From Head of School Don Berger The 2013-14 school year came to a glorious conclusion on May 30, as an all-time CFA high of 66 students received their diploma. In this annual report reflection, it is difficult to capture all the excitement, success and optimism of the past school year. There were so many wonderful student and faculty accomplishments last year; my apologies in advance to the many not mentioned.

Another area where I found the 2013-14 school year to be remarkable was the large increase in cross-divisional collaborations that paired older and younger students. Both older and younger students benefitted from the following endeavors:

Our Lower School welcomed new leadership as Susan Boyer, fresh from her administrative post in Vienna, Austria, hit the ground running. Intent on advancing the strategic goal of strengthening our community’s character, Ms. Boyer instituted three new student behavioral expectations: Be Respectful, Make Smart Choices, Be a Good Friend. Intent on raising the bar for all students, Susan worked with faculty to implement Columbia University’s Writers Workshop and began the design of a much more comprehensive Lower School report card. In addition, she organized a series of full Lower School special assemblies, including four talent shows that allowed well over 50 students the opportunity to perform on stage for their peers!

• Older lower school classes became Reading and Math Buddies for our LE and kindergarten students

We also welcomed a new Middle School director, Mr. Peter Hourigan, who joined CFA from the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. CFA became the first school of any type in Wilmington to offer a formal Chinese class, as a whopping 20 sixth graders learned mandarin under the tutelage of native speaker Lu Xue. Middle School students were treated to an extraordinary Veterans Day Assembly organized by seventh grade English teacher Samantha Morris, where a dozen veterans, representing every war from Korea through our current conflict in Afghanistan, spoke to students in small groups. In January, our Middle School thespians performed The Little Mermaid, Jr. to packed houses (with standing room only on Sunday’s final show). Our Upper School actors also performed to full houses as their rendition of Chicago received rave reviews. Similarly noteworthy, more members of our Upper and Middle School bands were selected to the North Carolina Association of Independent School Honors Band than any other private school in the state. They gave a superb concert in UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium. In the athletic arena, 90% of our 224 Upper Schoolers played at least one sport, and our Girls Soccer and Boys Tennis Teams distinguished themselves with State Championships.

• Little Explorers (LE) and grade 4 CFA Campus Map and Building Project • Third grade and eighth grade Simple Machines Study

• Middle schoolers joined lower school students for a holiday arts and crafts project in December. • First grade and seventh grade buddies worked together on activities throughout the year. • Middle school advisories had active partnerships with LE and kindergarten classrooms. • Upper school Spanish classes read story books in Spanish to LE monthly. • Middle School Green Team worked with Little Explorers to create and maintain raised beds of vegetables and flowers. • Upper school debate class worked with the fourth grade. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention three other outstanding strategic accomplishments in 2013-14. First, our Advancement Team, with the help of numerous parent volunteers, held our first Holiday Market, a successful fundraising event that opened CFA’s doors to the greater Wilmington community. Second, our parents and employees both participated in workshops where they clarified and defined our school’s core values of respect, integrity, resilience and accountability. The documents are available to all on our website. Third, our school’s positive direction combined with strong work by our admissions staff resulted in a record number of new students (16) who enrolled during the year. Given all of the above and much more, it is with great optimism and that I anticipate continued successes in the 2014-2015 school year.

Community Cape Fear Academy Launches Business Partnership Program Connecting to Prominent Community Employers A new effort over the last year has proven that intentional connections between CFA and area businesses can be beneficial to all. With the premise that Cape Fear Academy offers the Wilmington area’s strongest college preparatory program, partnerships with UNC-W, PPD, Live Oak Bank, GE, and New Hanover Regional Medical Center are being developed, with other businesses forthcoming. The companies who are committing to the partnership program agree to promote CFA to their employees for consideration of enrollment of their children. The business agrees to include information about Cape Fear Academy during the hiring and orientation process for employees. In return, they are promised campus tours with the Head of School and a streamlined admission process for those they refer. In addition, each partner business agrees to establish a contact person with whom Cape Fear Academy’s Director of Admissions and other appropriate personnel can communicate to relay pertinent information and discuss collaborative possibilities. Partner businesses also agree to consider the possibility of creating an internship position for a CFA student as part of the Summer Internship Program. Other possible collaborations might include a joint community service project, supplying a guest speaker for Cape Fear Academy’s career day, and/or appropriate visits by student groups. In return, the business would be recognized on the CFA website, in the annual report, and in the student newspaper. Head of School Don Berger summed up the successes to date. “I am very pleased that six of Wilmington's largest and most prominent employers have reacted so positively to this partnership. We expect these relationships will increase enrollment and enrich our students' academic experience.”

Opportunity Alums Release Music Video: From CFA Talent Shows to Professional Musicians The Rosannah Sisters Shine Throughout their career as Cape Fear Academy students, Roxanna and Rebecca Goudarzi shared their musical talents - from Vocal Ensemble to musical theater to musical collaborations with other student groups. At their first public performance as a sister act, they won the Cape Fear Academy Star Search Competition, performing “The First Cut is the Deepest.” The sisters feel very lucky to have attended a school where students are encouraged to explore and succeed in the arts as a creative outlet. While they always were interested in music, having so much exposure to music and opportunity to perform at school drove their ambition to take their hobby to the next level. Upon graduating from Cape Fear Academy in 2005, Roxanna began her college career at Duke University. At Duke, Roxanna completed a BS in Economics while pursuing a Music minor in vocal performance. Rebecca graduated from CFA in 2007 and pursued her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish at Davidson College. After graduation, she spent time in Los Angeles working in television and film, where she became a member of SAG-AFTRA. In Los Angeles, Roxanna and Rebecca reconnected and formed their musical duo, composing, recording, and performing regularly. Today, Roxanna and Rebecca are writing music and performing as a folk/pop duo called “The Rosannah Sisters.” They have released their first 3-track EP, Wishing Well, which they recorded during the last year in Los Angeles. They also just released their first official music video for their song “Wishing Well,” directed by CFA’s own Benedict R. Fancy.

