted by the growth in so-called ‘crash for cash’ scams - where innocent motorists are targeted, often by organised gangs, who cause incidents deliberately in order to make fraudulent claims. The British Insurance Association estimates that deliberate fraud and other opportunist claims for injuries, such as whiplash costs the industry over £1billion a year – a cost which is passed on to motorists through higher premiums – and a further £2 billion of false claims may also go undetected.

Neil said: “On smart motorways the hard shoulder is used as an extra lane. If your car develops a problem on this type of motorway then leave at the next exit, or pull into a motorway service area. “So long as you prepare for unexpected breakdowns you can avoid the experience becoming too inconvenient and be on your way.”

35 close”, he adds. “When that happens, it slows down or stops all by itself”. Silvia proposes that the “windows go up and down when you tell them”. Then Xavier gets off his stool and walks over to her while pointing at the Smart Watch on his wrist. “See this watch? Well, it opens the doors, tells you how much petrol you’ve used, and even knows where you parked!” “No way...!”, they all exclaim in amazement.

ONCE UPON A TIME... THERE WAS A NEW CAR •A classroom of 25 seven-year-old ask all kinds of questions about the manufacturing process of a new car prior to the launch of SEAT’s first compact SUV •“I’d put wings on my car”, or “I’d like it to have jet engines”, are some of the proposals they would like to see on a new car “What’s the first step in making a car?” “How many days does it take to make a new car?” This is just a small sampling of the questions asked by a group of sevenyear-old children. Full of curiosity and with the freshness, spontaneity and innocence that characterise their age, thanks to them we learned what is behind the creation process of a car in the year when SEAT is launching its first compact SUV. The day starts just like any other. The 25 elementary students of the ‘Minions’ class arrive at the La Salle Gràcia school in Barcelona at 9 am. They put away their book bags, hang up their coats and put on their smocks. As they wait for their usual teacher, suddenly two complete strangers walk through the door - Xavier Agustín and Amanda Gómez, an engineer and a designer from the SEAT Technical Centre. Xavier breaks the ice: “We’d love to know how you would design a new car”. The children respond immediately with suggestions like: “I’d give it jet engines and make it go underwater”, from Léonard. “I’d put wings on it”, says Ona. “A free bicycle”, suggests Júlia. “I’d like to press a button and make the car drive itself”, says the other Júlia in the class. “You’re getting close”, admits Xavier. “We have cars that park by themselves. All you have to do is work the pedals and the steering wheel turns on its own. And it parks right on the first try”. “We also have cars that detect when another one gets too

Then the children are put into two groups. “What’s the first step in making a car?”, asks Artau. “First you need something I’m sure you all use in the classroom”, replies Amanda. “Pencils”, they guess. “Exactly! Every car begins with a drawing; all you need is a pencil, paper and some imagination, just like you”. And she shows them a few sketches of SEAT models, which the children look at in astonishment. “Super cool”, they all agree. In Xavier’s group, the children also have some questions. “How many days do you need to make a car?” “On average, only about 17 hours”. “Wow!” they all exclaim. “But one thing is how long it takes to make one, and another how much time we put into designing and developing it. For that we need between three and four years”. In Amanda’s group they start playing a game. While the children imitate the movements of the robots, the SEAT designer explains to them that at SEAT “there are over 2,000 robots that make the cars and it looks like they are performing a perfectly choreographed dance”. Xavier’s group joins in on the fun. Everybody is having a good time with the car parts brought by Xavier and Amanda, but amid the hullabaloo the children keep asking questions, like when Amanda shows them a car seat and some samples of upholstery, and Xavier explains how an airbag works. “It’s similar to a balloon, but it blows up a lot faster, the same time it takes you to blink an eye”. And before they leave for the day, the two guests have prepared a well-deserved surprise for the little experts. Xavier and Amanda lead the children to the school auditorium. They have no idea what to expect as they all climb onto the stage where there is something behind closed curtains. As they slowly start to open, a large screen appears. “What are we going to watch?”, they whisper to each other. “You’re going to be the first to see our new car, the first compact SUV in the history of SEAT”. Then the screen lights up suddenly and they see it for the first time. They stare, speechless. “Cool...” is about all anyone can manage to say. Happy Families Comment. it seems that cars are entering into a new intelligent phase. The children here seem extremely excited by the whole process. But when do we get the flying cars which we all thought we would have by now or the hybrid/hover crafts that cut across a field. The car that cries out a description when it is being stolen.Or the ones that runs on water, what happened to them?

