Miss Mississippi Junior High School America Building Respect and Values for Everyone (B.R.A.V.E.), our anti-bullying platform, has had a huge and lasting impact on my life. I have been verbally bullied, excluded from a group, lied about, and even cyber bullied. I know my bullies mean to hurt me by their actions and it does hurt; however, if I give in to the bullying, my bully wins. Through B.R.A.V.E., I have learned that arguing or hitting back tends to escalate the issue, puts me at greater risk, and can get me into trouble. School bullies want a reaction, and becoming visibly upset by hitting, or even crying, gives them that reaction. At that point, the bully wins. The best response is to stay calm and walk away. I try to answer bullying with a little humor and agree with the bully to diffuse the situation. It is not always easy, but I am getting stronger every day because of B.R.A.V.E. By my learning and speaking about B.R.A.V.E., I am helping to prevent bullying and empowering myself and others with coping and survival skills. It gives me a sense of happiness in my knowing that I have helped someone else with a problem that I have been affected with since I was in the 3rd grade. That is why I am so passionate about speaking with students about the effects on myself and others! If I can help one person who is struggling with bullying and depression, I believe that all of my suffering and pain would be worth it. Through my speaking to others, I strive to stop bullying once and for all and impact others in the same way that I have been impacted by B.R.A.V.E.!

Miss Mississippi High School America No doubt, bullying takes place at all schools. It is sad to say but it has happened years ago and continues now. It is a major challenge for our teachers and students, especially the victims. Bullying affects everyone, leading to low self-esteem and skipping school. I am so glad that we have groups and individuals that are now focused on standing up to these bullies. Early anti-bullying education can lessen the severity of bullying and teach the victims to stand up for themselves. Since elementary school, I had an enemy. Not sure why, but I did. I will call her Kathy. We had several classes together and she loved to get a group of girls to gang up and laugh, whisper and point at me. It made me feel terrible, the lowest of lows. It continued daily, monthly, yearly‌. Sports we participated in together were the same way. Kathy always had to be the best, strongest, fastest and the bossiest! She loved to make rude comments under her breath and put down my abilities. I actually quit a sport that I was pretty good in because of her. Bye, bye scholarship for that sport! Middle school did not change her much. It actually made Kathy more bitter and jealous. She just had a new set to girls to ring-lead. She was constantly putting me down to others regarding my clothing, activities, makeup or whatever she thought was funny. Several of her friends who were afraid to go against her, would tell me in confidence what all she had said about me. She even went as far as asking an extremely personal question in front of the whole class and just died laughing. All I could do was cringe! Social media was the same. She wrote many indirect tweets, Instagram posts, etc, that I knew were meant for me. I finally had enough! After much thought, I came up with a plan to confront her in front of her group at the very next bullying incident. Well, the day came. I dreaded it so but knew it was necessary. I walked into the classroom and she started laughing and everyone else got quiet. I just walked up and told her that I did not appreciate the way she had treated me for years for no reason. I told her that I thought she should really think about her bullying makes others feel. I described how she made me and other feel when she did that. At first she was mad and denied it. I assume she went home and thought about it. Later that week she finally made

an effort to speak to me. She never really bothered or bullied me again. I am glad I finally put an end to her repeatedly bullying me. Hoping my story inspires others to stand up for themselves and know their self-worth. Bye-bye bullies for good‌

Miss Mississippi Collegiate America I never really thought I was “bullied”. I always just assumed that was how people treated each other, until I started doing pageants and I met more people outside of my normal circle and realized people can actually be NICE to one another. It was a new found concept I hadn’t experienced before. I came back to my normal circle excited to change things up and show them that we could support each other and help each other up instead of tear each other down. The people I thought were my friends were not exactly on board with my new philosophy of how we should treat each other. So, I decided to be my own person and do it alone. I was tired of the gossip, drama, and negative comments. Doing it on my own wasn’t very easy either. Going against the world and society is never easy. Our society has gotten too comfortable with bullying. Just about all movies about high school have a mean girl or mean guy that rules the school and bullies everyone else. We should (like our platform B.R.A.V.E) respect and value EVERYONE. Getting away from the “bullies” who never had a positive thing to say and tore everyone down, was one of the best decisions I ever made. Losing some people I thought were “friends” made my life so much easier and made me a more positive person because I wasn’t constantly being brought down by them.
