Shopping smarts

I

47 YEARS AGO IN WOMAN’S DAY

f my daughters had their way, a trip to the mall would go something like this: I trail behind them at a 10-foot distance, never offer an opinion about their clothing choices, and generally stay silent until it’s time to pay. Alas for them, this never happens—I’m especially opinionated about clothes that are low-cut, too short or covered with sequins. Something else they can depend on: I’ll never pay full price. We go to the mall armed with coupons and a strict agenda— I allot a specific amount of time (say, an hour and a half), pick the stores we’re going to visit based on who’s having a sale, and get in and out quickly. My strategy limits aimless wandering, which leads to aimless purchases (like sparkly $50 T-shirts). This month, as back-to-school shopping kicks into high gear, I’m also going to use the tips in our fall shopping guide (page 131) to find even better deals. We also have some great ideas on how to save all season long from savvy readers like Jennifer Buddin of Charleston, SC, who reminded me it’s time to switch the direction of my ceiling fan to reduce home energy costs. Also, don’t miss our story about Ruth Moore (page 34). The survivor of a sexual assault when she was a 17-year-old Navy recruit, Ruth fought for decades to get the benefits that she—and other survivors—deserved. As we were reporting this story, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the n Ruth Moore Act, a step toward ensuring that women vets who have been assaulted face an easier path to Our hero, benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Ruth Moore I hope she’ll inspire you as much as she inspired us.

Dear Stories, thank-yous and terrific tips from readers like you.

Moving and grooving I was really excited when I read the article about the women who started exercise groups in their hometowns [“Buddy System,” June 2013]. I began a walking group in my small town, and while we all want to live a healthy lifestyle, many of us were not feeling very fit due to retirement and life’s stresses. Now we’ve discovered the health and mental benefits of walking regularly, so we keep on going! It’s one of the best things we can do for ourselves.

Reaping the benefits I would like to thank the staff at Woman’s Day for all their help on Project Declutter! Who knew that organizing could be so much fun? I love all the improvements Lorie Marrero made and I’m looking forward to getting lots of projects done in my new studio.

Your kind acts

kindness PROJEC T

When WD asked our readers to share stories of generous deeds, the response was immediate and heartwarming. Here are a few that show how wonderful it feels to both give and receive. My niece recently moved to a big city and encountered homeless folks asking for money to get something to eat. She bought a number of $5 gift cards for a fastfood place and gave those out whenever someone asked for help. It provided them a way to get a meal with dignity and gave her the joy of helping someone in need.

Molly with her birthday donation box .

BEVERLY TOMB, Falls Church, VA

I saw a man struggling to make shoes out of a box and plastic bags. After I gave him a pair of my husband’s shoes, he said, “God bless.” I feel I came away feeling just as blessed. DIANE BONDI-ANTONETTI, Los Banos, CA

My friend Meg has made it her mission to do 34 acts of kindness this year before her 34th birthday! She calls the project “34 to the Front Door.” She’s probably completed many more already, but she doesn’t document everything. For instance: She had a year’s worth of laundry detergent delivered to a family’s home and she arranged for a cruise to be donated to a couple who never went on a honeymoon! She has the biggest heart.

My daughter wanted to have a Snoopy birthday party when she turned 7. Instead of having her friends bring presents, we suggested they bring donations for the local SPCA. We think it’s a great lesson to teach young children about the value of helping those in need, especially animals. LYNN CLARK, Orlando, FL

I belong to a group called Slidell Ladies for Liberty who support local soldiers throughout their deployments, then help them find medical care, jobs and the like when they return. We’ve “adopted” more than 400 soldiers!

Teachable moment How getting rid of my lame excuses was a lesson for everyone. by GLENNON DOYLE MELTON

I

t’s 8:35 a.m. My girls and I are dashing through the front door of the school as I motion frantically to them and whisper (OK, yell), “Hurry up! The bell’s about to…” RIIIIIIIIING!!! The girls freeze and their eyes widen. My shoulders sag. We’re too late. We were late to school a lot last year, and every time we ran breathlessly into the attendance office I heard myself making silly excuses to Beth, the long-suffering secretary. Our alarm didn’t go off! There was so much traffic! It was my husband’s fault! The dog…I don’t know—something about the dog!!

I want ant my kids to learn that it’s OK to make mistakes and to know that mistakes can actually be the good stuff: Our imperfections can be a point of connection with all the other imperfect people out there. Freedom comes when we’re brave enough to say, “Actually, I’m not fine—I’m having a hard time with this.” And it’s comforting when we inevitably hear the response, “Really? Me too!”

Breaking the pattern By the spring, my “tardy-lying” had become a habit, and it raised a red flag for me. Lying—even in the form of “harmless” excuses—means we’re ashamed. Shame is different from guilt. Healthy guilt is fair, helpful and empowering. Guilt says, “Shoot, I’m late again. Oh well, mistakes happen. I’ll get up earlier tomorrow.” Shame is more dangerous. It’s dramatic, accusatory and crippling. Guilt says, “I screwed up.” Shame says, “I’m screwed up.” Nothing ruins the connection between two people faster than shame and lies do. Anyone trying to live a healthy, honest life must avoid shame at any cost. And since I’m trying to live a healthy(ish), honest life, my excuses were keeping me from my goal. So I vowed to make it right.

My ‘tardy-lying’ had become a habit, and it raised a red flag for me. The next time we were late, I went to the attendance office and when Beth asked me to fill out my tardy slip with the reason, I told the truth. Beth looked down at that form, then slowly looked up at me. She smiled a real, warm, big smile and her blue eyes twinkled. She started laughing. Hard. So I did, too. And so did my kids and the other secretary. Then the principal, who’d come out to see what all the laughing was about, started howling.

Left: Glennon with her daughter Amma, 5, at pre-K graduation. Below: The note that cracked everyone up.

We had a delicious, freeing moment together. We’re all imperfect human beings. We make mistakes. Every single one of us. It’s OK to tell the truth about that. It’s OK to forgive ourselves and promise to try again.