What can Children Learn from the XBox? Part One Which adventure games should they start with?

Firstly this depends on whether they are playing on their own or with friends, whether online or not, the genre and the actual game itself. Let us take it that they are on their own, a seven year old child that has an hour to play. Firstly, it is important that they don’t get too tired or strain their eyes whilst playing. I was once at an event where a ‘mum’ blogger asked Microsoft why they didn’t make it so that the XBox would work outside, so that the child could play out there. Now, as much of a fan for the XBox as I am, once you get the children outside, lets enjoy it without any electronics. The XBox is to played in a room that can become the extension for whatever world they are experiencing. The first thing the XBox does is aid in concentration and imagination. Rarely does a child come off the XBox without wanting to bring the game into the real world. Hence, they were a super hero in the game and now they can race round the garden with the dog become a super hero again. They also learn not to give up on a problem, whichever game they are playing. At seven years old on the XBox, it is most likely to be either a Dimensions or Disney Infinity game. Both of which are excellent for engaging the child.

Both games offer free play, which broadens the imagination. As you add on more sets, more characters and worlds are available to you. The Lego aspect of Dimensions does allow model building whilst playing the game. But whichever one they are playing, they still have to solve puzzles to complete missions. Even just working out where to go in an XBox game can provide a challenge but these are designed to allow young players to enjoy them, they are not as difficult as stand alone games. This encourages the child to search and follow easy clues to progress within the games. As with any type of game, it is designed to make you feel good and excited. If a child becomes stuck for too long, they begin to get despondent and this you obviously want to avoid. However, with Dimensions and Infinity there are so many clues that this is something you may not need to worry about. If they are new to XBox, take the time to play with them or just watch them, they love this. If you play with them, you’ll be surprised at how entertaining the games are for adults too. Your child will be keen to show you what they have accomplished each time they play. This can help bring shyer children out from their shells. If they do have a problem and you can’ t help them solve it. Help is always on hand on the internet where walkthroughs and tips can be found which make you the expert and give you the edge you need to play as their equal! A great deal of humour has been built in to all the Lego based games so I would recommend starting with Dimensions. As long as it is not abused the XBox is a great tool in development. It can even help them to read. As instructions fly up on screen, they will naturally want to be able to know what new special ability they have found so they can share it with you.

Health Researchers find key to stubbing out smoking

Partner support (not nagging!) could be key to stopping smoking. Support from a partner after the quit date and refraining from nagging are important factors in successfully stopping smoking, according to a researcher at the University of Aberdeen. Dr Gertraud Stadler tracked the behaviour of 100 couples with one smoker and one nonsmoker while working with Dr Urte Scholz at the University of Zuerich. The results of the study showed that those with partners who offered emotional encouragement and practical support were more likely to stop smoking than those with unsupportive or nagging partners. On particular days when partners helped out with practical tasks like shopping or looking after the children, smokers were more likely to cut down on smoking. In the study, smokers and their partners were asked to use mobile phones to keep a record of the support the partner offered prior to and after their preset quit date. They were then followed up to monitor their progress in stopping smoking. Dr Stadler said: “These results are really helpful when making a plan to stop smoking. “According to this study, the smoker’s chance of stopping smoking would increase if we can train the partners to give more tailored support according to the smokers’ habits. “The whole idea behind these studies was to really understand what happens on a day to day basis when one partner quits smoking and importantly, what the other can do to help them. “We asked couples to keep diaries ten days before the smoker tried to quit and for 21 days after. This meant we could look at whether quitting success differs whether the non-smoking partner provides support beforehand or after the quit date. “We found that support was most beneficial when given after the quit date, this makes sense given that this was when the help was really needed.

Stop Nagging! “We know that there are many things that are not helpful in stopping smoking – such as nagging or trying to control the situation. These results show that we should encourage the partner to offer emotional support as well as practical help like taking care of the kids. There are lots of things that partners can do to help their significant others quit.”
