* *
LOCATION: Joint Security Area, DMZ, Korea PROJECT SIZE (GSF): 67,930 sqft PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: South Korea, North Korea, United Nation & Redcross BUILDING USE/TYPE: Government Among many countries with borders, North and South Korea has the most fortified condition. Both parties have been in a neutral state since 1953, which signifies that another war can arise at any moment. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) embodies the tensions and contrasts in politics and ideologies in the form of a 4km buffer zone. Within the DMZ lies the Joint Security Area (JSA): the only place where the North and South are allowed to meet face to face. Facilitated and maintained by the United Nations, JSA is the only designated area for engagement and dialogue. Ironically, the current JSA is merely a miniaturized DMZ, where North and South stand across and apart, with UN a tenuous presence keeping delicate balance. Since the buffer between the two maximizes the tension, the goal of this project is to remove the in-between spaces by rearranging the JSA into a single entity rather than three. The complexity lies in the politically restrictive programs, and the United Nations is a component that can accommodate these programs, therefore, blending becomes a possibility. In order to solve the problems of disconnection and rising tension, the project aims to create an ambiguous space that will house the three sides through intersecting, cropping, alternating solids and voids, and blending object into landscape.

HOLLYWOOD COURTHOUSE WINTER 2013- 5TH YEAR DESIGN STUDIO INTERIM EXHIBITION- WINTER 2013
*
LOCATION: Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA (6106 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028) PROJECT SIZE (GSF): 62,894 sqft PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Courthouse, Retail, Public Parking BUILDING USE/TYPE: Government
As the place where the citizen interacts with his democratic system of justice, the courthouse is loaded with historic and cultural significance: It is a symbol of justice and state power. Located in Hollywood, this project was designed with the assumption of State of California determining that with the overcrowding at the central Stanely Mosk Courthouse in Downtown-Los Angeles, a smaller, standalone courthouse will be located in Hollywood to serve the needs of that community. Since, Hollywood generally lacks any public buildings of civic importance, the new courthouse will be fitted into the commercial fabric of the area while establishing its importance as a civic and institutional landmark. In order for this courthouse to be part of the Sunset Blvd fabric, design took a concept of bringing the public programs towards the street (Sunset Blvd) and pushing the private functions to the back (North), creating contrast in programs and building design.

URBAN RIVER SANTA MONICA FALL 2012- 4TH YEAR DESIGN STUDIO INTERIM EXHIBITION- FALL 2012 AIAPF CITATION AWARD
* *
LOCATION: Santa Monica, CA (1615 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401) PROJECT SIZE(GSF): 219,829 sqft PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Water Museum, Desalination Plant, Public Parking BUILDING USE/TYPE: Industrial
75% of California’s available water is imported from North of Sacramento, while about 80% of the demand is in the Southern two-thirds of the State. As one of the solutions for the water crisis, California passed Proposition 50 that funds $50 million for brackish water and ocean water desalination projects. Urban River Santa Monica project (URS) brings in desalination plant with Reverse Osmosis System into an urban and coastal city, Santa Monica, CA and attempts to localize water by utilizing ocean water for both potable and non potable water. The main issue with the desalination plant and its RO system is the enormous amount of energy, which in the case of URS is solved through Archimedes Wave Swing that converts ocean wave energy to electricity. By utilizing renewable energies including; photovoltaic panels, vertical axis, in-house gasification of waste to energy, and wave swing, URS meets Zero Energy. URS is not only the city’s water supply in whole, but also a park, an entertainment, and learning facility where families can spend their time. By taking the challenge of creating an inviting, family-friendly water desalination plant into an urban setting, URS standardizes the future perspective of any type of plant.

*
LOCATION: Mt. Baldy, CA PROJECT SIZE(GSF): 543 sqft PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Living Rm, Kitchen, Bedrm, Bathrm, Storage, Outdoor Deck BUILDING USE/TYPE: Residential (Vacation House for Japanese Flim Maker)
Located in Mt. Baldy, California, Frame House is a vacation home for a Japanese Film maker. She comes to this house once in a year to enjoy the Mountain. The design concept of this house is to frame the landscape that surrounds the building. Four volumes intersects and create one continuous space, allowing light to penetrate in to all four volumes. Building masses are pushed away from each other to create negative spaces that provide telescoping views. This design has 6 views (or frames) that are organized in a sequence following the circulation. As a result, one can experience 360 view of the mountain and be surrounded by pure nature.

AQUA CENTER FALL 2010- 2ND YEAR DESIGN STUDIO INTERIM EXHIBITION- FALL 2010
*
LOCATION: Dana Point Harbor, CA PROJECT SIZE(GSF): 24,250 sqft PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Swimming Pool (3), Physical Training Rooms, Therapy Room, Community Meeting Rooms, Office, Outdoor Deck BUILDING USE/TYPE: Industrial The Aqua Center design started from the idea of rock and shells. Converting the shapes of organic Dana Point to a building, it naturally creates a landmark of the city. Through an environment that supports both active and leisurely water activities, the Aqua center fosters the concepts of safety, self-reliance and personal responsibility. Swimmers and bathers of all ages will learn the ethics of respect, trust, honesty and sportsmanship. Aqua Center intends to be a hub of social interaction, and a place for the community. The site for the project sits on an island, bordered by the harbor inlet channel on one side, and boat slips on the other. The site is part of a large manmade harbor complex bordered by rock cliffs that includes restaurants, parks, a marine science center and various boating infrastructural buildings.