“At CFA, we were instilled a strong sense of work ethic and dedication to both our peers and our teachers. This has encouraged us to work hard in both our career and extracurricular pursuits, even when scheduling gets crazy. At CFA, we could see that one person could make a difference - whether it was their involvement in a student club, their contribution to a class discussion, or their performance on a sports team. Everyone could shine in their own respective ways, and this encouraged us to find our niche at our respective colleges and in our respective fields.”

Character CFA Leads NCAIS Honor Band Cape Fear Academy band students and their director, Ms. Rebecca Best, hosted the NC Association of Independent Schools Honor Band on October 10-11, 2013. CFA had a record of 27 students selected into the band, the highest number ever! The concert was held in Kenan Auditorium on the campus of UNCW. Ms. Best summed up the experience: “We were pleased to host this event and even more excited that so many of our students were selected for this prestigious group of performers.

Veterans Day: Middle School Introduces a New Tradition On November 12, 2013, Middle School students and faculty began a new tradition of honoring those who have served our country in the military. They hosted several Armed Forces veterans spanning conflicts from WWII through Afghanistan who shared their experiences in their respective service branches. As a school, CFA prides itself in engaging students to be active learners. By having these veterans on campus, our students interacted with and learned from those who served our country. The event began with an assembly in the Erin E. McNeill Fine Arts Center, where the veterans were introduced to the students. This was followed by smaller breakout sessions where groups of students engaged with a veteran who shared his or her particular military experiences. Then the students had opportunities to ask questions of these esteemed Americans. Students expressed strong interest in continuing this event for future Veterans Day observations.

Academic Excellence CFA Launches Area’s First Mandarin Program August 2013 ushered in the first set of students who will be learning Mandarin Chinese in Middle School at CFA. This began the only Chinese language class taught in any primary school, secondary school, or even college in the greater Wilmington area.

The program began with 20 sixth-grade students who will keep taking Mandarin Chinese as they move through middle school and on into high school. The plan is to continue to offer a beginning Mandarin Chinese class for each new group of sixth-grade students.

China's growing population and its economic influence prompted Cape Fear Academy to start the program. The school chose Mandarin because it is the most recognized dialect of the Chinese language. It is considered the official language in China, and it is widely spoken in other Asian countries, including Singapore and Malaysia. Teacher Lu Xue grew up in China and came to the U.S. to attend Vanderbilt University. She enjoys teaching this new language as well as elements of her native culture.

Mutual Benefits How Your Estate Can Do More

“When my mother died, and we were working our way through the settling of her estate, we realized the enormity of missed opportunities.” It’s a familiar refrain to professionals guiding families with the probate process. “To have been able to protect more of her assets from estate taxes and have funds distributed to institutions that she loved is something I now understand and wish I had helped guide her establish while she was still alive.” The jargon can be daunting, and the process may seem to be as well, but establishing a charitable lead trust will reduce taxes on the estate by donating to charities from the estate. Professional estate planners and trust/estates attorneys are among the professionals who can guide this process. This is just one example of opportunities for “planned gifts” that can provide significant benefits to the donor and a non-profit institution such as Cape Fear Academy.

What is Planned Giving? Planned giving helps donors find ways to make charitable gifts now or after their lifetime, while potentially providing financial benefits for themselves and loved ones. Unlike cash donations, planned giving donations are typically made from assets in the donor’s estate rather than disposable income. Planned gifts take many forms, each tailored to suit the needs of the donor. Individuals who inform Cape Fear Academy of a planned gift are identified as CFA Legacy Leaders.

Ways to Give • Include a specific amount or percentage of assets in your will for Cape Fear Academy. Personal property of value such as antiques and art collections can provide tax deductions but not make a significant impact on the value of an estate, • Include Cape Fear Academy as a beneficiary of your IRA or 401(k) retirement plan. These funds can pass to the school tax-free, while family beneficiaries will pay significant taxes if inherited. • Make Cape Fear Academy the owner or beneficiary of your life insurance. A donor who owns a large policy or has multiple policies which are not needed to fund estate requirements can give the policy to Cape Fear Academy and allow the school to choose to take the cash value or benefits upon death. The policy can also be set up for Cape Fear Academy to be the beneficiary of the policy outright. • Donate property to Cape Fear Academy while retaining its use during your lifetime. Real estate can be a challenging part of an estate when it is time to settle. Giving these types of assets to the school avoids estate, gift, and capital gains taxes while providing an income tax deduction for the donor. • Choose a charitable remainder trust, which can provide a variable or fixed income for a period of time as specified or choose a charitable lead trust, which passes assets to your heirs with less estate tax.

Please consider joining our legacy leaders who have included Cape Fear Academy in their estate plans. For more information, contact: Dawn Carter Director of Development 910.791.0287 x5011 dcarter@capefearacademy.org
