CHARACTER Integrity, Respect, Resilience, Accountability Cape Fear Academy believes that strength of character is an essential element of success. We foster individuals who make good decisions, respect and empathize with others, deal with challenges successfully, deliver on their commitments, and are accountable for their actions. COMMUNITY Cape Fear Academy believes that students thrive in a close-knit community that both nurtures and challenges the individual. We value personal connections and service to others, build supportive relationships, and celebrate diverse talents, perspectives, and backgrounds. OPPORTUNITY Cape Fear Academy believes that participating in a broad range of opportunities stimulates personal growth. We develop the whole child by encouraging participation in athletics, arts, and other extracurricular activities. We challenge students to discover and develop their passions and strengths by providing a wealth of opportunities both in and outside the classroom. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Cape Fear Academy believes that our graduates will face an increasingly competitive, rapidly evolving world. We prepare our students by teaching them to think critically and creatively, communicate and collaborate effectively, achieve technological fluency, and become engaged members of our global society. From Head of School Don Berger Paula Sneeden has worked diligently throughout the school year to reestablish our Alumni Council and offer more alumni events. We intend to reconnect with alumni and strengthen current relationships, with the goal of better serving past, present, and future CFA students. Recognizable growth in our alumni outreach parallels growth in many areas of CFA life. We saw CFA students going further as they: • won high honors at the state level of the North Carolina Theatre Council’s competition, • achieved better results on AP exams than any other independent school in North Carolina save one,
On a warm October evening, sixteen CFA alumni gathered at a Raleigh restaurant to hear about the school, catch up with friends, and do a bit of alumni networking. After chatting with a few recent alums, Alumni Coordinator Paula Sneeden ‘76 introduced me to Eddie Wetherill ‘73. Eddie earned an engineering degree from NC State, worked for the DOT and commercial firms, and, with his wife in 1993, started a very successful civil engineering business. It turns out that two of the young alums with whom I had just been chatting, Nancy Lee McLean ‘13 and Taylor Brennan ‘12, are studying Civil Engineering at NC State. Introductions followed with the young ladies hearing some sage advice from their fellow CFA alumnus. Alumni networking of this sort is common among colleges, universities, and our nation’s finest prep schools. It is part of the added value of an independent school education and an aspect of our new tag line Go Further that we often gloss over.
• outperformed their independent school peers in grades 8, 9 and 10 nationally on the ERB writing test, • participated in a new Lower School reading program where student independent reading resulted in literally thousands of books read, and, • experienced the thrill of a sixth NC Independent School Athletic Association Boys Tennis championship in seven years. If you’ve been on campus recently, you’ve seen flags on light poles, banners on the gym façade, and roll up signs inside the Brown Family Theater in the Erin E. McNeill Fine Arts Center that promote the fact that CFA students go further. This new marketing campaign resulted from extensive research that is recognized across a wide spectrum of Wilmington’s citizens, whether or not they have been directly involved with our school, that CFA students excel. Over the next few years, we are committed to making sure all understand and appreciate that at Cape Fear Academy students Go Further.

Community Service
Bringing a Garden to Life CFA STUDENTS CREATE NICU OASIS A random meeting at their sons’ hockey match brought Alison Martin (mother of Will Martin’18) and Lisa and Michael Boggio (parents of Will ’18 and Cole ’18 Boggio) to act on a common passion – supporting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. At that match several years ago, these parents discovered that Will Martin and the Boggio twins were born one week apart at NHRMC. When Alison Martin told the Boggios that she worked in the NICU as the Family Follow-Up Coordinator, they realized another connection; the Boggio twins were the benefactors of the outstanding care provided by the NICU having been born there prematurely at 28 weeks. So last fall, Alison approached Michael and Lisa about a community service opportunity that would benefit the NICU – a Family Garden. The new facility, as part of the Betty H. Cameron Hospital for Women and Children, was beautiful on the interior. Outside was a huge area with a “mud pit,” according to Alison, which was a blank slate for a garden for families with children in the NICU. Both families wanted their 7
children to understand the gravity of what NICU families face and saw this as an opportunity to give back. “Somehow, we wanted the boys to know that their outcome might not have been as good if not for the care there,” Michael said. Thus began a CFA community service connection to the NICU Family Garden. In the fall of 2014, a group of about 15 – 20 CFA students did a community service day there, followed by another one in the spring. The students toured the facility and began to understand the fragile situation in which these families were living. Alison felt the students benefited greatly, “For the kids to complete a project from beginning to end in a day – they see the results – right outside the doors of the NICU.” She added that the students were inspired to know that their work meant that families could come out and plant a flower, a lovely symbol of growing and nurturing and life. Michael Boggio also felt compelled to give back to the hospital because of the people who supported and guided them through their harrowing experience.
Upper School Students at the spring community service day
As a result, he has served a term on the hospital’s board. Not only did they have an amazing outcome 16 years ago, he said, but some of the doctors and nurses have remained lifelong friends.
“The flowers we planted were young and small like a NICU child. We hope that, with caring and love, both the children and the flowers will grow and thrive.” Alison is proud of the work of the NICU and of the CFA student volunteers. The unit has received national attention at the professional level and is a trailblazer in model of care, especially in infection control. And now the lovely garden adds even more to a remarkable unit for premature babies by providing "Nature that Nurtures," and giving families some respite care outside of the stressful environment of the NICU.
Will and Cole Boggio say it feels good to do something for a place that did so much for them. It has been particularly rewarding to look at what they are doing through the eyes of families with children in the unit’s care. “We like doing something that gives them comfort and hope,” Will says. Cole adds, “The flowers we planted were young and small like a NICU child. We hope that, with caring and love, both the children and the flowers will grow and thrive.”