Forming lasting bonds When I tell Beth the truth, I’m really saying, “I’m not perfect, but I forgive myself, and I hope you do too.” We no longer just play our secretary/mom roles. We’re friends. She texts me pictures of my kids when they come to the office to request their millionth Band-Aid. She held my hand and talked me through a difficult season in my marriage. I’m so glad she’s one of the first people I get to see every morning. These days she’s actually disappointed when we’re on time. We don’t like to let her down, so we make sure that doesn’t happen too often. ✦ GLENNON DOYLE MELTON is the author of Carry On, Warrior: Thoughts on Life Unarmed, and blogs at Momastery.com

Clever uses for...

Tennis balls No need to toss ’em once they’ve lost their bounce.

1

3

Remove scuff marks

Hammer softly

2

Protectt a p padlock To keep the lock on your shed from rusting, cut a slit in the top of an old tennis ball with an X-Acto knife (the slit should be at least ½" longer than the width of the lock) and slide the lock inside to shield it from the elements.

4

Open tough jars Cut along the white line of a tennis ball until it’s split open, then place one half on top of the jar with the rubber side down. This will provide the friction you need to get a good grip on stuck-shut lids.

FUN FACT Each year, more than 70,000 tennis balls are used during the three-week-long US Open tournament.

Some jobs, like assembling delicate furniture, require a gentler touch. If you don’t have a rubber mallet, use a tennis ball to soften the blow. Simply cut an X into the ball, then push the flat side of the hammer into it.

5

Keep a bike upright Parking a bicycle on grass, pebbles or an uneven sidewalk can be tricky—especially if your kickstand is a little wobbly. For better balance, poke a hole in a tennis ball and slip it onto the bottom of the kickstand.

SHUTTERSTOCK

Erase stubborn black lines on your wood floors by rubbing them with a clean tennis ball. The marks will quickly transfer to the felt on the ball, leaving you with a shiny, streak-free surface.

Put the fun in fundraising Whether you’re boosting the PTA or helping a sick neighbor, use these ideas to get your town excited about your cause. by JAMIE LISANTI Get physical People enjoy doing two good things at once: being active while contributing to a worthy goal. Instead of a traditional run or race, try a dance-a-thon where participants of all ages can cut loose from noon until midnight. All you really need are printed numbers, a large flat space and an aspiring DJ with an iPod.

Be crafty Donors will feel connected to the cause when they use their hands to do more than just reach for their wallets, so don’t merely sell crafts—offer the public the chance to create them. Pros suggest giving lessons for a few dollars per person on how to fold origami

figures. Learn designs and print out instructions at origami-instructions. com, then display the creations in a prominent locale with a donation bin nearby.

Go wild Having a good-natured authority figure do something absurd for donations is a surefire way to grab attention and cash. Update the classic dunking booth by having the school principal fall into green Jell-O instead of water. You can also ask your town councilman to allow kids to shower him with wet confetti, or give him a shaving cream hairdo and take photos. HOW IT STARTED In 2003 the group’s founder, Barbara Blalock, was working for an after-school program and saw how

hard it was to get the educational supplies she needed. “Many teachers nearby were spending $1,000 out of their own pockets,” Blalock says. She began soliciting companies like Intel and Target for material donations, and turned her garage into a shop for educators. Fighting FOR WHAT’S

rıght I joined the Navy to serve my country, only to spend the next two decades in a different kind of battle—one that I hope will make life easier for all the military women who come after me. by RUTH MOORE

I

live in the most peaceful place you can imagine, a farm in Milbridge, ME. But even here I have terrible nightmares and insomnia. I flip through TV channels and play Sudoku while my husband, Butch, and our daughter, Samantha, sleep. When I do sleep, Butch wakes me up in the morning by wiggling my toe—he learned the hard way that if he touches me anywhere else I jump up and start defending myself. I’ve had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for more than 20 years. Butch is my rock—a gentle, easygoing man—and Samantha, 11, is worth life itself. She makes me so proud. Part of why I’m sharing my story is because I want her to be proud of me, too, to know I fought to make this country a place where what happened to me isn’t tolerated. ★★★★★★

DAVID A. LAND; HAIR & MAKEUP BY DENISE GOSTON. TOP RIGHT: JACQUELYN MARTIN/AP PHOTO.

New recruit My father served in the Army, my stepfather was a Marine, and I joined the Navy at 17 in 1986. I envisioned serving my country and becoming a professional woman. I had it all planned—I’d start as an aerographer’s mate (like a Navy weatherperson), then become an officer. I married a fellow sailor right after boot camp and was posted in the Azores, a group of islands about 1,000 miles from Europe in the Atlantic. It was there, outside a club on base, that I was raped by my supervisor, a petty officer. To this day, the smell of his cologne, Drakkar Noir, brings on flashbacks. I get a tinny, acrid taste in my mouth, like the metal of the knife he held on me, and I can’t breathe. I was terrified, but I knew I had to tell someone. Service members are supposed to report sexual

assaults up the chain of command to their superiors, which would have meant my attacker’s friends. I couldn’t do it. The next day, I reported the attack to my squadron chaplain instead. He said that if I wanted to have a career in the Navy, I needed to get over it. Somehow, my attacker caught wind of the conversation, and a few days later he raped me again. “You just couldn’t keep your mouth shut,” he growled. In the weeks that followed, I tried to simply do my job. I said, “Yes, sir” and obeyed orders from my rapist. It was crushing, humiliating. I had no one I could trust—the base was like a small town and communications were monitored, so I couldn’t even call or write home about it. I was scared he’d kill me. Then, about a month later, I was diagnosed with chlamydia. It was just too much. I needed the fear and pain to stop, so I tried to kill myself. When they found me passed out in my barracks, I was shipped back to the States and put in a locked ward at Bethesda Naval Hospital. I told the doctors there that I’d been raped, but they didn’t believe me. They diagnosed me with borderline personality disorder, saying I must have experienced a “break from reality” and imagined the attack. Years later, I learned that this

At the time, I was furious. I insisted again and again, no, I wasn’t crazy—I had never had any kind of psychiatric problems—I’d been raped! But no one listened and I was discharged. ★★★★★★

My war at home I love my country and I wanted to serve it. But I couldn’t, and I couldn’t do much else, either. The night terrors and the migraines were debilitating, and relating to my husband was very difficult. I had panic attacks that came out of nowhere. I could only get low-skilled work, and had a hard time with bosses—especially men. My mind churned over issues most people would think were no big deal, and something would go wrong and I’d lose the job.

