Loyol a Academy Second Century Campaig n
FINE ARTS INITIATIVE Fundraising Goal:
$35 Million
What is the Fine Arts Initiative? It is one of six initiatives in The Second Century Campaign — an ambitious fundraising effort that will position Loyola Academy as the nation’s leading Jesuit, college-preparatory faith and education center for the 21st century. The Fine Arts Initiative will generate support for the development of a comprehensive fine and performing arts center with the following features to facilitate our Ramblers’ creative endeavors: • • • • • • • • • •
An 800-seat performing arts center equipped with an orchestra pit, ample fly space for scenery storage, offstage rehearsal and staging areas, set design and construction areas, a costume workshop, a lighting booth, a green room, a makeup room and dressing rooms A black box theater for smaller performances Music, dance and art studios A ceramics studio and a kiln room An architecture design studio Music rehearsal spaces and a music library A musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) lab for electronic audio production A computer-aided design (CAD) lab A photo lab and darkroom Exhibition space
Why has Loyola’s leadership identified an arts center as a strategic priority? Since the first Jesuit school opened nearly five centuries ago, the Jesuits have understood that the arts play an important role in the enrichment of the human spirit and the development of creative thinkers with the potential to transform society in positive ways. A study conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts confirms what the Jesuits have long held to be true: that students who participate in the arts perform better academically and contribute significantly more to their communities. Loyola has launched The Fine Arts Initiative to give Rambler artists and non-artists alike the facilities they need to engage in creative expression and exploration.
BENEFITS OF A NEW FINE ARTS CENTER • • • • • • • •
Will enrich the educational experience of every Rambler by supporting expanded programming in art, design, photography, filmmaking, architecture, dance, music, theatrical performance and production Will support cross-disciplinary programming in areas such as public speaking and the sciences Will provide a place where students and faculty can gather to form a vibrant artistic community, allowing for a stimulating exchange of creative ideas, concepts and techniques Will enable non-artists to develop an appreciation of the fine and performing arts Will give Ramblers of all artistic abilities the skills and insights they need to become team-oriented problem solvers equipped with the insight and imagination needed to put knowledge and information to creative use Will nurture transferable skills such as perseverance, self-discipline, a willingness to look at problems from different perspectives and the confidence to “think outside of the box” Will match the $32 million invested in our athletic facilities over the past decade, giving students engaged in the fine and performing arts the same state-of-the-art facilities enjoyed by Loyola athletes Will enable Loyola to feature programming by local, national and international artists for the benefit of the entire community