Community Museum on Wheels Volunteers Keep Coming After Children Graduate “When we moved here, CFA immediately became our community, and it stayed that way, even after my children graduated. It has become part of who I am, just like it became part of who my children are.” With those words, Olga Joachim, mother of Sam ’07, Benji ’04, and Aaron ’01, explains why she continues to volunteer with CFA’s Museum on Wheels, eight years after her youngest graduated. It is about the camaraderie of being with other volunteers who are passionate about art and love helping Lower School students have an “aha” moment during classroom presentations.
Maitre explains one reason for her passion for MOW: “The delightful part of the program is the children’s interest. They are so well behaved and respectful – and they ask amazing questions! You can tell they love being exposed to art.” The concept is simple. Every two weeks, their meeting is led by a member who has researched and created a PowerPoint presentation designed to be discussed and then presented to students. At a recent meeting, works by Degas with slides of his works sparked discussion on his influence on Mary Cassatt as well as his characteristic use of negative space. The goal is to help students view art with a more developed aesthetic eye as well as help them make connections between artists and time periods in history. Approximately fifteen volunteers make up the group now which is presently led by Vonda Davis. Maitre says that MOW was supposed to be a gathering of mothers who were learning and teaching art enrichment to Lower School classes, but it became more when the group lost one of its earliest members, Alpha Ward-Burns, to cancer in 2011, after supporting her through several years of illness. They collectively realized that their passion for the work they were doing was also matched by volunteering with like minds – as they put it, “they had found their tribe.” Founding members Anna Maynard, Glenda Newell, and Rose Zimmer were part of their “tribe” for many years, but Joachim and Maitre have stayed, each providing almost 15 years of lessons.
Caroline Butler, Katherine Marapese, Carole McCormick, and Valerie Maitre review materials on Degas.
Valerie Maitre, mother of Joseph ’14, Jeremie ’07, J.B. ’05, and Pierre ’03, was looking to become involved in the school when her boys enrolled in 2001. She had been part of a similar volunteer group at her children’s previous school and found support from Lower School Director, Libby White, and art teacher, Lorann Hellens, when she offered to start one here. Hellens even coined the name “Museum on Wheels” (MOW) to describe these mobile art history lessons. 9
And the tribe continues its legacy - enriching the lives of Lower School students as their way of contributing to the CFA community.