If I’d never been raped or if I’d gotten help, would I have had a career? Could I have been spared homelessness and these terrible symptoms? PTSD, left untreated, can alter your brain’s pathways over time, making it harder to treat. I am sure that’s what happened to me. So when I heard that Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree was introducing legislation to make it easier for MST survivors to access benefits, I called to share my story. She asked me to testify before Congress and, although I was terrified I’d be disbelieved yet again, I did it. For Samantha. And because I know that America, the greatest country in the world, can do better. Within days of my testimony, the VA declared that it would ease the burden of proof for MST survivors. Pingree’s bill was renamed the Ruth Moore Act of 2013 and in June the House unanimously passed it. And President Obama appointed a commission to address sexual violence in the armed services [the Pentagon estimates that 26,000 servicepeople were sexually assaulted in 2012]. I don’t always agree with his decisions, but I can’t tell you how empowering it is when the leader of your country says, “This is wrong and we’re going to stop it.” I now have hope. My rapist was right about one thing: I couldn’t keep my mouth shut. And that’s a good thing. ✦

Susan Suriano AGE 51

Class is in session! Three deserving readers wanted more fashionable work looks. WD granted their wishes—and taught them a style trick or two. photographs by

Classroom style On any given Monday, you’ll find Susan in front of her students in a pair of dress pants or, more likely, blue jeans and a simple sweater or shell top. “I feel too old to wear a lot of color,” she admits. “I mostly own black, gray and brown.”

BEFORE

To pull Susan out of her neutral rut, WD style editors paired a blue paisley blouse with rust-colored jeans, which complement the olive undertones in her skin. A pair of faux-suede ankle boots balance the bright pieces above, and a pendant necklace completes the bohemian style. “I love that this outfit is as downto-earth as what I’m used to wearing to school—but a lot more fun,” says Susan.

AFTER

{Susan’s wish}

I’m a free spirit, so I want my style to be easygoing without being too basic.

An elastic waistband keeps this blouse from overwhelming Susan ’s petite frame.

No need to tuck these ankle-length pants into boots.

I want a look that makes me feel confident and gives me an edge.

Cuffed sleeves keep Jeanne ’s style more relaxed.

Jeanne Zeh AGE 47 TEACHES Enrichment WHERE John Philip Sousa Elementary School and Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School, Port Washington, NY

Classroom style “I have two school-age kids, so I always feel like I’m running out the door,” Jeanne says. “I stick to clothes that can be mixed and matched quickly.” But Jeanne told WD that she’s ready to bring her wardrobe back to life—this time with more color and spunk.

Dream look Since Jeanne loves purples, WD style editors built her outfit around this magenta pencil skirt. The black top and matching tights and heels surround the vibrant hue to create figure-enhancing blocks of color. A teal faux-leather jacket and metalstudded accessories are the final touches.

I’m tired of playing it safe. I want to look as fabulous as I feel.

Sonia Hameed AGE 38 TEACHES Seventh-grade English WHERE CIS 339, Bronx, NY

Classroom style “I am known around school as the cardigan queen,” confesses Sonia. “It’s what I build every outfit around.” Sonia defaults to wearing her wardrobe staple over a cotton shirt or blouse with black dress pants and flats.

Dream look Knowing Sonia was reluctant to leave her beloved button-up behind, WD style editors chose one in a fresh floral pattern. They layered it over an emerald green A-line dress and cinched it at the waist with a skinny belt to highlight Sonia’s silhouette. A pair of blue suede pumps with a 2½" heel turned out to be Sonia’s favorite part of the look. “These shoes are awesome! I can’t believe how comfortable they are.”

I didn’t think I could pull off red lipstick, but I love it.

HAIR Paul Labrecque painted a mix of light and medium brown tones onto Susan’s hair to create an ombré effect, which requires less upkeep. Next, he cut off 2 inches in length and added long layers to reduce bulk on the sides. To define Susan’s fine curls, he used a frizzfighting cream, then polished her waves with a curling iron. WD PICK

HAIR Jeanne’s hair lost over 3 inches in length, which instantly made it look healthier, and Labrecque cut choppy layers to create texture and movement. For color, he warmed up Jeanne’s complexion by lightening her base hue and adding red highlights. Then he used a flat iron from midshaft to ends to give her a fun flip style.

MAKEUP To give Susan an even, healthy-looking complexion, Laura Geller used tinted moisturizer, blush (on apple of cheeks), highlighter (just above cheekbones and along browbone) and bronzer (to contour).

DAIRY FULLY ENJOY DELICIOUS NUTRITIOUS

AGAIN!

From ice-cold milk to tangy cheese to creamy yogurt, there are endless ways to enjoy dairy’s deliciousness —and its nutritional benefits. But no one with lactose intolerance likes missing out on the foods they love because of the discomfort that can be caused by lactose. Knowing the level of lactose in common foods—and which work for you—can let you enjoy all of dairy’s deliciousness AND nutrients. Also know that lactose free milk is still REAL DAIRY— that provides calcium, protein and vitamins A, D and B12. As part of a well-balanced diet, calcium and vitamin D, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Protein is an important building block of bones and muscles.

