ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - 2013

From Head of School Don Berger The 2012-13 school year, my first at CFA, saw many exciting and wonderful achievements, including the creation of a new strategic plan. The Strategic Planning Committee spent 18 months reviewing data, listening to myriad community members, and meeting frequently to develop an outstanding roadmap for our school’s future. For me, the highlight of our thorough planning process was a Community Visioning Day, led by national consultant Christina Drouin, where 90-plus teachers, trustees, administrators, alumni, staff, students, and parents met to create our school’s new vision statement and four strategic goals: Vision 2018: CFA will be a diverse community of learners widely recognized for their academic excellence, strength of character, and global awareness.

Goal 1: Empowering Academic Excellence: By 2018 Cape Fear Academy will be a school where all students discover and develop academic passions and excel at critical thinking and communication skills required for success in a globally connected world.

Goal 2: Strengthening our Community’s Character: By 2018, Cape Fear Academy will be a diverse community with a campus culture that reflects the best of the human spirit in beliefs, actions, and relationships.

Goal 3: Enhancing CFA’s Regional Reputation: By 2018, Cape Fear Academy will be regarded as the undisputed regional leader in PK-12 educational excellence. Goal 4: Securing Sustainable Finances: By 2018, Cape Fear Academy’s financial future will be increasingly secure. The Visioning Day participants also developed strategies to achieve each goal. These strategies were then turned over to Strategic Goal Committees which developed the specific initiatives we are undertaking to carry out the strategies and achieve our goals. I encourage you to visit our website to view the full strategic plan and the many community members responsible for producing it. Special gratitude goes to Trustee Todd Atwood, who oversaw the entire process from day one in January 2012. 2012-13 was also a year of many student successes! We graduated our largest class (65) ever. Our upper school students continued to achieve outstanding results on the College Board’s AP exams, with 93% of all tests taken receiving a college recommending score of 3 or higher! Seven CFA students placed in the top 13 at the annual UNC-W High School Mathematics Southeastern Regional Contest. CFA had more students selected for the NCAIS Honors Band than any other independent school in the state. At the Regional Competition for National History Day, all 18 CFA students qualified for the state competition in Raleigh, where CFA students took two 1st places, two 2nd places, two 3rd places and one 5th place. The top prizes in the North Carolina Azalea Festival Children’s Art Contest went to CFA students! In athletics, our cheerleaders earned an NCISAA State Championship for non-tumble squads. Our middle school boys “A” basketball team were the Division 1 middle school champions. Boys varsity tennis won its 6th consecutive CFIC championship and the girls won their 9th consecutive CFIC title and were state runners-up. Boys lacrosse finished 6-0 versus New Hanover County public schools and boys cross country won the CFIC title. But even more impressive than victories was that 95% of eligible middle school students and 90% of upper school students played at least one interscholastic sport. 2012-13 also saw the initiation of our Student Internship and World Exchange Programs. In the latter, twelve students from Collegio Iberoamericano in Loja, Ecuador visited CFA and then eight CFA students traveled to Ecuador, spending four days sightseeing around the capital of Quito, a week going to school with their new friends in Loja, and then four days touring the Galapagos Islands. Our Internship Program saw ten CFA students placed over the summer at a variety of Wilmington companies such as Castle Branch, Queensboro Shirt Company, One Belle Bakery, Coastal Carolina Animal Hospital, and Swirl Films. Our students’ achievements, new and continuing programs, and exceptional teaching could not occur without the generous support from the hundreds of individuals and families who contribute generously to Cape Fear Academy. Tuition alone cannot fund the many curricular and extracurricular enrichments we provide to our students, from our youngest students’ many museum trips to our seniors’ Outward Bound experience. For each of your contributions, I am extremely grateful.