Faculty Spotlight Jan Reid’s Legacy of Excellence When Jan Reid joined the CFA staff in August of 2006, she brought with her a solid record of success and a passion for excellence. Her achievements have continued at CFA with her publications staff winning numerous awards at state competitions under her guidance. “My commitment to quality began while I was advising Hoggard’s yearbook in 1989. I loved to write, and I loved to take photographs, but I knew very little about designing a layout. Through the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association, I became a part of a support system for advisors, and by attending their workshops and the summer institute, I developed an appreciation for those teachers who valued the process of publishing as well as the product.” She retired from public school teaching in June of 2006 but only maintained her retirement status for three months. “When Hugh McManus called me and asked if I was interested in a part-time position, I had had just enough retirement living to be bored, and I jumped at the chance to do something I loved, without the burden of full-time employment.” Her role at CFA has been to teach Upper School students to produce an annual yearbook and a quarterly 16-page newspaper. She introduced student staffers to the Scholastic Media Association summer institutes at UNC-Chapel Hill. The 2011 book was the first to be submitted for judging, and it earned All North Carolina status—but not the top award. As a result, the staff was anxious to win the Tar Heel Award —which happened the next year with Carryl Tinsley and Rachel Schmidlin as the editors. The yearbook staff has won the Tar Heel twice since then—in 2013 and 2015. This past summer, Upper School director Hugh McManus was named Administrator of the Year at the state competition. Reid said she nominated him because he has been so supportive of her and her staff, both at CFA and at Hoggard. “He visits our class regularly, because he enjoys talking with the students and seeing what they are doing. He singles out publications students to praise them in assembly or in a group email. He genuinely cares about what we do and who we are. He is our biggest fan, and the students and I appreciate his enthusiastic support.”
Jan Reid accepting the Tar Heel Award at the NCSMA Summer Institute
Reid continues to take joy in her work after more than 25 years of being a publications teacher. ‘I love seeing students invested in the process of creating a permanent reminder of their youth. I want them to take pride in their work, in their school, and in the collaboration that causes a yearbook or newspaper to exist.’
The collaborative aspect of her classroom has a lifelong benefit. “Learning to break a task into components, meet deadlines, delegate responsibilities, collaborate, and own the problem as well as the solution—these are life skills. Our staff is like a team; if one player drops the ball, someone else on the team will have to pick it up in order for us to succeed. We can’t stand around waiting for the ball to pick itself up. When things go wrong, pointing the finger and blaming others won’t solve the problem. So we learn to find solutions. Imagine how much better life would be if we all focused on finding solutions rather than on assigning blame.”
If a yearbook staff is satisfied with its product, it’s hard to set goals and achieve them. When a staff sees what other schools do, they often want to improve. 10

Dott Taylor Hooten Endowment The endowment is named for a beloved chemistry, math, and physics teacher who served Cape Fear Academy from 1978 until 1985. Prior to having children and moving to Wilmington, Dott Taylor Hooten had a successful career at DuPont. She first came to Cape Fear Academy as a parent in 1973. Her two sons, Jimmy and Mark, both graduated from the Academy, in 1979 and 1982 respectfully, and became physicians. Upon her death in 1986, friends and family started the endowment and its award in her memory and her dedication to math and science. Dr. James P. Hooten, Jr.

Mutual Benefits How Your Estate Can Do More
“When my mother died, and we were working our way through the settling of her estate, we realized the enormity of missed opportunities.” It’s a familiar refrain to professionals guiding families with the probate process. “To have been able to protect more of her assets from estate taxes and have funds distributed to institutions that she loved is something I now understand and wish I had helped guide her establish while she was still alive.” The jargon can be daunting, and the process may seem to be as well, but establishing a charitable lead trust will reduce taxes on the estate by donating to charities from the estate. Professional estate planners and trust/estates attorneys are among the professionals who can guide this process. This is just one example of opportunities for “planned gifts” that can provide significant benefits to the donor and a non-profit institution such as Cape Fear Academy.
What is Planned Giving? Planned giving helps donors find ways to make charitable gifts now or after their lifetime, while potentially providing financial benefits for themselves and loved ones. Unlike cash donations, planned giving donations are typically made from assets in the donor’s estate rather than disposable income. Planned gifts take many forms, each tailored to suit the needs of the donor. Individuals who inform Cape Fear Academy of a planned gift are identified as CFA Legacy Leaders.
Ways to Give • Include a specific amount or percentage of assets in your will for Cape Fear Academy. Personal property of value such as antiques and art collections can provide tax deductions but not make a significant impact on the value of an estate, • Include Cape Fear Academy as a beneficiary of your IRA or 401(k) retirement plan. These funds can pass to the school tax-free, while family beneficiaries will pay significant taxes if inherited. • Make Cape Fear Academy the owner or beneficiary of your life insurance. A donor who owns a large policy or has multiple policies which are not needed to fund estate requirements can give the policy to Cape Fear Academy and allow the school to choose to take the cash value or benefits upon death. The policy can also be set up for Cape Fear Academy to be the beneficiary of the policy outright. • Donate property to Cape Fear Academy while retaining its use during your lifetime. Real estate can be a challenging part of an estate when it is time to settle. Giving these types of assets to the school avoids estate, gift, and capital gains taxes while providing an income tax deduction for the donor. • Choose a charitable remainder trust, which can provide a variable or fixed income for a period of time as specified or choose a charitable lead trust, which passes assets to your heirs with less estate tax.
Please consider joining our legacy leaders who have included Cape Fear Academy in their estate plans. For more information, contact: Dawn Carter Director of Development 910.791.0287 x5011 dcarter@capefearacademy.org