LACTOSE LEVELS AT-A-GLANCE***

People with lactose intolerance can tolerate different lactose levels. Knowing at-a-glance which foods work for you means never going without the dairy you love—or the recommended three daily servings and essential nutrients you need****. 0 GRAMS LACTAID® Milk* (8 fl. oz.) Enjoy a deliciously simple moment–AND dairy’s health benefits–by the glass, with cereal, in a latte, shake and more. 1-2 GRAMS Natural Cheeses (1 oz.) like Cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella & Swiss. American Cheese (1 oz.) 3-5 GRAMS Cottage Cheese (1/2 cup) Spoon its dairy goodness over fresh greens or spread on a whole wheat cracker and sprinkle with fresh herbs. Ice Cream (1/2 cup)

5-13 GRAMS Milk (8 fl. oz.) Yogurt** (6 oz.) Enjoy yogurt in a smoothie, fruit and granola parfaits, or as a recipe substitute for mayonnaise and sour cream.

With so many options, how you enjoy YOUR three daily servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy recommended by the USDA is up to you!

1 Heat oven to 400°F. Lightly oil eight 10-oz ramekins (or a 2-qt baking dish). 2 Place the potatoes in a saucepan. Cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Add 1 tsp salt, reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and set aside. 3 Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 4 to 5 minutes. Spoon off and discard all but 2 Tbsp of the drippings. Add the onion, season with ¾ tsp salt and ½ tsp pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle the flour over the onion mixture and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. 4 Gradually stir in the wine, then the clam juice and cream. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is slightly thickened and coats the back of a spoon, 5 to 6 minutes.

5 Add the potatoes along with the peas and carrots, corn, parsley and thyme and cook until heated through, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and gently fold in the shrimp and fish. Transfer the mixture to the prepared dishes. 6 On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry. Using a 4-in. round cookie cutter, cut out 8 pieces of pastry (or cut one 10 x 14-in. rectangle). Brush the top edge of the ramekins or baking dish with water. Lay the pastry over the seafood mixture and press the pastry against the edge of the dish to seal. 7 Lightly brush the pastry with the egg (if making the rectangle, cut three diagonal slits in the middle of the pastry). Place the dishes on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until the crust is deep golden brown and puffed in the center, 30 to 40 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Healthy You {New research}

Another reason to pop your vitamin D Getting enough of this vitamin—either through food, supplements or sun—may help you prevent fibroids (benign but painful tumors in the muscle layer of the uterus). A recent study found that having a vitamin D level above 20 ng/mL decreased the risk for fibroids by 32%, possibly because the vitamin is known to slow the growth of the type of cells that develop into fibroids. Ask your doctor for a test to find out your levels. Up to 22% of Americans

Researchers found that one glass of beet juice lowered blood pressure in people for up to 24 hours, likely due to a high concentration of nitrates, which help widen blood vessels and improve blood flow. Not a fan of beets? Other nitrate sources include spinach and cabbage.

suffer from a reaction to allergens floating around in the air.

{3 small steps}

FEND OFF FALL ALLERGIES Ragweed, the biggest culprit of autumn allergies, starts pollinating in mid-August and ends with the first hard freeze. To keep symptoms—like a runny nose and congestion—to a minimum, follow these tips:

1

Start meds before you sneeze

RX nasal corticosteroid sprays prevent your body from releasing chemicals that react to ragweed. The medication works better if it’s already in your system once the allergen is airborne.

2

Wash off at night

Take a shower after you’ve been working or exercising outdoors, or in the evening before you go to bed. This will cut down on allergen exposure while you snooze, and you’ll be more likely to wake up sniffle-free.

SOURCE: Martha V. White, MD, allergist, Institute for Asthma & Allergy, Wheaton, MD

3

Avoid certain raw foods

Some ragweed sufferers have what’s known as oral allergy syndrome, and will have a reaction to melons, bananas, cucumbers and zucchini. One sign you might have it? Mouth tingling. Cooking the fruit or vegetable you react to can eliminate symptoms.

So if you take it at midnight and wake up at 6 a.m. to drive, you could still be groggy. FORTIFIED WHOLE-GRAIN CEREAL Iron helps your red blood cells deliver oxygen to your brain. Nearly one bowl (such as bran flakes or Cheerios) gives you at least 45% of your day’s worth for only 100 calories. GREEN TEA Green tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid that’s been shown to help maintain alertness. UNSWEETENED COCOA POWDER The ancient Aztecs used cocoa to fight fatigue, and they may have been on to something: Cocoa is a rich source of flavanols, compounds that naturally increase blood flow to the brain—all for just 12 calories per Tbsp.

LENTILS These little legumes contain the perfect mix of protein, complex carbs and fiber to prevent post-meal blood sugar dips that can cause your energy to crash. SIRLOIN STEAK Like iron, vitamin B12 keeps you energized by keeping your red blood cells healthy—4 oz lean sirloin steak provides 82% of your daily B12. Bonus: You also get 12% of your day’s iron.

Get-energized meal plan BREAKFAST Trail mix and yogurt Toss ¾ cup Cheerios + 1 Tbsp pum pkin seeds + 1 Tbsp slivered almonds + 1 Tbsp dried blueberries. ROMAINE LETTUCE Waterrich foods like romaine (it’s 95% H2O) can help combat the dehydration that often leads to head pain. Other picks include spinach, melons, cucumbers and papayas. GINGER This ancient root may help you find headache relief because it’s a potent anti-inflammatory and also contains a small amount of antihistamine.

HALIBUT Low vitamin D is another possible cause of chronic headaches, according to new research. A 5-oz halibut steak delivers nearly half your entire daily requirement of D along with ample omega-3 fats, which are believed to lessen pain because of their calming effects on your body. EGGS One egg delivers 21% of your day’s worth of riboflavin, an important B vitamin that may reduce the number and length of migraines—and helps keep cells strong by protecting them from free radicall damage. g

Imagine Having Nothing To Hide

To drop pounds faster, eat LOWFAT COTTAGE CHEESE Your body burns more calories when digesting protein than carbs— and with 14 g protein per ½ cup, cottage cheese enables you to get your fix for only 80 calories. BARLEY This power grain could help you eat less. When volunteers ate a bedtime snack of either barley or white bread, the barley eaters had higher levels of satiety hormones and ate 12% less at lunch the next day.

SUNFLOWER SEEDS These seeds are full of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, which help your body burn 23% more calories than saturated fat. They’re also jammed with protein and fiber, so they keep you full for hours. PEARS This fruit’s combo of water and fiber fills you up and satisfies a sweet tooth. Maybe that’s why one study found that eating three pears a day helped participants drop almost 2 pounds in 10 weeks. (Apples do the trick, too.)

The GI doctor says…

Figure out what might be wrong The symptoms of gastrointestinal (GI) problems—bloating, constipation, diarrhea—can point to different conditions. To find relief, ask yourself: DO YOU FEEL BETTER AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM? You might be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a condition marked by pain across the abdomen along with symptoms like diarrhea and/or constipation. Often, you’ll feel better immediately after a bowel movement. DO YOU HAVE A LOT OF DIARRHEA? You may have Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). SIBO is caused by an abnormally high amount of bacteria in the small intestine. DO YOU FEEL WORSE AFTER EATING WHEAT OR DAIRY? You could have an intolerance to gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley) or be unable to digest the lactose in dairy. LAUREN B. hen your stomach hurts, you may want something simple, like white pasta or rice. But to help get your system back on track, you should eat foods that are rich in fiber. Fiber adds bulk (so your bowel movements are easier to pass) and also absorbs water to minimize diarrhea. A recent study found that a high-fiber diet encourages the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut, helping to reduce inflammation and keep things moving. The Institute of Medicine recommends women consume 25 g fiber a day. It’s best to spread out your fiber intake rather than bunch it up in one meal, which could actually worsen symptoms. To distribute it throughout the day, try adding high-fiber fruits like pears or apples to whole-grain cereal, have a salad or lentil soup for lunch, and eat

4 Outsmart monthly fees and costly training

INQUIRE ABOUT A DROP-IN MEMBERSHIP Even if you’re

a dedicated outdoor walker, stormy or steamy weather can make you yearn for a nice dry treadmill. Turns out, you might be able to find one without joining a pricey gym. Many community rec centers and YMCAs allow nonmembers to drop in for about $10 (or less!) a day, which is much better than paying for yearround access you know you likely won’t use when the skies are sunny.

GET A PUNCH PASS Maybe you don’t have much use for the pool or weight room, but your local gym has an amazing weekly spin class you’re dying to take. Instead of dropping cash on a full membership, ask for something called a punch pass. You pay up front for a limited number of classes and receive a card that gets punched only when you show up. It can shake out to as little as $7 to $10 a class when a membership would run you $60 a month.

You’ll flatten your tummy The soluble fiber in whole grains and other foods can help you shed the kind of fat that accumulates around the belly and may contribute to heart disease. One study found that every increase of 10 g in soluble fiber per day decreased belly fat by a rate of almost 4% over five years.

You’ll lower your blood pressure Researchers at Tulane University found that people with high blood pressure were able to bring it down considerably by adding an extra 7 g of fiber or more to their daily diets.

CHRISTOPHER STEVENSON/GETTY

Upping your intake of fiberrich whole grains is a smart move for your ticker: The ongoing Nurses’ Health Study found that women who routinely ate whole grains such as whole-wheat bread and brown rice had a 30% lower risk of heart disease after 10 years than those who opted for refined grains such as white bread. But that’s not the only benefit—there are more reasons to chow down.

That’s the equivalent of about ½ cup whole-wheat spaghetti and ½ cup bran flakes.

You’ll keep off weight Whole grains rank low on the glycemic index, a system that rates the effects of different carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. In contrast, refined grains rise to the top of the index. In one study, researchers followed 548 people for eight weeks after they had lost an average of 24 pounds and found that those who ate more whole grains didn’t gain back any weight. However, those who ate high on the index—white bread and other refined carbohydrates— regained almost 4 pounds. Another study found that people who ate about three servings of whole grains a day had lower body mass indexes than those who ate less.

PREVENT CANCER Research shows that a diet rich in whole grains helped protect women against breast cancer.

NUTR ITION

Fresh food, fast

Health and nutrition expert Joy Bauer, uer, RD, shares her secrets for making healthy eats in no time.

My mornings are chaotic. I have to get three kids out of bed, brew coffee (major priority), pack three lunches…and the list goes on. Here are two tricks I use to ensure that every Bauer has a wholesome meal before stepping out the door: Make eggs in the microwave For a quick protein-packed option, mist a mug with cooking spray, and add one raw egg (stirred) or two raw egg whites. Nuke it for about 45 to 60 seconds, then pop the cooked eggs on a toasted whole-grain English muffin with a tomato slice and a squirt of ketchup. Instant sandwich! Prep at night Before bed, put ½ cup nonfat milk, ½ cup nonfat Greek yogurt, 1 cup mixed berries (fresh or frozen) and ½ banana into a blender. Store it in the refrigerator overnight. When you wake up, toss in 3 to 5 ice cubes and hit blend!

TIMESAVING TOOL An egg slicer helps you shave seconds off food prep (every little bit counts!). You can also use it to cut produce, like strawberries and mushrooms. WIN IT! 20 readers will win a Progressive Egg Slicer (value $9.99). Snap on the tag to enter. For rules, see page 24.

Lunch Sick of the same old PB&J &J sandwich? Make one of these hes: speedy and healthy midday dishes: Turkey and spinach rollup Take a whole-grain low-cal tortilla, tilla, spread on Dijon mustard, then ce add 3 slices turkey breast, a slice da of reduced-fat Swiss cheese and handful of spinach leaves. Roll up and enjoy! Salmon and chickpea salad In a medium bowl, mash 6 oz canned wild salmon (it’s full of heart-boosting omega-3s). Mix in 1 can rinsed and drained chickpeas. Add ½ cup chopped red bell pepper and ½ cup chopped red onion. Toss with 2 Tbsp olive oil and 2 Tbsp red wine vinegar. Serve over lettuce leaves. (The recipe makes enough for 3 servings.)

Amy’s Mexican Casserole Bowl ($4.99 per bowl) This gluten-free dish with a hint of ries and makes calo 380 just spice is a great lunch or dinner.

Dinner If the thought of preparing a meal after a long day seems daunting, use my top rules for whipping up a wholesome meal every night: Memorize three go-to dinners These meals should take less than 20 minutes to prepare and include ingredients you’ll likely have on hand already. Think about your top choices, then write them down along with what ingredients you’ll need (putting it all on paper helps seal it in your memory). My three go-tos: grilled chicken Parmesan, turkey tacos and spinach turkey burgers. Go to womansday.com/joydinners for my simple and fast recipes. Pile the pantry with canned beans Since the beans are already cooked (and packed with protein), all you have to do is rinse and drain before tossing into a salad, or quickly heat and season before eating as a stand-alone dish. “I lost155 pounds!” Learning to love exercise helped Linda Richards, 40, cut her weight nearly in half. BEFORE

318 lb By the time I was 24, I had three kids and my weight had skyrocketed to over 250 pounds. After a battle with thyroid cancer (I was declared disease-free in 2001) and a devastating job loss in 2010, my weight was close to 320.

My husband suggested that we bike more, since jogging was hard on my knees. I was hooked—it ooked oo ke ed e d it it felt like time flew ew e w by when I was pedaling. daling. d aling al g.

START DITCH THE “DIET” My self-esteem was the lowest it had ever been and I was at my highest weight. I decided I could no longer “diet” because that implied I would go back to my old ways. Instead, I needed to change my life. No food was off-limits—I simply tried to make more healthy choices, like eating fewer refined carbs and more vegetables.

Love Your Pet veterina {Ask a veterinarian } My fish has little white spots. Is he sick?

Q A

If the white spots are evenly distributed and he’s swimming up against objects (as if to scratch himself), he probably has a common parasite called Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, also known as “ich” or “ick.” He may have caught it from a new fish, or it was already present but lay dormant until a stressor (such as poor water quality) lowered your fish’s immune system. First, have the water tested at a pet store, then buy treatment drops that you can add to the water (about $8).

LOW-ALLERGEN PETS Dogs and cats—loveable as they are—make many people sneezy and w wheezy. Allergies are often caused by a protein in the pets’ skin, saliva and u urine, and can be aggravated by dust, pollen and mold that sits on pet hair. While no cat or dog is 100% hypoallergenic, some allergists say patients report feeling better with certain breeds. Devon rex Since there are allergens in saliva, the more a cat licks itself, the more allergens get on its coat, and the more you’re exposed to when cuddling with the cat or breathing in hair that she’s shed. The Devon rex has a wavy coat that’s shorter than that of most cats. As a result, these English kitties tend to lick themselves less often. BONUS They love to snuggle and have adorably large ears and eyes. OTHER BREEDS TO CONSIDER

Balinese, Javanese, Siberian, Oriental shorthair

THE DOG TO OWN:

Poodle The hair on a poodle is curled tightly, and there’s no undercoat (a second layer of fur growing beneath the top coat) as there is on a husky or retriever. This means that the pooch hardly sheds. Consider a toy poodle instead of a larger one—he’ll be easier to wash, and a weekly bath helps get rid of allergens. BONUS Poodles are smart, peppy and easy to train. OTHER BREEDS TO CONSIDER

Irish water spaniel, Portuguese water dog, bichon frise, Bedlington terrier, Kerry blue terrier

n 2007, a chestnut-brown pit bull named Sweet Jasmine was carried, skinny and terrified, into a Washington, DC, animal rescue center. The dog, a survivor of football star Michael Vick’s infamous Bad Newz kennel (an illegal dog-fighting operation that tortured and killed dozens of dogs), had been badly abused. As volunteer Catalina Stirling helped assess her for placement in a foster home, she felt Sweet Jasmine’s pain. “It seemed like she wished the ground would swallow her up,” says Catalina, who was so affected by the dog’s plight that she adopted her. When Sweet Jasmine died in 2009, Catalina felt she had to do more for other dogs like her. “It was astounding how many pit bulls came into the shelter from abusive homes,” says fellow volunteer Kate Callahan.

As the two friends talked more, Catalina and Kate gradually formed a plan to help the dogs: They founded Jasmine’s House, a nonprofit rescue organization that aims to save and rehabilitate neglected, abandoned or abused pit bulls. “I love all dogs,” says Kate, “but we decided to focus on pit bulls because they’re the ones most in need.”

Fighting stereotypes Indeed, according to research, pit bulls—a general label that covers a wide range of purebred terriers and mutts that look like the stereotypical fighting dog—made up an estimated 30% of the total U.S. shelter intake in 2010, according to Animal People, an independent news site on animal issues. Many of those rescues were ultimately put down. “There are a

lot of myths about pit bulls, like that they’re inherently aggressive,” Kate explains. More often than not, it’s neglect and lack of socialization that cause them to behave badly. Jasmine’s House officially started in 2010, but, despite its name, is not a physical “house” or shelter facility. Instead, the organization is a network of volunteer foster homes run out of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. Kate now oversees the day-to-day operations along with rescue director Heather Cole, and the two women partner with four local Maryland shelters to identify pit bulls in need and pair them with volunteers. A trainer, also a volunteer, visits each foster home to help work with the rescued dogs until they’re ready to move to a permanent home. To date, around 200 dogs have been adopted.

Cofounders Catalina (left) and Kate (right) cuddle up with rescu e dogs Tyson, Hoss and Minnie (from left) .

But Kate and Catalina also wanted to prevent pit bull abuse, so last year, the pair began to address the dangerous misconceptions about these animals. With the help of Kate’s friend Heidi Moore Trasatti, a Baltimore school psychologist, they developed a program, Project Mickey, that teaches fourth and fifth graders compassion and empathy toward dogs—pit bulls in particular.

Named for one of Jasmine House’s early rescues, Project Mickey takes certified therapy pit bulls into classrooms to show students how sweet-natured they can be. “We’ve seen amazing progress,” Heidi says. Before Project Mickey, about half of the students felt pit bulls were more dangerous than other dogs. Upon meeting the gentle animals, one young boy with

behavior problems told teachers that the pit bulls were misunderstood, “just like me.” Another student, who had always been scared of dogs, was surprised that the pit bulls weren’t being hostile. “Now I know that all dogs aren’t mean,” she told Heidi. Kate and Catalina hope that with time and exposure, the number of people who share their love of pit bulls will continue to grow. By teaching the truth about these dogs, “we’re contributing to a larger solution,” Kate says. And despite the cruelty she has seen, she remains optimistic for change: “When our dogs win hearts in the classroom or find a new family, it reminds me that there are still many, many angels among us.” ✦ To find out more or to donate, visit jasmineshouse.org September 2013 womansday.com

Money SHOPPING GUIDE

Save on clothing

TOP RIGHT: GETTY

Here’s how to update your family’s wardrobe without doing major damage to your budget. By BROOKE SHOWELL SHOW UP EARLY No need to camp out in front, but getting to the store first ups the odds you’ll find your size on sale. Clothing stores (H&M, Victoria’s Secret, Sears and Aéropostale, to name a few) advertise “weekend sales,” but most of the time the event starts on Thursday or Friday. Also, if you’re on a department store’s friends and family sale list (ask the manager to add your name), the retailer may offer you the discount before the sale officially starts, so you buy while you’re in the store.

SCHEDULE SMART Do the bulk of your apparel shopping on tax-free days. A quick online search will clue you in to any upcoming tax-free dates in your area. You could save as much as 9%.

ASK FOR PROMO CODES Even if they’re not advertised, catalogs almost always offer a discount that any customer is entitled to. When you call to order, ask the customer service rep about special promotions, and the company may give you free shipping or a percentage off your purchase.

SET UP A SHOPPING EMAIL Open a new, separate email account for retailer’s newsletters, coupons and sales alerts, then delete the entire account once you’ve got your fall wardrobe set. That way you’ll be in the know for fall but protected from tempting offers for the rest of the year.

EARN MORE POINTS Try the Shopkick app, which earns you points toward gift cards or savings. Simply walk into an affiliated store such as Macy’s, American Eagle or Sports Authority, then check in with the app.

SPLIT UP PURCHASES Stores such as Kohl’s and Famous Footwear offer a coupon on the receipt, or a link to a survey you can fill out for 20% off your next purchase. Buy one item, get the receipt with the coupon code, then go back later or the next day to stock up on the rest with your discount. USE STORE CREDIT CARDS If you have favorite stores, sign up for a branded card, so even buying groceries earns you coupons and discounts. Cardholders are also often entitled to double or triple rewards if they shop in those stores on certain days. Caveat: It’s only worth it if you pay the balance in full each month—the high interest rate and late fees are brutal. SOURCES: Andrea Woroch, consumer savings expert. LOWEST PRICE

HP Pavilion 11 TouchSmart Notebook ✦ $399

Gateway NE56R34u Laptop ✦ $399

Samsung Chromebook (XE303C12-A01US) ✦ $249

This Notebook—the most affordable HP that has both a touchscreen and a keyboard— is powerful for the price, says Dan Ackerman, section editor at CNET.com. It’s super-light (a smidge over 3 pounds) and good for Skyping with friends because of its HP TrueVision HD Webcam.

“This is a sweet deal if you mainly want a system that can handle day-to-day computing tasks,” like web surfing, writing or accounting, says Laarni Ragaza, managing editor for hardware at PCMag.com. It’s less ideal for a teen who wants to use it to play complex video games or edit movies.

The price is so low because this device has little storage and runs Google Chrome OS, not Windows. But if you spend lots of time online and store your documents and photos in “the cloud” (an online storage service like Google Drive), then this model might be all you need, says Ragaza.

Acer Aspire V5 $549

Sony VAIO Fit 14 $799

ASUS VivoBook X202E $499

This thin, streamlined 15" laptop “is just about the least expensive midsize model with Windows 8 and a touch screen out there,” says Ackerman. Plus, it’s available in blue or champagne, giving it a bit more personality than a basic black laptop, and its backlit keyboard glows in dim lighting.

This handsome new line (the Fit 14 comes in steel silver, black or pink) runs the latest Windows 8. “It has a great design, a solid metal body and a higher screen resolution than any other laptop in its price range,” Ackerman says, meaning it’s good for viewing photos or watching movies.

The list price is about $500, but Ackerman points out that if you shop around, you can find this compact 11" laptop with a touch screen for around $400. It has similar features to the HP Pavillion 11 TouchSmart but has more storage and is part aluminum so it looks more expensive.

Clever mall floor plans

Food, food everywhere

Far-off locations

THE FACTS Mall food now tends to be higher-quality and more expensive, and some retailers have added in-store cooking demonstrations. Not only is this a distraction, some research even shows that the better the food, the more you spend when you shop.

THE FACTS Many outlet malls are located at least 30 miles outside metropolitan centers— and there’s a reason for that. The more time and effort you expend getting there, the more determined you’ll be to make the trip worthwhile by buying things. Economists call this phenomenon the “sunk cost fallacy”: You invest enough that you want some kind of return, so you stick it out and end up spending even more— even though it would be sm smarter to cut your losse losses and call it a day.

THE FACTS Large anchor stores in malls are spread apart in the hopes that you’ll cover more ground and visit extra shops along the way—the more you see, the more likely you are to buy. It’s no wonder you’re pooped, crisscrossing from store to store and searching for hard-tofind bathrooms. Plus, the head-thumping soundtrack in some retailers will drive you to hand your kids cash while you wait outside.

THE SOLUTION Fuel up the kids in the car and bring snacks and water bottles in your purse. Aim to park far from the food court and shop after lunch (say, from 1 to 5 P.M.) so y you only have minor hunger pangs as you smell that darn pretzel stand.

THE SOLUTION Plan a sensible, efficient nt route ahead of time me using a map from the mall’s website to avoid popping into Victoria’s oria’s Secret for that $45 45 negligee that you don’t need. Take advantage of fair-weather gardeners Not everyone sticks with the hobby. “You can get the best prices on garden tools and gear at thrift stores, flea markets and yard sales at the end of the season. That’s when many people dump their used equipment,” says Tiffany Aliche of TheBudgetnista.com.

Shake Yourself Skinny! How I Lost 85 LBS*, and it was as easy as shake, shake, shake! “Finally, at age 54, I’m in better shape than I have been in years. A few years ago, if you had told me that I’d look or feel this good, I wouldn’t have believed you. After three pregnancies and then rupturing a disc in my back, my weight climbed steadily uphill. I was up to 214 pounds‌and I’m only 5’3â€?! It got to the point that the only clothes I felt really comfortable in were the hospital scrubs I wear for my job. I was wearing a size 20 jean and size 22/24 top, and I couldn’t face the reality of how large I had become so I stopped weighing myself altogether. I tried counting calories and cutting out my comfort foods, but I hated having to cook separate meals for myself and not being able to enjoy what the rest of my family was having. And due to my injury and severe osteoarthritis, exercise wasn’t an option. Even getting out of bed in the morning was a struggle.

Cind y lost 85 lbs * ! *Avg. weight loss 10 lbs in 3+ months. Compensated for excellent results. Cindy used SENSAÂŽ for 11 months.

My turning point came one day when my granddaughter blurted out, ‘Grandma, you’re fat!’ It nearly brought me to me tears. I wanted to be a role model to my grandchildren instead of a bad example, and I knew I needed to make a change before it was too late. The SENSAŽ Breakthrough One night while browsing online, I came across an advertisement for the SENSAŽ Weight-Loss System. I was intrigued, so I visited their web

7 things college financial aid experts want you to know by TRACY SAELINGER

1

5

AVOID APPLYING TO ONLY ONE SCHOOL

To avoid cosigning your child’s student loan (an option that can saddle parents with debt if the graduate can’t pay), have him or her take out a Perkins government loan or an unsubsidized Stafford loan, which isn’t need-based, says Higgins. Undergrads can borrow a maximum of $27,000 by the end of four years.

“Financial aid officers have a limited budget to attract students,” says Brannon Lloyd, president of The College Money Guys, a Houston-based college financial planning firm. “If you apply early decision or put only one school on your FAFSA [the standard financial aid form], that school will know it doesn’t need to allocate as much of its budget to persuade you to enroll.”

2

FILL OUT THE FAFSA EARLY

Even though most schools have a spring deadline, aim to send in your form during the first two weeks of January. “Schools will already be going through their budgets, and the later you apply for aid, the less they might have to give,” says Tim Higgins, author of Pay for College Without Sacrificing Your Retirement.

4

HOME EQUITY IS UNLIKELY TO COUNT AGAINST YOU

“The FAFSA doesn’t require you to disclose your home’s value,” says Higgins, and fewer than 300 schools will ask you to fill out a College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS), which does. So even if it’s unmortgaged or worth a lot, your house probably won’t limit the amount of aid your child will be eligible for. But if you do need to fill out a CSS, figure out your Expected Family Contribution at finaid.org/calculators to estimate what you’ll be asked to pay.

CONSIDER APPLYING TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS

MASTERFILE

LOOK INTO GOVERNMENT LOANS

Many families who qualify for financial aid don’t look at private schools because of those $40,000-plus annual price tags. But these schools can often offer merit scholarships that make tuition equal to or even less than that of state schools, Lloyd says.

7

6

COLLEGE KIDS CAN WIN MONEY TOO

Scholarships are available after high school graduation. Many academic departments in college award monetary prizes for participation in certain majors or activities, says Ben Kaplan, who went to Harvard for free and now publishes CityofCollegeDreams.org and Scholaroo.com. Students should ask their academic advisor and heads of departments. Also, browse collegescholarships.org.

CLEP TESTS CAN ADD UP TO A FREE YEAR

Most parents know that Advanced Placement (AP) tests can earn college credits, but few are aware of the College Level Exam Program (CLEP), offered by the College Board, says Katherine Cohen, CEO of IvyWise, an educational consulting firm. Like APs, the CLEP exam lets high school grads earn hours of college credit. The 90-minute tests cost $80 each, but with enough credit, new students can achieve sophomore standing at some schools, adding up to a 25% college savings, Kaplan says.

Directions 1 Place the book with the prettiest front cover on a protected surface, front down. Align the ruler with the bottom edge. Holding it firmly in place, use the ruler as a guide as you slice through the back cover with the razor blade, 1" from the bottom; stop 1" from the book’s spine. 2 Align the ruler with the book’s spine. Hold it firmly in place and use it as a guide as you slice through the back cover with the razor, 1" from the spine. Remove the cover cutout and discard. You’ll be left with an L-shaped back cover. 3 Using this L-shape as your guide, cut out about 20 of the book’s pages (as many as your razor can cut through), 1" from the spine and bottom; discard the pages. Continue cutting and removing 20 pages at a time until you reach the front cover. 4 Repeat Steps 1 through 3 with the book with the prettiest back cover, starting with the back down this time. 5 Repeat Steps 1 through 3 with two or three more books, but cut through both front and back covers. 6 Place the book with remaining back cover (from Step 4, above) onto your surface, back cover down. Apply hot glue along its L-shaped front cover. Lightly place one of the books with both covers removed on top, aligning the spines and bottoms of both books, then press down and hold until glue sets. Repeat with the other books that have both covers cut out. Attach the book with the remaining front cover last. 7 Sit the attached group of books on its bottom edge. Drizzle craft glue liberally onto the exposed cut pages, using a brush to coat them. (This will prevent the books from opening.) Wrap rubber bands around the group to hold the books together as they dry. Allow to dry completely (at least overnight). 8 Place vessel inside book cavity.
